Currently aboard the USS Goddard, 2.5 LY from Pinastri.

Alert Status: Red

The Goddard has successfully rescued 23 of the captured miners, plus one guard also requested asylum from her 'employers on Trielous III. we are currently holding station at the edge of the system, as we research how many others might be being held there.

If needed, we are preparing the Goddard to return. The commandant of this asteroid has attacjed seversl freighters to get him miners, and we have a moral obligation to free them to the lives they lead before.

Helm, come about, set course for Trielous III.

SECURITY MISSION REPORT

Name: Ensign Jamie Czavicevic
Rank: Ensign
Position: Security Officer
Stardate: 110406

Mission Summary:
((The mission is a Continuation of Last week starting at 17:14 we beamed into the bridge of USS Goddard))

I was sent by Commander Randt to Question our guest 17:20 hours I arrived in the brig I began to speak to her, her name is Kanzi Dax. I ask her to begin her story and she told me she had been kidnapped at the age of 14 and forced into Sex Slavery. When she was considered to old for this she was forced to be a guard in the mines and beaten if she did not treat the slaves badly. She asked me why she was being held as a prisoner when she was cooperating. I told her to look at this form our point of view she was a guard in an enemy camp. She would need to prove her self trust worthy to be allowed out of the cell. I ask her about the number of slaves in the camp she informed me there was between 170 and 200 slaves mining. I asked about the ore they were mining. She did not know what it was called but did know it was Toxic and that slaves died because of contact with it. she also knew it was some sort of power source. I relayed this information to the bridge and science. as they were working on the ore sample we recovered from the mine.
Commander Randt came down to the brig to ask for my report, I informed him of what I had learned. and he ordered the ship to head back to the mine. Further he and Kanzi spoke he informed her she would be considered a prisoner until she proved she was trust worthy. At which point she informed us that she had the Shield Frequencies for the mining base and their ships. I took them down and relayed them to Ensign Chrystal in Tactical. Shortly after we arrived the ship went to yellow alert and I informed Kanzi of our status she told me that if we let her out of the cell she would give us some tactical information about the cannons on the asteroid. I related this to Commander Randt who gave permission to free her under escort. She gave me information about the number and placement of cannons that allowed Tactical to target and destroy them.

I was taking Kanzi to get some food when she told me she had a headache that I felt we should go to Sick bay to have her checked out. Once there Kanzi got dizzy as well. We had her lay down and Ensign Rhea Czavicevic scanned her and found a toxin in her blood. It was determined that this was caused by the Ore and the rest fo the away team might also have this toxin. I was scanned and determined to have it in my blood as wheel. At one point I got ill and was put on a bio bed and medication administered to re leave the pain and nausea. the ore was transported off the ship and the entire away team and science team was sent to sick bay with headaches and dizziness from the toxin. Piper had a theory that transporters could filter our blood which worked. we were each transported site to site in sickbay which cured us of the poison.

after I was healed I was informed we had found and rescued 150 some slaves who were also treated for the poison. Kanzi had not left my side or tried to escape when I was incapacitated and all of her information was truthful so she was setup with quarters and allowed to move more freely about the ship. We headed home to Tranquility at warp 6.

Conclusion:
Everything Kedra told us was true, we should immediately start looking to assist her and Kanzi to return to their families as well as any one else from the 175 people rescued from the mines.

Log entry:

Mission continued with the Goddard returning toTrelios III to attempt rescuing the remaining slave miners. Science was tasked with determining the make-up of the ores brought back by the away team. Lt LoLeCo LaCourte, Ensign Skotty Brit and myself went to the Science Lab to study the ores.

Individual Reports:

The ore was placed a forcefield while we began our study. Data resulted in the following:

1) The ore, primarily blue in color, was striated with several compounds. It was determined that these compounds consisted of Benamite, Neutronium, and Deuterium, which was determined previously from the probes. There was also traces of Cyanide noted.

2) Benamite has primarily been used in experiments with Quantum Slipstream Drives.

3) Neutronium was used primarily by the Asgard species to strengthen their ships hulls and energy weapons.

4) Traces of Cyanide combined with the above minerals started a reaction that comprimised the forcefield causing various side affects among the crew. The result was that the ores in our possession had to be transported off the ship.

Conclusion:

Trelios III is beginning to be a most valuable find for the Federation. However, further information is needed to determine how to strengthen a forcefeld before furtuer studies can be made on any ores brought back from future missions.

Stardate: 110406
Location: Trelios III Asteroid, 2.5 ly from Pinastri IV

Log entry:

Due to the amount of slaves left on Trelios III that had not been released, we returned to the asteroid.

