Log Entry:

Captains Markus, Quar and I had been attending a number of official ceremonies and meetings on Pinastri, as representatives of Astraios Colony.
We had hired a small low altitude flying craft in order to do a little sightseeing before our scheduled departure back to Astraios.

Our planned sightseeing however turned into a search and rescue mission, after a major catastrophe occurred following the eruption of a previously dormant volcano.
From the air we could see the volcano erupting with lava flowing down. Further on we saw buildings on fire and crashed shuttlecraft.

We landed and immediately offered our services to the search and rescue teams that had been quickly established.
Then we took off again and flew around the devastated area, informing those rescue teams on the ground, the location of a number of casualties.

We will use the rest of our time here on Pinastri assisting best we can, before heading back to Astraios.

Officer's Log stardate 160507, Lieutenant San Diavolo, Pinastri Colony.

With the USS Sheppard still in the dry dock, the majority of the crew, myself included, was on the surface as vulcanic activity leveled most of the buildings and left the campus grounds a steaming heap of devastation. After securing a small perimeter for Medical to triage and treat I set out to search for survivors. I found Captain Blinder incapacitated at the base of the Academy building. Lacking proper medical tools I was unable to perform a thorough exam, but a superficial search revealed a broken leg and a perforated chest. With communication down, there was little I could do except stay with her until ltjg Naiver and major Godric showed up so they could summon a medic.

I joined the units that swept the academy building. After the rooms that could reasonably be reached were declared clean, I climbed the outside building to an isolated part, still in flames, and discovered Capt Shran pinned under two construction beams. Several officers arrived on the scene, but when even our combined strengths could not move the beam, I phasered it to ribbons and accompanied capt Shran to the infirmary. It was there where the news of the prison break reached me, so I set out to seek out escapees.

I joined up with ltjg Stormchyld, who was tracking a dangerous looking prisoner. When the trail lead through a boiling stream of water over still-glowing stone, I had to take a detour. When I recovered ltjg Stormchyld, he was under attacked from the prisoner, so I fired no less than twelve jolts set to stun, one of them downing ltjg Stormchyld. The assailant seemed slightly impressed, but shortly after made a full recovery, knocked out cdr Portland and ltcdr Toocool.

An evac order was issued, so I helped checking the officers involved and loading them on board the medical shuttle, then gathered the USS Sheppard crew in a shuttle headed for Tranquility. Conform protocol I checked my phaser configuration, which turned out to be consistent with my experience of the situation, leading to the conclusion that the escaped prisoner can only have been a hologram or a collective hallucination. Given the number of telepathes among our ranks, the duress they must have been under, and the presence of toxic gases in the atmosphere, my preference leans to the latter.

Well security officers seeing things must report for medical exam on the nearest possibility that presents itself, so this is Lieutenant San Diavolo, checking out. Never let a chance go by to meet a cute doctor and talk about your fantasies. (giggle)

[Teresa Firelight Story]

The Durant had returned to Pinastri and I have been given shore leave. I wasted no time changing into civies and beaming down to Starfleet Headquarters, where officer quarters had been arranged for me to use.

I was in my room when there was a huge Pinastri-quake. The building shook violently and sections collapsed. I tried to use my combadge to hail the Durant, but something was interfering with communications. I could not use the comms wall unit either-- there was a power failure and it was dead.

I began thinking of alternative ways to contact my ship … perhaps find a shuttle and use it's comm system? .. perhaps find a station that was not down, etc. Then I heard a lady screaming in pain and crying for help. I ran to where her cries were coming from, and found a cadet who was buried under rubble where the ceiling had collapsed. I tried to reassure her before calling out for assistance – but no one was around. No one came to help. So I began lifting the rubble off of her, one piece at a time. It was a long, slow and tiring process for me, and an extremely painful process for her. She lost consciousness. I was really worried about her and tried to work faster, hoping to get her free and carry her to assistance.

Thankfully I heard footsteps approaching, and I called out for them to help me free her. To my surprise, this was not a Starfleet officer, or even a civilian. It was a criminal who had escaped from Pinastri's Prison – still wearing his prisoner jumpsuit. He had a phaser in his hand and pointed it at me.

