Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.05.29

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Background ~
As noted in log posted by Chief Security Officer, Lt. Cmd Romy Magic, the Sentinel and the merchant ship it was escorting, the Freedom Pride, were attacked by two Kazon and a Klingon ships en route to the Aries IV colony.

The Freedom Pride was heavily damaged as a result, resulting in widespread injuries and death amont its crew.

I accompanied Lt. Cmd Magic to the Freedom Pride via transporter after the Kazon ships were destroyed, although the Klingon ship was able to escape and most likely remains at large.

Damage to the Freedom Pride itself resulted in a warp-core breech approximately 10 minutes after our arrival on board, necessitating expedient efforts in field treatment to stablize several of the surviving crew members for transport back to the Sentinel.

All crew members of the Sentinel were able to return safely along with the surviving Freedom Pride crew members in time for the Sentinel to reach a safe distance from the Freedom Pride prior to the core breech.

Surviving crew members were placed in emergency cots and biobeds in and near sickbay on the Sentinel, where triage was established by myself working with nurses and other assigned medical staff.

The Sentinel has continued on course toward the Aries IV colony, where a permanent well-equipment infirmary has been established. With that in mind, treatment of crew members has been enacted with the primary goal of ensuring that all living crew members remain in stable condition. The most critical crew members were treated to rectify the most life-threatening aspects of their injuries. Afterward, other surviving crew members were treated as best as possible in order to alleviate the most serious injuries, then to remedy patient suffering and provide as much comfort as possible.

The most critical patient beamed aboard was the female chief steward, of whom initial tricorder readings revealed the presence of a metal fragment imbedded in her chest.

Patient specifics are provided below.

~ Treatment: Human Patient - Female ~
* Immediate concern consisted of potential for metal shard in patient's left lower chest to have penetrated patient's thoracic wall, potentially presenting risk of critical trauma.
* Tricorder readings indicated implimation of shard had occurred between muscle fibers and was maintaining steady position without progressive movement toward internal vitals, so surgery en route to Aries IV was decided as the best option rather than placement of patient in stasis for treatment at colony infirmary surgical bay.
* To prevent further loss of blood, pressure pads were used by medical staff to control the bleeding of the penetrated area surrounding the metal shard.
* Internal scans were analyzed, to which it was determined no major arterial damage had occurred.
* Patient was injected via hypospray with 2.5cc's of Morphenolog, an analgesic to help alleviate the pain, followed by 2cc's Corophizine, an antibiotic, to fight any bacterial infections associated with the wound.
* Following those, 5cc's of Kayolane were injected in preparation for removing the metal shard surgically.
* Maintaining alignment using tricorder scan readings, a laser scalpel was implimented to cut through the skin in immediate proximity to the metal shard.
* Upon separation of surrounding muscle fiber, the shard was removed via surgical tweezers while medical staff maintained patient's physiological readings to ensure no occurance of reactive shock.
* A protoplaser was then used over the newly opened area of flesh to clean the wound and mend the exposed nerve endings.
* After scanning the area with a tricorder to make sure no other surrounding injuries existed, a Tri-Laser connector was used to repair any tendons, ligaments, and nerve endings damaged by the surgical procedure.
* The wound was then closed via use of an autosuture, providing an additional means of promotion of the healing process.
* In response to other more minor lacerations on the patient, a protoplaser was used to remove all contaminants.
* To finish, a dermal regenerator was administered to the primary wound as well as the minor lacerations, after which the areas were treated with sterile dressing containing Pseudocutan as an aide for the body to heal the wounds naturally.

~ Treatment: Bajoran Patient - Male ~
* Tricorder analysis of Bajoran patient, identified as the Freedom Pride's engineer, determined patient suffered from concussion to forward left upper quadrant of cranial area as a result of falling debris caused by the attack.
* Although lacerations and skin damage was determined in area surrounding the injury, no major bleeding was observed from analysis.
* As treatment, patient was injected with 5cc's of Alkysine to account for neurological damage, followed by 4cc's of Trianoline to alleviate symptoms associated with the concussive damage.
* Remaining injuries to area were determined to be routine, so a protoplaser, autosuture and dermal regenerator were used in combination to fully treat the remaining tissue damage exhibited by the patient.
* Finally, 10cc's of L-Synthetic Antigen were injected for anti-bacterial treatment, ending with 2cc's of Asinolyathin for associated pain from cranial damage

