USS T-Durant Mission TDRP1738: “The Silence of the Clams" (190929)

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

The ship is in orbit of Planet Sephori in the Telos Sector. The XO took a group of bridge officers down to the 'Paradise Oasis' to relax and explore. But a member of the crew did not show up at the Oasis bar as arranged, and has yet to be located, despite scans from local tricorders and a sensor sweep from the Durant. The mystery continues.

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Evelyn Rieko looked around at the group. They were waiting for the Durant Science Officer to teleport them to a location where the electromagnetic particles were the most concentrated. Mrs. Stoneberry and Wadi had agreed to join them. She looked at the group, "Everyone ready?" she asked before advising the ship to beam them.

Rachel Stoneberry looks at the senior office and nods then, says "Yes, of course, ready."

Hal Jordan looks around the room again as crew members come and go. "Ready," he says to Evelyn. "Nems, it's good to have you back with us." He pulls out his tricorder in preparation for the transport.

Wadi tried to look as enthusiastic and helpful as possible. "Ready?" He asked. "I suppose so." He didn't like the idea of his molecules being spread around. He said nervously, "How do we know this... this... what did you call it? Election magnitude you mentioned... won't be a problem for your transporters?"

Nems Darkstar looks to Captain Jordan, "Sir, it is great to be back. I was down in sick bay for what felt like weeks. But glad to have returned quickly." Hearing Commander Rieko confirm that we are all ready, "Ready, Sir."

Rieko looks to Wadi, "No Wadi, the ship will teleport us a safe distance from the electromagnetic particle field. They have calculated a safe distance...all will be fine." She smiles at Wadi to calm his fears, not expecting one in return. =^= Durant, Six to beam to the specified location=^=

Stoneberry looks around and prepares herself mentally for the beaming. She wishes Paul was here with her.

Jordan looks at the tricorder as the transport begins. The area with the highest level of electromagnetic readings should be the second location of the three that he had already scanned. Even the little tricorder was able to determine the higher levels - they were much MUCH higher there than in the other two locations. Federation technology was amazing, always improving on what was already an extensive suite of capabilities. He tries not to smile as he hears Wadi developing what sounds like an unhealthy dose of Transporter Anxiety.

Wadi shuffled his feet, ran a finger around his collar. He was wearing a heavy coat, even though the weather was decent, the wind was chilly. He just nodded dully, eyeing Rachel.

Darkstar looks to Wadi, "Wadi, you are safe. No harm will come to you." Scanning the area with his tricorder, thinking to himself how some may be fearful about transporting but all the same, nothing to fear with Starfleet.

Rieko: As she materialized, she looked at the group and then looked at Cadet Williams, the Security Officer who had been sent down to assist. "Cadet Williams, I want you to stay here. The rest of us will venture closer to the electromagnetic field." She used her tricorder and then looked to Mrs. Stoneberry and Wadi. "It seems the two of you have not been forthcoming. You said that there are clouds that interfere with scans sometimes, you have the Red Palm signs up to keep people from going into certain areas. We need to know more. Those Red Palm signs are in the areas with the electromagnetic files as Captain Hal pointed out. So, what is it? What are you hiding...open up to us...share what you know, it's vital to help us find our crewman." She looked to Stoneberry and then to Wadi.

Stoneberry materializes and looks to Wadi, then the group of officers. "Oh, well it seems we are all here,'' she said, smiling brightly to hide her annoyance of a change in plans she and Wadi had arranged. She looks at Evelyn, "You are right, there is more to tell." She looks at Wadi, then goes on. "There are areas here on this planet that can take you to another astral plane...another dimension. It is possible your friend has gone through to what is called Solitude. She glanced at Wadi again, "We were hoping that was not the case, but now we believe that is the only answer.

