It has been a busy week. The ship now has a lovely patch, designed by the new Deputy Director of Heraldy, LTCommander Erikalancetti. I was able to send the final details for the dedication plaque to the designer. I brainstormed some ideas for projects - doing them all would keep me busy for years.

I am particularly interested in researching the morphology, syntax and phonetics of the ancient language of Astraios Prime and examining some of the archeological research that is being carried out. There is a huge xenolinguistics lab here, I have been itching to spend some time there.

Today I also took the step of contacting the civilian government and requesting that I be allowed to rent some land for personal use. Their response seemed favourable. I don't need much but, after all these years of travelling the stars, I think it would be a delight to be able to sit down to dinner in a house that is built to my design. Eat vegetables I grew myself. And then go outside on my own patio and look up to the stars.

Tomorrow I have two meetings over subspace communications, once they are over I plan to make a good meal and relax. There is much to be done, many tasks to complete, and many people with whom I need to speak. All in good time.

Another Sunday - if we are following the Earth calendar. Astraios, of course, has its own way of measuring time. It seems strange to follow Terran times when Astraios has longer days and a longer year, quite naturally because of her rotation around the sun and the speed in which she spins on her axis. But I understand the need for continuity, so in the colony, at least officially, we follow the same calendar and time settings as we would on Federation ship or station.

So Sunday... a day I like to forgo my duties and go into the hills to the north. I understand from friends that there is now a path long the fjords. A difficult one, but it's there. I had the thought I'd take a pack and hike a ways into the hills, far from prying eyes. I need to be alone, and I need to breathe. My personal escorts won't like it but... I've been longing to... cast off the uniform and... be just me, for a few hours. They can always locate me by combadge.

Sometimes you just need to get away from the PADDs and the desks, the buildings and the people. Not that those things are bad. But the open air, the smell of the ocean, the scent of trees and brush and earth... they are such a balm.

There is a Terran saying, something like, 'good things come in time.' And I need to remember it, for, even after all these years, it's hard for me to slow down.

Time flows. Usually forward, each minute measured by the digital clock on my wrist. It's different being at Astraios. There's just as many people and things to do. But somehow... time seems slower. Or is it more precious?

I walk by the ocean and see the fjords stretching into the distance, and wonder how many centuries they have stood there, beaten by wind, rain, ice, snow... yet still stand, beautiful and silent, a graceful accompaniment to the music of the waves.

I find myself challenged here. Challenged to think outside my own box. To hear the voices of others and consider their point of view. To open my mind to their ideas. It's different than being on the bridge of a starship. But there's still a mission, and a trajectory.

To explore strange new worlds means being willing to let go of our own perceptions and prejudices, and allow other ways of thinking flow over us like rain. Nurture ideas and they will take fruit, and feed others.

When I first... escaped the planet on which I grew up... I was stiff and inflexible. What was in the book, was what I did, and what I expected. Boots polished, combadge on straight, compliance with standing orders, obedience to regulations.

Now, I listen to other minds. What they see. What they vision. I engage in their 'strange new worlds', and that journey delights me.

It's happening. And it feels - in the vernacular of Terrans - 'neat'! It all started with a conversation about creativity. How people are creative, what kind of creative things we do... and then we started talking about the things we'd like to do. It was brainstorming so there were silly ideas as well as serious ones.

Then I brought up the subject of the Ancient Astraionians and the work I've been doing on the xenolinguistics database. I mentioned the discovery of what might be a temple or a village on my land in the valley of Takaar. Suddenly, I saw a light of interest in some eyes.

Before I knew it, I had a team of interdisciplinary experts eager to get started on an archeological project that was created out of thin air in a few moments of discussion.

Wow! Neat!
