MISSION 220930 Stop! And We'll Shoot

Starfleet re-established its first Colony in the Gamma Quadrant on Astraios Prime on stardate 110111. SS Astraios is a space-station in high orbit above the planet Astraios Prime, to help with its protection and provide a base for the local fleet. UFS Astraios Colony and SS Astraios are tasked with the mission of ‘broadening horizons’ within the Gamma Quadrant, by exploring strange new worlds and seeking out new civilisations.

The opportunity for roleplay Missions is enhanced by the ready availability of a wide variety of locations. As well as the space station SS Astraios and on board NPC ships, including our flagship the Galaxy-class USS Neil Armstrong, there are locations on Astraios Prime (both within the Colony’s many Starfleet regions and on the rest of the planet) and more, both on 3rd Rock Grid and other Grids via the Hypergrid.

In addition to role-play, UFS Astraios hosts a weekly Starfleet Boogie each Tuesday and various events throughout the year.

XO's Log - Stardate 220930

Having successfully returned the Talis, the Kajj, and the crews of the Zsche Armada at Jin Prime, the Armstrong set course for the Treman system to return the TreNG navigator, the only one of his crew remaining, along with our cargo of prisoners, to the Tremen Queen. It would be necessary to report on the actions of TreNG that would certainly make them outlaws.

While in transit, Armstrong detected numerous warp signatures. Although space is vast, it's not unheard of to detect the traces of other ships, but it became concerning when it became apparent they were on an intercept course. Sensor data was fragmentary. We determined that based on tonnage, it was likely to be two medium cruisers and a larger vessel. The other vessels appeared to be utilizing sensor jamming technology as we could not determine their exact configuration. Considering they were traveling at warp nine, this led the Captain to think they were both advanced and that three of them would outgun the Armstrong, leaving us limited options.

The Armstrong and the three unidentified ships continued to converge on the same point, and we were unsurprised when we were hailed and told that we were criminals and should drop out of warp and make no attempt to defend ourselves. Captain Soulstar requested information, but none was forthcoming.

The Captain decided that the risk to the crew and ship was extreme, and our only course of action was to drop out of warp, set our course back to the SS Astraios, and engage full emergency speed of warp nine. The Captain believed that by the time they had detected the course change and compensated, we would be able to reach the relative safety of Astraios's satellite defense system.

The Captain contacted Astraios to advise them of our situation, warning them that so far, no shots had been fired by either side but that it was possible the Armstrong would be attacked.

Armstrong was able to stay several minutes ahead of the other ships and dropped out of warp, immediately going to full impulse to position us within the engagement range of the satellite systems. As the other ships got closer, Astraios could lock on with passive sensors to provide targeting data to the satellites.

The three vessels, now identifiable as two medium cruisers and a heavy cruiser of unknown design and still masking our ability to see them visually, dropped out of warp and immediately targeted the Armstrong and opened fire with beam weapons.

In response, Satellites 5 and 6 of the defense array returned fire with quantum torpedos, launching six at each of the medium cruisers while Armstrong engaged the heavy cruisers with phasers. The medium cruisers continued to target Armstrong. The quantum torpedo strikes were effective, causing the medium cruisers' shields to deteriorate. Their attempts to maneuver were ineffective; they were well within the 10M km engagement range of the satellites. Further torpedos were launched, resulting in target one being destroyed by torpedos already launched, and experiencing enough internal damage that its warp core breached.

The satellites retargeted, engaging the two remaining cruisers, adding to Armstrong's fire. The second medium cruiser attempted to ram the Armstrong at full impulse. The satellites shifted fire to cruiser two, and the quantum torpedo hits resulted in the ship breaking apart and largely being vaporized when the remaining reactant encountered normal matter.

The heavy cruiser was down to 22% shields and its fire sporadic, indicating loss of crew or key engineering systems. It broke off the fight, leaking warp plasma as it achieved warp seven on a course to intersect the Takaar nebula.

Armstrong experienced only minor damage. Captain Soulstar advised Astraios we were setting off in pursuit as this attack could not be unchallenged
