110420 - Astraios BATTLE DRILL: "Rocks"

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

Returning from a charting mission of System FGC-5002997, the CO takes the helm and orders a nervous Dr Soulstar to take the centre seat. SS Condor skirts the Takaar Nebula. The ship detects an asteroid field. Course is set to avoid it... long range sensors pick up a vessel in the far distance.

While returning from a charting mission of System FGC-5002997, SS Condor skirts the Takaar Nebula. The ship detects an asteroid field. Course is set to avoid it...

Nothing unusual from the readings at first, things were going well. As we moved past the asteriod field scans picked up a slight fluctuation in the shields, cause was unknown at that time. At first the shields stabilised and the fluctuations thought to be temporary. There was a slight gravitational pull that we had to compensate for too. The ship changed trajectory to compenstate. Then as we did so the gravitation pull increased.

Then.. we entered an asteroid field, one which was very odd. We detected the asteroids moving in wierd patterns. Gravitation field increase 5 fold and power decreased. The asteroids were not just wandering in space, they were actually following us

The Asteroids were then found to be made up of crystals only found on living creatures, they had celluar structure too that
seemed to impact the field Each time we increased our shields, our energy was drained, they were attracted to it.

Then long range sensors picked up a vessel in the far distance of the asteriod field. Each time we tried to communicate with it our energy drained, and drained fast. After several attempts we decide to halt communication and try to leave as the asteriods were beginning to hit us. But we couldnt, everytime we did the rocks followed faster and drained our energy more.

We came to a full stop and decided to use a photon torpedo to lure the asteriods away.... the theory being that if they are attracted to
energy then they may follow it. It worked! The asteroids followed the first volly. However several more torpedoes were needed to lure the asteriods away quick enough so that we could move the shhip off at warp to a safe distance where by the asteriods did not follow us.

We took a sample of the rocks crushed against our hull to analyse at a later date, logging the location and energy readings in the computer for future reference.

Returning from a charting mission of System FGC-5002997, I decided to relax a little and take the Helm, ordering Ensign Alia Soulstar to take the conn.

System FGC-5002997 is on the far side of the Takaar Nebula. We set course to ensure we would be at a safe distance and avoid any system malfunctions on the trip home. We encountered an asteroid field while experiencing increased gravitational pull from the nebula. The asteroids had a strange character, they followed the ship. Science reported they contained crystaline forms that mimic living creatures. Speculated they were lifeforms, an undiscovered form of mineral life. They seemed attracted to our movements and the energy emmisions from our shields.

Set course to leave the area when an alien vessel was detected. A transmission was received, numerical in a sequence of three. Identified a Berretero mining vessel, possibly mining the energy of the asteroids. Used ice shields, low energy consumption. Our shield power dropped quickly when we opened a channel. Mining vessel responded bluntly. We came to a full stop and asteroid activity changed.

Decided to fire a reconfigured torpedo into the nebula in the hope it would attract the asteroid beings. It worked. However they also began to follow the vapour trail back to the ship. We went from full stop to Warp 4 in a Beta-Gamma trajectory to avoid them. We kept firing torpedoes to attract them away from us. We were successful in escaping them.

The civilian scientists aboard were very excited about the asteroids. Samples were taken from the hull and further investigation of these strange new lifeform is warranted.

While I was holding the conn, our vessel encountered an asteroid field that exhibited odd behaviour. There were gravitational anomalies in the field and odd organic crystal structures in the rocks themselves, which appeared to be attracted to the energy emissions of the ship. We hailed what appeared to be a Berretero mining vessel across the asteroid field but could elicit no information from them.

Closing down non-critical onboard systems to minimise our energy signature led to a marked decrease in our attraction to the rocks. At the suggestion of the civilian scientists onboard we detonated a torpedo some distance from the ship, and many of the asteroids moved toward the explosion. Seeing that the bulk were travelling back toward us down the vapour trail, I ordered a random torpedo pattern into the field as we warped to safety.

Samples of the asteroids have been recovered for further study.

Aboard the SS Condor we were on the way home from a mission. As we passed the Takaar Nebula an increased gravitational pull on the ship was detected. Some astroids seemed to follow us, and the gravity pull increased simultaneously. Shields were raised and energy added to increase their strength. The asteroids were consuming our power, and the more power we used the stronger their gravitational pull became. A Berretero Vessel approached, and we tried to communicate with it. However our energy levels were fluctuating and unstable. We went to full stop to avoid feeding the asteroid beings with more power. A torpedo was fired beyond the asteroids in the hope they would take course and follow it, away from us. The torpedo had the right effect, but not enough so we fired a number of torpedoes and went to warp speed. We got away and returned healthy to home base.

While returning from a charting mission of System FGC-5002997, SS Condor skirts the Takaar Nebula. The ship detects an asteroid field. Course is set to avoid it. We suffered a gravitational pull at first, and set the shields to protect the ship. We discovered that the asteroids were in fact chasing the ship and the higher the energy was used, the faster they moved towards us.

A mining vessel was found in the area, possibly the owner or "shepherd" of the asteroids. I suspected they used the asteroids to gather energy from space. After our attempts at communicating with the vessel failed we found ourselves covered by asteroids. I scanned the asteroids to find they were living organisms built of a carbon molecular structure. Ensign Astro Balut suggested they fed on our usage of energy. Civilian Scientist Scott Knowles suggested shooting a torpedo to make the asteroids follow the energy explosion.

It worked at first but the asteroids returned to us after the explosion. Acting Captain Alia Soulstar gave orders to get the ship out of the nebula at warp factor 4, the asteroids still followed us. As a last option Captain Soulstar ordered various torpedos shot at random directions, which enabled the ship to escape with mild damage.

We took a sample of the rocks crushed against our hull to study them. As for now, further research shows traces of Zinc and copper crystalized inside the carbon molecules, I suspect their strange formation makes them a formidable form of a "battery", capable of energy storage.
