TDRP2140-D: "What are ye orbs?" (210911) TF Gemini

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We are para-RPers and storytellers. Using live, in-the-moment chat, we listen, read, respond, and create a new story as a collective of writers jamming on a theme. We are given a context – a place to begin and then improvise together what happens next, and what happens after that… and where does that take us.
That sense of being in fellowship with other creative people who understand the overall context and environment while writing a story that is vibrant and alive creates a sense of enjoyment and togetherness. Our goal on Durant is to foster that sense of belonging, to embrace good RP etiquette, and to have tons of fun!

MISSION TDRP2140-D (Durant)
==============

STARDATE: 210911
CREW CALL TIME: 8:45am SLT Sharp

LOCATION TO MEET: Durant
RP STARTS: On the bridge.

WHAT TO WEAR:
UFS Duty Uniform
Durant Chat Relay

MISSION LEAD/GM: Capt Rieko

POST ORDER: Will be decided, and posted, by the Mission Leader just prior to mission start (and sometimes adjusted in the RP if necessary).

ARRIVING LATE? Ensure to enter the scene in a logical manner.
NEED TO LEAVE EARLY? Justify your exit.

PROPER ADDRESS: Our XO is addressed as Captain Rieko or XO or Exec. Our Chief Intel/SO is addressed as Captain Jordan. Our CO is addressed as Admiral or Admiral Toocool or Captain Toocool. Please don't use "Captain" without a surname as we won't know who you are addressing ;)

SITREP: A Task Force was established by Starfleet Command. The USS Taylorholic Durant was ordered to rendezvous with a Federation Shuttlecraft in Sector 001C (Parein) in order to receive new orders. The flagship was late for the meeting due to the unexpected appearance of unidentified orbs or spheres. Comms were jammed but the Shuttlecraft managed to get through a mayday. Durant was able to get close enough to transport the three crew members aboard despite detecting an increasing number of ... Borg vessels?

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Evelyn Rieko paced in front of her chair, then said, "Finally we will get to meet this VIP. Possibly someone with expertise concerning the Borg and this new type of Borg, the Bech.” She had been able to receive some transmissions with information stating there were now two types of Borg, The original Borg and now also the Bech. She had received this information from Starfleet before the communications were shut down. “It was a dangerous and frightening situation the VIP’s shuttlecraft found itself in. It was right in the middle of a battle between the Borg and Bech, but no way were we going to let them perish. Now we will get some answers and more information on what is going on here." She took a deep breath and then exhaled, "Lieutenant Bonj, keep us at station keeping for now but be ready to take us to coordinates 145 mark 8 at a moment's notice. Everyone report on your stations."

James Hode beamed aboard, nodding to Commander Russell Sprout, who was waiting there for him. He saw the look of surprise on the man's face, but just reached to shake his hand and said, 'best take me to the bridge, old man.' As they got into the turbo, Russ asked, 'how's the wife,' and Jim said: 'A handful. A beautiful handful.' They both chuckled. Then they were on deck one, and Jim strode up to the bridge entrance and paused. He knew his presence was unexpected. And he didn't think Evelyn would be too happy to know the reason he was there. He took a breath, and stepped through the door. Eyes swivelled to look at him. Russ followed right behind Jim and called out 'Captain on the Bridge' to announce Jim's presence. Then he stepped back into the turbo to return to his assigned place, with some regret as he would have liked to be on the Bridge to see what happened next.

Bruno Bonj scanned his eyes over the panels in front of him and then flicked his eyes back up to the view in front of him. "Understood, XO. They seem rather unaware of our presence at the moment, although I think we should prepare for a spot of bother once we do deploy. I'll keep activities to a minimum." He then began to carefully monitor all outward signals.

T'Pris: "Keeping sensors on the unknowns, Captain. So far they appear to be ignoring us and focusing on each other. Running their configuration through the database but so far no match," she reported as she heard the turbolift doors open and while her hands still flew over her keyboard her head turned to note the new arrival. It was no one she recognized. This must be the VIP, she mused to herself, noting it but turning her focus back to her station.

