SS Peedy Thor
Stardate 180218
==============

They're gone. I actually went down to SS Peedy Thor Operations to watch them go. It wasn't easy. While I appreciated the diligence of the OPs crew on the station, hearing the voice of the conn officer on the Durant giving the appropriate responses... made me realize that I won't be on her again for quite some time. I stood by the window - my presence tolerated by those working near me, and saw the mooring clamps let go and the mooring beam take her out. Interesting to see it from this point of view - highly recommended for helm, operations, and command officers, I think. I'll make a note.

After thanking the OPs officers on duty I found my way up to the Student Union Deck, and my new office. I had a couple of boxes to unpack. Just some things I like to have around me. I have a yeoman, she seems quite with it and I am sure will be a great help.

The programs I have been designing in my available time on the Durant are now launched and it's exciting to see the interest in them from Starfleet members. In particular I am thrilled to see my idea of the 'seed ship' program take root. As much as I love command, it's also important that we get these programs off the ground. Which is why I was willing to take a leave of absence from the flagship.

I feel educating our officers and NCOs is an important mission. Just because we're out here in the Delta Quadrant, light years from colleges and universities, doesn't mean we can't do more to educate and train our members. I look forward to this new task, and it's really quite nice to be on the newly built station... because, among other things, its new commanding officer will be, I believe, also someone who was the very first graduate of the Junior Ranks Orientation Program that we created some years ago. Great to see Ravyn progress so far. I look forward to liaising with Brittany, too... she really got the ball rolling on the Academy Degree Program, and continues to be a wonderful advisor in that respect.

I miss the Durant and my crew. But I am also sure this work is important and is deserving of my time. I have faith that Jim Hode and Cheryl Skinstad will keep her safe while I'm busy here at home.

I'll have to decide if I want to continue to have quarters on the station, or whether I might move down to one of the new condos on the surface. It would be nice to see nature outside my window... and be a little further away from the call of duty. Perhaps take some time to visit Astraios from time to time as well. It's been too long since I stayed a night or two at my cottage by the sea. But for now, it is time for sleep. I have a workout scheduled in the gym at 0430 and a meeting with my yeoman at 0600. I hope my staff are early risers. I'm told we will 'get the worm' - whatever that means. You have to wonder about humans sometimes...

Toocool out.

I am... I can hardly put it into words. Stunned. Dismayed. I cannot believe that... it's all mixed up with my own... aversion to... violation of my person. Even in the name of medical care. But this. This is... appalling. In so many ways that my head is spinning.

On stardate 180224 a shuttle arrived from Ocampa. They had been through an ion storm and suffered some damage. They had a Trill aboard with a critical injury. An ambassador, who was transported directly to sick bay. It was determined that the ambassador was... not going to survive. As she was a joined Trill, medical began to search the database for a suitable host. To this point, I am clear.

Doctor Carmona then called Commodore Stormchyld to sickbay to inform him of the situation. That much I know.

At this time I myself was in the simulator, but the station was having some issues - I supposed, because of the ion storm - and the simulator shut down in the middle of my class. I dismissed the cadets and went down to station OPs to see if I could have a friendly chat and find out when things would be back to normal.

It wasn't bedlam but you could tell something wasn't right. Ravyn was not there. Brittany had the conn. I had security coming at me welcoming me to the station and asking if I wanted a tour. They obviously wanted me out of OPs. I did not want to undermine Brittany but I held my ground until she was able to speak to me. In spite of her usual polite and energetic response to my query I sensed more was going on than she would admit.

It transpired that Ravyn was in sickbay, apparently unwell? Security was locked out of medical. I was asked if I could use my command codes to allow them access.

I was escorted to medical by security and used my command codes to enter sickbay. There I found Ravyn practically collapsed but clearly distraught, medical staff in a state. Security followed me in and Ravyn ordered them to take the medical staff to the brig.

The CMO then advised us that she had removed Ravyn from command as per regulations due to psychological complications resulting from his joining with a Trill symbiont.

