Project Atlas Science Mission for 210216

While the fields of science are very specific, non-specialized science officers serve to assist the specialists in their tests and analysis. All Science Officers are dedicated to Seeking out new and researching old phenomenons, species and planets.

Branch Commander’s Log

Location: Drydock at Pinastri Shiphards, Pinastri System

Alert Status: Green

UFS Command has given clearance for the Prometheus class USS Atlas, captained by Radovid Thyron, to be used for extended branch training missions. For the last several months, the ship has been in drydock being refitted for extended long range exploration and reconnaissance missions, including adding onboard lab facilities, updated and more powerful sensor suites, sacrificing several of her phaser arrays in the process. The refit process is complete enough for Command to authorize a short term trial run for Project Atlas.

Several months ago, both the USS Maxwell and the USS Veracruz had encounters with living singularities in the Sylleran Sector Block: The Veracruz encountered a mature specimen that nearly destroyed the ship, and the Maxwell encountered what they believed to be an adolescent. The Atlas is on loan to Science Division to take a team of scientists to track down the origin of these creatures and observe from a safe distance. The expedition will depart at 5pm SLT, Stardate 210216.

In service,
Lt. Commander Drewski Northman
Mission Commander

Sounds simple enough, right? Who knows what will happen... Welcome to a brand new opportunity for roleplay and learning the ropes of the Science Branch! This Tuesday, we will be doing a test run for Project Atlas, a way for us to conduct branch themed missions and longer term expeditions (think Science-branch task forces, 4 weeks in length where every aspect of the branch roleplay will be covered).

If you’re new to Science or a seasoned veteran, there’s always something new to learn! These missions will be reliant on the creativity of the participants, so who knows what will happen? Your imaginations and the scientific method will be our guides.

* Don’t worry about how to fit this in with your normal ship or station posting. Think of these missions as side projects that take place during the time between your normal missions. Think of it like when we see various crew members returning to the Enterprise from symposiums, projects, or other things. (Though the odds of getting abducted by Romulans on your way back to your post or running into a groundhog-day inducing space/time anomaly are much lower with us....maybe.)

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advice that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publicly, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams, and as this is a Science Division mission, let’s use Science to solve our problems as best as we can!

*Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

**Computer, begin recording.**

I assumed temporary command of the USS Atlas on Stardate 210216 for the purpose of conducting a trial run of the Atlas project for extended branch training tours. Captain Thyron joined us on the bridge for the initial mission. We departed Pinastri on a heading toward the Sylleran sector block to follow up on previous sightings by Federation ships of what seem to be living singularities. Our goal was to assess any dangers, learn more about these creatures, and if possible locate where they came from. In preparation, I reviewed important information about singularities with the science team onboard, and had them set sensors to detect any subspace anomalies.

After several hours, we were diverted from our mission when we received an urgent distress signal from a group of UFS Marines and civilians. They had been shot down on a deserted planet by remnants of the Kzem not far from our location. Helmsman Walsh performed a high warp turn and set course to answer the distress call. We were immediately fired upon by dozens of small Kazon escorts and fighter craft. I ordered the Atlas to engage Multi Vector Assault Mode to deal with the large group of small ships. Tactical officer Gale engaged the enemies, firing at will and using coordinated attack patterns with all three sections to even the odds.

When things seemed to clear up, another dreadnought class ship rounded from the dark side of the planet and engaged us, firing a plasma lance and doing damage to the Gamma section of the ship. We sustained small hull breaches in decks 12 and 14 and plasma fires, but no lives were lost. We reassembled the ship for better shield coverage and avoided the front firing arc of the much larger ship. Our phasers seemed ineffective against their shielding, so we engaged with torpedo spreads. After the dreadnought fired twice more, we noticed significant heat buildup in the weapon. I ordered a concentrated torpedo burst targeting the coolant system in the aft of the enemy ship, then we swung out in the firing arc again to tempt them. The plan was successful, causing a chain reaction in the Kzem ship, destroying it, but catching us in the shockwave. We sustained damage to the EPS grid and several bridge stations will need replacing.

As soon as the situation was clear, we dropped to yellow alert and began evacuating the Marines. Medical was on hand in the transporter room to administer treatment. I visited Lt. Col. Asbrink in sickbay, and he tried to debrief me, although he was badly injured. He mentioned a stockpile of chemical and nuclear weapons on the planet, as well as potential Romulan activity in the Alienum system. Please see his report for more details. The Atlas will be returning to clean up the illegal weapons and deal with any stragglers after we disembark at Pinastri.
