About the 88th Marine Detachment:
The Eighty Eight is a reconnaissance detachment recently activated aboard the USS Atlas. To Compliment the ships science and survey mission the detachment is made up of a mix of aerospace and infantry elements focused on field reconnaissance and scouting. Past standard rifleman and pilot training marines from this detachment receive extensive training in the fields of mapping, land, air and space navigation, survival & evasion, sabotage and marksmanship. When not on assignment the detachment is constantly honing their skills, by either studying or training. The marines are well versed in a wide variety of literature related to conventional and unconventional warfare. When the need arises the detachment can move across the field like a ghost leaving no trace of their presence behind
In times of conflict the 88th can serve as a small but lethal strike force taking down strategic points or eliminating high value targets. Due to the small size of the detachment they are ill equipped to handle a prolonged engagements in conventional warfare. However, they can act as a forward scout to soften targets or spread chaos amongst the ranks in advance of a larger contingent. Due to their extensive training the 88th excels operating in hostile territory causing massive damage with a minimum footprint.
When not training or actively assigned, marines aboard the USS Atlas can be expected to assist other departments with support roles that compliment their skillsets. These skills can include: damage control, first aid and triage, tactical advice, cooking, cleaning and repelling boarding parties. This assistance is rendered at the permission and authority of the respective department chief or the ships CO and XO.
Detachment Size: 25-35 marines
4 fire teams each made up of reconnaissance infantry marines
1 aerospace squadron consisting of 4 stealth reconnaissance craft
5-10 support staff including corpsman, flight mechanics, combat engineers, and a quartermaster

Complied below are several event and incident reports from the last few months:
230626: The Radiation encountered by the away team on HID-3544C cause serious damage to several marine and standard issue hand phaser and phaser rifles. When operating in a high temperature area that is also irradiated the weapon quickly overheats under sustained fire. I sustained minor burns through my EVA suit while operating a rifle. All effected small arms have been pulled from circulation until repairs can be done.
230710: The coffee brought aboard by the marines has turned out to be very popular. The supply is being used up faster than expected. I am considering working requesting space in the hydroponics bay to have several varieties grown on the ship to help subsidize stocks in between resupplies.
230724: Formal requisition for detachment equipment was filed at HQ. Fulfillment of supplies and personnel is expected during next major resupply. In addition to the standard package, several recently developed stealth compounds were requested for field testing against the Atlas's advanced sensor systems. Until resupply the current head count of marines on board is 7 Including myself.
230807: The above effected small arms were scrubbed and fully disassembled. The heat sink on one M155-A2 Phaser rifle was irreparably damaged from normal sustained fire operations. The part was replaced. The radiation also rendered the power cell in a Type 2 hand phaser incapable of holding a proper charge. The Cell was safely disposed of then a replacement fitted. Finally, the extreme conditions also compromised the Thermocoat on the housing of every device brought down. The housings were removed, bead blasted and a new Thermocoat applied. All Small arms were test fired to confirm operation then put back into circulation. A report was filed with the fleets department of small arms design on the damage and recommendations on improvements for future model releases. It may also be prudent to have the Atlas own science team look into field modifications with some supervision. Suggestion filed to ships Security chief for consideration
230814:PFC Bryers received a verbal reprimand for losing their weapon. Their standard issue utility knife was located sticking out of a coffee bag in the mess hall. Civilian Te'ellis assisted with providing the private a valuable learning opportunity.
230821: Marines have set up a field post at the site of some Rajan Ruins while other crew and personnel examine the ruins. The high humidity, heat and dense jungle terrain provide adverse conditions beneficial for training. Marines will make use of this by rotating shifts between guard duty, off time and jungle training. Drills will focus on land navigation, tracking and survival. Live fire exercises have not been authorized at this time.

Col. Kyle Asbrink

Incident Report 230904 08:00
Pfc Bryers, Pfc. Mok'esh and Sgt. Nirvash have been put on medical leave and put into quarantine after experiencing flu like symptoms after returning from their jungle exercise. They will be returned to duty pending medical clearance. This put nearly half of the marines assigned to the ship out of commission. Were a combative situation to arise this would put the marines at a debilitating numerical disadvantage. Escalated requests have once again been sent to the Atlas' CO and HQ to arrange a resupply. The 88th needs to be staffed and equipped to functional capacity ASAP.
Field Report 230911: Pfc Bryers, Pfc. Mok'esh and Sgt. Nirvash were returned to active duty however they are to remain shipside to extended monitoring. The remainder of the marines worked closely with intelligence officers to infiltrate the docks of Cassandra City and scout the port the Rajan wayshrine was supposed to arrive at. A second team of officers from the Atlas were then able to tag and track the wayshrine as it was transported through the city. The high gravity environment started to show the limits of the marines conditioning. Further high gravity training is to be added to the detachments rotation.
Field Report 230918: Thanks to a collaborative effort from all departments the Atlas's crew were able to recover the Wayshrine. Lt Paulse any myself were able to covertly and safely incapacitate two performers allowing the remainder of the crew to establish their cover and acquire the Wayshrine.