Entirely against his will.

I repeat: entirely against his will.

At this time medical staff have been confined to quarters pending questioning. Dr Carmona is in the brig. As Comm Ravyn Stormchyld is in no shape for command at present, and LTcmdr Rich Lombardia is still under treatment for a severe injury, LTcmdr Brittany Buttons is Acting CO.

The remaining two Trills who came with Ambassador Vene Raax on Shuttle Baox (Berve Borril & Juhje Duged) are in guest quarters.

At this point I believe I am the highest ranking officer on the station. That means it might fall to me to organize a trial. I shall have to check regulations.

But it brings up so many ethical questions....

So much has been happening since I arrived back at Peedy Thor I have not had a great deal of off duty time where I felt I could focus on my own life to some extent. Today I was able to leave duty behind for a few precious hours, and move from my temporary quarters on SS Peedy Thor, to my newly rented condo on the planet's surface.

My belongings were transported there, but before I went to unpack I had to go to the kennel and pick up Sam. He was delighted to see me, as always. I don't know if he actually has understood me when I have talked to him about us having a home of our own now, but he pricked up his ears with interest when we arrived at the condo building, and had a good sniff around the apartment when we arrived. He wagged his tail when I put down a dish of water and a dish of food in the eating area.

I spent some time unpacking a few things, and then took Sam for a walk in the grounds. He was so happy, bounding around with cheerful little barks. We had strolled down here before, but somehow he seemed to know this was more permanent.

After a good lope around, we sat by the water, just thinking and looking, letting the problems of duty, ship and station slide away. He's such a good companion, and I'm very glad to be moving on with this next part of my life with him at my side.

I feel so out of my depth it is not at all amusing. The issue around the.. transfer of a living Trill symbiont to a unwilling half-trill host has created a controversy that has not died away. So far distant from other bases, we are left to conduct a trial ourselves. Ravyn is also a flag officer but since he is the 'injured party' he cannot participate other than a witness. Which means it falls to me to take the role of judge. In every available hour I have been examining Starfleet regulations and previous JAG decisions. I can't find any precedent for this. A prosecutor and defender have been assigned. I must remain neutral and weigh my final decision based on the weight of evidence. But that will be difficult with emotions running so high. Each side has a valid point.

Can the unjoined understand the joined? I recall an incident in Beverly Crusher's logs, about her relationship with a joined humanoid who took three different forms during the romance. In the end, she couldn't deal with all the changes, even though the spirit of the person she loved was just encased inside a different host. I have my own unique perspective on this. In many ways, this trial and the issues it raises, goes to the very heart of what it means to be Starfleet. From a distance, I'd be fascinated. As a participant, I have to listen to my friends fighting and decide who shall be victorious. And so, no matter who wins the case... there will be no victory for me.

Back to my studies....

Po enters her condo with a sigh, Sam already racing towards her with a joyful bark. She bends down to say hello, then quickly removes her uniform jacket, ensuring her pips and combadge are properly aligned. She moves into the bedroom, the little pup on her heels. She hangs up the jacket and then sits on the bed to pull off her boots. She eyes them for a moment, wondering if they should be polished before she next wears them. She puts them to one side. Sam jumps up onto the bed, whining a little, but laying down, head on paws, watching her.

She peels off the rest of her clothes and disappears into the washroom. The sound of the solar shower is soon heard. In a few minutes she comes back out, hairbrush in hand, combing out her long locks, finally free from the tight bun she customarily wears. She puts the brush on the bed, going to the closet again, seeking shorts and a tee. Sam snuffles the brush and then stands up with a little bark. Walk? He seemed to ask.

She sat down, runners in one hand, ruffling his fur with the other. Then she put on her shoes and went to get a drink of water. Then she stepped from the kitchen area and went into the hall. Sam followed, eyes questioning. She opened the door, but he hung back for a moment. Finally she said in a tired voice, "Come."

