INTELLIGENCE REPORTS - USS Atlas

Responsible for gathering intelligence, they have the patience to read through a database for hours on end, and the cunning to coax information from an unwilling giver.

The planetary body categorized as Hapke 8026-5a is primarily aquatic in nature. The current dominant species is chordatic in origin and finds underwater existence preferable to terrestrial based existence. Their diet is largely dependant on live undersea creatures. Cooking is somewhat foreign to the Namadolians, although in recent years, due to various races visiting their planet as a tourist destination they have started experimenting with other types of food preparation.

The planet itself has reached a technology level roughly equivalent to 2200s Earth and have had warp capacity for approximately 50 years. Their general level of technology is less sophisticated than Federation standard technology.

The society tends towards a bartering system for trade, preferring to work with items that are more desirable and rare for commerce, dilithium was mentioned as something very much in need as a trade medium. This is very common with new warp capable species, as their need for the crystals for their warp engines is still at a nascent stage.

The Namadolians were hospitable and friendly to the crew of USS Atlas, likely because of their previous dealings with USS Maxwell. They are intelligent and thoughtful, showing a strong level of inquisitiveness and they seem to appreciate the same in return.

The Namadolians have abandoned organized religion in favour of scientific pursuits, believing that the two are incompatible. This is not uncommon for species at their level of development. This indicates a possibility for science to become the medium of worship or will potentially pave the way for a spiritual revival at some point if they follow common trends in development. That will, of course, remain to be seen. I have sought to acquire copies of their society’s myths and legends in case they may become useful to us in the future.

These myths and legends will feed well into the various finds recently uncovered underwater on Nehan. Two columns with writing similar to those uncovered under Pinastri but far older and what looks like the sarcophagus of, if the inscription is true, a god. The name was Akil-Tahuti, which translates as “Intelligent One, God of the Land, Sky and Seas”. The inscription homes that he can travel with us, whoever us is, to the stars and find a new home. The investigation into this matter continues but seems to bind Nehan to Pinastri.

Isolated from other Kazon and other space-faring races, the Kazon-Edozuk, led by Maje Vogark have carved out a little spot for themselves in the Al Suran Sector. While not outwardly expansionist or aggressive, the Edozuk are mostly interested in being left alone and isolationist to the point that they will destroy others chancing upon them. Unlike other Kazon tribes, they do not seek to acquire the technology of other peoples. Despite their not employing other peoples’ technology, they seem to be advancing and thriving. Currently their phaser systems are equivalent to Federation Standard, their shields are slightly less than Federation Standard, and they employ a pulse wave photonic torpedo system. While the photonic torpedo is less effective than Federation Standard photon torpedoes, the pulse wave allows it to ‘cut through’ some of the shielding of vessels, evening some of the damage and odds.

The Kazon-Edozuk split from the Oglamar rather spectacularly after Voyager was encountered. Those in the Edozuk wanting to remain separate and apart from Starfleet, not wishing to invite conflict where it was unnecessary while the Oglamar famously was belligerent towards Voyager.

It has been confirmed that the Kazon-Edozuk are exploring past the Hapke Cluster. It is likely that they have started this exploration so they have the best chance of establishing new territories without running into other Kazon, Romulan, or Starfleet groups there. On stardate 220927, the Kazon-Edozuk encountered USS Atlas. The Atlas was surveying a Class L planet, looking for mineral wealth that could help allies in the area. They Edozuk claimed the planetary area and, in short order, attacked USS Atlas when they did not move up fast enough. The Atlas was able to hold their own against several Kazon vessels, however they were penetrating shields, making them dangerous and problematic in the region. This seems to be part of at least a Kazon-Edozuk expansion effort and possibly a larger push by several Kazon factions.

The Benthans are a warp capable species associated with the Delta Quadrant Benthan System, as well as Benthos and Bentha. They wer encountered in 2374 by USS Voyager when LT Tom Paris was attacked by the Benthan Guard in the Kotaba Expanse.

The Benthan Guard are a military/policing organization. Their technology is roughly Federation equivalent with the following attributes:

Image

Ships are capable of roughly warp 9.2

Shields are tetryon based covariant in nature, making them difficult to pierce with anything less than quantum torpedoes.

The ship has six distruptor arrays and two photon torpedo launchers.

The Benthan Guard are extremely bureaucratic in nature, care must be taken to follow their systems when entering their space. A willingness to cooperate, especially with respect to filling out necessary requisitions and forms, goes a long way to placate the Benthan Guard.

After meeting with Te’ellis, I believe that a larger organization does operate behind the individuals that abducted her. The group, hitherto, has no name, however these thugs seemed to be attempting to bring themselves to greater prominence. The individuals themselves that abducted Te’ellis could have been a substantial danger to a less prepared and trained Federation Citizen, which immediately causes some concern. Most worrying is the fact that a person named Kessange seems to be running a larger organization.

Intelligence Branch needs to gather more information on this Kessange person and ensure that we have more details about what the group does and who their targets are.

The thugs dealt with had low end technology, most likely stolen when available. Disruptors were the primary used technology due to their lack of a stun setting, which is troubling but unsurprising. The criminals themselves were petty in nature, using classic intimidation techniques and had little understanding of Federation protocols, species, etc. While this is unsuprising on the whole, the fact that they knew a “Vulcan” existed in the first place as separate from other Federation species is telling that someone else, perhaps a larger organization, has at least basic information on the Federation and those within it.

My recommendation is to dispatch available and currently unassigned agents in order to infiltrate, surveil and otherwise get intelligence on this unnamed group.

On 221201, I met with Te’ellis, the ship’s Galley Manager on USS Atlas to discuss a crime that was perpetrated against her. At this time I am adding my professional notes on this subject for file purposes.

Te’ellis is a strong willed and physically able subject. She was able to hold off various assailants both physically and mentally for a long period of time. I have no difficult believing at all that Te’ellis was able to take control of her situation.

Her demeanour during the interview was polite and she used classic evasion techniques to attempt to get me off topic, pressing me to see how far she could go in terms of avoiding answering. This wasn’t because she had something to hide, I believe she was testing me and my own abilities. In general, she was compliant and honest, recalling events with the kind of clarity that someone trained to observe usually shows. Several of her behaviours were reminiscent of how an intelligence agent should behave if captured and finds themselves being interrogated. Some of these behaviours included:

- accepting food or drink to put the offerer at ease, but not consuming it for fear of drugging or other issues with it
- staged facial expressions and movements, also meant to put the interviewer at ease
- attempts to move the interviewer off topic several times as a testing method
- attempts to ‘relate’ with the interviewer in ways to personify ones self, making any potential punishment lessened

I have little doubt that part of this is due to cultural issues that the subject had with the Tal’Shiar, as she would have grown up with that influence in her life regularly and it would have been a concern throughout the Romulan Empire. However, I also noticed that when pushed, the subject was more than willing to assert herself and the veneer of polite calm dissipated, if only for a moment. The sobriquet “Viper” is well earned in her case. There is something very dangerous lying underneath the surface and it is my belief her kidnappers were lucky to escape their abductee with their lives.

My belief is that while she was in peril for her life the subject ‘took notes’ using either her own blood or the blood of her captives, perhaps on a scrap of clothing from one of them. The fact that she showed this level of foresight is impressive, but also shows a level of training, ability, and calm that is the hallmark of Intelligence personnel. This is further exemplified by the fact that the subject decided to 'deal with her captors' directly instead of sending a distress signal when she had the chance.

I do believe that at one point Te’ellis was Tal’Shiar, or at least trained by them. This does not mean that she currently is employed by them as defection is both likely and possible. More information on the subject should be amassed and included in the future.
