USS T-Durant Mission TDRP20-16: "Oops." 200531

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

DURANT MISSION TDRP20-16
Sun May 31, 2020
OOC Preparation
==============

STARDATE: 200531
CREW CALL TIME: 1115 SLT Sharp
LOCATION TO MEET: Durant Transporter Room
RP LOCATION: A Jungle
MISSION LEAD/GM: RAdm Toocool

WHAT TO WEAR:
UFS Duty Uniform - YES
Tricorders, Sample Containers
Security - Holstered Phasers

WHAT TO KNOW:
-the ship is in Sector 005E
- we left Pinastri three weeks ago
-the alert level is: normal
-we are in orbit of S/2418 G343-4

POST ORDER: Will be decided, and posted, by the Mission Leader just prior to mission start (and sometimes adjusted in the RP if necessary).

IC Premise: Durant was deployed to Sector 005E for some nice boring charting and scientific survey work. Science detected an uncharted system. The planets were uninhabited and none were class M. But a moon orbiting the fourth planet (S/2418 G343-4) was found to have a breathable atmosphere. Ship's sensors detected plant and animal life. Finally - after being in orbit for some days - it was decided two small away teams would go down for a look. It's not often one can actually see a world that mirrors the development of Earth back in the Mesozoic era.

Upon landing the away teams started their work of scanning and observation, but swiftly encountered reptiles resembling Terran clade Dinosauria, genus herbivorous ceratopsid. Extremely small ones. Admiral Toocool had examined what appeared to be a lintel stone placed over the entrance of a small cave. This, along with the sounds emitted by the creatures, led her to suspect they might be sentient. Crewman Hunsaker was able to adjust the universal translator effectively and she was shortly proved to be correct. The Durant teams had inadvertently made First Contact with a new, unknown, pre-warp species.

Given the situation, another away team was deployed to the planet surface to assist in observation and to collect data. Another security officer beamed down to replace one who had to return to the ship after ingesting one of the local flowers in an effort to please their hosts.

Now Chichil has invited ‘Toocool’ and her people to attend a traditional Pangaean celebration in their honor, to be held under the light of the Evening Star by the Pool of Ja near the Chak Tree.

Poison Toocool: Now that the little ones had gone away to prepare for their celebration, Toocool took a few moments to take care of some logistical items. Irritated that Ensignign Landar had eaten something on an away mission and caused an issue, she ordered him to return to Durant. She gave orders for a replacement, and asked for two additional Operations officers. For one in particular she had a specific order. She waited with Dan and Leni in the jungle, contemplating her next moves and very aware she was in contravention of Starfleet's highest law. She had not yet figured out how to deal with that.

Dan Hunsaker could tell the CO was on edge, probably about the whole "how do we undo the Prime Directive violation and minimize damage here" thing. They stood quietly nearby, letting her think, while examining more of the tricorder readings they'd been collecting since beaming down. This was going to be a tricky situation even without the science reports they would file when they got back to the ship, so they said nothing about them, yet. For the moment, their job was simple. Observe, record, analyze.

Xoxoc peered through the reeds and fronds at the remaining biped creatures standing nearby. One had left the area using their magical sparkly waterfall, replaced by three others. Their outer skins varied slightly in color and number of shiny attachments from creature to creature. Other than the fur on top of their heads and their height differences, it was difficult to tell them apart. Then an interesting thought hit him. It was probably hard for them to tell the members of the Tricerops tribe one from another. Save for their colors, they looked generally the same. He wondered if it would be possible for them to wear some shiny things too.

Leni looked at Ensignign Bodan before he was shipped out, not at all surprised at his resulting condition after eating the flower. She shook her head and murmured "Really you'd think a Starfleet officer would know better that chomp any pretty looking flower just cause it's pretty and available. I warned him it wouldn't be good for him! OK granted, with half of it hanging out of his mouth and the other half being digested, but he was so darn quick!" She returns her attention to more constructive matters namely the analysis of the strange new mini dino like creatures they found in the pool. She was still amazed at the brain activity and how far advanced that was for any reptilian creature she had observed, and for its size too! She tries to keep herself aware of developments around as Bodan is hurried back to sick bay, and still investigate this life form.

Rain Elton: After materializing from the Transporter Beam, Rain takes a moment to look around and get her bearings. Moving over to the Captain, she acknowledges her with a "Sir. I brought the item you requested" and reaches into her bag and pulls out a pair of trousers and holds them out for her to take. Stepping back, she then continues to take in her surroundings.

Yayah sniffs a green leaf and gives thanks to Pangaea. She can see the 6 lights in the sky that orbit our star, Tonat. She whispers to herself. Pangaea is the Mother of all life, before, now, and after. She gifts us with the flowers which make up most of our diet, and the flowing water. We are so fortunate. And now we have company and a welcome dance for them. She wonders if they are some kind of dinosaur from a distant land. Very odd to have two legs instead of four. Related to the Tyran, maybe? (T-Rex) But the Tyran do not come to our valley. They were banished long ago. And these have no horns at all. Very odd. But they are pleasing on the eye.