Once arriving, Commander Garethya Mongrain, Lieutenant LoLeCo LaCourte, and I were ordered to the lab to try and discern what sort of minerals were in the rocks that were being mined on the asteroid. Due to our uncertainty as to its make up, it was placed in a forcefield as a precaution.

The physical properties were easy enough to note. It was a blue. It was metamorphic, with several minerals banded along it.

More difficult was determining what these minerals were We had already recieved from our probe that the asteroid was rich in deuterium, but this specimin contained several other substances. One of the first ones we isolated was Benamite. This is a very rare mineral used for making quantum slip-stream drives. The implications of this were discouraging. At 17:53 Commander Randt came to the lab upon informing him that we had identified the main ore, and we discussed not only would the implications of mining this mean that the slave traders could advance their operation, but that UFS Command might also have an interest in it.

This was not the only mineral however, so we went back to our analyses. We were finally able to find out that another of the minerals was Neutronium. This explains why our sensors experienced difficulty penetrating the biospheres, and how the guards were able to be protected from the away teams phasers. At 18:40 I reported our suspicion that the leaders on the asteroid might be using this mineral to hide in, so finding them would pose difficulty. First Officer Dagger responded if it would be possible to scan for that mineral to find them. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the mines contain it, and that there may be deposits of it in other locations all over the asteroid, we had to inform her that this would not work.

We were able to get a lock on the slaves however, and beam them aboard. All together, counting the 23+1 from our previous visit, we rescued 176 slaves, and 1 guard seeking assylum.

at around 18:53, Lt. Lacourte started to feel ill. It seemed to be similar to the effects that the slaves had from the ores. Since the rock was behind a forcefield, which seemed to be in tact, Cmdr Mongrain asked me to check it. It was holding, but there were strange fluctuations ocurring. Not too long after this, Cmdr Mongrain and I started to feel some of the effects as well. One more substance that appeared to be in the rock was cyanide, which would explain the rocks brilliant color. Unfortunately, we were unable to scan further, as the rocks effects were beginning to interfere with our functioning.

At this point I was starting to get dizzy, but managed to get a call out to medical for assistance. Cmdr Mongrain had fainted by this point. Dr. Hermione Highwater came in, eventually followed by Dr. Rhea Czavicevic. I ran into the wall, and almost into Cmdr Randt on my way into sickbay.

Apparently, Ensign Piper Hagel transported the rock off into space, and worked out that the transporters caused the ore to break apart. So we used the transporter on everyone affected by the rocks toxicity. The levels were taken afterwards, and they were lower, so the treatment appeared to have worked. We set a course back to the SS Tranquility.

Conclusion: It seems that the slaver found the proverbial gold mine. The deuterium not only is fuel for ships, but also can be used in the mining process. They neutronium explains both why our probes were unable to scan inside the biospheres, and the guards devices that protected them from phaser fire. Particulates could be sent to fly around the wearer, making them essentially impervious. What is most unsettling, is the possibility of the slavers either synthesizing the benamite for use in quantum slip stream drives, or their selling of it to other entities. And with the slavers still out there somewhere, they may make a return.

Stardate: 110406
Location: On board the USS Goddard, at Treilous III asteroid belt, 2.5 light years from SS Tranquility Station

Log entry:

There were 249 life signs on the planet, but only 23 miners had been rescued. It seemed obvious that there must be other mining slaves who needed to be liberated. Security debriefed the guard (who had sought asylum with us). They obtained key tactical information including the frequencies of the shields and key data on the deadly surface canon weapons. Then the USS Goddard set course back to Trielous III to rescue the remaining captives. There were unsuccessful communications with the mining colony leadership and an ensuing firefight. Fortunately Goddard was able to disable their weapons without any fatalities on either side. Then the Goddard transported the captives through the shields (because they knew the frequencies). After the rescue was complete, there was subsequent communication with the colony authorities, and that communication was more successful. It will most likely open the door for future relations between the Federation and Treilous III.

The ore mined on Treilous III turned out to be highly toxic, and the crew had a medical emergency from samples brought on board the ship. Operations was able to assist Medical in the resolution of that emergency by using the bio-filters on the transporter system to filter out the toxins from the crew's blood. That after that proved successful, the same procedure was used on the rescued miners.

INDIVIDUAL LOGS:

Ensign Piper Hagel, Operations Officer, SS Tranquility
Position During Mission: Helm and Main Ops

We had been holding at the far edge of the the asteroid system, and the captain ordered us back into it. As acting helm/ops officer, I had to transfer ops station controls to the helm. I set course to the asteroid and engaged it at warp 3.