“Oh good, a hostage” he said.

“If you want a hostage, you are going to have to help dig her out,” I replied.

“Fat chance,” he said. “Now stop moving that rubble and come with me, or I will shoot you.”

I paused, wondering if it was risking my life to help a cadet who might already be dead. Then I heard her moan softly, and I knew what I must do.

“If you want a hostage, then you defeat your goal if you shoot me. A dead hostage will be useless to you.”

He paused, looking confused. It was like he was trying to think what to do, and he knew my words rang true. He stood there, frozen in place, phaser pointed at me. Then he started to back away from me.

“Put down that phaser and pick up a piece of rubble” I said in my best command voice.

He obeyed! I tried hard to hide my surprise.

“Grab this piece of rubble and help me.. it is too heavy for me to lift off of her by myself.”

Again, he did what I told him to do. We continued to work together trying to free her. After a bit, he bent over her, and softly touched her face, as is stroking her cheek. “You are gonna be ok girlie.” he said.

At this point I realized he had probably been Starfleet at one point in his career... which is why my command demeanor in ordering him to help had worked.

“So you were once an officer?” I asked as we worked to lift another piece of rubble off of her. She was almost free now. And she was loosing consciousness again.

“I was... LTjg Flinahan Callahan at your service.” He had an edge of sarcasm in his voice, but also a tinge of longing. “Well at least a was a LTjg til my CO busted me for Gambling.”

“Well, Lt, we almost have her free. Once we do, you pick her up and we will carry her to the nearest Triage Area. Medical most be arriving and setting those up by now....

“I cant do that. I need to get out of here. I have already been in jail a year and have 4 more to go. I wont last that long.... I will help you dig her out and then I will be on my way.”

“You got a 5 year sentence for Gambling?” I moved another piece of rubble off of her. “That seems rather extreme.”

“Yea my CO is a hardass. I was just running a pool to guess when Ens Jamison was going to have her baby.” He grunted as he moved a heavy piece of rubble. “He said I was a bad influence and was corrupting his crew.”

“Well Lt Callahan, I am a Fleet Captain, and if you will help me try to save this cadet, I will do what I can to get your sentence reviewed. I would think 30 days in the brig was more than sufficient for such a crime, and I expect the Judge Advocate will agree with me on that.”

He paused, still holding a piece of rubble, and looked at me as if sizing me up. I was pretty sure he was trying to decide if I was telling the truth, or just trying to manipulate him into helping me save the cadet. Then he half-shrugged and continued moving the rubble.

“To tell you the truth, ma'am... at this point I am gonna do what I can to save her, whether you help me or not. I feel like I have gotten to know her a bit as I helped dig away the rubble... and there is no way I am gonna let her die.”

“Spoken like a true Starfleet officer.” I smiled, and then continued pulling away rubble.

“Thank you Ma'am.” he said.

“No really, I meant it, LT. Now you are behaving like a Starfleet officer.”

“That is not what I was thanking you for ma'am. I was thanking you for helping me to find who I really am again, and to let my true nature begin to surface again. I kinda lost myself the last year in prison.”

I nodded. We worked in silence for a bit and I pondered his words. Then she was free. He picked her up carefully. She moaned in pain, which was a welcome sound, because it was a sign she was still alive.

Once we carried her out of the building, we sound found a Medical Triage area and brought her there.

“You saved her life,” the medic said.

“Actually you saved two lives...,” the convict corrected, “... hers and mine.”

