110710 "Operation Death Embassy"

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

A distress signal has been received today from Condor, the unarmed craft that carried Ambassador Utu dam Kotosklo to Xerx'esh IV to open peaceful diplomatic relations with the Xerx following our encounter with their emissary here at Astraios. The distress signal from Captain Gerard of Condor is highly disturbing. Signal reads:

Mayday Mayday Mayday.
Unarmed Federation science vessel on diplomatic mission under heavy attack from Xerx with unknown weaponry. Casualties on all decks. Warp and impulse drives crippled. Shields down. Transporters inoperable. Hull is breached on 2 levels. This ship will not survive another hit. Ambassador Kotosklo in making her way to our only intact survival pod. The bridge is filled with smoke and many bridge officers are dead or wounded. Enemy self-identified: Xerx'esh Prime—has given no response to our offer of surrender. Condor or her intact remnant will transmit subspace blips every 4 minutes in line with BTLPROTOCOL: 36/Survtrans-13a to mark whereabouts.

ENDS<

After just two blips, no further signals from Condor have been detected. USS Condor with a full crew and diplomatic emissaries is missing presumed destroyed. We do not know if the ambassador escaped in her pod. We are refitting Argonaut with additional weaponry for a rescue mission. Astraios has been placed on full combat readiness, DEFSTAT2 with 24hr combat-level monitoring of the Iconian Gateway.

Medical Addendum

Species Profile : Xirx
Alia Soulstar
Chief Medical, Astraios Colony
Stardate 110712

Priority High

The following profile was made by medical personnel based on a detailed clinical examination of a co-operative specimen of this exotic species. While much of the information contained in this report will be accurate and valuable, there is a caveat attached to this report. Namely, prior to making contact with Starfleet, the individual in question came into contact with the WorkBee artefact (presently moored off Astraios) that was found in uncharted space. Our own engineers and security details were "repaired" after making contact with this craft. Comparisons of their psychological profiles before and after contact revealed that as well as physical repair to their bodies, all of their aggressive, risk-taking and mild pathological tendencies had been erased. As a level of aggression is required in a security officer, individuals from that discipline have been reassigned to other groups. We must assume that our "friendly" Xirx was also affected, given the tragedy that befell the Condor's peaceful diplomatic mission when it entered Xirx space. Therefore the psychological results of our tests in particular are likely to be misleading.

XIRX PHYSIOLOGY

Xirx have evolved from simians and exhibit the same bilateral symmetry of most Federation species. Their single most striking feature is a carapace, an external silicon infused amalgam dermis—roughly two centimetres thick—that acts as a natural body armour. Within this carapace they are carbon-based biologicals with familiar metabolistic variations. Our normally configured scanners do not penetrate this layer. On first contact with this individual, our instruments read him as a silicate lifeform. This makes the Xirx very hard to detect with standard sensors. They exhibit the same readings as rocks/metals, albeit with unusual isotopic profiles. Analysis of DNA samples reveal that this carapace has been self-engineered by the species.

The carapace is extremely resistant to heat and projectiles. Our specimen agreed to testing where we exposed him to laser/phaser devices to determine his vulnerability threshold. He felt nothing until phasers were set on kill, at which point he expressed irritation. I will elaborate on this finding later in the document.

Xirx are tall, around 8ft, with a dorsal ridge that runs from the crown of the head to the mid-lower spine. They have large hands and feet with some webbing between joints. We were able to devise some ad hoc scanning equipment to examine the internal organs of our specimen. He had two hearts, an enlarged liver, very small stomach and few intestines. The Xirx appear to live mainly on polycrystalline carbohydrates in various forms—this one ate large amounts of chocolate, complaining at it's lack of concentrated sugar, but little else. There is only a rudimentary anus and they do not expel waste products. This also appears to be a benison of genetic engineering.

Our specimen described the females of his species as similar in most respects to the males aside from genital configuration and disposition. I have no reason to doubt him.

In summary, this is a species that started out on a simian evolutionary trajectory but altered its own biology to become more resilient.

XIRX PSYCHOLOGY

The psych profile for this specimen revealed a gentle co-operative individual. I doubt the verity of this as a species-wide trait, especially after his descriptions of Xirx society and the fate that befell Condor. But he was forthcoming with an explanation of Xirx culture and history and there is much to be gleaned from that.

XIRX CULTURE

(This information was volunteered by our specimen and has not been verified by independent sources).
The Xirx are a highly tribalised species. Individuals do not have a permanent name, rather, they take on the name of their rank. The rank can be determined by the colour of the kirtle that is worn about the waist. So the leader of the dominant Tribe (in their own language) will be named Xirx'esh Prime. His lieutenant is Xirx'esh Secondus and the next in command is Tertius, etc. Individuals in non-dominant tribes have names that relate to their district. This individual was named J'amesch Octus. When any member of a tribe perishes, all those of lesser rank ascend one spot and take a new name. They also inherit that individual's harem (females outnumber males by 7 to 1) and living quarters. The males do not "attach" romantically to the females and a rise in rank simply means a better quality harem. Females are assigned to a harem according to their physical attractiveness. Our specimen had no ideas about what the females thought of this, finding my questions amusing at this point.

Their genetic tampering appears to be based on the martial culture that has permeated their society for many millennia. Xirx consider warfare a "sport", albeit one that takes precedence over all else. They have made themselves, by tampering with their outer dermal layers, almost completely resilient to energy weapons and projectile weapons. In the spirit of sportsmanship however, they have left certain vulnerable points on their anatomy. These can only be penetrated by sword and only certain angles of penetration through the carapace can do any damage. This is why all Xirx wear swords. They carry energy weapons to deal with other species. Within Xirx culture there is constant warfare to establish culture-wide dominance. A Xirx will never go to battle alongside another Xirx hailing from a different tribe. That would be courting disaster.

In summary, a Xirx considers any species that cannot match it in warfare to be a pest species. Those that do have martial capability are a mortal enemy. They have no time for diplomacy or alliances. They make a formidable opponent that are very hard to kill. All in all a species that would be a very tough and unpredictable adversary. All caution should be taken in dealing with this species. Our specimen has returned to his home planet.
