TDRP2229: "Search and Rescue Mission" (220806)

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We are para-RPers and storytellers. Using live, in-the-moment chat, we listen, read, respond, and create a new story as a collective of writers jamming on a theme. We are given a context – a place to begin and then improvise together what happens next, and what happens after that… and where does that take us.
That sense of being in fellowship with other creative people who understand the overall context and environment while writing a story that is vibrant and alive creates a sense of enjoyment and togetherness. Our goal on Durant is to foster that sense of belonging, to embrace good RP etiquette, and to have tons of fun!

SITREP:
The Durant is on a charting and exploration assignment in Sector 009D, a partially explored area of space. The Hemmer shuttlcraft was taken out for a test flight after completion of needed repairs. A highly radioactive ion storm enveloped the ship and they could not find the shuttlecraft on sensors. It seemed to have disappeared. On the Hemmer shuttlecraft the shuttle crew was thinking the same thing about the Durant. It seemed to have disappeared.

Currently, the ion storm has subsided and moved on. However, it damaged the Durant leaving her with most of the ships systems offline and in need of repair. The shuttlecrafts in the shuttle bay did not sustain damage from the ion storm, so one of the shuttlecrafts could be used to search for the missing Hemmer shuttlecraft crew. Lieutenant Colonel Elsa Mitchell and Lt. Sandra Lacrima volunteered to go out on the La Forge shuttlecraft on a Search and Rescue Mission to find the missing crew members.

Meanwhile the Hemmer shuttlecraft crew had found refuge on a Class M planet that was similar to earth's Jurassic Period, with dinosaurs roaming the planet, but there were also cave men and women. The cave people seemed friendly but it was difficult communicating with them because the Universal Translator (UT) could not translate everything they said. The cave people's language consisted of words and most of the words were translated but their language also consisted of grunts and clicks of the tongue that were not translatable by the UT.

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Ahnee looks on as the Kumi tribesman Zark places leaves on one of the Strange Ones, the male. She moves closer and looks down. "What is that you have, Zark? Are you a healer in your tribe?" She kicks sand at Zark and says, "You are not a good hunter if you got lost and can't even find your Kumi tribe, so me no think you are a healer. So get away form that Strange one!" She kicks sand at him again, then looks to the female Strange Ones, "Can you no heal your own man?" Where did you come from? Have you seen Sagundi? Did Sagundi send you here to help us? Many have died in the Priki tribe... so many. Our tribe is small now. You Strange Ones must have powerful magic to live in the sky... can you help us? Heal our people... many are sick and dying. Come with us. We must go to the caves before darkness comes. Many creatures come out to hunt in the darkness."

Una looked at the strange ones cautiously, wondering if they are a sign from Sagundi . . . but if they were sent by him, why would he allow one of those he sent to be hurt? "This not right. Powerful they are, but one is injured? Why would Segundi allow his own to be hurt?"

Meela's ears prick up at Ahnee's suggestion that the strange ones may have powerful magic. She says to the strange one nearest to her, "You must come with us. We need to get to the caves before darkness comes, for safety from the many creatures who come out to hunt in the darkness. If we look after you, could you in return bring back any dead of ours? If not those, could you cure our sick as I, like many, have a child ill? I too am curious though like Una. If Sagundi sent you, why are some injured?"

Vrook grunts carefully, as he looks around, "... sign from Sagundi? Test for us..." he hears the roars of a beast nearby, "No matter... you come..." he says looking at the strange ones.

Krilk Strangers fall from heavens, maybe not of Sagundi? Maybe cast out by Sagundi? Evil!

Ruark listens to all that speak, "Yes Vrook, maybe this is a test for the Priki... the illness has been a test for the Priki me think, so Sagundi can see if we will still obey him and worship him." He looks up to the sky. "But why, great Sagundi, must you take so many Priki. This one do not understand, great Sagundi!" He hears some of the others saying we should head for the caves and he agrees, "Yes, we go now.. to the caves. Come, Strange Ones. You are weak, and the animals about are strong and fierce! Come with us." Just then they hear a loud roar.