What a time to be on Pinastir, three Officers from SS Astraios having attended two ceremonies and some time for sightseeing before we were due to return home. We hired a small craft and were in the air when the volcano erupted. We immediately landed and Captain Bravin and myself left Captain Quar to fly above us pointing out any injured people who needed our help. After the first building which we had not been able to get any further than the ground floor due to the fires, we parted company and I headed towards another building and searched from top to bottom no one there. It was then that I spotted a burning shuttle with its cockpit partly in the water on the bank was someone sitting nursing her leg, I run up to her and immediately saw that it was Commodore Skinstad she asked me to check the pilot which I did only to find him dead. I returned to the Commodore and used my combadge to ask for her to be teleported to the medical centre for treatment. Joined once again by Captain Bravin and with help from Captain Quar we went back to the first building and were able to gain admission to the upper floors it was during our search that we come across Captain Shran and were trying to move the beams from off of her when we were jointed by LT Diavolo and between the three of us were finally able to move the beams. It was at this time that a shuttle joined us and we were able to get the Captain on to it with the LT at her side. We carried on searching but find no one else. We had just joined Captain Quar in our craft when a warning come out that we should clear the area as the volcano was about to blow again. As there was nothing more we could do we returned to our quarters.

The sounds of phaser fire and chaos could be heard as Kris' body camera began to record the scene around him as members of veracruz's Beta unit lead by Torgo exchanged fire with some escaped prisoners who were using wounded civilians and cadets as bargaining chips in their bid to get off world shot back. Kris made a hand signal and the team advanced both squads leapfrogging towards the small encampment the convicts had set up. Phaser fire cracked through the air and two sentries went down stunned with shots to center mass. "Nice shooting Ensign." said Kris looking to a vulcan who just nodded. "Simple geometry with some psychics and algebra thrown in" he said as a Prisoner with an ax let out a warcry and charged them both Kris met the man and disarmed him before shoving him towards the ensign with a push kick to the abdomen. The vulcan quickly applied a a neck pinch and the man crumpled in a heap. Kris then turned and moved into the encampment dropping one guard as he went for his stolen Phaser. The other pointed his at a young freshman and shouted "Put the weapon down or ill blow the <EXPLETIVE DELETED>'s head off Kris noticed a Klingon shadow lurking behind the man and lowered his weapon to the ground slowly his hands going to air "Easy now" he said as he spoke the man raised his weapon and pointed it at Kris. "Any last words feddie" came the gruff voice. "Torgo" came the reply "What's a Torgo?" the man asked confused before a bat'leth point was shoved into his throat and out the other end "That's a Torgo" said Kris as the dead man slumped to the ground and Torgo looked at the young cadet nodding just before another loud boom was heard along with panicked screams. 'WERE DONE HERE" kris shouted "Time to move on!" this was gonna be one long day.

UF Starfleet Chief of Staff Log
Commodore Cheryl Skinstad

I was being transported down by shuttle craft to Pinastri Colony for a meeting scheduled at 160507.1000. I had my PADD and was reading up on my notes when suddenly we were launched into a downward spiral towards the surface. The pilot wrestled with the controls. He mentioned something about a violent eruption but was too busy to give more detail. Despite a brave attempt, he was unable to stop the descent and hollered to me to brace for impact. We crashed near the sea and I managed to crawl, pulling myself by my arms, up onto a hill. I could hear there were distress calls from the surface. Something to do with a Volcano? I was unable to check if the pilot was alive as I realised that I had broken my leg, and I had some burns.

Suddenly I heard a voice and saw a familiar face. Captain Markus was asking me if I was all right. I told her I did not know if the pilot was alive and so she quickly went to check, but came back with the bad news that he had not survived. As I drifted in and out of consciousness I found myself in a Triage tent where Lt McKay was coordinating the recovery of injured, then being beamed to the Maxwell, where I became one of many being assessed for various injuries. LtComm SpiritWeaver quickly brought me up to speed on events as he instructed medical staff to various duties. I was treated by Ensign Carmona and once fit to leave the Maxwell I was transported back to the Durant.

I heard that prisoners had escaped from the ruins of former holding cells and began thinking that I may have to ask for Security escorts, until further notice, when attending future meetings.