He leaped forward. They went down the turbo lift and out through the front doors of the building. Sam shot out into the garden, loping, weaving in and out of the garden, going in circles until Po reached the gate and opened it for him. A family was coming up the stairs. "Heel," she ordered, standing back as they went by, a little boy on his father's shoulders, mother and father holding hands. When they had passed, she walked on.

Down to the beach they went, for a long ramble, Sam sniffing and investigating as though he hadn't been here just a few hours ago. Every so often he'd slow down and raise his eyes up to Po with a quizzical look. Then something else would attract his attention, and off he'd run.

Finally she sat down at the side of the channel as she was wont to do, and, happy to sit for a bit, he came and snuggled in her lap. She pulled a PADD from her pocket and began to read.

United Federation Starfleet vs Lieutenant Yaria Cormona
Proceedings Stardate 180317
Time Index 1336:26 through 1506:29

< begin court record >

Kiara Delgotti: ALL RISE

Poison Toocool: "Please be seated.. Fleet Captain Mistwallow, as Chief Security for SS Peedy Thor, would you please inform the court as to the charges."

Kermie Mistwallow: =^= Mistwallow to Paris, bring in the accused =^=

"Thank You Commodore, Fleet Captain Kermie Mistwallow, Chief of Security for SS Peedy Thor and prosecutor for this case, I state for the record that I am neither involved in the incident nor have I been compromised due to being at a Security seminar during the time of said incident.

The charges against Lieutenant Yaria Carmona, Chief Medical Officer, SS Peedy Thor, are:
One Charge of Assault and Battery on a Senior Officer.
One Charge of Kidnapping,
One Charge of Medical Negligence, due to the new host not being included in the Decision,
One Charge of Conduct Unbecoming a Starfleet Medical Officer.

I must also note
Starfleet Regulation 17.43: Starfleet Officers are forbidden from participating in or instigating activities which are considered unethical by the United Federation of Planets. Other Medical Officers are excused from these charges and released from custody due to the following

General Order 34: All Starfleet personnel and/or Federation civilian contractors shall follow a superior’s order to the best of their ability, unless said orders should conflict with the regulation laid out in these orders.

It is this Prosecutors opinion that after interviewing had concluded these personnel where acting in the best interest of their superior officer. However they may still be called as witnesses

Thank you Commodore.”

Toocool: "Thank you, Fleet Captain…. Lieutenant Yaria Carmona, you have heard the charges brought against you. Tell this court, please, how do you plead?"

Lombardia: “I am Lieutenant Commander Rich Lombardia, defense for the accused, Lieutenant Yaria Carmona. We enter a plea of Not Guilty on all charges your honor.”

Toocool: "The charges have been read. Let the record show the accused, Lieutenant Yaria Carmona, has entered a plea of not guilty. This issue will now proceed to trial under my jurisdiction as ranking Flag Officer assigned to SS Peedy Thor…. Fleet Captain Mistwallow, opening statement, please."

Mistwallow: “Thank you Ma'am, The evidence from the prosecution will show that on Stardate 180224, Lieutenant Carmona did knowingly and willingly conduct a procedure that not only is cause for assault on a senior officer, that she intently excluded personnel from entering sickbay, and the procedure she conducted was lacking in permission from the new host. Witnesses will be called up for testimony, as well as a declaration leading up to the event by the Trill Delegation.

The Defence may try to swing this as a right to save a life, however the the prosecution stands on the grounds that one life is not more important than another. The case of the needs of the many or diplomatic relations has no bearing on this case, the charges stand from one officer to another. Thank you Ma'am.”

Toocool: "Lieutenant Commander, do you wish to give an opening statement for the Defence?"

Rich Lombardia: “I do. Thank you your honor.

Lieutenant Yaria Carmona is not only a distinguished medical doctor but a valuable Starfleet Officer. As a Starfleet officer she represents some of the best values of the Federation.

The main purpose of the Federation is to assist its members in protecting the legitimate social, economic, creative, national, cultural and other rights and interests of members of the Federation.