Zark flinches as the strange blonde haired woman kicks sand at him. He was no lightweight weakling, and he wanted to take action, but his mother told him to never hit a woman, so he was confused at what he could do. Finally he took a double handful of sand and threw it playfully in her face. He placed a hand on the unconscious man's chest and felt it rising and falling, and the heart beating within it. Still alive, not healthy, but the medicinal leaves should be doing their job.

Selina Otsuka looks up at Ahnee, her hands still shielding Zark from coming too close to her crew and Torak. She tilts her head and stares nervously at the female with the wild blonde hair. Her grunts and gestures are a blur to Selina. Her head aches from the bump against the shuttle's wall, she can feel a swell growing there. Having learnt that Starfleet's translator is useless with what she is hearing, she stands up straight, brushes her jacket down and patting the sand off, hoping that she could herself seem taller than she is. Gesturing towards Torak then using her hands to describe that Torak is hurt and pointing to his bleeding head, Selina speaks slowly and calmly to the warrior with the big...club. "My friend...he is hurt. His head is...broken." Selina looks over to Carol, "Ensign, what's the diagnosis on Torak, he seems bad, are we going to lose him? Do you have any suggestions?" She then turns her attention back to the group before her, still wary of their actions and movements.

Carol Ellsworth was startled to see the men and women in front of her. She kept touching her hair in a nervous gesture and she had told herself hundreds of times to stop doing that as it could be seen as a threat. She couldn't identify the language, but she could understand their signs. The Lieutenant pointed to Torak and moved her hands. The wind was howling. She saw the natives talking to each other and looking around them. That sound they had heard was alarming and the ground was slightly shaking, she could feel the vibration under her feet. The woman, who seemed to be the leader, had spoken with strength in her voice but somehow it sounded worried, almost like a plea. One of them approached and touched his chest. He stood and turned to the Lieutenant. He seemed to be asking her to pick up Torak and follow them. She looked at the Lieutenant for approval and turned to the unconscious Torak while she asked for a diagnosis. She had a diagnosis for Torak now. She had switched to Science but her previous medical studies couldn't be more useful now that the doctor was still unconscious. She had access to Torak's medical records. He was apparently healthy although he had relatives with the Tuvan syndrome and that was worrying her. Truth is he not only had a brain injury and excessive radiation, he could have Tuvan syndrome which had worsened his condition. The disease was incurable but she didn't know much about it. Technology improves each day. She turned and whispered to the Lieutenant, "Apparently he has Tuvan syndrome, no motor functions and bone loss, that plus a cardiovascular deconditioning and the drugs aren't working. Maybe the doctor will induce a medical coma and see what they can do for him back in the ship" She bit her lip and thought, 'If they ever got back. They could think they were dead by now. Who would survive?'

Elsa Mitchell: "The ion storm has passed. I am checking long range sensors to find our lost shuttle. Keep a comm link on standby, Lieutenant. I am worried about Selina and our crewmates."

*Prologue: Sandra Lacrima entered the shuttle bay along with Lieutenant Colonel Mitchell and walked towards the small spacecraft with the French sounding name, "La Forge." "Hm, La Forge... should check the history records for that name, never heard of this person before, did you, Sir?" she said as they stepped into the shuttle and the door flap closed behind them.*

Lacrima sat at the control console of the shuttle that was rushing through space towards the last known position of the missing spacecraft. She was getting used to the navigation and operating systems again as she hadn't had to pilot a shuttle since she left Starfleet Academy. But after a couple of minutes she was back in the routines of flying this type of spacecraft. "It's like riding a bicycle - never unlearned," she murmured this old saying her Grandma used to say back in the days. She acknowledged the Colonel's order. "Aye, Sir - Com Link on standby, Sir! Fed the computer with the last known tracking of the "Hemmer" to calculate possible routes and narrow down the area to search in." while tapping on the screen. "I heard you volunteered for this rescue mission as well, Sir?"