We got information from the guard about the location of the other miners who were slaved to mine for them. I transferred additional power to tactical to get a good reading, but they couldn't penetrate the surface of the asteroid because of the dess layers of rock.

We had taken rock samples from the asteroid, and those of the ship's crew that came in contact with this rock started showing a toxin in their system. It became imperative to beam the rocks off the ship. At this point, LTjg Tison had left the bridge, and I took over control of the transporters. I locked on to the rock samples and beam them out. After beaming them off the ship, I ran a level 3 diagnostic on the transporter system. Then it occurred to me that I could use the transporter's bio-fitter to filter out the remaining toxin from the crew's bloodstream. I suggested it to the captain and received permission to implement it, working in conjunction with Doctor Highwater. The procedure reduced the toxin in their bloodstream from100% to 30%, which isn't nearly as harmful to the body. After that, the crew felt a lot better. We headed home 2.4 days at warp 6.

LTjg Tess Tison, Chief of Operations, SS Tranquility
Position During Mission: Communications and Transporter Control

We received tactical information from the security guard, including their shield frequencies and frequency rotation schedule, as well as likely locations of the slaves and information on their weapons systems. I worked on using the frequency data to bypass their shields, while Ensign Hagel worked with Science and Tactical to try and locate the miners on our sensors. Their shield frequency rotation schedule was a bit complicated, so it was not easy breaking through it to get a transporter lock on the slave laborers. But in the end we managed to beam all 153 of the remaining captives on board.

Once the slave miners were beamed safely on board, I left the bridge to go to the cargo bay where I oversaw the arrangements for our new guests. I assured that both a makeshift sickbay and makeshift quarters were set up for them. It may not sound like much, but it is complicated work to see to the needs of 153 individuals all at once. In addition to overseeing the efforts of the yeomen and others who took care of our new guests, I also had to be on hand to talk to a few disgruntled guests who demanded to speak to “whoever was in charge.”

Oh, I should mention that I also handled communications when I was on the bridge, but that was a fairly easy job. Mostly I would just open a channel for the Captain to talk to the mining authorities, then reopen again once those authorities got upset and closed the channel. Commander Randt and XO Dagger handled pretty much all of the dialog with Treilous III authorities.

There is one more incident that needs to be reported. Many of the crew suddenly began to experience disturbing symptoms including headaches, nausea, general weakness and dizziness. It turned out that the ore being mined on Treilous III was highly toxic to many of the species on the crew. We had brought samples of the ore board and the toxins got into the ventilation system (or something) and made many of the crew sick. In fact, so many got sick that it was overwhelming medical. Also, many of our guests suffered with the same symptoms from their exposure to the ore in the mines. Ensign Hagel came up with the idea of using the bio-filters on the transporters to filer the toxins out of people's bloodstream. That procedure helped to bring the situation under control, and I would like to commend Ensign Hagel for her quick thinking.

CONCLUSION:

The operation was successful in that we were a able to rescue 153 more slave miners, bringing the total rescued to 176 miners and one guard (who was little more than a slave herself). In addition, we helped lay the groundwork for future relations between the Federation and Trielous III, as well as advising their new leadership (the previous commandant was relieved of duty) in setting up a profitable mining system using paid workers instead of slave labor.

=============================================
Communications Log:

110406.1810 Goddard hailed Treilous III authorities to request the release of all captives held against their will. Response was uncooperative and contained a threat.

110406.1817 Goddard hailed Trielous III and explained their intent to help anyone held against their will. Response was that Treilous III authorities did not recognize the Federation's authority to meddle in their affairs, and Treilous III authorities issued a threat, terminated communications, and fired upon the Goddard.

110406.1824 Trielous III authorities hailed Goddard, upset that their planet based canons had all been destroyed. They threatened to destroy their mining operation and kill all of the captives, rather than let it fall into Federation hands. CMDR Randt reiterated that he only wanted to free those held against their will and did not plan to appropriate the mining operation.

110406.1834 Treilous III hailed Goddard and demanded they cease their efforts to 'rescue' their laborers. CMDR Randt responded that if they release those held against their will, the federation would negotiate to purchase their ore, and possibly assist in developing filters to protect their miners from the toxin in the ore. Communications were unexpectedly terminated by Trielous III officials

110406.1840 Trillous III hailed the Goddard to negotiate terms, but the negotiation broke down when the Goddard asked them to use hired labor instead of slaves.

110406.1853 Trillous III recontacted the Goddard after their slave mining force was rescued and tried to explain why they need slave labor. CMDR Randt threatened to set up a blockade to prevent new slave labor from arriving. Treilous III officials decided to accept the Federation's offer to set up a safe/profitable mining operation using hired workers.