Ambassadors represented the Federation to non-member worlds, and sometimes member worlds had ambassadors to represent their worlds to the Federation itself. Ambassadors are the embodiment of the Federation values. Losing an ambassador is like losing part of the Federation itself.

It is the first duty of a medical doctor to protect and preserve the life of their patients. Certain desperate situations call for desperate measures, quick thinking and quick acting. Lt. Carmona was acting in a desperate situation to save the life of a valued ambassador. You will see she was acting for the best interests of her patient and the Federation as a whole.

I will conclude with this except from the Hippocratic oath.
‘I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon's knife or the chemist's drug.’

Thank you.”

Toocool: "Thank you. Opening statements have concluded. We will now proceed without recess to hear the Prosecution's case. Fleet Captain Mistwallow, call your first witness."

Kermie Mistwallow: “Thank you Ma'am, Firstly i would like to enter a deposition from the Trill Delegation, marked exhibit A, this gives a lead up to the event.”

Toocool: "Bailiff, please pass the exhibit to myself and the defence."

Kermie Mistwallow reads: 'We give this testimony this day 180315 in response to questions that have been asked regarding the injuries sustained by Ambassador Vene Raax. Our shuttle was returning from a conference on Ocampa, on course for Talax, when an ion storm crossed our path. We changed our trajectory to avoid the storm, still it caused some issues with our shields and navigation. The Ambassador was at the tactical console when an electromagnetic pulse shorted out the panel. It exploded. The resulting shrapnel pierced her upper body. We did our best to help her but it was clear we needed medical assistance, as soon as we were free of the storm's effects we made course for Pinastri. By the time we arrived we were afraid that neither the Ambassador or her symbiont Raax would survive. This would be a great tragedy for our people.

Signed
Juhje Duged of Trill'

End of Deposition."

Toocool: "Any objection to this deposition being entered into evidence?"

Lombardia: None here, your honor

Toocool, "Exhibit A is accepted. Let the record show the court agrees this deposition be read into the record… Please continue."

Mistwallow: "I would now like to call my first witness, Lieutenant Commander Brittany Buttons, Operations Officer SS Peedy Thor, and Acting CO during the time of the incident."

Toocool: "Please bring the witness forth, and swear her in."

Major Delgotti: “Yes Your honor…. ...Please come forward and raise your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in accordance with Starfleet Regulations and the understanding that failure to do so would instil perjury.

Brittany Buttons: I do

Major Delgotti: “Thank you have a seat. Your Honor the witness has been sworn in.”

Mistwallow: "Could you please state your name, rank and serial number for the record"

Buttons: "Lieutenant Commander Brittany Buttons SSC#1886."

Mistwallow: “Thank you Commander, do you understand why you have been called here today?”

Buttons: “I believe to give my account of events that transpired on the Commodore's Happy Joining day.”

< twitters heard >

Toocool: "Quiet!" < sound of the gavel is heard >

Mistwallow: We shall be going over your already provided statement today which is marked as Exhibit B. We have already heard from the trill delegation on the situation leading up to the event. In your own words can you describe the events after this leading up to the Procedure in Sickbay… to clarify, the trill delegation told us the events up to them coming aboard the station.

Buttons: “right.. we beamed the injured Trill to the medical bay from their emergency docking. The Commodore left me in charge on the bridge and went to personally see to the condition of the injured Trill delegate.”

Mistwallow: “What was the state of the Commodore upon leaving station operations?”

Buttons: “The state? ... I suppose.. he was himself? stable, focused.. seeing to business with his usual hands on approach.”

Lombardia: “Objection. Goes to state of mind - How could the lieutenant commander possibly know the state of the commodore's mind? Any answer would be purely speculation.”

Toocool: "Sustained, rephrase the question."

Mistwallow: “In your opinion, was the Commodore acting in a usual manner for his position?”

Buttons: “Yes.. as much as anything has been "usual" on the station since our arrival.”

Lombardia: “Objection. Again her response is merely speculation.”

Mistwallow: “Response leads to difference of personality after the procedure, and is merely an opinion.”