Hal Jordan scanned the nearby area from Tactical, trying to catalog every Borg vessel and determine what it was doing. "Sir, the orange versus green Borg Civil War continues, green vessels firing on orange vessels and vice versa. Our probe is accumulating data and I should have it correlated very soon." He heard Commander Sprout say 'Captain on the Bridge,' and turned to see who was being announced. Captain James T. Hode! He carefully suppressed any gesture of surprise, merely nodding at the man. "Welcome aboard, Captain, nice to see you again." He turned back to the Tactical board.

Zania Turner glances over her console and shares, "All systems are online at the moment, sir. I'm not detecting any unusual communications from the ship or other sources; however, there is some interference. I will continue to monitor and advise the moment that changes."

Narek Siva'nek: As I was finishing up reading a report, I turned to see the new person entering the bridge space with a confident stride. The VIP, a human, I noted. I have never seen this man before and penis my head in curiosity about this. The rest of my mind mulling over the orbs on the screen shooting at each other.

Rieko looked to Science. "Lieutenant T’Pris, keep scanning, and Captain Jordan, I would like the telemetry from the probe ASAP. She looked to Ops/Comms, "Thank you Admiral Turner. We won't attempt to communicate with the orange or green vessels until we get more information from the VIP, who should be here any minute.” She looked to the bridge door as she heard it open, and looked at the man coming out of it. One word filled her mind: What!? She blurted out "Jim! What are you doing here? "She looked past him to see the VIP, but no one was there. "You're the VIP? You're the expert on Borg? But then it was never stated the VIP is an expert. So, you're the person here to fill us in on what has been happening with the Borg Civil war. We lost all communication with Starfleet and the Federation for a while. We have been able to get transmissions intermittently now." Her mind raced with questions. "Captain Hode, it is a surprise to see you again, and a pleasure"

Hode stood awkwardly behind the Tactical II console, eyes scanning it, then lifting to look up to the viewscreen. His face looked a bit haggard and his look was unimpressed. He ran a gloved hand along the console, was he looking for dust? Moments passed as he seemed to examine the entire bridge, display by display. He squinted up at the ceiling, apparently bothered by the brightness of the light, or maybe disappointed in its appearance. Silence fell as he seemed to process the conversations. Perhaps it had been too long since he was on this bridge, or any bridge, given the fact he'd left his command and Starfleet in order to marry an alien queen. He cleared his throat, and finally his eyes lit on Evelyn, and he said roughly in his British accent, "Right, Captain Rieko, I carry new orders for Durant, which you may review at your leisure." He turned to the middle of the bridge and said, "Computer, transfer command functions of the USS Taylorholic Durant to Captain James T. Hode at this time index, authorization Alpha Two Six Bravo Eight Twelve Delta Five." The computer responded instantly, recognizing his voice and his code. =Command codes transferred to Captain James T. Hode stardate 210911.= Hode strode forward, between the Doctor and the comms console, and looked expectantly at Evelyn, who was standing in front of the Command chair. "By order of Starfleet Command I am taking over command of Durant for the duration of the Task Force. Our orders are simple, to contact the Bech and ensure they are victorious against the Borg." He addressed the bridge, "Status reports all stations, please state your name and designation, and your assignment, then your status."

Bonj: At the sound of 'Captain on the bridge', Bruno turned his head to observe the man in question. He had not seen him before. 'Captain James T. Hode' was heard. Bruno tilted his head and scratched his chin. He'd heard that before, usual gossip spread around in the bars after hours. The Captain who chose love over his crew... In a fluster, Bruno turned to the new Captain. "Er, I, Captain... I'm currently monitoring comms and sensors. We're getting a great deal of interruption. Probably the Borg up to their old tricks again, not to mention our proximity to the Nekrit Expanse. We'll need to find a way to get out of this jam, both the Borg and the Nekrit Expanse. It's a tricky one... I'll continue investigating our options!"

T'Pris blinked at the sudden turn of events and wondered at the swiftness of the change of circumstance. Obviously Command felt it was necessary though. "Lieutenant Commander T'Pris, Sciences. Scanning the unknown vessels. The Bech?" She hesitated slightly questioningly on the unfamiliar name then continued. "Running their configuration through the database. They are unknown so far."