By the great computer : what a disaster we sadly have to face ! Captains Markus, Bravin and I were staying in Pinastri to attend various ceremonies and meetings. We hired a craft to wander a bit, and see again the nice landscapes of the colony. A violent air wave blowed us suddently. Fighting with the craft commands, i succeeded to stabilize our course. We saw in a medium distance a big flame and smoke column, growing in the sky. We understood immediatly the old volcano awoke and some eruption happened. So, we headed as far as possible toward the dark and flaming cloud, to see if we can rescue some people from the disaster. A moment later, we saw an accidented shuttle at the seashore. We then landed aside the shuttle. Commodore Cheryl Skinstad was laying on the ground, badly injured. We brought her first assistance and called a medical team. After that, we resumed our flight tour above the accidented area, without discovering anybody else to help. We fortunately saw many rescuing teams at work ... As we were unable to help more, we went back to our quarters, with a sour taste in the mouth ... May the great computer assist and help Pinastri !

The mystery of the destruction of Pinastri Colony is ongoing! Last night, a joint Away Team from the USS Veracruz and the USS Maxwell discovered that the seismic stability network around the colony had been deliberately turned off by a subroutine that had been placed in a console in the seismic facility. The subroutine waited three days to execute the shutdown command, then attempted to erase itself and all traces of the command it sent. Luckily, the two ships have brilliant Engineering, Ops and Intel personnel, who were able to find it!

Tonight at 6 PM SLT, we will pick up with the Maxwell, who will attempt to trace the origin of the subroutine. Who left it in the console in the first place? How was it done? And what was the purpose in sabotaging the seismic network?

If you would like to participate, then come on over! Send me an IM, and I can teleport you. COs: participation of all UFS ships is eagerly solicited! Please get involved! You will get plenty to do in your own RP periods.

*** INCOMING PRIORITY MESSAGE ON SECURE CHANNEL TO ALL SHIPS AND ALL STATIONS ***

Contact has been lost with the Hanneman Colony in the Farn Sector. Any available ship is requested to investigate. No contact has been received from the Hanneman Colony in the past three days.

Hanneman Colony is a science outpost on Hanneman II. The Hanneman central star is a red dwarf. All attempts at contact have failed. Last known signal from the colony was nominal. The cause for the loss of communications is unknown at this time.

((This is part of the "Disaster at Pinastri" story arc. Any ship or station CO interested in following up on this and thus contributing to the Task Force, please contact Kinney Randt or Nora Gerhadsen for the particulars.))

First Officer's log Stardate 160513.7

Starfleet Command have lost contact with a scientific outpost there and needs investigating.
The Veracruz is already chasing a lead and likewise the Maxwell.
The Sheppard will thankfully be back out of her starting blocks soon, but for now, this one is going to be down to us. We are hamstrung, but en route.
It certainly beats sitting in orbit looking on with a certain amount of helplessness at the situation on Pinastri, to be doing something.

We'll have to leave a few behind for the moment.
The Captain is currently working with the Pinastri Crisis management team, so I'll be taking the ship out for now, with the hope she'l be joining us before we arrive.
Our Chief Medical Officer Dr Sheppard-Mckay and his team are still working with the Pinastri relief effort.
I won't wish to pull them from that, indeed I'm sure the good Dr wouldn't go if I told him to do so.
I know in his shoes I'd do exactly the same.

Engineering have found the core to be running a little hot since our extended high warp flight back to Pinastri when we received the initial Emergency recall. This delayed our departure whilst they locked down some plasma leakage in both nacelles, add that to the microfractures found in the hull following shaking the 'bird apart on that last flight, we're running at warp 5 as best speed right now with some running repairs to keep us "afloat"

We've relayed our course plot back to Tranquility so that the Captain can join us en route. That souped up Delta class Runabout will certainly catch up with us at this speed.

The USS Maxwell is headed to the Midgar system to chase down the SS Shiny Happy Journey, a Talaxian merchant vessel that was in the area from which the signal was sent that turned off the seismic stabilization network on Pinastri. It is one of five ships in the area at that time. Two were Starfleet vessels: the USS Jaipur, a Saber-class escort vessel, and the USS Karakoram. Three were merchant vessels. Apart from the Shiny Happy Journey, the other two were the Tetsuko Maru XVII, a Federation-registered heavy freighter headed for the Petengeren System in the Tauron Sector, and the KTS T'Kang'Ti, a Kereelian trading vessel bound for the Ixthannek System in the Nasari Sector.