Jordan materializes at the beamin point and looks around. They are in a small forest clearing. The smell of green growing things, pretty much the same fragrance as on most planets, fills the air. He scans slowly in a circle, picking up the electromagnetic readings right away. They are coming from a rocky butte that has somehow incorporated a stone building into the top part of it. He scans the mountain/structure and discovers a smooth transition from the normal rock formation into the pieces of the manufactured structure. "The readings are coming from inside the butte over there. The stone building on top of it looks like it was inserted into the butte on a molecular level. Now that we are closer, I am also seeing what looks like life form readings, but they are weak and possibly...distant. It's hard to tell until we get closer."

Wadi materialized at the new location. Why they couldn't have walked here, he didn't know. A good hike might help settle everyone's nerves. So a guest went missing. He shrugged. Chances are, if they really checked around, they'd find someone else missing too. "I hope we don't disturb Mr Sprout with a paramour," he replied to Evelyn in what he hoped was a humourous manner, meantime checking himself to make sure he was all here. "Visitors do sometimes... meet each other and wish privacy, you see. And our caves and forest areas are very romantical, indeed." As he said that his eyes went to Rachel for a moment... wishing it was just him and her, walking into one of those secret, special places... "Perhaps your species or culture doesn't have the same passionate desire for conjugal embraces in stunningly beautiful places. Others do."

Darkstar: As he follows the crew and materializes down at the new location, he looks around from one side to the next. Starts to try and scan the area to understand what exactly are the Red Palm signs. They are up for reasons but we do not know what they are for. Needing more knowledge to hopefully guide us on the right path to find our crewman that is lost.

Rieko nods to Rachel, then looks at Wadi. Was he trying to be warmer? Seemed that way, she answered him, "No, Wadi, our ship has scanned and our friend is nowhere on this planet..so he is not with a paramour, he's not here at all. We need to know more about this place you mentioned, Mrs. Stoneberry...Solitude? Is it a dangerous place, what is it? " She points her tricorder in the charged area but can get no father readings on anything beyond that electromagnetic field. She looks to Hal and Nems and says, "Let move closer."

Stoneberry looks at Evelyn and then glances at the group, "Call me Rachel, that's fine. Please understand we care about finding your friend, never doubt it, but of course we also do not want information about these areas on the planet .. about Solitude, getting out.. it could cause an avalanche of visitors trying to get more info and trying to visit it...or it could cause people to be afraid and no one comes to Paradise Oasis." She looks to Wadi, "Tell them more, Wadi. I believe we should share."

Jordan looks at Wadi. "Conjugal embraces in stunning places, or anywhere, are very popular with our species and culture too. The main problem here is that Commander Sprout said that he would be joining us, and we know that he would have notified us of any delay. So we are looking at the possibility that he has been taken somewhere against his will." He thinks about Mrs Stoneberry's description of being taken to another astral plane. "This 'Solitude' sounds like it might be at the far end of a wormhole. Normally we would be going in there with a fully outfitted away team, but maybe time is short in this situation." He sets off in the direction of the highest electromagnetic readings, watching as some small animals cavort around their feet.

Wadi just stood looking at them. Clearly they did not understand. He wasn't about to go where they wanted to go. "It's better that you leave this up to us." They didn't need to know why. He just planted his feet and said, "I'll wait here. If you go in there, and if you don't come back, I'll alert... ah... people... ah... your ship."

Darkstar looks to his right at Commander Rieko, "Yes Sir, the closer the better, to try and get better readings on this area.." Thinking about What Mrs. Stoneberry said about Solitude, could it be a sacred place, or somewhere to swoop people away and not speak of it again? Tries to study Wadi in exactly what he just stated something seems really off right now like we are walking into some type of trap.

Rieko looks at what seems to be an entrance to a cave.... her tricorder readings show this electromagnetic field has a large concentration of particles at this entrance. She looks to Hal, and Nems, "We need more information, but I believe this is where Sprout went in, Hal, you said this could be a wormhole." She runs her fingers through the ends of her hair, thinking, then says, "I want to enter, but we need more information from Wadi and Rachel first." She turns back to Rachel and Wadi, "Is it dangerous in there? Has anyone ever returned from it?"