Jordan glanced at Captain Hode momentarily. As he had thought, the man was wearing a Starfleet uniform without any pips. It was a Command uniform, too. Hode stepped forward and ordered the computer to transfer Durant command to him. Surprisingly, his order appeared to be successful. Hal decided not to question orders unless the man said or did something to put the ship at risk. At that time he would put the question to Captain Rieko. He responded to Hode's order. "Hal Jordan, Captain, Durant Chief Intelligence Officer, presently manning the Tactical station. Our probe has scanned the nearest collection of Borg vessels. The crew appears to be standard old style Borg, with implants as expected, presumably still part of a collective. I see no obvious difference between the orange and green vessels other than color. So far, none of them appear to have taken notice of Durant, but if they attack us simultaneously, we wouldn't stand a chance against their weapons."

Turner looks over at the individual who took command of Durant, trying to see if she could get a read off of him. At the same time, she responded, "Rear Admiral Zania Turner, Chief Ambassador, however I often assist with communications, operations, and other stations as needed, sir. At the moment, I am manning Communications and the alternate Ops station. Communications is online at the moment but there is interference. I'm not detecting any unusual readings, signals, or other forms of communications."

Siva'nek: Watching the man walk in and calmly take command of the bridge, hearing him announce his name and rank and numbers to the computer, a Captain James T. Hode, was someone before my time on Durant. I will bring up his information to review after I answer his command for my position on the ship. "Sir, Dr. Narek Siva'nek, Doctor for the Ship, monitoring the ship's environmentals and the health of the crew currently while we work through this situation, Sir. I will be determining the difference between the Bech and the Borg if given the chance, Sir."

Rieko: Anger boiled up inside of her as she heard Jim's cold tone giving the computer the command codes to transfer her ship to him and place him in command. That word in her mind 'WHAT!!!!!??' was so loud this time, she would not have been surprised if everyone on the bridge could actually hear it. Verbally she said, "This is unbelievable! Captain Hode... Jim! You are commandeering MY ship? I don't understand why. You are supposed to give me information about the Borg and the new evolved type of Borg. I was not informed you would take over my ship uh, Vice Admiral’s Toocool’s ship, but under my command. Let me read those orders! Please!!" she held out her hand and looked at Jim. He looked so cool.. no emotions, no apologetic explanations, and he was not wearing his pips. That was odd. He was a stickler for neatness, and especially with uniforms. That was not like him at all, and he looked at her like they were never friends, like he had never kissed her hands just before leaving Durant for good, she thought. She looked around at the bridge crew. Her crew, not his. "Lieutenant Commander T'Pris, continue monitoring."

Hode said in an exasperated tone, "It's quite simple. Orange orbs are the good guys, the Bech, the ones Starfleet wants us to support against the Borg. I take it we are alone here, the rest of the Fleet is otherwise engaged - I was out of contact due to the jamming signals in this location. Our intel states the Borg entered the Delta Quadrant from the Andromeda Galaxy, and their purpose is to assimilate, as usual. The Bech are former Borg who no longer assimilate organics and have agreed to fight with us against the Borg." He spoke quickly in a low voice. Anyone close to him might see the slight flutter of... was it nerves? That ran over his body as he spoke. Hardly surprising, if this was his first time back on a bridge in over a year. At Evelyn's enquiry, he blinked a moment, then fished in his pocket for the palm-sized PADD that carried the orders. He held it out to her. "Bit of a sticky wicket," he said. "Orders are orders." He turned to the nameless one on Helm, "Prepare a course to intercept the closest Bech ship. Captain Jordan, ensure shields and weapons are online, take us to Red Alert. Monitor the activity of the cubes." He turned to Comms... "ahhh... Rear Admiral Turner? See if you can break through the jamming and hail the Bech ship."

Bonj: "Er... Lieutenant Bruno Bonj, Operations, sir. Setting a course now... Woah... Captain, sensors are indicating that the shuttle has been... Absorbed by something. It's no longer registering at all! Looks like you were beamed up in the nick of time." He continued working with the scanners but alas, nothing. "If their jamming continues, we might find our warp engines are compromised. I'll get onto Engineering and continue looking for a viable course." Bruno didn't question the new Captain, although he did feel slightly uneasy about someone he'd never met simply walking onto the ship, taking command and changing everything. Whatever was going on, it was definitely dangerous.