~ Treatment: Trill Patient - Male ~
* Patient brought in with severe burns on his upper arms and chest, likely the result of an explosion in close proximity. Patient was conscious and in significant pain.
* Scan analysis indicated presence of radiation damage, and as such radiation was determined to be the likely accelerant of the external and sub-dermal tissue damage. Scans also indicated the patient suffered from a mild dose of radiation poisoning.
* Immediate analysis confirmed patient was not joined with a symbiont, nor had ever been, so maintaining signficant Isoboramine levels was not a critical aspect of treatment.
* Treatment began for patient with injection via hypospray of 5cc's of Kayolane, a sedative to help relieve the intense pain.
* The patient was then injected with 3cc's of Kelotane to assist the skin in healing, followed by 2cc's of Hexatriol to stop further tissue damage.
* After scans revealed patient responding favorably to the initial treatment, the patient was injected with 2cc's of Corophizine, an antibiotic to help the body fight off infection.
* To protect the patient from further radiation poisoning, I injected him via hypospray with 5cc's of L-Hyronalin. I kept it to one dose as the radiation poisoning suffered by the patient appeared to be mild, and to not risk the chance of Hyronalyn poisoning.
* Next, a protoplaser was run across the patient's upper arms and chest to help cleanse away all contaminants, as well as align nerves and muscle fibers.
* In order to help heal the patient's radiation burns, Hypicate Cream was then applied to the patient's upper arms and chest, followed by Dermaplastic Grafts to accelerate the regeneration of the wounded skin.
* Finally, sterile Pseudocutan dressings were applied to the wounds to also assist in the natural healing process

~ Treatment: Other Patients ~
* Two other crew members of the Freedom Pride, a male Human and a female Andorian, were transported to the Sentinel for treatment.
* Both crewmembers were scanned by tricorders and other equipment, and were determined to only be suffering non-critical injuries, including various light burns, bruises and minor lacerations.
* Assistive medical staff were able to successfully treat both crewmembers as needed without any complications.

~ Death Report: Human Male ~
* The captain of the Freedom Pride was discovered to have died during the attack before medical treatment could be administered. His body was transported to the Sentinel for storage in stasis for eventual autopsy and report.

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.06.05

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Background ~
* Upon arrival of the USS Sentinel to the Aries IV mining colony, the survivors of the attack against the Freedom Pride cargo freighter (described in previous medical log) were beamed to the colony infirmary. After conferring with the colony's medical facility on site, I assisted in settling the arrivals into the infirmary's various biobeds.
* Soon after the arrival, however, the colony was hit by a series of seismic waves, causing significant tremors and structural damage to the facility as a whole. Multiple tears were caused to the structure's integrity, causing great risk to personnel inside because of the hazardous nature of the external planetary atmosphere, which was considered comparable to the K-class planet known as "Mars" in the Sol system.
* Reports came in that multiple members of the mining crew had been trapped below the surface, but electrical and mechanical problems caused by the tremors prevented immediate transport to the trapped personnel for treatment and rescue.
* A member of the Aries IV crew was personally carried to the infirmary by Administrator Yarin, who reported the crew member was working at a junction station which was damaged by the seismic tremors.

~ Patient - Symptoms ~
* Discolored "pasty" complexion
* Repeated bodily muscle twitches akin to an epileptic seizure.

~ Patient - Analysis ~
* Seizure - Tricorder scans detected abnormal electrical activity in the patient’s brain causing the patient’s body to shake rapidly and uncontrollably.
* Flash Burns - Tricorder scans detected damage to patient’s dermis apparently caused instantly by a high-voltage electric discharge.

~ Patient - Treatment ~
* Patient was stripped of his uniform in preparation for treatment for electrical burns and potential internal cranium damage
* Patient was injected via hypospray as follows:
-- 2cc's of Asinolyathin for muscle-spasms
-- 2.5cc's of Morphenolog as an anti-inflammatory
-- 3cc's of Kelotane for burn treatment
-- 10cc's of Lectrazine to stabilize cardiac rhythms and quell the seizures
-- 5cc's of Alkysine to deal with the nerve damage caused by the electrical shock
* Second-degree burns at various locations on the patient were treated by dermal regenerator
* No other treatable bodily injuries, cuts or damages were located on the patient

~ Patient - Post-Treatment ~
* Patient was allowed to rest, leaving his recovery to nature and the will of the Prophets

~ Afterward ~
* Colony medical staff have been alerted and are prepared for emergency treatment of any injuries caused to the trapped miners by their situation. One miner was indicated by personnel to have critical injuries involving major bleeding, an open fracture of the left leg, low blood oxygen and low blood pressure.

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.06.12

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Procedure: Initial Descent ~
* Following the series of tremors, word came that a number of miners were trapped underneath the surface.
* As the only access from the surface to the mines was via a large lift (elevator) system, power failures caused by the tremor damage temporarily prevented rescue teams from getting to the trapped miners.
* Eventually power was restored to the lift system, at which point UFS crew members proceeded together down to the mines to search for and treat survivors.
* One male crew member was located in the sealed crew bunk (sleeping) area, which contained pressure and a safe atmosphere to allow for breathing.

~ First Male Miner - Treatment ~
* Tricorder scans detected a deformed swollen area on the patient with redness and bruising around an injury on the right wrist, with the cause being a closed fracture.
* Tricorder scans also detected gastronomical distress resulting in nausea.
* Treatment was administered for pain, swelling and potential infection, including: 2.5cc's of Morphenolog as an analgesic, and 2cc's of Scopolamine for nausea
* A dermal regenerator and bone knitter were used in conjunction to repair the patient’s muscle and bone damage, and repair the damaged skin.
* The treated patient was released to return to the surface while we went in search of more critically injured miners outside of the crew buildings.

