110731 - USS Faithful mission - "Jammed Connections"

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

Sector Commander's Log
Stardate 110731
SS Astraios
================

Astraios Colonial HQ along with SS Astraios Operations have reported receiving odd signals from a communications array in the outer region of the sector. ComA X27 was put in place by the Astraios Civilian Authority at the end of hostilities with the Tremans in early 2379. We checked the array over when we arrived and all was operational. I have asked Engineering to take our runabout and a small team to investigate the current issue.

Log entry:

SS Astraios experienced problems with communications array ComA X27 in the far end of the sector. Communication was strangely scrambled, and we were assigned to take runabout USS Faithful and go check what was going on and hopefully fix it. With 5 minutes to destination we could do some testing, and indeed we caught mystical messages coming from ComA X27. The signal was unreadable so we had to find a way to decode it. With the combined skills of Science and Engineering we succeeded in decoding glimpses of the messages. It sounded like a trader who was trying to trade illegal merchandise like brandy, bargain and something about Venusian affairs and such in trade for gold. Not exactly legal stuff! Since the trade was against Federation rules and we had not solved the puzzle about the scrambled signals I refused his offer.

As we arrived at our destination we detected an unknown vessel which seemed to be the alien trader's vessel. The trader, now glued to the communication relay, was very insistant and demanded that we trade for his merchandise - which I of course could not do under any circumstance. At some point warning shots were fired at us, so we went to yellow alert. When we still refused to trade he threatened to kill us and we went on red alert. I warned him against threatening us, but he kept going on, so I ordered phasers to fire on him to get him off the relay and to a safe distance, and then a photon torpedo to kill in defense. With two torpedos we disintegrated him.

After the episode we checked the communication protocol for ComA X27, and the line was clear now. We never understood what this trader was so strange and why he was so insisting and threatening. I hope there are not more of his kind in our sector, we may never be certain what could happen if they should plan a revenge maneuver.

We returned to Astraios safely.

Log entry:

We took the runabout up to check a communications array and explore what was jamming signals.

Reaching the ComA X27 relay we noticed a small alien vessel near it. Computer tried to decrypt badly formated messages send by them through our com relay. They were using an alien imput device badly set to work with our equipment. After a few adjustments, we succeeded to understand: the alien was offering some illegal merchandise (vulcan brandy, venusian tobaco and also girls) in exchange for some gold. The captain was in an awkward position because the alien seemed not to be physically dangerous, but obviously infringing on Starfleet rules, and blocking all the Astraios communications with his bad communication equipment. Captain answered we did not want to trade and gave him the order to release communications. He did not obey and insisted, saying we could do good bargains with him. An ultimatum was send to him in accordance with Starfleet procedures, and finaly we had to shoot torpedoes on the alien vessel. This one was destroyed without leaving any remains.

Log entry:

The mission began with a message to be part of an away team aboard Runabout USS Faithful to investigate the jammed communication from the Astraios Civilian Authority's communication array Com A X27 in the outer region of the Sector.

The Runabout set course from the colony and arrived at the communications array to find that there was a strange spaceship docked with the array. The ship's computer was set the task of trying to understand what the message (if it was a message) from the array was telling us. What finally came through to us was a great surprise, it was a Trader using the array to try to sell his wares to the planet below for gold.

Captain Balut tried to tell the Trader that he should not be using the array in this manner; that as Starfeet officers we could not trade with him; and that he should leave the Sector.

At this point the alien became enraged with us and told us we could either trade with him or die, he was asked again by Captain Balut to leave the Sector or he would be fired apon. The alien then started firing at us and Captain Balut ordered phaser fire to get him to leave the array. When he broke loose of the array and started to come towards us we fired more phasers followed by a photon torpedo which hit the aliens ship and destroyed it.

We then returned to the colony with communications clear again.

Mission Log, Addendum:

A crew (comprising Lt. j.g. Astro Balut [as Captain], Lt. Cmdr. Karl Quar and Ensign Genny7 Markus) was assembled and given the task of taking a runabout to check a communications array, placed at the border of the sector by the Astraios Civil Authority, because something was jamming the signal.

On nearing the array, ComAx27, strange signals were first picked up by the crew on the runabout. Then an unidentified ship was located in the vicinity of the array. The ship appeared to be the source of the signals , which initially could not be understood. Suspecting that the ship may be trying to communicate with them, the crew used the translator and confirmed this to be the case.

The crew soon discovered that they were dealing with an alien, who was using the array for his own benefit as a rogue trader. The alien's only interest was to trade by offering desirable commodities in exchange for gold. When confronted about the unauthorised use of the array, the alien became increasingly hostile. Matters escalated to the point where shots were fired, leading to the destruction of the alien's ship.

The crew returned safely to Astraios in the runabout, leaving the array in perfect working order.