Stoneberry: Again she wished her beloved Paul was here with her, helping and working together, but Wadi has been a good friend to her and Paul. After Paul's death, Wadi has been her rock, and her best friend, helping her as much as possible. She looks to Evelyn, "Yes, the natives go into Solitude, and come out of it safely, anytime they want to, it is their place to..." She stops suddenly, feeling she has no right to tell even the limited amount she knew about Solitude. She had been permitted to know a little about it, but if it would be shared with Puco, then she feels Wadi, a Sephorian, should do it. She looks to him, "Wadi, I think you should share a bit about Solitude with the officers, especially if they plan to go inside."

Jordan stops at the entrance to the...split that runs through the center of the butte. Two of the small animals stand on their back legs on either side of the entrance, almost like sentinels. More of the animals frolic around outside the entrance, but he can detect none inside, either visually or with the tricorder. He starts to get a very unscientific prickling of the hairs on the back of his neck. Those little hairs, although not regularly active, have never steered him wrong. Something is dangerously amiss here, and Wadi's refusal to enter the area only adds to the feeling of danger. He analyzes the tricorder information and turns to Evelyn and the others. "These two rocks form the boundary of a transition area from Paradise Oasis to what must be 'Solitude.' The life form readings are stronger here, and one appears to be human. It could be Commander Sprout, but I can't tell for sure. If we walk forward any farther, we may not be on this planet any more."

Wadi shuffled his feet. This was Rachael's business! Her guests! Even with warning signs visitors didn't listen! He waited for her to answer Evelyn's questions while contemplating the possibility that, if they couldn't find this Sprout person, this starship would go away unhappy, and perhaps tell others in their Fleet not to come here, and perhaps tell others associated with their Fleet not to come here, and soon very few would come here and he would be out of a job and likely very far away from Mrs Rachel Stoneberry. Then there was the cultural aspect, his own people and their relationship with the sacred, which was not to be discussed with Puco no matter what. He couldn't just tell everything. If he did as the owner of the resort suggested, he would be cast out. And, again, far away from Mrs Rachel Stoneberry. The dismay on his face as he realized these things was quite clear.

Darkstar: As he moves closer to his crew as we stop to see if we can get any readings on our tricorder. The readings that he is getting are very strong and wondering what this place actually is. I believe everyone should go inside this Solitude place as he looks at Wadi, "We may need you, don't want to leave you behind. You could be our guide to figure out what we are looking for.."

Rieko looks at Rachel, and then at Wadi, Wadi does not seem very cooperative, and he seems unwilling to share anything he knows about Solitude. His body language and his expressions seem to say, 'No, I can not, I will not..please go away.' She hopes she is wrong about that. She looks to Wadi, "Wadi, please, we need information.. we must find our friend, If Rachel were trapped in there, wouldn't you do everything you could to get her out? We feel the same way about our friend. Help us...please." She looks to Nems, "Yes, Nems, I agree we all should go inside, and Wadi could guide us if he wants to help. She looks to Hal, "That's good news! life form readings....one human, that must be Sprout!" She starts to feel hopeful, and looking toward the entrance, she shouts, "SPROUT!!! SPROUT!!! Can you hear me? Respond!!"

Stoneberry looks at Evelyn, pleading for help to rescue their friend, but it is Wadi's decision to make. She looks to Wadi...waiting.

Jordan studies the ground beyond the transition area. It looks just like the ground where they are standing, but there is a slight shimmer in the air, rippling like heat waves or flowing water. Rachel had said that "the natives" could come and go from Solitude, but nothing had been said about what might happen to a human who entered the area. Significantly, Wadi was not delivering the clarification that Rachel had asked for. But earlier conversations had mentioned that guests went missing from time to time, and there was no indication that the condition was permanent, so it looks like they will simply have to take a chance and go through. He hears Evelyn ask Wadi for more information, which means another delay. He picks up a fist sized rock from the ground and lobs it in front of him. It causes more ripples in the air as it passes, and then it fades slowly away into nothingness. "Yes indeed, that does look like a sort of wormhole, doesn't it?"