~ Procedure: Continued Search ~
* The Aries IV infirmary was alerted to have medical teams standing by for injured crew members, which we planned to send up to them as needed for treatment.
* Within the mines, two deceased miners were located, one with his faceplate smashed in on his environmental suit.
* Further on, another miner was found, his legs crushed and pinned beneath a large rock. Analysis determined he had about 10 minutes of air left in his oxygen tanks.

~ Second Male Miner - Treatment ~
* Tricorder scans determined both legs on the patient had been broken with multiple fractures resulting in open wounds and significant blood loss.
* Tricorder scans detected low blood perfusion to patient’s tissues, with inadequate tissue functions, resulting in the circulatory system being slower then normal, indicating shock.
* Tricorder scans indicated that pressure from the large rock on the patient’s legs was preventing the patient from immediately bleeding out.
* A localized coagulant was administered via hypospray to the area near the crushed legs to temporarily prevent excessive loss of blood.
* The patient was then injected via hypospray with 5cc's of Alkysine to deal with the neurological damage connected to the shock
* Treatments were then administered to the patient via hypospray to provide a sedative (5cc's of Kayolane) to keep the miner unconscious, along with an analgesic (2.5cc's of Morphenolog) to deal with his pain.
* After other crew members were able to lift the large rock off the patient's lower extremities, physical damage was immediately treated using a tri-laser connector, setting it for sterilization using a carbon-dioxide laser, then an argon laser for cauterization laser, followed by a quasi-continuous-wave dermal-regeneration laser
* Following treatment and confirmation the patient's health had stabilized, the low gravity allowed me to transport him over to an emergency hover stretcher for transport.
* At this point, the Aries IV medical team was alerted regarding the injuries of the patient, the need for immediate treatment in their surgical facility, and a request to meet the patient with an IV set up with electrolytes
* I then used the hover stretcher to safely move the patient to the mining elevator, where he was met by colony medical personnel and taken to the upper surface for emergency treatment

~ Procedure: Further Exploration ~
* At least three other miners were found further along the mine shaft, but all were deceased, with their bodies apparently being eaten by a previously unknown species of arachnid, similar in size to a Bajoran arachnid known as the ashikhan spider.
* Tricorder analysis and visual inspection revealed that one of the miners was killed by a puncture wound to the chest, within which was found to be a severed human arm. The arm was secured and brought back to the surface for later analysis.

~ Administrator - Cause of Death ~
* A colony administer accompanying Sentinel crew announced he was going back to the surface and left on his own. Soon after separating from the Sentinel crew and going out of sight into nearby mines, the sound of the administrator's screams was heard.
* Upon reaching the location of the scream, Sentinel crew discovered the severed head of the deceased administrator within the helmet of his environmental suit, surrounded by large amounts of blood.
* The helmet containing the severed head was taken both out of respect for the dead and for forensic medical analysis.
* The head was no longer in the helmet by the time I reached the mining elevator. Reports by other members of the Sentinel crew indicated an unknown life form had been able to quickly remove the head from the helmet and pull it back into the mining caves without my knowledge.

~ Conclusion ~
* Upon returning to the base colony via mining lift, the severed arm and empty helmet were carefully placed into a sealed container for isolation and later analysis.
* All tricorder readings taken during the mine exploration were saved, backed up, and made available to colony and Starfleet personnel as needed.

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.06.26

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~Background ~
* A being of a previously unknown alien species was captured for study in the mines of the Aries IV colony by crew of the USS Sentinel working with several assigned scientific experts, including a specialist in anthropology, and Dr. Connors, a Federation civilian xenobiologist.
* The being was captured by crew members luring it into a large metal cage, using themselves as "bait" to encourage the being to chase them before being caught for study in what was intended to be a harmless manner.
* For details of the precise methodology regarding the luring and capturing of the being, please consult security and science logs submitted regarding that topic by USS Sentinel crew on hand at the time.
* The capture of the being was orchestrated following the deaths of at least six mining staff, including the mining administrator, by an unknown alien entity living beneath the surface of the Aries IV colony.
* The capture was intended to allow crew members to ascertain the intelligence of the creatures which caused the deaths, and how best to handle their natural needs while eliminating any future deaths if possible.
* Of note is the fact that the reason for the attacks upon the miners remains unknown at this time, and the possibility that the being was being defensive, protecting eggs or seeking substance must all be taken into account when dealing with the situation.
* In preparation for possible needs of humanoid crew and other personnel, a makeshift infirmary/triage was set up in one of the underground crew quarters, using moved mattresses and IV stands constructed out of emergency medical pouch supplies and colony office equipment.

