200418 - Medical Officer's Log - Ensign Rowan Roundel [BEGIN MEDICAL OFFICER'S LOG]
Medical officer's log, stardate 200418.
My shift on the bridge began with the Courageous en route to investigate a distress call from a disabled freighter. As there were no emergent issues with crew health, I was asked by the First Officer to sub on the Science Station. Lieutenant Commander Turok ordered a broad scan for potential anomalies, and a scan for life signs on the freighter as soon as we drop out of warp. The freighter was located off of our port side. I targeted the freighter and scanned for life signs. Ten life signs of unknown species were detected. No other ships were found to be within scanner range. Communication hailed the ship asking what was wrong, and how we could assist. They replied that parts we needed for the repair of their warp core. Lieutenant Commander Turak asked Engineering if we had spare parts that would meet the freighter specifications that we could spare. Engineering responded generously and sent a crate up to the transporter room. While waiting to beam the crate to the freighter, tactical picked up traces of the warp trail that has led us here from Space Station Omega. After beaming the parts to the freighter, Tactical detected a ship approaching our position to aid the distressed freighter. We broke away from the freighter and Lieutenant Commander Turak ordered helm to follow the warp trail.
Upon dropping out of warp, Tactical immediately detected a Romulan Warbird of our port side. It immediately and unceremoniously opened fire, eventually taking our shields down to 48% and our hull integrity down to 97%. Lieutenant Commander Turak ordered me to scan for any weaknesses. Weakness was detected near a manifold in front of their warp nacelles where the two split shells of the hull meet. During scanning, it was determined that there were ten life signs aboard the ship, but they were not Romulan. They were of a species we had not previously encountered. Tactical targeted that area with sustained Phaser and Torpedo fire, eventually succeeding in destroying our attacker. All of this did nothing to ease my mind about how an unknown species in the Delta Quadrant came to be in possession of modern Romulan technology. Following the encounter, the helm was ordered to resume course following the warp trail.
No sooner had we resumed our search than we received a subspace message that the Captain's shuttle was under attack. The message did not include how many attackers, or attacking ship configuration. Upon dropping out of warp at the last known location we encountered only debris. No DNA traces were located on scans, indicating that the Captain and her helmsperson had been taken prior to the shuttle's destruction. I had some of the debris beamed into the cargo bay for further investigation. Tactical scanned and found a warp trail that was still... fresh. Lieutenant Commander Turok ordered a course laid in, and we began pursuit. I was excused from the bridge to begin an examination of the debris...
Four large pieces of debris were waiting for me in the cargo bay. I brought Cadet Lana with me, as she has experience with engineering. I scanned for any signs of DNA and found none at all other than ambient traces which would be the result of perspiration and / or breathing. The pieces were currently in the ships cargo bay are:
- 1. A piece of the port nacelle
- 2. A piece of the aft plating
- 3. A piece of the forward view portal
- 4. A smaller piece of the hatch