Log entry:
I served this mission as a trainer for the medical intern on the mission as well as a medical officer

Individual Reports:
At the beginning of this mission I began in the holodeck to treat Commander Jadia Trellis. My Treatment form will be included.
When I was finally able to get into sickbay, I found Ens. Rhea ( a medical intern ) treating our guest whom I had treated the previous week, that will also be included in this one since I forgot to add it last week.
I was informed that she was suffering from a headache and was hungery and had nausea. It was then that I learned that the ore and rock that we had been exposed to was toxic. I had wondered why hadn't Keldra shown it, however since there was an unknown substance in the blood we had to believe that that is what it was. Though Keldra was also worked on the shuttles and not in the mines.
We learned that Kanzi our guest had been exposed to the ore without protective equipmen when our team so called captured them. That was when I learned that I and the rest of the away team had been exposed to it as well.
Ensign Rhea then asked if anyone from the away team has experienced headaches. Jamie reinformed me that both her and Siobhan had touched the rocks. Then I recalled that Brent had and has I when I knelt down. I was told that Jamie had indeed been experiencing headaches. I too had also been having headaches but mine had seemed pretty normal. Both Ensign Rhea and I had reached the conclusion that we should exam the entire away team. Jamie suggest that we check her first and then she relieve Ensign Siobhan so we could check her, but I told her that if the ensign was feeling the same effects that we were it would not be long before all of us on the away team would be sick too and because I believed that the commander should be informed.I hoped that I was overreacting, but I didn't believe I was.
I went to the bridge where Ensign Siobhan was, and asked if she had any headaches since the mission. She told me that she had but they were not bad, however she was not prone to them either. Then my fear began to escalate as I had learned that the ore that was toxic had been brought on board. I began to tell Commander Randt that now had another problem besides our persuers. I told him that the ore might be toxic, since all of the members of the away team were having headaches and that Kanzi had as well. I had said that I would like to scan the members of the away team for the toxin but that would mean taking Ensign Crystal. I was then called from Science to report that Ensign Lacourte had been feeling the same effects from the rock as well. I told them to get her to sickbay but would learn later that she had not gone.
But I also got confirmation that the rock is toxic. When the commandant agree to the commanders terms of surrendering the people that they were using as slaves, I learned that we were going to get a whole lot busier. I restated my fear that the ore was toxic, and then the order was given if necessary to beam the ore out of the lab. Then I heard the call that Jamie was not well and the forcefield around the rock was failing. To which the order was given to beam the ore out. I then made the decision to test Ensign Crystal's blood for the toxin right on the bridge. I was able to find out that she had the toxin when I heard the call that th lt. commander in science had collapsed. I rushed down to science where I believed that they all had been infected with the toxin. i sampled some of the lt. commanders blood and found her to be infected with the toxins. I then informed Ensign Rhea as she was aabout to enter the room where the ore had been that she was the only one in the room that was not infected, since I repeated I had been on the away team. I helped pick up the commander and told them that we were going to sickbay. Commander Randt had asked for a report, but i was not sure what i could say other than that he and Rhea were the only ones that were not infected with the toxin. When asked about a treatment I was not sure but we were working on it and Ensign Rhea added in that she was adminstering a drug via hypospray for the pain which I have included in the report. I began then to get a headache of my own. Ensign Rhea told me that i should sit down, but I knew that I was phrone. betazoid and feeling the effects of the crew and but i also did not want it to take me down, but I had Rhea test me anyway.
I suggested placing the ship under medical alert and Rhea told me that I indeed was infected. Since I was not feeling well, from the headache, I asked Rhea to look at the information that Piper had sent down. We found out that Piper and lt. commander Dagger had a theory that we could use the transporters to remove the toxins. When asked if it was possible, I was not sure, but figured that it would not make anything worse. I volunteered myself as the so called guinea pig for the theory. I entered the transporter and then found myself back where I had just been standing. I had Rhea repeat the test where she found that my levels were greatly different, and I had for the first time in that week not felt a headache, I only felt the pain from the rest of the crew. I then said that it will work and we began on the other members of the crew that were infected. Within a few moments all of the crews toxin levels had dropped. Then we performed it for Kanzi, who found the experience to be strange. With the toxin problem passed i began work on the miners whom were brought aboard on the way back to Tranquility.
Conclusion:
In all I think that Ensign Rhea Czavicevic will make a fine medical officer and I will look foreward to working with her in the future. I have included the treatment logs for the week as well as the treatment log for when we reached Tranquility and the lt. commander was still feeling off, so I went through the steps of treating the patient. I have included that as well.