Lombardia: “I move to strike her response from the record.”

Toocool: "Sustained. Fleet Captain, I suggest you move on."

Mistwallow: “During the time of your command, Medical reported a contaminate and went into lockdown, can you tell me what this contaminate was as reported by medical?”

Buttons: "Yes, well.. there was a lock down.. when I questioned Medical I was told there was an airborne contaminant.. I had our Science Officer perform a scan in order to confirm this, but no contaminant was found by that scan."

Mistwallow: “So what you are saying is that there was no contaminate and therefore Medical lied?”

Lombardia: “Objection. Speculation on the disposition of medical in regards to the reported contaminant.”

Toocool: "Sustained. Leading the witness."

Mistwallow: “As having the conn at the time and subsequently Acting Commanding Officer, in your professional opinion do you feel there was a lack of respect for your authority and thus leading to conduct unbecoming an officer with communication form the medical department during the incident?”

Lombardia: “Objection. Leading the witness to his intended conclusion.”

Mistwallow: “This is an opinion of the Commanding Officer at the time, the respect and authority of a senior command is relevant to the situation.”

Toocool: "Sustained. Although the Lieutenant Commander's feelings about what happened are relevant, she cannot speak as to the motives of another officer."

Mistwallow: “Lieutenant Commander Buttons, did you feel that you had command of the Station during the date in question?”

Buttons: "Well I did for the pertinent part, I suppose.. I took the chair in the middle of an emergency and communications between departments can get sporadic during such times..."

Lombardia: “Objection, relevance? We already established Commodore Stormchyld left her in command.”

Toocool: "Overruled. I want to hear this."

Mistwallow: “One Final Question, A Flag Officer was also in attendance and could not gain entry into Sickbay as per the records show. According to Starfleet Regulations when a flag officer is present they can take command of the situation. Now my question is thus and leads to the conduct of people under your own command. In your Professional Opinion as Commanding Officer do you believe in regulation that those under your command followed the rules and regulations set out by the united federation of planets.”

Buttons: “Well.. yes, I believe that we all must trust each other to do what we pledged to do, Sir."

Lombardia: “Objection, leading the witness.”

Mistwallow: “The opinion of the Acting Commanding Officer regarding her crew is relevant to this case, if by the own admission of the Defence is that Commodore Stormchyld placed Lieutenant Commandr Buttons in charge due to his own volition that he believed she could do the job then her Professional Opinion is as relevant as any Commanding Officer.”

Toocool: "Sustained. Please refrain from answering the question you are about to ask the witness. Rephrase."

Mistwallow: “No further question.” *a loud noise is heard

Toocool: "Have a care, Fleet Captain…. Mr Lombardia, cross?"

Lombardia: “Not at this time your honor, but would like to reserve the right to recall this witness at a later time if needed.”

Toocool: "You may step down, Lieutenant Commander Buttons… ...Fleet Captain Mistwallow, you may call your next witness."

Buttons: "thank you Sir.”

Mistwallow: “Prosecution calls Commodore Ravyn Stormchyld.”

Toocool: "Major, please escort the Commodore and swear him in."

Major Delgotto: “Sir lift your right hand. Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth in accordance with Starfleet Regulations and the understanding that failure to do so would instil perjury?”

Stormchyld: “I do.”

Major Delgotti: “Your honor, witness is sworn in.”

Toocool: "Proceed, Fleet Captain."

Mistwallow: “Please state your name, rank and serial number for the record.”

Stormchyld: “Commodore Ravyn Stormchyld SSC#1849”

Mistwallow: Thank you Sir, can you please tell me what happened when after you arrived in medical.”

Stormchyld: “The CMO and I was discussing the issue with the injured Trill. We ran database crossmatches and found two subtable hosts, one already having a symbiont, that honor fell to me. I at first refused the implantation, and the next thing i know i am waking up post surgery.”

Mistwallow: “How much preparation and training have you had to become a host?”

