Summary: Reaper 001 and NX Lionheart acted as an escort for the cargo freighter SS Belfast from its departure from Pinastri to its designated warp point. In transit the SS Belfast was hijacked and able to escape the system.
Details: Marines met in headquarters for a pre-mission briefing. Due to the destruction of the SS New Delhi command has dictated that marine fighters and craft provide Estcourt to cargo vessels as they depart Pinastri system. The unidentified assailants seem capable of attacking vessels between when they depart Pinastri orbit and arrive and their warp departure point. Prior attacks also went undetected by Pinastri's sophisticated sensor and defense grids indicating the assailants either have cloaking devices or some other means to counter our sensor systems.
The SS Belfast was carrying particularly high value cargo; Dilithium, Tricobalt explosives and photon torpedoes destined for fleet resupply. In addition to being highly valuable, the cargo was also highly volatile. Were the Belfast to be destroyed, the blast would cause significant damage subspace in the region. The kinetic blast radius could also damage several stations, structures and vessels in orbit. As a result a heavier escort was requested to protect this vital ordinance. Reaper 001 and NX Lionheart rendezvoused with the Belfast in upper atmosphere and got into formation to provide escort to the warp out point. At half impulse this trip was calculated to take only 15 minutes.
5 Minutes into the trip an unknown vessel warped into orbit approximately 200 million kilometers from the Belfast. It was not broadcasting any IFF, not respond to any hails. Reaper 001 was ordered to break formation and intercept. 5 Minutes later Reaper 001 made contact with the unknown vessel. The vessel remained unresponsive to hails and opened fire on Reaper 001. After a brief exchange of fire the vessel turned tail and fled warping out of the system.
Simultaneously comms chatter was detected from the SS Belfast. They were reports of weapons fire aboard, shortly thereafter all communications from the ship ceased. The Belfast suddenly raised its shields and changed course going to emergency impulse speed. The NX Lionheart attempted to re-establish contact with the Belfast but was unable to do so. The Belfast also changed its shield modulation to prevent an attempted retaking via transporters or docking. The Lionheart then reported a hijacking to HQ and established a weapons lock on the Belfast, standing by to disable the craft. In reaction to the weapons lock all of the torpedoes in cargo bay of the Belfast were armed, this meant incoming weapons fire risked setting off the ordinance to catastrophic effects. Due to the escalation Pinastri HQ ordered the Lionheart and Reaper 001 to disengage and allow the Belfast to warp out. Its warp trail and signature were logged for a later intercept and investigation.
The marine patrol returned to HQ and began to discuss what had transpired over the last two weeks. One thing was clear, the group of assailants were crafty and had an insider knowledge of Starfleet technology, tactics and protocol. Speculation was made they may be obtaining insider knowledge. The decision was made by CO FORCECOM to report he possible security breach to intel and security for further investigation. in addition, further measures to protect cargo ships in Pinastri will need to be forthcoming to avoid further incidents.
