=Denkiri is researching Star Trek canon, Icelandic & Scandinavian archaeology & anthropology, the linguistics of Old Norse & associated languages, and SS Astraios RP logs as a creative interdisciplinary & collaborative project established as an enjoyable OOC activity for our crew. We will occasionally be posting our 'findings' on the forum or perhaps develop an history class or two for UFS Academy.=

RE: ARCHEOLOGICAL PROJECT

I am writing to inform you that I have discovered a potential piece of ancient history on my land in Takaar Valley. First let me assure you, as soon as the site was discovered I made sure that it was secure and remained untouched. Sensors show the remains of some sort of building or complex beneath the surface, covered over for centuries. The weather in the area and the earth over the structures have assisted in preserving them.

From our scans it appears that these ruins may have been placed there by the ancient Astraionions eons ago.

I have many experts eager to examine the relics and catalogue them, and develop further knowledge of the origins of the people of Astra. Scientists, engineers, doctors, botanists and more, are willing to join together as a team and work painstakingly to preserve the ruins while investigating their creation by those who build them so long ago.

Before I could ever proceed with a project like this, I need the permission of the Astraios Civilian Authority. We will respect these remains and nothing will be removed from the site without clear direction from you. You will have access to all our reports and logs, the archeological catalogue, and may attend any meetings you wish. And if members of the Authority would like to tour the site we would be happy to show you what we have found and explain what we have learned.

Together we can develop a clearer picture of the distant past while working collaboratively on an extremely interesting mission to discover more about Astraios and her ancient people.

I look forward to hearing your reply. Thank you for your consideration.

In service,
VAdm P. Toocool
Astraios Colony

REPORT: This day was spend replicating and placing a meeting and presentation space some distance from the ancient building site. A temporary office has been set up. We will need to devise a space for examination, dating and storing artifacts, I very much wish it fit the environment and not be a white and steel square building. I've asked our architects to devise a building for the archeological and science teams... something resembling a Viking long house.

The next plans are to set up a camp near the dig site. The team members can, of course, transport to Astraios Colony or SS Astraios in order to eat or sleep, but, in my conversations so far, it seems that most - rather like me - would like to experience a different sort of lifestyle for awhile. Thus we are at work replicating tents and other camping supplies. (This rather reminds me of Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterpise, and his senior officers, who used to go camping and rock-climbing on Earth when on leave.) I like the idea of a camp. There will be such comradery as we eat and sit around a campfire. (We do have portable energy supplies and replicators if needed.) I am not sure what wild animals dwell on the plains. We will have a security perimeter in any case.

I plan to have the camp ready for the AARP team within the next two or three days - weather permitting. Or, as they say here, "as Astra allows."

REPORT: Astraios, in her wisdom, decided to send a monsoon. So the construction and development of the camp and the archeological site is delayed. However, I have continued my work on organization of the project, and talking to various experts about how best to handle this. It's very important that proper procedures be followed and that we treat the remnants of this ancient culture with the utmost respect.

During this weather-related delay, I continue to work on the linguistics end of things. It's fascinating, and frustrating, as there is so little to go by. I can only hope that this dig will bring more clues to light.

REPORT: In the very early morning, with no one around, and the plains stretching as far as the eye can see... one can almost imagine oneself being back thousands of years ago. What was life like then, I wonder? We know so little about this ancient people. Their beliefs, their lifestyle. I think we can say, though, that they were seafaring folk. With the fjords right beside us... the sea a short walk away... those tall mountains and the channels between... they must have travelled, and fished, as much as they hunted the land.

This sounds like a fascinating project! Please let me know what resources and help you need from UFS Science. I might even have to make a trip to the Gamma Quadrant to check it out :D

REPORT: I am very pleased to announce an addition to our research team. Science Officer LTjg Sylvia Caproni is a specialist in nautical archeology and will be researching the shipbuilding and seafaring practices of the ancient Astraionians. Did they navigate by the stars or by some other means?

I also had very nice message from Drew (Capt Drewski Northman), besides being acting captain for the Maxwell, he is Branch Commander for Science. He offered the assistance of Starfleet Science whenever needed.

In my meetings with the Civilian Authority, they have been rather adamant that the archeological team be kept small and that our imprint in the area of the dig be as minimal as possible. They have agreed that we may dig (thankfully), but prefer a traditional approach, so, less technology and more hands-on. In a way, I think the team here would prefer that. We'd rather see the artifacts in the ground where they have laid for centuries. Kneeling in the earth, we will use our brushes and other tools to uncover them, and extract them with proper scientific methods.

Artifacts may not leave the area. Thus we have set up a temporary science facility for careful examination and cataloguing of items discovered in the dig. Also deployed is a similar building for the medical team to work, as well as an information centre where visitors can learn more about the dig and what we have discovered so far.