Ahnee looked at the strange females talking to each other. She could not understand everything they said, but some words, yes, she understood. She looked at the one kneeling beside the male and said, "Yes... hurt... he hurt... Priki." She waved her hand around at her tribe members and then pointed to herself, then said again "Priki!! We... Priki.. come... click... grunt... grunt grunt... click... Come..." She looked to Vrook and said "These strange folk have some words like us... but much different. We must go, Vrook, to the caves... everyone." She then turned back to the fire haired female. "Come..." She brushed the sand out of her face and looked at Zark with narrowed eyes, thinking she will get him for that later.

Una began to move to the caves in order to prepare. As healer, it was her duty to help, even if she might fail. She already had one failure recently, which is why she stood apart from the others. Ever since the death of a husband, she followed tradition by acting as the outcast, subservient to the others.

Meela looks closely at Zark as she starts to move towards the caves. She watches what he is doing a little suspiciously. "Might the Sagundi have sent you Zark? You claim you are a hunter but you fell out of a tree. You claim you were lost. You are having more success at healing than these strange ones. Maybe these strange ones are a distraction while you perform your magic with leaves?" She looks to the others to see if any agree with her.

Vrook raises his hand and points at the newcomers, "Come... we go now.." He goes to the trees and begins pulling strong branches off the tree with all his might, ripping them off the tree. He throws them down as he walks over to some vines, and points, "We make, bring hurt with us..."

Krilk: "Krilk no trust strangers. Rejected by Sagundi!" he shouts, kicking the sand. "They make things worse for us. Lose more family with them. No trust!" he states glowering at his tribe mates. "Leave them feed animals, Sagundi be pleased them feed animals! Better as offering. Put them with other sacrifice."

Ruark looks to Krilk, hearing him say we should leave the Strange Ones, sacrifice them, letting the animals have them. He then looks to Vrook and says, "Noooo!!! We will help the Strange Ones and bring them with us! Ahnee is smart. Ahnee says they have strong magic and will stop the Priki from dying everyday. Me believe Sagundi sent them to help us... we must keep them safe! This is our test... We keep the Strange Ones safe... and they heal our people." He looked to Krilk and yelled, "KRILK!! You defy Vrook!? Our great one. Our Leader... and Protector of the tribe!" He looked angrily at Krilk and said "Vrook has fed this tribe with great hunts! You are not a great hunter... you should bow to Vrook, not defy him!"

Zark watched as the sky lady spoke to him in her strange language. Her speech flowed much better than his own, being much more pleasing to the ear than the tribal grunts and clicks. He would like to learn to speak in their tongue, to learn more about their medicine and their lives above the sky. She pointed to the man's head as she was speaking, and he repeated the words she said... "Hurt... broken." He heard Meela speaking to him and turned to reply. "Sagundi? Possibly he brought me here, caused me to fall out of tree, give away my position. Try to heal strange sky man with medicine leaves in medical kit. Zark get injured many times, need kit to stop bleeding and end headaches so bunny hunting can continue. No real magic here, just prepared for injuries."

Otsuka nods to Carol. "We'll need to stabilise Torak first, Ensign." Selina points to the medical kit that they've salvaged from the shuttle. "I hope that the EMH program is installed in that kit. Can you see if you can activate it and induce the medical coma? We need to keep Torak alive and get him back to Durant." Studying the grunts and clicks of the natives' language, she is reminded of some similarities of a very old Earth language... or dialect. Selina then picks up her translator, absentmindedly shakes it a bit, before directing it towards Ahnee. Then in between static and crackles, she seems to hear some familiar words in her grunts and clicks..."hurt...Priki...come...caves...hurt." Selina looks up to Zark, then to Ahnee. She speaks again, slowly, into the translator. "Yes... friend hurt... can you take us to shelter... to cave"? She bites her lip, then turns to Carol. "I hope this works..."