“Aye, Captain." T'Pris said responding to Captain Reiko's order to continue monitoring and as the new Captain....Hode? Hadn't given her any other orders she continued doing so. "Captains, if I might suggest... if the Bech are previous Borg, perhaps they still use the Borg subspace network--their interlink node. If we could isolate that frequency we might be able to contact them."

Jordan listened as Evelyn protested against Hode's unannounced takeover of Durant. He would monitor the situation carefully. As Tactical Officer, he had resources and equipment at his disposal to enforce security protocols shipwide, and he had no qualms against using them against even a former Durant Commanding Officer if the safety of the ship were at stake. As he continued to scan nearby space, he silently used the ship's internal security sensors to scan Hode, especially looking for the presence of hidden Borg implants. There were some anomalies, and results were inconclusive. Looking at Evelyn, he said, "With your permission, Captain Rieko." He activated the Red Alert, hearing the klaxons respond as expected, and keyed in address Intercraft. "Red Alert, Red Alert, all decks man battle stations. This is not a drill."

Turner listened to the order that was given to her and nodded slightly, her fingers flying across the console as she immediately set to work. "Aye, sir. I'll see if I can come up with an alternative that will allow us to hail that ship." Hopefully she'd be able to come up with something soon since the Ops officer had already reported issues with communications.

Siva'nek: My Vulcan empathic sensitivities picked up the intense emotions in my Captain, ANGER, which gets easier for me to read her as time goes on, at being overridden as commander of Durant. He was less easy to read, and it felt to me partially blocked to an empath scan. Highly unusual was this transfer of command, it must be extremely important he take over so quickly without ceremony. And heading for the closest Bech ship? I prepare myself for perhaps an intense situation that could lead to sick bay being overwhelmed and send a message to the medical staff to be prepared in case, and also to scan him in detail for any Borg or other foreign materials in his body. I pull up his file and begin to read quickly about him and why he left Starfleet, my foot bouncing slightly with nervousness I usually ignore in myself.

Rieko jerked the PADD out of Jim's hand and read it, her eyes taking in every word, every punctuation mark. She looked up and said so everyone on the bridge could hear her, "Everything looks genuine and in order. The Federation and Starfleet felt it would be most beneficial if Captain James T. Hode commanded Durant since Vice Admiral Toocool was involved in other aspects of this Task Force and could not come back to Durant as she had done during the Romulan War." Evelyn looked at Jim, "Now I know how you felt when you were removed from Durant so that Vice Admiral Toocool could lead us during the Romulan war. Before you left, you showered me with praise and said one day I would have a command of my own." She laughed softly, shaking her head, "And now you are here to take this command away from me. So Starfleet does not think I have what it takes to command this ship through this Borg Task Force." She narrowed her eyes looking at Jim, giving him a cold stare and added, "They are wrong." She looked at his uniform again and his black gloves, frowning. "Why are you wearing gloves, Captain Hode?"

Hode looked to Evelyn and sounded a little more like his old self when he said: "Sorry about this, Number One. They apparently felt time in grade and experience in full command outweighed... well," he ran his hand through his hair, "Have a skin thing, getting better." He paused a moment, "Good idea, Lieutenant T'Pris." Turning to Zania, he said, "Try that. As soon as you get their response, tie in Durant computers to that frequency and download our LCARS to the Bech ship. This will allow them to augment our weapons and shields and work to create a united front against the Borg." He turned back to Evelyn, "You have the conn. I'll be in my Ready Room. Let me know as soon as we are in contact." He then turned and moved towards a door, stopped, changed direction, and moved to the correct door.

Bonj: With the alert status raised, time was now of the essence. With every stroke and touch of the screen, it would seem the situation both outside the ship and inside the ship was getting heated. The Borg potentially getting ready to blast us out of space and the two Captains ready to fight one another for command, or at least that's how it felt it was leading. "Balancing the power levels across both engines and weapons." He took another look as the Captain departed, this was getting uncomfortable. He pressed a switch. "Operations to Engineering, do you have an update on our warp drive status?" He gave one last look at the XO, giving her a knowing and sympathizing look before turning to his station once more.