~ Post-Capture Observation ~
* Medical tricorder scans of the being returned complex neurological readings, indicating that the creature was either intelligent or was mentally connected to something intelligent.
* Lt. Cdr. Oola Quan, a Betazoid member of the Sentinel crew, declared the following after establishing a telepathic link with the captured alien: "This one is both angry, confused and curious about us", "It's got basic intelligence from what I'm sensing," and "This isn't a normal type spider."
* Further tricorder scans showed readings of mental activity at the level of standard humanoid intelligence, although the readings did not indicate whether the creature itself innately possessed the intelligence or if it was communicating with a creature of high intelligence.
* Quan indicated that telepathic emanations appeared to indicate the creature was communicating with a more intelligent being in a way that was, "the way ants work, not spiders ... like there's a queen giving the orders to the rest of them".
* After approximately seven minutes of captivity, the captured alien froze in place, at first appearing as if it had accepted its captivity ... but then a black liquid flowed from it's abdominal area, after which the alien suddenly turned on its back and died.
* Medical tricorder scans as well as telepathic observation from Lt. Cdr. Quan indicated the communication with the higher being stopped at the moment of the captured alien's death.
* Medical tricorder scans appeared to indicate the captured alien used its own defensive poisons on itself to cause death to itself for an unknown reason.
* Medical tricorder scans also were able to record an unusual type of sound being transmitted to the captured alien at the time of its death.
* The Medical Tricorder scans were able to record the sound for subsequent analysis by Dr. Connors. Whether the sound was a type of "kill order" sent by the higher intelligence as a command for the captured alien to self-terminate has yet to be determined.
* Tricorder scans indicated the captured alien was far more complex than more common non-sentient arachnoid lifeforms, to the point that the captured alien's physiology was as complex biologically as many mammalian species.
* Medical tricorder scans indicated the complexity of the captured alien possessed an innate intelligence level that could react to particularly complex gaseous compounds, such as pheromones.
* All pertinent medical tricorder information was uploaded to Dr. Conners and every other science officer and medical officer working on the biological and physiological analysis of the creature.
* With the possibility of intelligence by the beings appearing likely, the need for observing first-contact protocols has become relevant in regards to future contact with the species.

~ Transcript of Xenobiologist Recommendations - provided by Dr. Connors ~
* "We need to find a way to communicate with this queen or mother ... whatever you want to designate it. I wonder if there is a way we could disguise ourselves in a way to approach this queen. Pheromones or something to make us appear friendly."
* "I'm thinking we can translate our brain patterns to a form it can understand."
* "On some species Chemical sensors provide equivalents of taste and smell, often by means of setae. An adult Araneus may have up to 1,000 such chemosensitive setae, most on the tarsi of the first pair of legs. Males have more chemosensitive bristles on their pedipalps than females. They have been shown to be responsive to sex pheromones produced by females, both contact and air-borne."
* "I say we explore the doctor's (Jabara Eris) idea about tapping into the spider's communication network. I fear the death of this creature means we are without our own radio but perhaps even in death we can develop something ... meanwhile developing a spray to make us less threatening could be plausible. Either way we need to start carving up this specimen, which will allow us to be better prepared if we need to combat these creatures."

~ Additional Information ~
* For further data, please see the follow-up report concerning the autopsy of the alien life form conducted at the Aries IV Colony infirmary medical laboratories.

Autopsy: Arachnid Alien
Location of Procedure: Surface Infirmary, Aries IV Mining Colony

Officiating Physician: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD
Assisting: Julie Smith (Aries IV Medical Technician) and Philip Jones (Aries IV Nurse)

Date: 2422.06.30

Scientific Analysis of Subject - Apparent Classification
* Kingdom Animalia
* Subphylum Chelicerata
* Class Arachnid
* Order arancae clerck 1757
* Family Theraphosidae
* Higher class Mygalomorph

~ Background ~
* A deceased arachnid alien captured by USS Sentinel crew in the mines underneath the surface of the Aries IV colony was transported to the planetside infirmary for post-mortem analysis and autopsy.
* Holographic images of the subsequent autopsy are available upon request.

~ General Initial Analysis ~
* The captured being had the appearance of an unusually large arachnid akin to the exterior physiology of the large palukoo arachnids indigenous to the Bajoran moons. As such, the subject was apparently of taxon Chelicerata (which includes spiders, scorpions, pseudoscorpions, ticks, mites, horseshoe crabs, and sea spiders, among others).
* Size of the being put it at approximately 1.3 meters in length, and 0.65 meters in height when standing squarely on its eight legs.

~ Primary Determinations ~
* Analysis of neurological connections in the arachnid equivalent of a cranial cavity provided indications that the subject's brain appeared to possess a significant level of intelligence of at least the level of a Terran wolf or a Vulcan sehlat.
* As expected, chemoreceptors are present on the tarsi, especially those of the first legs. Details regarding this were provided for Dr. Chambers for use in determining the efficacy of potential pheromone-based communication with other subjects of the same species.
* Sexuality of the subject was determined to be female.

~ Cause of Death ~
* Internal scans as well as physical analysis determined by cutting into the subject's internal areas determined death by acidic liquification of critical internal organs.
* The acid which caused the death was determined by physical and tricorder analysis to have apparently been produced by the subject's own internal sacs.
* Analysis by computer reproduction of scans of subject acquired prior to death determined that the subject apparently used its own defensive poisons on itself to cause self-termination for an unknown reason.