Stormchyld: “Well as I am only half Trill and my mother has not really ever taught me anything about it, I would have to say none, other than the post help the CMO and another Trill doctor has assisted me with.”

Mistwallow: “You stated at first you refused the implantation, at what point did you agree to it?”

Stormchyld: “It took me sometime to come to terms with the situation but I understand this is an honor and I fully accept it now.”

Mistwallow: “That is talking after the operation sir, at what point prior to the procedure did you agree?”

Stormchyld: “Well I didn't before the procedure but as I said I am quite happy with this turn of events.”

Mistwallow: “Let the record show the Commodore did not agree to the procedure.”

Stormchyld: “Now hold on, while I did not that is rather out of context and leading to your own agenda.”

Mistwallow: So you did agree to the procedure prior to being inseminated with a symbiont?”

Stormchyld: “Well there was not an insemination you dirty bastard. An implantation yes, and no I did not agree to it first.”

Toocool: "Watch your language, Commodore, or I will find you in contempt"

Stormchyld: “Aye ma'am I still have outbursts at times.”

Mistwallow: How has the joining impacted your own personality?”

Stormchyld: “It has changed a bit, but I have been noticing that I don't get as angry about certain things that used to get me quickly. So all in all I would say it actually has improved my personality. I certainly have more experience to draw from and that help alot with making some decisions. So yes i would say it has improved drastically.”

Mistwallow: Are there any complications that you are aware of for a half trill joining with a symbiont?

Stormchyld: “Just the fact that my isoboramine levels are a bit low for a Trill but the CMO made up a regiment that seems to be working fine.”

Lombardia: “Objection, the commodore is not a medical doctor. His question was about a half trill joined not about his personal experience.”

Mistwallow: “Who better to ask a question about a species than a member of said species? This was not a medical question but one of knowledge Lieutenant Commander.”

Toocool: "Overruled. I will let the Commodore's reply stand."

Mistwallow: “One final question. If you are content with being joined, why did you agree as a Commanding Officer to commence with this trial?”

Stormchyld: “As Commanding Officer of the station has little to do with when Starfleet orders the investigation and trial. However we have gotten a ruling from the Ethics Committee. Would you like to hear their findings? Considering I just got the report delivered to my padd?”

Mistwallow: “Objection. Witness cannot enter exhibits.”

Toocool: "Sustained"

Mistwallow: “No further questions Commodore Toocool.”

Toocool: "I suggest we call a recess to consider this evidence. Lieutenant Commander Lombardia we will save your cross examination until we meet again… ...This court is in recess until stardate 180324.13. I will remind all present that this case may not be discussed outside of this courtroom as it would be prejudicial to these proceedings. If I find such, I will immediately rule the offenders as in contempt of this court. This is a serious charge which can lead to incarceration and court martial. Dismissed." <sound of the gavel is heard>

Major Delgotti: “ALL RISE.”

She put the PADD down on the grass with a heavy sigh. Sam whimpered and thrust his head under her hand. A brief smile crossed her face. She leaned down and took the little dog into her arms and buried her face in his fur. "Oh Sam," she whispered.

Personal Log, Stardate 180409
Condo, Pinastri Prime
==================

So much has happened since my last log. I think I avoided saying anything about it as so much of it was... confusing, and personal. I'm still sorting it out. But it appears a quieter time is ahead and I plan to spend much of it on the surface walking in the oddly beautiful but alien garden. I now have two pups to walk... Blithe surprised me with a little Beagle. She's very sweet, but very clingy. Sam is a bit jealous and I have to feed them separately or he'll eat hers as well as his own.

The first difficult situation was standing as a judge over a case that had great discomfort for me. On the one hand, my friend and someone I have watched grow from Ensign to Commodore and into command roles... and on the other, a well respected Chief Medical Officer. The trial took some hours over a period of two days, and we were just finishing the defence when everything changed. It's odd, despite the fact the trial was cancelled and the Doctor was set free, I found myself feeling a little disappointed. I did not have a chance to pronounce my judgement. On the other hand, one of my friends would have been hurt no matter which side proved their case. So in the end it was a great relief to have it all taken out of my hands.