Ellsworth looks at the medical kit that Lieutenant Otsuka handed her. She followed the Lieutenant and the natives. After a long walk she stops, thinking 'that looked like a rock, but...' She comes closer and says aloud, "This is an egg." The cave people turn to look at her. It seems very natural for them to have those all scattered there. One of them moves his hand as if he was telling her to stay away from it. It seemed that Lieutenant Otsuka had found a way to communicate with them.

Mitchell: "Lieutenant Lacrima, easy does it. Flying is easy, landing is harder but I have heard crashing is very easy. I remember back in my days at the academy when I learned to fly, well it may or may not have been in a shuttle. We need to find our missing crewmates. I am picking up a distress signal coming from a class M planet sending the coordinates to you Lieutenant. Open a channel to Durant saying we might have found our shuttle."

Gwydion flies high above the forest, soaring on the thermal updrafts and compensating for the wind gusts. She is starting to get hungry, and she knows that she should fill up on food now. When the eggs hatch, she will have all she can do just keeping the hatchlings fed. There won't be much time for her to eat much. She looks down, scanning the ground for movement. There! Is that something moving on the beach? She drops down lower to get a better look.

Lacrima steered the La Forge through a nebula, the point where the original tracking ended. She smirked at the Colonel's remark. "You don't feel safe when I'm at the steering, Sir? Well, I could let you get out anytime, Sir! We passed a nice little asteroid a while ago," she replied with a cheeky grin. That's when she also heard the incoming signal right after they passed through the nebula. "Aah, that's the emergency transponder of the shuttle. If I remember right, it can only be activated manually, so that's a good sign, isn't it?" she said. While already programming the route towards the origin of the emergency signal, she accelerated the shuttle to its maximum speed. As Colonel Mitchell had ordered, she contacted Durant to inform them about the distress signal they received. "Well.. I'm not a Science Officer, but possibly this nebula blocked all signals from coming through, what do you think? Hopefully it wasn't the cause for the Hemmer's emergency beacon, she said, checking the controls for any alerts.

Ahnee looks to the dark haired female. "Med... kit... med? no..." she shakes her head and says, "Caves... yes... caves yes..." She points at the injured people. then says again, "Yes... they hurt... hurt. We take... we take. We go... we go to caves... home... home. Come." She turned to her people and said. "Ruark, Vrook. Krilk..." She sneers a little and says "Zark! Carry them! Bring them," and she starts to walk toward the caves. Growls from the animals nearby can be heard. She says "Hurry! We must go."

Una continued to make her way to the caves ahead of the others, remaining apart from them. Once she got there, she started to prepare what she needed to in order to try and heal the strange one, but was careful to keep an eye out for when the others would arrive.

Meela: On her way to the caves she hears words from one of the strange ones. She understands hurt, shelter and caves. She is pleased that there may be some understanding now between the strange ones and themselves. Maybe we can strike a bargain with them, she wonders, about healing our sick once we can speak to them properly.

Vrook pulled the vines off the tree and tied them around the branches, crossing the vines nice and tight to make sure that it could hold a body. Standing it up, he looks and gives it a grunt of approval, "Hmm... good," prepping it for the strange one. He brings it towards the people, bringing it over to help the wounded. "No time for medicine here..." he points at the wounded, "Let's go."

Krilk: "Even greatest hunter can be wrong," Krilk mumbles before submitting to the will of the rest of the tribe while still eying the interlopers suspiciously, ready to act if necessary. His unhappiness at the situation is painfully clear to all around him, as is his submission to the will of those around him.

Ruark looks at the Strange Ones and can understand that they have agreed to come to the caves. He then looks to Krilk and grunts loudly "UUMPH!!" Then says, "Yes, Vrook is our leader!" He nods at Krilk satisfied that Krilk has backed down and will not challenge Vrook. Vrook would win that fight, Ruark was sure. He looks to Ahnee, Una, Meela and the others and says, "We go! Yes!"

