Task Force Tarok midterm mission: Revelation at Pirandia

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Thursdays 6pm to 8pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Nora Gerhadsen
Executive Officer: April Coswell

Moderators: Nora Gerhadsen, JayceRebel, April Coswell

Mission Name: Task Force Tarok: Revelation at Pirandia

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Enroute to the Pirandia System

Alert Status: Fleet Yellow Alert

USS Veracruz sent reports of meeting a small Talaxian freighter called the Shiny Happy Journey moments before being attacked by a cloaked Kzem vessel in the Telos Sector. They lost sight of the Talaxian, but the vessel's last reported course took it toward the Pirandia System in the Pirandia Sector. Pirandia III is an inhabited planet. The local species, the Pirandians, are warp capable; they are humanoids with well-developed telepathy and telekinesis. They were previously contacted by USS Shogun, under the command of now-Rear Admiral Kermie Mistwallow on Stardate 140816. If the Kzem are showing an interest in this planet, then there is a possibility that they may be in danger. USS Goddard and USS Veracruz are already enroute to Pirandia; they are carrying a contingent of Marines to investigate any planetside disturbances.

OOC Notes:

- This notecard was done after the fact. Well done, all! We had 29 people participate in total.

- This mission was the Task Force Tarok 'midterm' event. Starfleet personnel were either on board USS Goddard under the command of Rear Admiral Kermie Mistwallow, or aboard USS Veracruz, being commanded by Commodore Aryela, or they were in the Marine contingent, under the command of Major Kyle Asbrink. Most other personnel were locals from the slums of a downtrodden city on Pirandia III. A special thank-you to our Kzem priests, Commander Kristoff Jameson and Te'ellis (xxFadeIntoMistxx Schism)!

Command Log:

Stardate: 200801

Location: Spacedock, Peedy Thor Station, Pinastri System

Alert Status: Fleet-Wide Yellow Alert

The Kzem have apparently used a protomatter-based weapon to cause the Pirandia central star to undergo some sort of abbreviated supernova. The resulting extreme brightening of the star, and expanding shock front of material, has laid complete waste to Pirandia III and to everything else in the system. The Pirandia System itself has been rendered utterly devoid of life. There may be danger to nearby systems as the expanding light and material reaches them -- but no sooner than about two years.

Task Force assets in-system at the time included USS Goddard and USS Veracruz. Veracruz carried a Marine contingent whose purpose was to reconnoiter the planet's surface for Kzem activity. Their reports will be issued elsewhere. Reports from survivors on the surface are somewhat sketchy, as there are only a few alive who witnessed what happened. Apparently, a pair Kzem "Chosen Ones" approached potential converts in the slums of a relatively impoverished area called Frennal City. After speaking with the crowd, a figure called "The Morrigan" appeared and spoke further. It is possible that The Morrigan might be the leader of the Kzem, but at this point that is somewhat unclear.

The crowd became agitated to the point of violent. At an incidence of violence against the Kzem, The Morrigan called to an asset in-system to deploy some sort of device. This device was later determined by USS Goddard and USS Veracruz to be a protomatter-based weapon, carrying in excess of 1000 kilograms of protomatter. The weapon was carried in the magnesite-lined hold of a small Talaxian cargo vessel called the "Shiny Happy Journey," under the command of a certain Captain Rixella, with her First Officer Cordara. Once the Talaxian released the weapon, they continued to fall into the Pirandia central star, apparently voluntarily. The crew of the Shiny Happy Journey broadcast their farewells as the ship plunged into the rapidly-heating stellar atmosphere. It is likely that the ship was destroyed before the weapon activated.

Upon activation, the Kzem weapon induced a supernova-like reaction in the star. The star rapidly increased in brightness, exceeding 10,000 times its normal brightness in mere minutes. The excess heat from this brightening super-heated the atmosphere of Pirandia III, evaporating it promptly from the planet's day side. Pirandia III's day-side oceans were similarly evaporated at about the same time. Fires broke out spontaneously all over the planet's day side, starting at the sub-stellar point. The Pirandian government was slow to realize the danger, but in any event they had no more than ten minutes to effect a planetary evacuation. When Goddard contacted the planetary government, they were met with first disbelief, then hostility. A Pirandian warship engaged the Starfleet vessels, truncating their opportunities to evacuate what people they could. All Starfleet personnel were successfully beamed off of the planet, but only a few Pirandian survivors from Frennal City could be removed. At the time of the supernova event, Frennal City was on the planet's night side.

Destruction in the Pirandia System is complete. Apart from those few Pirandians evacuated by Starfleet, the rest have been lost to the supernova. All Pirandian vessels that remained in-system were destroyed, and none were known to have evacuated. The destruction extends out the gas giants in the outer system, which were completely disrupted by the expanding shock wave. USS Goddard and USS Veracruz were able to leave the system ahead of the shockwave. It is unclear that survival would have been possible if they had stayed.

Outlook

The Kzem have demonstrated protomatter-based weaponry of extreme destructive capability. If they are able to set something like this off in a planetary system, the entire system is at risk, as well as other nearby systems around it. Starfleet's first priority in the Delta Quadrant right now must be find and neutralize this capability. The threat represented by this capability cannot be overstated. There is an open question as to whether the Pirandia device was a complete success: it seems possible that it might have represented a 'fizzle,' without producing as strong a supernova as might have been desired.

It is unclear what the role of this 'Morrigan' character might be. According to the Pirandian survivors, the Kzem priests averred to The Morrigan, and treated her with respect bordering on worship. It is also unclear what might have happened to The Morrigan: Marines did not report engaging her in combat, and the Pirandians report that she disappeared before the Marines moved in. The manner of her exit is puzzling: it is not clear whether she transported out, or was destroyed along with the rest of Frennal City and the surface of Pirandia III.