We are headed to the Midgar system at high warp. Our hope is to overtake the Shiny Happy Journey before it reaches Midgar.

Other ships may be needed to chase down the T'Kang'Ti and the Tetsuko Maru XVII. Please contact Nora Gerhadsen or Kinney Randt if your ship can do it!

The Jaipur and the Karakoram are both headed back to Pinastri for inspection. Though it is highly unlikely that these vessels were in any way involved with the failure of the seismic stability network on Pinastri, a full inspection of each ship is needed.

Alert Status: Red

I was giving a lecture on intelligence at the academy when the earth quakes started I hurried the cadets to safety but when I did a head count were missing several from my section I went back in to the lecture hall and there was an after shock the roof came down on me. My combadge became damaged in the fall and I was crushed under a large metal beam. I called out for help but there was no one near, I tried to remain calm i knew someone would come for me eventually. I must have blacked out because when I woke a there were several rescue teams there to get me out when they lifted the beam off the pain was incredible. I was evacuated to a triage center and later to USS Protector for treatment and surgery.

Captain Azdra Portland-Nikolaidis reporting

My shuttle arrived back at the Thunderbird from Tranquility. I was accompanied by Lieutenant Blackheart and our new medical officer, Ensign Archi Merlin. After a few laughs, including Rebel running away and going into hiding (that's another story) I proceeded to make my way up to the bridge, assuming command from Chief Operations Officer Sytia Shran and Chief Engineer Tobias Wolf.

We attempted contact with the Hanneman Colony, receiving no word from them at all. I made the decision to take both Rebel and Genna down to the surface with me as part of an advanced away team. Once we were in orbit the three of us beamed down to the science outpost.

The transporter room in the outpost was a fiery mess. We managed to make our way around some of the flames and proceeded to do a complete sweep of the outpost building itself. We found no survivors but a lot of fire damage and destruction. I await word from Engiineering and Operations to see if there's anything we can pull off of the computer system from the outpost. We will continue to monitor to see if we can find any survivor life signs but at our current point in time I fear that there are none here.

Stardate 160523, Pinastri Sector

Reports are streaming in about encounters with the five vessels identified as potential culprits for the disaster at Pinastri. The USS Veracruz intercepted the KTS T'Kang'Ti and verified that they were not involved. The USS Maxwell encountered the SS Shiny Happy Journey, a Talaxian vessel, and while we did find contraband on board -- approximately 400 kg of Keflavin B2, a highly potent, controlled narcotic, we found no evidence of their involvement with the seismic stabilization network at Pinastri. We have returned to Pinastri and disgorged our prisoners, having left the Shiny Happy Journey derelict in deep space. A recovery team will go and pick it up. Minus the contraband, of course -- that was destroyed.

The USS Karakoram and USS Jaipur, in the meantime, returned to Pinastri and have both been inspected. No trace of involvement was found in interviews with the crew and in their computer logs.

By process of elimination, that leaves the heavy freighter Tetsuko Maru XVII as our only remaining suspect, barring something unforeseen (such as, perhaps, a cloaked ship in the vicinity). The USS Veracruz and USS Sheppard are on their way to intercept. The Veracruz is heading from their rendezvous point with the T'Kang'Ti, so the two ships will be coming from different directions on their way to the Petengeren System in the Tauron Sector. This is the destination in the Tetsuko Maru's filed flight plan.

There has been no contact with the freighter despite many attempts. This may not be that much of a surprise -- their comm system could be rather outdated.

In the meantime, USS Thunderbird has reported that the Hanneman colony was indeed attacked and destroyed. They are searching the area for evidence of the attacker. In the meantime, USS Durant has set off for deep space to monitor communications traffic. USS Protector, meanwhile, is still getting their systems up to speed so that they can launch to support the search. It seems highly likely that the attack at Hanneman is related to the attack at Pinastri. Given the distance between the two colonies, this might indicate more than one attacker. Other ships, including the Jaipur and the Karakoram, are heading to the Farn Sector and the Tauron Sector in support of these operations.