But the whole story didn't end there. Ravyn certainly seems happy to have been joined - his attitude now is exactly the opposite of what I encountered when I saw him in sickbay immediately after the joining - and even held a Zhian'tara ceremony. I was honoured to be asked to be a brief host to telephathic memories of previous Raax hosts, but also a little concerned as my... genetic and.. physiological make-up is quite different than most humanoids. But as it was memories alone... I agreed to allow it. I was conscious of the change. The memories transferred to me were of a male Trill, Tabora, who has quite the checkered history. I conversed, I suppose, with Ravyn and the other temporary 'hosts' - Brittany and Kermie, and then returned to myself.

After the ceremony and short reception, they returned to their various duties. I went home to take the dogs for a walk. It was odd, after returning to the condo to make a meal and sit down to read and relax, the dogs were restless. I distracted them with a game or two and after awhile they settled down for the night. It was only later I found out there was some kind of intruder alert in the ground facility!

Now Arwen and Sam are asleep on my bed. I will finish this and sleep as well. There is a new exercise facility on the Peedy Thor, I am anxious to try it in the morning.

Computer, standard alarm, zero four thirty hours. Message to my Yeoman, stand ready for morning briefing, oh six thirty. Dogs to kennel at oh five hundred. Lights out.

Believe it or not, Cheryl is back at Pinastri! I am floored. She left the Durant in the Nekrit Expanse and brought home a rather ancient vessel, the USS Cairo. We haven't had a chance to do more than say a brief hello, but we've managed to carve out an hour between meetings and briefings to have tea. I really want to know what's been happening. The Durant has been out of comms range for quite some time. And of course it will be good to see her. I just... well, I can't help but worry about my ship.

It's been a bit of an odd day. I was scheduled to teach a science simulation but had to change location as there was some issue with bulkheads on Science deck and I was told it was best to keep the cadets away until repairs had been done. I was already running a tiny bit late after a meeting. I had to gather my chicks and take them to the simulator deck. We managed to do an exciting science mission using the bridge there. Once everyone settled in they had a good time and learned something, I suppose, about teamwork. I noticed in the debrief that one of the cadets seemed to be suffering with some kind of a mild cold, so I recommended they head to sickbay immediately after class was dismissed.

I then was able to transfer records and reports to my home system and I am at the condo now. I came here first and changed into my running gear and then I picked up Sam and Arwen from the kennel. They both seemed a bit tired, maybe a lack of fresh air? A good jog on the beach with me seemed to bring their spirits up. After eating their dinner they are sprawled around my chair while I catch up.

I just put the finishing touches on a new class that I was writing, and now I am starting another. The plan is to create a new degree in the field of applied communications as we are not all scientists and engineers and administrators. There is also a need for art, writing, music. Authors of history books, singer of songs, givers of tours.

I was distracted by a message from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. It appears... somehow a saboteur was able to access the Durant and do some damage before making off in the Captain's Yacht. No one seems to know why. More importantly, this has caused a significant delay in the return of the Flagship. I am sure Ravyn already received a copy of a similar report. At least now Peedy Thor station has its own vessel for short term deployments. But the report of what occurred to the Mjolnir on its journey back is gravely concerning. I would feel happier if the Durant was here, protecting the station and the planet from these unknown forces. I am eager to talk with Jim and Cheryl when they return. I have not felt easy inside myself for some time. Not since we discovered the highly encrypted navigational charts aboard the Antares Freighter, The Tory... and perhaps even prior to that. I am happy to be assisting with the Academy at this time, there is so much to be done to get things running the way Ravyn envisions. It will be wonderful in the end but in the meantime we are burning the candle at both ends, as the humans say. But still, I miss my ship.

It's getting late and I should rest. I am going to get my Yeoman to go over logs and mission reports from the Durant missions over the past year and flag anything that fits criteria I will set up for him. I can't get at the heart of my unease but at least I can take some action to gather information that will help me sort out the root of my concern.

