MISSION 220916 - The Mines of Malgash

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

Executive Officer’s Log - Stardate 220916

The crew of the USS Armstrong continued to deal with the fallout of responding to the Talis' request to assist in ending the "holy crusade" intended by the Zsche faction of the Yadhi that would have seen them attempting to bring their beliefs to other systems in the sector by force.

Our Chief Intel Officer, Ensign Kassiquandrii Resident, ran a complete analysis of the information we gathered and expressed her concerns. In Starfleet terms, other than acquiring some advanced weapons from a source still unknown, the armada of Zsche ships was about as dangerous as "a bathtub full of rubber ducks" [[Private log: look up what bathtubs and rubber ducks are]] Ensign Kassi was concerned that the Kajj must have something else up his sleeve than orbital bombardment or attempting to land with his tiny force to fight a war.

An away team beamed back to the Treman ship "Fist of the Spirit" for a more detailed search of what might be on board. As the "Fist" was the Zsche flagship, this seemed the most likely place that any unexpected weapons would be installed.

Upon arriving on the derelict ship, the team began to explore and soon discovered a device - a cube a little over a meter in each dimension, that was not part of the ship's standard equipment. After running some initial sensor scans, Chief Science Officer Commander Roffo, revealed that his best guess was that this was a bioreactor - a system for cultivating biological material securely and often used to study viruses. As Zsche appear to have no interest in science, he was very concerned about the contents, but the device's internal shielding was blocking scans.

As the device had a active display reminiscent of a countdown timer but rendered in a script that the computer was unable to translate, the XO decided to beam it into space for reasons of safety. Once the bioreactor was clear of the ship, the XO ordered Chief Barbosa to attempt to pierce the casing to retrieve a sample, and this was successful. The sample was placed in secure storage for analysis but Doctor Markus.

Ensign T'Mari had been assigned to penetrate the Fist of the Spirit's computer systems to retrieve any valuable information and was highly successful, managing to get complete access to the core and transfer the data to the Armstrong.

Once the science team and Doctor Markus were satisfied they had all the data from the bioreactor, XO Maven ordered it destroyed with phaser fire to ensure it would not be a risk to a casual traveler who happened across it.

A search of the cargo bay revealed a collection of weapons system components, all of non-Treman and non-Yadhi manufacture, the most surprising of which was a quantum pulse initiator. When compared against computer records, the initiator was an exact match for the ones used in the giant energy cannon on Zanduk - a device with sufficient power and range to cause serious concern.

The away team returned to the Armstrong, and the Fist of the Spirit was taken in tow, for return to Treman

Executive Officer's Log: 220918

The Intel gathered from the Zsche crew held in the bridge was that the original crew of the Treman ship "Fist of the Spirit" had been transferred to the Dilithium mine on Malgash IV. Captain Soulstar ordered the USS Armstrong to set course for the system at maximum cruising speed.

Captain Soulstar did not want to be encumbered with the towed ship while addressing the retrieval of the Treman crew, so asked for suggestions on how to conceal the ship to avoid discovery by the Zsche or other forces. The science team scanned the area and discovered a cloud of nebular gases of sufficient concentration to blind sensors except at a very short range. Captain Soulstar ordered the Amstrong to enter the cloud, and the Treman ship was dropped off at the center, with a Class VI probe acting as a locator beacon.

The Armstrong then set course for the mining planet - Malgash IV - and dropped out of warp well clear of the planet so a full set of sensor scans could be initiated. The discovery of the quantum initiator in the cargo of the Treman ship led the Captain to believe that another enormous space gun could be protecting Malgash IV and that it would overwhelm the Armstrong's shields. Scans revealed no such device as being present, and the Armstrong was able to enter geostationary orbit over the mine.

An away team beamed down. The XO was left on board to monitor the team's progress, and Captain Soulstar was in command, splitting into intelligence gathering and security elements. The team came under fire almost at once as they entered the mine. Scans were of limited use due to the high concentration of Dilithium ore in the rock strata. Chief Dolfke and Cadet Underall returned fire and neutralized the attackers with no casualties on the Stafleet team.

The away team continued to explore the mine, meeting minimal resistance. A holding area was discovered, with a single male humanoid locked in a cell. The prisoner was in poor physical condition and explained he was the last member of the original Treman crew - that the others had been worked to death in the mines. Dr Cattaneo provided medical care to stabilize the crewman, and the away team transported back to the Armstrong.