Zark listened to the sky lady as she spoke into her shiny device, which then emitted some words in cavespeak, "blah blah hurt, blah blah take to blah blah cave." He stood up and looked at her over the unconscious crewman. He pointed to the device in her hand, then stepped closer and held out his hand. "Zark may speak to device?" Maybe if he gave it some of his words, it could speak better, like the tribe. He was eager to hear more of the sky people's language that the sky lady spoke so well. And he began to worry as Ahnee urged everyone to move into the caves. The sky people appeared to be soft and defenseless, probably unable to protect themselves from the hungry predators in the area. He picked up his club and turned toward the growling in the jungle, placing himself between the sky lady and the danger. "Zark will protect. Zark can carry injured sky man to caves."

Otsuka nods quickly to Ahnee and Zark then looks to the others, studying each of their faces for a moment before moving to another, satisfied that she doesn't read any aggression on their faces, she nods to Zark and gestures to him to and the big dark skinned native to carry Torak. "Yes. Carry. Cave." Then she kneels to hold Torak in her arms. "Carefully. His head. He is hurt". Then she points to Linda, who is out cold from the crash, but as Carol has reported, not in any immediate danger. "This one too. Also careful." Selina looks over to Carol. "I believe that they want to help us, Ensign. Let's pick up the med kit and follow them... to their cave".

Ellsworth nods and picks up the med kit, following the Lieutenant, observing everything around her and scanning the area. They were some strange readings.

Mitchell: "Lieutenant Lacrima, send a message to the Hemmer asking if everyone is okay. I really hope that they are in one piece and no one is missing any limbs. I have seen it once that a young Ensign crashed and his face was cut up from the glass breaking out and his right eye was damaged. But wait, don't want to scare you Lieutenant, I am sure they all are just fine, So Lieutenant, how long before we reach the Hemmer?"

Gwydion scans the beach from a lower altitude, floating soundlessly on the wind. Yes, there is definitely food down there. She can see the ugly hairless apes, carrying their spears and clubs. That food could be a real danger to her. But there were others, with different skins, and not carrying weapons. She drops even lower. The food is all moving into a cave. If one of the new food creatures emerges from the cave, she might be able to dive down and catch it fast enough to avoid the clubs and spears of the old food creatures. She keeps her eyes trained on the cave mouth, waiting for the right moment...

Lacrima replied, "Estimated travel time to destination: twenty ni... Twenty eight! Minutes, Sir. And yes.. not the best story to tell right now, we'll just hope that everyone's fine. They must be! Selina's still got my earrings and I want them back." She chuckles, trying to ease the mood. She opened a com link and tried to call the shuttle. "USS Durant Shuttle La Forge calling Shuttle Hemmer!" Waiting for some serious seconds and repeated the message, preparing to send out an informative message of their arrival in case the Hemmer can receive but not reply.

Ahnee walks toward the caves, but turns around, hearing more animals noises around them. She then hears an unfamiliar sound. It is strange. She hears a noise coming from the strange object the Strange Ones were in. She walked back a bit and looked on. Then said loudly. "That object, that thing is talking!! This is powerful magic!" She moves closer, going back to the beach, to see what will happen and listen."

Una continued to remain distant from the others, doing her work in preparation for the strange one that was hurt. She knew that the tribe would not forgive her for failing Meela's husband . . . for allowing her to die, which is why she remained separate and outcast as was tribal custom.

Just as Ahnee spoke loudly, Meela also heard a voice from within the shiny box that the strange ones fell from the sky. She spun round in surprise. She knew it was unsafe to stay back on the beach for much longer, but inquisitiveness got the better of her. She too retraced her steps out of curiosity.

Vrook walks over to the beach and the injured man. He nods at the woman and screams, "Zark... help..." He walks over toward the wounded man and tries to move the man onto the gurney.

Krilk continues to eye the strangers warily as they go to the cave. His posture tenses every time one of the strangers gets closer to him and he clutches his spear more tightly but does not act without the permission of Vrook.

Ruark hears the animal noises getting closer and holds his spear tighter, looking round and ready to throw his spear if necessary. He will protect the tribe and the Strange Ones. He shakes his head as he sees Ahnee and Meela coming back to the beach. "No! He yelled. "We must go to the caves. Darkness has come. We must go!" He then looks to Vrook.

