Class Synopsis/Outline:

Why radio astronomy?
What are radio telescopes? How do they work?
What is the role of radio astronomy on the big picture of astronomy?

Radio astronomy plays an essential role in modern-day astrophysics and is a key complement to optical astronomy. Compared to optical astronomy, which is sensitive to the hot universe (stars are generally a few thousand degrees Celsius), radio telescopes operate in the millimeter wavebands (any electromagnetic with a wavelength greater than 1 mm is a radio wave) and probe the cold universe (around -250 degrees Celsius). The difference light and radio waves is that they have a longer wavelength (and thus more penetration than light) and are lower in frequency than visible light (thus they suffer less interference).

radio astronomy has led to substantial increases in astronomical knowledge, particularly with the discovery of several classes of new objects, including pulsars, quasars and radio galaxies, and is a subject worth studying.