Jordan monitored the nearest Borg space battle, supplementing sensor information with scans from the probe. Since Captains Hode and Rieko were both along his sight line, he carefully looked between them as he gave his report. "Additional sensor information is coming in now. Both the Bech and the Borg are equipped with standard Borg weapons, adaptive shields, and regenerative self-repair technology. This means that assuming an equal number of combatants on each side, the battle would be a continuing stalemate." Captain Hode left the Bridge, and Hal spoke to Evelyn in a lowered voice. "So the Bech are the 'good guys' and the Borg are once again the 'bad guys?' And we're supposed to turn over all of our top secret ship configuration files to the Bech now? Please pardon me if I remain skeptical about giving them our command codes and security data. I didn't see assimilation in my immediate future...until just now." Jordan continued, "Also, Starfleet doesn't shoot first. We never fire unless we're fired upon. Do you believe that Starfleet Command would authorize an attack on a ship that had not attacked us? I don't."

Turner thought about it for a moment and realized that they did have one resource that could help them push a communication through the interference and the Expanse. She quickly tapped her console to tap into the deflector dish since it wasn't being used by other departments at the moment. It was perfect, as the shape and power that could be directed through it would create a communications focal point that hopefully would be able to push through any disruption. "Sir, I should be able to hail the ship within 30 seconds. I'm finishing the necessary adjustments now."

Siva'nek: Noting the highly irregular lack of pips on Captain Hode, and I had noticed the gloves on his hand, but with the Captain's question I would be HIGHLY interested in why he was wearing gloves too. I didn't quite buy into the "It's a skin thing," but wait and see. So far no foreign or Borg materials in his body that our med scanners can detect. I am seriously concerned about giving the Bech our codes and data. I have not been in Starfleet long enough to have ever seen this situation happen before, to give our loyalty to a man who from the reports I read, left his command for ... Love. He bonded with an alien queen. Now he commands us? If he left Starfleet for an alien culture, how do we know he won't turn us over to the Borg, either variety? I am on extreme high alert watching him walk off the bridge but hesitating for a moment looking for the right door. I am not confident yet in his ability to lead. I do hope Starfleet knows what they are doing. I keep my calm exterior waiting for things to unfold.

Rieko looks around the bridge as Captain Hode disappears into his Ready Room. "Everyone, belay those orders!" She turns to Hal, "We don't know which type of Borg are the good ones and which are the bad ones. I think they are all bad when it comes to other races, the original Borg with the green cubes and orbs want to assimilate other races...us! And the orange Bech ones are also trying to assimilate, but they want our ships and technology, not us, not organics. The end result is the same. Borg and Bech assimilate." She looks around the bridge. "They will not get this ship!" She ran her fingers through the ends of her hair as she does when worried or excited. "There is something strange about Captain Hode. He is different. I knew the Captain Hode that commanded Durant, and this is not him. Something is wrong with him, something he is hiding under those gloves I bet. Something is out of place and wrong. You cannot take orders from a stranger that is really strange, that walks on board our ship and wants to give it to the Bech, without any explanations, without any information, or data. The orders for him to take Command of Durant are in order but nowhere does it state we should give Durant to the Bech, and I won't do it. Who is with me?" She bites her lower lip looking at each member of the bridge crew. "I realize I'm in fact asking all of you to commit mutiny, but what else can I do? Let the Bech take our ship?" She looks around the bridge again. "Suggestions." She then walks up to the helm, "Lieutenant Bonj, take us to coordinates 154 mark 8."

Bonj: Overhearing the commotion, he chimed in his thoughts. "It's very convenient for someone to give us orders and assume command when we are isolated from any outside communication with Starfleet. Essentially, what happens on this bridge is off the radar from anybody else." After hearing the XO's orders, he immediately punched the numbers in. "1, 5, 4 mark 8... We are a crew and like all the finest crews, we stick together! I'm with you, XO!"