~ Additional Determinations ~
* The nervous system was determined to be highly cephalized, consisting of a large nerve ring in the middle of the cephalothorax from which nerves arise.
* The legs of the alien have abundant setae, most or all of which are sensory receptors, chiefly mechanoreceptors sensitive to vibrations, touch, and air movements.
* Slit sense organs sensitive to strain in the cuticle were present at various places on the body, especially on the legs.
* The body of the alien was divided into an anterior cephalothorax with six pairs of appendages and a posterior abdomen. Respiration is via book lungs and/or trachea and excretion is via Malpighian tubules and saccate nephridia known as coxal glands.
* Antennae were not present.
* The segments of the cephalothorax were fused and covered by a dorsal shield, or carapace, with two present median eyes
* Internal adaptations indicated internal gas exchange and a waterproof integument.
* Digestion apparatus indicated internal digestion, as opposed to a standard requirement for external liquefication of nourishment before ingestion, as is common of many arachnid species
* The heart was determined to be a dorsal tube in the abdomen.
* Most of the ventral surface of the cephalothorax is protected by a large, heavily sclerotized
sternum formed by the fusion of four embryonic sternites
* Anterior to the sternum is a small triangular labium which extends anteriorly between the bases of the pedipalpal coxae. The labium is movable along its articulation with the sternum. It is the sternite of the pedipalpal segment. The chelicerae, pedipalpal coxae, and labium surround the mouth and enclose the preoral cavity that precedes the mouth. Within the preoral cavity is a prominent conical labrum located on the midline.
* The mouth of the alien was a triangular opening on the posterior surface of the labrum and is covered and closed by the labium.

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.07.03

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Overview ~
* The crew of the USS Sentinel, accompanied by Federation civilian xenobiologist Dr. Connors, were able to make first contact with the "queen" leader of the arachnoid colony below the surface of Aries IV.
* Communication with the “queen” produced the knowledge that the arachnoid colony had been had been acting in self-defense when they attacked and killed several miners and other members of the Aries IV colony.
* Computer analysis of the previous autopsy I performed on a deceased member of the arachnoid colony was able to determine that chemical effects of the mining operations were killing young members of the arachnoid species. This was confirmed through communication with the arachnoid queen.
* A mutual agreement was made between the arachnoid queen and Sentinel crew to cease both hostilities and mining operations until a Federation ambassador could arrive to help forge a workable compromise between the arachnoid and humanoid colonists.

~ Background ~
* A series of quakes at the Aries IV mining colony caused significant structural damage to several facilities and trapped miners below the surface.
* The wounded and deceased bodies of several miners were discovered during exploration of the mines by Sentinel crew
* Previously unknown species of large arachnoid lifeforms were discovered. A smaller species of arachnoid, possibly younger version of the larger arachnoids, were observed eating the bodies of deceased miners.
* Several miners were apparently killed and dismembered by large arachnoids, leading Sentinel crew to attempt to capture one of the larger members of the species.
* After capture, one of the larger female members of the species was determined to possess rudimentary intelligence, and was in mental contact with a significantly more intelligent member of her species. The captured female apparently committed suicide through use of naturally occurring internal acidic compounds before communication could be established.
* Subsequent analysis and autopsy of the arachnoid was performed by myself in the Aries IV infirmary.
* A pheromone spray intended to fool members of the arachnoid species into believing Sentinel crew members were members of their colony was created by Dr. Connors, but with the stipulation that the effects would last no more than approximately one half of an hour.
* A short-distance communication device, for use by a psychic humanoid (Betazoid, for example) was created by Dr. Connors using tricorder readings I took of the communication signals between the captured arachnoid and the arachnoid leader prior to the arachnoid’s suicide.
* Accompanied by Dr. Connors, Sentinel crew returned to the mines in an attempt to learn more regarding the arachnoid species and, if possible, make peaceful contact with the leader of the arachnoid colony.
* For full details, refer to previous logs filed by myself and other members of the USS Sentinel crew

~ Surface Hostilities ~
* Several larger members of the arachnoid colony ascended to the surface of Aries IV and swarm attacked both colonists and members of the USS Sentinel crew.
* The attacking arachnoids appeared to drop a type of acidic substance at various locations around the surface base, causing the lights to flicker, alarms to blare and significant breaches to appear in the walls of colony structures.
* Based on our previous findings, I reminded Sentinel crew members of the intelligence of the arachnoid attackers, and advised that they should not be killed unless absolutely necessary.
* Despite the intensity of the attacks using Federation-standard phasers, members of the arachnoid species were apparently not killed, but instead retreated back below the planet surface after being repeatedly hit by concentrated phaser damage.
* Sentinel crew members including myself were able to successfully turn away the attacking arachnoids through the use of phasers.
* Although several members of the Sentinel crew were wounded during the attacks, I was able to treat their injuries effectively using a dermal regenerator, hypospray injected medical solutions, and other tools from my field medical kit.

~ Exploration of Arachnoid Colony ~
* Following cessation of surface hostilities, members of the Sentinel crew descended into the mining caverns in an attempt to make contact with the arachnoid species.
* Upon reaching the mouth of the caverns, Dr. Connors sprayed the pheromone compound on each of the Sentinel crew members and prepared the communication device for use.
* Again, I stressed to crew members the intelligence of the arachnoid species, and reminded crew of the established incident between Starfleet crew members and members of the Horta species. (Federation records of the incident should be referenced for more information regarding the encounter with the Horta.)
* Member of the smaller versions of the arachnoid species were encountered, as well as numerous evidence of webbing as is standard among many previously known non-intelligent arachnoid species.
* Sentinel crew members were initially ignored by members of the arachnoid species they encountered, apparently as a result of the effectiveness of the pheromone spray.
* Larger members of the arachnoid species, dubbed “soldier” versions, possibly being mentally controlled by the arachnoid leader, were apparently unaffected by the pheromone spray and attacked members of the Sentinel crew during deeper exploration of the mines.
* Sentinel crew were able to defend themselves effectively against the brief attacks by solder arachnoids with only minor injuries, which were easily treated by myself through use of my field-medical kit tools.
* Sentinel crew members split into two teams to more efficiently explore the caverns.

