110925 - USS Faithful Mission - "Curveball"

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

It is with great concern I receive the reports from USS Argonaut with regard to their findings. They followed an unidentified warp signature from the KP442 system to an unknown planet. It may be possible they came across a world housing a small force of rogue Jem'Hadar or other Dominion-related species. Their visit was uneventful, however. A Federation starship approached the system, sent a shuttle to the planet, and explored without interference. I will dispatch a report to Starfleet Command and ask Intelligence to conduct surveillance of the planet to assess the situation further. In the meantime, USS Argonaut is to continue its investigation of the two additional unfamiliar warp signatures.

Here in Astraios, we have discovered an odd signal emanating from deep space. The coordinates are difficult to pin down at this distance, but it seems possible that signal originates from the same area that engendered the ion storm we experienced in March. There is no message in the signal. It’s simply a pattern of sound, one that seems artificial because of its repetitive nature. I have ordered USS Faithful to proceed at all possible speed to check it out. It could be nothing. Still…

Log entry:

After a travel of 2 days from Astraios, we approached at slow speed from approximate origin of the odd signal. We suddenly found significant abnormalities in the gravity system of the ship. What was our astonishment to see that we were gradually drawn into a black/worm hole emerging from the depths of space! However, it did not exist a moment before. We have listed it in our astral database under the reference X99 (astral database form 2495). Our engineer, Mr. Tortle, used his experience to deliver maximum power to our engines, and we had to push them beyond their rated power for avoiding the black hole. God thanks, we managed to move away gradually from this gravity trap, without much damage or serious injuries (some hurts quickly treated by our Doctor Ensign Liz Mattice). Scientific analysis conducted by Scott Bernam determined that it could be an unstable and intermittent black hole. The ion storm could have been sucked into the hole from another galaxy and released near our system. The hypothesis is very plausible. A warning buoy was deployed.

On our way back, we passed near an unknown asteroid of average size (about 3 km in diameter). The signal source is no doubt on this asteroid we have identified and named the "Hole Guardian" (astral database form 2496). According to LT Alice Trebuk, it is possible that the signal is a warning of danger about the black hole. Is this asteroid unstable and intermittent like the black hole? Or is it stable part of our galaxy? Who set it in this place, when and why ? We do not know ...

I suggest a science vessel be sent on a fact-finding mission for studying the asteroid up more closely, and with great prudence in order to avoid this dangerous black hole if it is still in the same position ... (what we can't know precisely). We will need spatial suits to do it: no atmosphere on the asteroid and temperature under -150 °C!

On our way back to the Astraios Sector, glad to have escaped a great danger, and no doubt to have succeeded a bit in elucidating the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of some ships in this region...

We are aboard the runabout USS Faithful on route to find the source of a strange sound/signal emanating from near the centre of the galaxy. Studies of our scans confirmed that the signal was indeed just a pattern of sound, repetitive in nature, artificial in origin. After several days travel we found ourselves nearing the source.

Suddenly, the ship was caught up in a gravimetric field. We found ourselves being pulled into a Black Hole!

The crew worked hard to ensure that we were eventually able to pull ourselves free from the influence of the Black Hole - at the expense of the engines. We noted the position of the Black Hole and left a marker buoy to warn other space travelers of the danger.

Travelling away at impulse speed we encountered a small asteroid that proved to have the source of the transmission on its surface. We gathered as much data as we could for later analysis back on Astraios. It was considered that the transmission of the signal/sound from the asteroid may well be warning of the presence of the Black Hole. As such it was decided that we should leave transmitter where it was. As to who placed the transmitter there and when, is a matter for speculation.

Log entry:

Having travelled at maximum warp aboard the USS Faithful for the past 3 days, we finally arrived near to the point in space from where the strange sound/signal was emanating. We were cautious, since this was the same area from whence came the ion storm earlier this year.

Our caution was well founded, as we suddenly lost control of the ship. We found that we were being pulled into what appeared to be a Black Hole. Following the Captain's orders, Helm and Engineering worked together to regain control of the ship and steer a course away from the Black Hole. The engines finally managed to give us enough power to break free of the massive gravity field.

We noted that the Black Hole was not on our navigation charts. We therefore took coordinates of our position and launched a warning marker buoy.

We proceeded at impulse speed in order to give time for the engines to recover. In so doing we came across a small asteroid, that appeared to be the source of the transmission of the signal. It was decided to leave the asteroid and whatever was on its surface alone in case it was simply a navigation warning of the Black Hole. We therefore noted the coordinates of the asteroid and finally headed back to the Astraios Sector at warp speed.

I am pleased to report that the crew suffered no ill effects from the mission.

The USS Faithful was sent to investigate an unknown signal. Due to inappropriate long range sensor settings we were almost sucked in a Black Hole that suddenly appeared at the rear of the Ship. We only escaped by transferring all energy to the engines, and almost burned out during the escape attempt.

I recalibrated the long range sensors to avoid such a situation in the future, the Black Hole seemed to have another Radiation frequency than normal, so our scanners did not recognize it.

Science found the origin of the signal, a nearby Asteroid, maybe it is just a signal to warn travelers about the black hole. But it did not work out for us, as we were attracted to it in our attempt to investigate the signal. We took some recordings of the signal, and headed home. It will take us some days again.

I looked over my shoulders to that Asteroid when going to Warp, not feeling she had revealed all her secrets to us ...

We were enroute in the USS Faithful to investigate a strange signal which was detected in deep space, upon arrival we were attempting to locate the signal when a singularity was discovered to the aft of our runabout. It was a close thing, we seemed to be caught in some kind of magnetic pull towards what we were by now certain was a black hole. Luckily the pull had not got a firm grip on the USS Faithful or I may not be writing this report today. However, it took all the runabout had and then some to break free of the singularity and avoid being crushed and our mass added to its own.

Science determined that the signal was located on a nearby asteroid, it is thought it may have been a warning signal, if it was, it was poorly placed... another scenario has just crossed my mind however... what if this signal was placed their intentionally? We left a warning buoy of our own as we limped back towards home. The USS Faithful performed way beyond expectations, although the engines will need attention and some repairs made to the aft hull when we get back to base, the wee runabout held together long enough for us to escape.