Jordan checked over the Tactical console again. Shields were up and weapons were all online, as per usual for a Red Alert situation. He was able to discern no threat to Durant at present, since neither Bech nor Borg had fired a shot in their direction. He spoke quietly to Evelyn again. "I remember an Intel file from years back, where an imposter named Kieran MacDuff had posed as the Enterprise-D's Executive Officer. He ordered the crew to destroy a lightly defended space station with 15,000 people aboard. The Captain identified this as an illegal order and refused to permit it." As Evelyn had addressed the Bridge crew, determined not to follow Hode's orders, Hal spoke in a normal voice. "I am with you, Captain Rieko. Even though this person looks like Captain Hode to us, he is issuing us an illegal order. It is our duty as Starfleet officers to refuse. Also, the lack of pips and the presence of gloves is highly suspicious. I suggest that 'Captain Hode' should be called back to the bridge and forced to remove the gloves and submit to a medical examination in front of all of us. As Tactical Officer, I do have a hand phaser in my console, and I'm not afraid to use it."

Turner had completed the adjustments, but hadn't yet implemented the attempts at a communication that might reach past the expanse or hail the other ship. "I didn't detect anything emotionally from the Captain that might be alarming or make me suspicious; however, there are some species that can not be read empathically or otherwise. We don't even know if completing the communications breakthrough will be their resource to turn the tide against us. I stand with the decision of the crew."

Siva'nek: Hearing and feeling the Captain's extreme distress about Captain Hode and the situation with her face expressing anger and upset I think for a moment at her request, assess the situation, and how I felt about his demeanor. No pips, no real friendliness toward his old XO, no expression of real regret. He felt devoid of any real human emotion, which I expect from a 100% human knowing them enough working on this ship and in other situations. Assessing Captain Rieko’s request to mutiny against this man, hearing Hal's description of him and suggestions, I weigh it in my mind carefully. We are alone in this at the moment, to willingly give ourselves to the Borg is never a good idea, ever. A shiver runs through me thinking of the Borg tech I learned about in medical classes while we worked on their cadavers. Calmly I speak out loud. "I agree, Captain, with Captain Hal's suggestion of a medical examination of his ungloved hands, I can use my hypo spray to relax his body enough to hold him still. I also agree we should NOT hand ourselves to any Borg of any type. I agree we should not follow this man's orders but follow yours." I hope we make it through this situation even if a court martial is in our future, better than Borg. The thought of becoming one is beyond distasteful to me.

Evelyn had been able to keep her emotions in check, and there were many different emotions flowing through her. Could she do this to Jim? Incite a mutiny against him? He had been her friend and it had been her secret, but he had always held a special place in her heart. He was such a good man and a good Captain and arbitrator. He and his queen wife had done wonderful things on the planets Cronon and Tramlu. Her thoughts raced. However, this person was not Jim Hode, or if it is Jim, something had been done to him, and she believed in her heart and mind that she was doing the right thing by the mutiny. She looked to helm and nodded, feeling relief that he had obeyed her order over Jim's. "Thank you Lieutenant Bonj." Then she heard Hal also join the mutiny and her smile widened, "Thank you Captain Jordan, that is valuable information. This seems to be a similar situation as the one with the imposter named Kieran MacDuff on Enterprise-D, and you are correct we cannot obey an illegal order. I will put your suggestion in motion, Captain Jordan. I wanted to follow Hode into his ready room and try reasoning with him, but then I realized that would not work. It's like he's programmed. He did show a bit of feeling for a few seconds but I'm sure it's not genuine." She looked to Ops/Comms feeling happy and relieved Zania joined the mutiny. "Admiral Turner, it is strange you could not read him with your Betazoid skills. That shows he's not human or under deep mind control. I will go to his ready room, and ask him to join us again on the bridge. Captain Jordan, you will have your phaser on stun and  aimed at him and I will order him to take off his gloves and submit to the medical exam." She looked to Narek, "Doctor, be prepared with everything you need. Everyone stay alert!" She felt so good inside knowing that all of the bridge crew was with her on this. To mutiny or not to mutiny? That was the question, and she received her answer. Mutiny!