~ Discovery of Arachnoid Social Structure ~
* Members of one Sentinel team discovered a large room which apparently served as a “nursery” for the arachnoid colony. Inside the room were dozens of large eggs (approximately one meter in height), apparently being tended and guarded by several larger members of the arachnoid species, who did not attack on our approach.
* Maintaining calm, slow movements, I entered the cavern and used my medical tricorder and a holographic imager to take a wide variety of readings of the arachnoid eggs. These readings were subsequently saved into permanent database storage and submitted to Starfleet personnel for analysis.
* Other members of the Sentinel crew discovered what appeared to be a “farm” in which members of the arachnoid species grew what appeared to be large “grasshopper” type creatures, apparently for use as food. Sentinel crew members were not attacked by the members of the arachnoid species tending to the “farm”. Holographic images of the “farm” were taken and provided for analysis of Starfleet personnel.
* Soon afterward, Sentinel crew members discovered the location of the “queen” arachnoid leader. Holoimages of the arachnoid leader were taken and filed for analysis by Starfleet at a later time.

~ Communication with Arachnoid Leader ~
* Using the device created by Dr. Connors, a Betazoid crew member (Lt Commander Oola Quan) approached the arachnoid leader to mentally conduct initial communication.
* Although about a dozen soldier spiders quickly approached and surrounded Sentinel crew, they stopped without making an attack then backed away as if being commanded to do so.
* Later reports from Quan indicated she informed the “queen” that we were there in peace, that we did not wish to fight them, that we did not mean to shake the arachnoid home, and that we did not know the arachnoids were below the planet surface.
* Quan indicated that the “queen” was upset by the shaking and damage to their colony, and said both that the colonists had poisoned the arachnoids, and that falling rocks caused by mining operations had killed arachnoid children.
* I advised Quan to communicate to the “queen” that we respect her eggs, that we understand she is protecting them, and that we will not harm them.
* The “queen” subsequently informed Quan that arachnoid children were being harmed and killed by poisonous runoff and other effects of the tritanium mining operations, although larger members of the arachnoid species eventually developed an immunity.
* At approximately this time, computer analysis of readings taken by my autopsy of the arachnoid confirmed that the arachnoid beings have an allergy to tritanium, which primarily affects their young until they build an immunity to it. As a result, the mining was killing the arachnoid hatchlings, and the arachnoids were attacking miners in defense of their children.
* A variety of possible solutions were discussed, including abandoning the mining operation entirely, or assisting the arachnoids in moving to a safer location.
* During the conversation, I stressed that Federation Prime-Directive orders and First-Contact protocols specifically prohibit cultural contamination of intelligent indigenous beings, and it appeared the arachnoids were indigenous to Aries IV and had lived there in peace prior to the arrival of mining colonists.
* Quan communicated an apology to the arachnoid leader regarding the damage and deaths to their children.
* In response, the arachnoid leader indicated they had been part of a larger colony but had become separated from the others after mining caused a collapse of arachnoid colony tunnels.
* The arachnoid leader indicated they would consider moving their own colony to a different location if necessary.
* Throughout the conversation, I used my medical tricorder to record the situation using multi-dimensional scanners in an attempt to analyze the rhythm and patterns of the spider queen's communications with Quan. Afterward, full details of the scan results were uploaded to Starfleet data repositories.

~ Determination of Further Action ~
* It was mutually agreed that a Federation ambassador would be sent to Aries IV to attempt to work out a compromise between the arachnoid leader and humanoid mining colonists, that that mining operations would be immediately halted until the compromise could be reached.
* After concern was brought up by Sentinel crew regarding the possibility of colonists harming the arachnoids before the compromise could be reached, I recommended the following: that I could set up a makeshift Bajoran shrine to the Prophets in the caverns and declare the tunnels to be a temple. As a registered Prylar, I could officially do that, which would legally and culturally protect the caverns as a religious site. I followed up this suggestion by drawing a Bajoran meditation symbol into the surface of one of the cavern walls, setting up a basis for a shrine if needed.

Doctor, Tranquility Station, on assignment with the USS Sentinel to Aries IV

Computer, begin personal log.

Things are going great, finally, with the intelligent arachnoid species we encountered on Aries IV. Praise the Prophets.

We established communication, halted hostilities, halted mining, and we're getting news of possible Federation ambassadors coming to forge a peaceful compromise between the queen and representatives of the mining company.

Pause personal log.

Resume log.

This is WONDERFUL! I just got access to the Sentinel's new orders ... and I HAVE to read it aloud!

