Mission 220220

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

After we had transmitted the reset code to the Asteroid launcher, there was a pause of activity. Then, the unit continued to launch asteroids at the planet.

Dr. Kavorkian mentioned that his team had also found a control center for this machine, but could not figure out how to use it. We prepared an away team and transported to the control room. We had 14 days left before the first rock would hit the planet.

Arriving at the control room, we were met by the most puzzling sight we had ever seen. There were no consoles but just collums of mineral spires that put out a humming type of sound. The sound changed harmonics as we wandered around them. Our Science Officer determined that these harmonics were composed of binary code, as if they were conversing with each other.

A thought came to mind that we, in our own engineering department, also had a crystal that could both communicate with us and with other crystals. Its name was Varsh. We transported our crystal friend into the control room and it immediately began to converse with the crystal columns in the facility.

It turns out that the launching machine had a collaborating machine that would capture the asteroids and re-direct them into the Iconian Gateway. We had not seen this other machine before but scans now showed that it was there, waiting for the first asteroid to arrive. It must have been the reset code that caused it to appear.

Varsh informed us that these two machines were part of a mining operation. As a new batch of raw materials was needed, the launcher would sent the appropriate rocks with the necessary minerals at the "catcher". The catcher would then send them into the Iconian Gateway.

We asked, what were they supplying that it required so much mineral mass? The answer was astounding. There was a Dyson Ring being constructed in one of the galactic arms, beyond the Gamma Quadrant limits.

Through Varsh, we requested that the launcher send a different shipment. We said the Dyson project now required Trilithium. In another galaxy. The launcher agreed and went on its trip to the other galaxy. We figured we'd never see that machine again since it would take it over a million years to arrive at the new destination.

I'd asked Varsh if he'd like to spend a few days in this control room, conversing with the crystalline colums. He indicated that that would be wonderful, so we told him we'd stay in orbit for at least 2 more days.