I am impatient for the Durant to arrive back from the Alpha Quadrant. They have been delayed far too long. I would like to hear from Jim himself how this saboteur managed to board the ship and steal the Captain's Yacht. And then Cheryl went on leave to Bajor, leaving Hode in charge of the ship. I know I must trust him but... I'd like to see the ship back here. They were supposed to arrive today or tomorrow. But I can't wait for them. I am heading to Astraios for a few days. It's the annual Masked Ball, a formal military dance I instituted eight years ago, and I wish to keep supporting Genny and David in their efforts to stay in contact with the civilian community around the base. This Ball is a great way to maintain diplomatic ties with our friends in the Gamma Q as well. I plan to arrive a day early and spent a night or two in my little cottage by the sea. I don't get there often enough. But it became home to me while I was posted there. I'll have to leave Sam and Arwen here, in the kennels, though. The wolves frequent the seashore on Astraios and I can't watch over them every moment. I'll leave a message for Jim to plan for a meeting upon my return next week.

She stops then, drifting off, unaware of the passage of time, as she visualizes running through the forest that sits near the Astraionian seashore, waves lapping slowly, moon shining on the nearly still waters. She whines.

The grand ball over, she declines anything but a single escort who would follow at a discrete distance and watch over the paths leading to her cottage. The night is stunningly beautiful. She'd rather forgotten how lovely Astraios was in spring. The moon glowed from a sky pale with silver. And the air from the sea and the gardens was so fragrant. Her ball gown swirled around her as she nimbly walked through the landscape, allowing the peace to enter her, allowing the problems and worries to fall away, allowing herself to just be herself. There was a standing order that none were allowed to pass through the hedges surrounding her cottage, nor were sensors permitted to scan this area, her haven. As she approached the entrance, the escort dropped back. She really didn't need one, but they couldn't know. She entered the cottage and stood for a moment. She had planned to change and rest, but the ocean was beckoning outside her window. She moved to the patio door.

The night was calling. The music of the ocean waves, soft and harmonious, lingered. She moved across the patio to the lawn, breathing deep of the fresh salt air. The night was calling. She felt an answer from deep inside.

She had just been awarded a Service Medal. Seven years of service. A commodore. Her third command. Including the Academy, that was more than eleven years she had gifted to Starfleet. Yet, only a drop in the years that stretched before and after. Two loves, both gone. One youngling, did not survive. For all she knew she was the only one left. Amid the grief and sorrow, fast friends and meaningful work. But at times, on ship and station, away from garden and sea, part of her longed for the wild and free life she once enjoyed without thought.

Image

Before is gone, though. She could never go back to a life built on instinct alone. After, after she saw just a fraction of the universe and met sentient beings from many different worlds, and filled her mind and heart with the things they had taught her about duty, honesty, dedication, compassion, and honor... after, after... she had a ready made family. Like any other, disagreements and difficulties came up but through it all they all had one thing in common. A belief in the philosophy that was at the heart of Starfleet. She moved back to the patio, looking back towards the sky and sea, sighing a little, knowing it was time to sleep.

A movement in the shadows. Out of the corner of her eye. The shadows moved.. and from shadow came shadow. Softly, quietly, reverently. They came.

Image

They surrounded her. They knew her. They looked to her, and then to the moon. Their presence was a balm to her soul. And she felt the longing stir again. From within it came and she looked up at the sky, letting her resistance fall away. There was pain at first. There always was. Deep within, streaks of agony. Her face went pale, but her golden eyes did not darken. Shooting fire in her legs, feet, arms, hands. It enveloped her. She burned. She crouched low, moaning softly. And then, she was gone.

Image

They surrounded her. They snuffed her, letting out little kips of greeting. She bowed her head. Sentience was gone. She moved swiftly from the dwelling to the grass, following the light of the moon. Ready to sing to the bright light that bathed them in the soft night. From deep within a harsh growl became a lifting, lilting song of joy.