*ahem*

Captain Rahn, you are hereby requested and required to take the runabout USS Lazarus to Aries IV to ferry Ismod Deici, a Betazoid ambassador, to negotiate mining rights with the arachnid species Starfleet made first contact with recently. This mission is extremely important as we are in need of the tritanium but have to uphold our highest values to respect the lives of other species and their rights to their home world. Ambassador Ismod will take point on the negotiations.
... We have received a petition from the Tartarus Mining Guild regarding the halting of mining operations due to the 'attack' of the arachnid species. ... They are claiming the holdup is unlawful as the species has not been confirmed as being native to Aries IV. They are understandably upset over the loss of their workers. There have been several encrypted communications between the mining guild and the colony. We do not have lawful authority to decrypt these and view the contents.
... While we do not expect trouble, you are to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of all personnel. Good luck Captain.

Wait ... they think they may be not native? I'm sure they are ... they must be.

Okay, that's it ... if things are quiet in sickbay today, I'll ask if I can head to the science lab and run some tests to prove for certain that the arachnoids ARE indigenous to Aries IV. That'll make things solid, and the miners will have to accept the deal!

Pause log.

Resume.

I got the assignment I wanted, and I'm in the Aries IV science lab on the surface, running a series of parallel analysis of the DNA microstructures taken from the report and findings of the arachnoid autopsy I completed here a few days ago.

I've got the comms on in the background, and I've been listening for any news of the negotiations while the computer completes the analysis.

Excellent! I just heard the Ambassador say that negotiations are going great! It seems the arachnoid beings need assurance to protect their nest, especially the young. Wait, trying to catch what Captain Rahn is saying ... something about wondering "if if they focused the mining operations to remove the tritanium closest to the nest then can alter the tunnels away from the nest" and sealing the tunnels if the arachnoids prefer not to have contact with the mining colony.

Ahh ... good ... the results are coming in. I'm praying to the Prophets I see what I hope, and ...

YES!!!

The computer analysis of the cellular structure and DNA of the arachnoid lifeforms is complete ... and ... they ARE indigenous to Aries IV!

Or ... to be precise ... the analysis showed a 97.62 percent chance of being accurate regarding the species being native to this planet.

I'll broadcast it to the Sentinel crew and ambassadors immediately! This is wonderful! Now the miners will have no choice but to work with the ambassadors for a compromise!

Okay ... my analysis determining the indigenous nature of the arachnoid species was uploaded to their personal dataPADDs for review.

Now ... let's see ... I'll send the results to Starfleet as well, so they can get it all logged and filed with their science department ... and ambassador department, and legal department ... so that they can make sure that first-contact and prime-directive protocols are followed. Hmm ... from what I know, that'll mean that the arachnoids lives are as important, if not more important, than the lives of the Starfleet personnel.

Good.

Hmm ... while I'm at it, I'll send a note to the Vedek running the Bajoran monastery I was at for a few years ... those were nice years ... anyway, yeah, and I'll ask him to make sure he forwards it to the Vedek council, just so they can have it on file that I set up a shrine to the Prophets in one of the arachnoid passageways, thereby sanctifying the area as a religious temple and protected cultural habitat.

Okay, good ... all sent!

Even though they're not humanoid, it's good to know the arachnoids will be treated with the same level of respect as the humanoids they're dealing with. Everything should be great, now ...

What the ...

WHAT WAS THAT??? It sounded like an explosion!!! By the Prophets ... what .... an accident? I ...

Where's my communicator. There ...

What in the name of the Prophets is going on down there? So help me ... Starfleet has been sent proof that these arachnoids are indigenous ... so if anybody is killing them ... there will be retribution, I'll make sure of it!

Pause log.

Resume log.

They're dead. All of them.

I'm trying to speak through the tears ... what happened?

I was just ... we were just there ... just the other day ... a new species ... new life ... a new culture ...

The queen is dead. All of the other arachnoids are dead. The hatchlings ... dead. All of them.

I still don't know what happened. I'll see what I can find out.

Pause log.

Resume.

I'm trying to control myself. I am a medical officer. I respect life.

I will not find a phaser rifle and run down there.

There are marines. They're supposed to have been protecting the ambassadors and the arachnoids.

What the hell happened?

I've been recording all the communications ... what scant information I'm getting ... for their eventual trials ... for murder of an intelligent species."

The miners. From what I've heard, a few miners ... evil ... they don't deserve to live ... miners ... killed all the spiders ... I mean, the arachnoid beings ... all of them ... out of greed ... because of evil, human prejudice ...

Gul Dukat would've been proud of them. He'd laugh and pat them on the back and say, "Job well done. Drinks are on the house."

I'm shivering out of anger. I have to remember ... the Prophets called me for peace ... to protect life. Vengeance is useless.

But I want vengeance so much. So very much now.

What's that beeping?

Oh ... okay ... my messages ... to Starfleet and Bajor ... got to a relay station, which just sent back confirmation. I'm not sure when they'll reach Starfleet and the Vedek ... but they're on their way.

*sighs*

I was just told that the Marines and other Sentinel crew are about to head to the holodeck for a training exercise, to try a strategy about rescuing the hostages.