Zark gently picked up the injured sky man and walked toward the caves with the others. The man was not heavy, which made him wonder how they expected to survive among the predators here. He smiled at the sky lady even though she had not loaned him her shiny talking object. Maybe later.

Otsuka jumps, as her communicator lets out some static noises, then as clear as day, she hears Sandra's voice coming out of her badge "...static....Duran.....Forge...static...shuttle...static*..." Selina looks over to Carol in disbelief. "Did you hear that?" She holds up both hands to Ahnee. "It's alright... it's alright... it's our ship looking for us!" She tries to assure what seems to be the leader of the natives. Selina quickly taps on her badge. "This is Otsuka of Durant. Sandra? Is that you??" Turning to Carol... "Ensign, please head back to the shuttle, ensure that the transponder is on and is transmitting. Quickly! I'll stay with Linda and Torak."

Ellsworth saw a cave entrance. She didn't know where the passage would lead to, the cave was wide and beautiful. The area had some light, and the walls had a bluish colour product of light.but... She waited for her eyes to adjust to the light and still with the tricorder in her hand she scanned the area. It was reporting many signs. They were surrounded by animals of some sort, it seemed. She blinked a couple of times. It wasn't only the bluish colour on the walls, it was a blue light coming from outside but it wasn't just a light effect, it was radioactive metal. Something close contained radiation. She wondered how this would affect these people. It should be very close as it was lighting the place. Outside, the thunder had ceased but the wind was still howling. After walking some meters she saw a rudimental bed, some animal skin on rock, as a bed. The natives pointed to the bed, so they carried Torak and placed him there. She saw them point to other beds, it seemed the occupants had died, as some rocks were there in a monticle. She turned to the Lieutenant. "I think they have been ill. This place has radiation. Some on the walls in here and some coming from outside, we will need to scan the area again. I will check up on them to see if they are healthy. The other med kit is in the shuttle." She looks around. There was one of the natives that looked aggressive, he had been grunting a lot. She approaches two of the cave people and gathers her hands around the tricorder nodding her head, trying to make them trust the device... and her. She taps the screen and waits. The scan is complete, but before she can check it, she hears a noise. It comes from the shuttle. She nods as the Lieutenant tells her to go and check if the transmitter is working. She closes the tricorder. She can check the results when she comes back. One of the cavemen raises his hands and points to a stick. She's not going to feel protected with that! She nods, thanking him for the advice, and takes out her phaser. If the animal that lays giant eggs is out there, she would need much more than a stick. She starts walking to the entrance of the cave and one of the cavemen follows her. "I'll be right back, Lieutenant." She can see the shuttle, and a sudden pain invades her, "AAAAAAGHHHHHHHH!"

Mitchell: "I am sure you will get your earrings back Lieutenant, let's hope Selina is not missing an ear where you only get one. Joking, surely that is not the case. Well, she'd better be fine. I like her. Wait, pretend I never said that and please don't tell her." * blushes* Eyes open wide, screams "SELINA! Tell her we are on the way to save her, please, Lieutenant."

Gwydion sees a lone food creature emerging from the cave, walking away from her. She folds her wings, arrowing down at high speed. At the last moment, she spreads her wings wide, slowing down drastically. Her taloned feet grasp the creature on both sides and she rises, wings flapping furiously, straining with the increased weight. Tonight she would feast!

Lacrima cheered up as she heard Lieutenant Otsuka's voice and, after the Colonel beside her calmed down from the unexpected outburst of joy, replied "Hi Selina! Seems like I can't leave you alone for a single minute without you getting lost! So good to hear you! Colonel Mitchell and I will arrive at your coordinates in about 25 minutes. What is your and the other crew members' condition, is everyone fine so far?" And while waiting for a response, she opened a separate com link for the Colonel to contact Durant. "Guess this honor's yours, Sir!"
