At the time when navigators had a very hard time to determine their longitude Galileo discovered how to determine it using Io's (Jupiter's moon) orbit. The Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625 —1712) then set out an experiment to test Galileo's idea sending one of his employees (the French astronomer Jean(not Luc
) Picard to Tycho Brahe’s Observatory in Denmark. There Picard hired the services of Ole Roemer to help him develop a timetable of Io's occultations behind Jupiter. But Roemer realized that though Io's speed in it's trajectory around Jupiter was constant, the observation of it's occultations varied in time. If it was not related to the moon's orbital speed (it always circles Jupiter every 42 and a half hours) the only conclusion possible was astounding, for at the time light was considered to have infinite speed.,