Yeah. A few lives might be saved after so many were lost.

*sighs*

What the miners did was genocide. Pure genocide.

What was it Gul Darhe'el, the "Butcher of Gallitep", said ... oh, yeah ... "What you call genocide, I call a day's work."

Let me get all this new info sent to Starfleet ... and to Bajor.

I'll wait to hear back from Vedek Garcum and see what he says. I'm sure it won't be pretty.

He lived through the Occupation years. I was just a child, but he ... suffered through them.

And I'm sure he won't exactly have a pleasant attitude when he hears what the miners did.

Nothing justifies genocide. As Bajorans, we were faced with that every day ... every waking moment ... that the Cardassians could suddenly decide we weren't the effort, and would kill us all.

Let's just say that the Bajoran government isn't going to be happy to hear what happened ... especially, to intelligent beings living under the protection of a sanctified shrine to the Prophets.

For now, I'll wait. And meditate. And pray.

Jabara out.

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.07.17

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Overview ~
* Following a holographic training exercise as preparation, Sentinel crew members attempted a rescue/capture operation on Aries IV involving three genocidal human terrorists who had taken hostage a group of Federation ambassadors and their two Starfleet Marine bodyguards.
* The three terrorists had at the time already massacred an entire colony of dozens (if not hundreds) of intelligent arachnoid inhabitants indigenous to Aries IV.
* The motive of the terrorists was apparently greed and hateful xenophobic bigotry.
* For more thorough details of the background of the situation, refer to both my own previous medical logs and the logs of other Sentinel crew members, particularly those of security officer Romy Magic.

~ Medical Treatments - None ~
* No treatable injuries resulted from the rescue/capture operations.
* The two Marines who had been captured were both mercilessly killed by one of the terrorists via the use of explosives while the Marines were restrained in a location underground removed from potential rescuers. Their deceased bodies were eventually recovered with no treatment possible.
* The other hostages were safely rescued, and the three terrorists were captured without any harm to them or Sentinel crew members.

~ Medical Involvement ~
* The primary role I performed as the crew's medical officer involved an attempt to incapacitate via unconsciousness the terrorists and the hostages.
* To this end, I used the Aries IV medical and scientific replicators to put together a number of small, easily breakable glass vials containing one of two gaseous compounds:
-- a concentrated form of sonambutril with the intention of producing unconsciousness quickly.
-- a corrosive intended to produce holes in the oxygen-intake tubes of the breathing systems of self-contained environmental suits being worn by the terrorists. The corrosive was formulated to be strong enough to produce small holes in rubber tubing but weak enough that it would produce only irritation and minor but easily treatable burns upon exposed skin.
* The glass canisters were placed by myself at various locations on a transport ship set for use at the request of the terrorists as a means of escape passage off Aries IV.
* The canisters were precariously arranged in various hidden locations on the ship with the intention of them breaking and activating at the onset of the shaking of the ship during takeoff from Aries IV.
* It was hoped the corrosive gas and sonambutril working in combination would ensure that the terrorists on the ship could be quickly knocked out in a way that would allow the safe recovery of the hostages in their proximity.
* It should be also noted that the above described plan was approved by higher ranking officers during discussion of various options prior to commencing the rescue operations.

~ Medical Involvement - Results ~
* One terrorist entered the transport ship by herself, but left without effect after being unable to determine how to operate the ship.
* After she and one of the other terrorists were captured elsewhere by Sentinel crew, the remaining terrorist entered the transport ship with the ambassador hostages.
* Upon entering the ship, the terrorist announced that the two Marine officers were still in the caverns and were rigged with deadly explosives that would go off unless the terrorist sent a disengaging signal, which he said he would do upon escaping with the ship into warp.
* As I had left the ship, and all Sentinel crew were a distance from the ship, the terrorist was able to take off unimpeded, and was able to program the ship to go to warp.
* The gas canisters apparently worked as intended, rendering the terrorist and hostages unconscious after the ship lifted away from the surface of Aries IV. Nonetheless, the ship went into warp as programmed by the terrorist prior to unconsciousness.
* Because of the unconsciousness of the terrorist pilot, the disengage signal was not sent in time, and the Marine hostages were killed by the explosive charges before a rescue attempt could be made.
* While the pilot and hostages were unconscious, the transport ship was intercepted by Starfleet personnel. The terrorist was captured and the hostages were safely freed at that time.

~ Followup ~
* A rudimentary shrine dedicated to reverence of the Divine Celestial Prophets had been consecrated by myself on one of the walls of the underground caverns used as the home of the arachnoid beings prior to their slaughter by the humans terrorists.
* If possible before my return to Tranquility Station, I will attempt to set up a simple but more substantial shrine in or near the caverns or, failing that, at another suitable location on Aries IV.
* Following that, as time permits, I plan to conduct at the site the blessed chant and prayer for the dead in honor of the pagh of the arachnoids tragically slain by the terrorists.
* Upon our return to Tranquility Station, I plan to contact the Bajoran Vedek Assembly as a Prylar to request that a permanent memorial be constructed at the location to commemorate the lives of the victims, and to have the area formally dedicated as a protected Bajoran religious site.