Bruno Bonj: One of the gifts of being in Starfleet was the opportunity to experience 'strange new worlds,' a cliche saying, but nevertheless as thrilling as it is dangerous. It was one of Bruno's first away missions and he knew the importance of getting it right. However it wasn't easy to relax when there was an underlying tension in the air. The CO was undoubtedly conflicted. In this case, Bruno decided to focus his attention on the task at hand. He scanned the beautiful surroundings, looking at the weird and wonderful foliage that stretched as far as the eye could see. His hand brushed across a small flower, which changed colour upon contact. It was a truly unusual world that they had found themselves on.

Elsa: "Sir, is it advised that you walk off alone?"

Chichil looked around at the preparations, wanting everything to be just right for Mother Pangaea's blessings. The tribe had worked hard to make this Traditional Pangaean celebration the best they'd ever had. She had invited the Eldar Toocool and her tribe to attend. This celebration will be in their honor. Under the light of the evening star by the Pool of the Ja near the Chak Tree. Although these strange creatures are different from them, she felt drawn to the golden eyed Eldar. Her intelligence and gentleness were contradictory to other feelings Chicil had about these new friends. "Mother Pangaea bless us and our new friends. Give me the wisdom to understand if they are truly friends or enemies." Her thoughts went to the Tyran, and how they once terrorized her kind.

Toocool took the item of clothing she had requested be brought to her, with a sharp nod to Rain. Moving quickly, she stepped into the shadows under the palm trees and behind some brush. She acknowledged Ensignign Elsa's comment with a grunt. She pulled off her boots, slipped on a pair of uniform trousers, and pulled her boots back on. As she did so, she felt sheepish. Had it been so long away from Command of her own ship that she forgot to change her uniform before beaming down on an away mission. She hadn't worried about it much at first - the weather here was warm and the air was pleasant on her bare legs. But once she had met Chichil, been invited to this celebration 'under the evening stars', she thought it would be better if she covered her legs. For safety as well as aesthetic reasons. Scratches from the brushes here might be benign, but given what had happened to Bodan, better safe than sorry. She stepped back out from the bushes and looked towards her crew members. "Ensign Elsa, take point please," she nodded ahead, where a gap between the rocks was apparent. "Let's stay together, and stay alert," she stepped onto what appeared to be a well designed path. She marvelled that the tiny creatures had placed stones in intricate designs to create it.

Elsa: "Sir, is everything okay over there?"

Hunsaker: Noting the path, they began to do a structural scan to see how it might have been assembled, especially given the quadrupedal nature of their hosts. The level of technology they employed, and their biology, should make construction of this type highly unlikely, and yet here they are. The scans come back more puzzling than the path itself.

Xoxoc looked around at the delicious food growing nearby, silently giving thanks that it had been provided for them. He thought of a novel way to welcome the new visitors, perhaps also a way to encourage diversity in their lovely food.

Leni looks somewhat unsure as she feels preparations seem to be being made to go somewhere with these creatures. It was so easy to think of them as harmless because of their appearance, but brain activity engrams like these were as capable as any Cardassian, Ferengi or Internecivus raptus, of being devious and motivated by their own self interests and gain. She urges caution to the Rear Admiral "Sir we should take this slow, maybe split up rather than all go anywhere in one group so we have some sort of backup? I don't mean to be unnecessarily untrusting but all we know of these creatures so far is that they are just as capable of being dangerous as they are cute. We should be extra careful in early dealings with them in my view." Notices Lieutenant Bruno touch a flower, which reacts to that contact, and pokes his ribs quite hard with a tricorder and gives him a hard stare with a glance between the flower and his hand and makes her warning clear: "You don't have to ingest something for it to get into your bloodstream, you know?"

Elsa pulls out a security tricorder and scans around the landing party.

Elton takes out the tricorder from her bag and, careful to follow instructions to make sure the sound is off, she begins her mission prep by scanning the flora until she hears the order from the Captain to move out. Continuing to take in readings, she follows along simply collecting data.

Elsa: "Sir, there is a small dinosaur by my feet."

Yayah ponders while she waits for the guests to arrive. The 2 legs told us to expect more of their friends, and that they have needed to tend to a sick one. She hopes that the sacred pool where we take our young and elders to be bathed and blessed may consider this day a lucky day. She hopes that the sick one could bathe and be cured.

Bonj glances at Crewman Hunsaker's tricorder information, patching it through to his own tricorder. He nods and looks over. "The intricacy is astounding. We could learn a lot from this data when it comes to architectural micro-structuring." He suddenly feels a sharp pain in his ribs. "Ouch, jeez. I didn't mean to touch the flower! Fortunately, the readings look like this particular specimen is harmless. I won't make the same mistake again, however!"

Elsa: "Sir, I am detecting a life form near our location."

Chichil: "Greetings and Mother Pangaea's blessings to you all." She nods six times. She looks at them on various areas of the path and says, "Gardening is very important to us as it pleases our Mother, while Pangaea provides, tending the wilds and carefully nourishing the plants and flowers is an important duty for us, her children." She looks up at each of them in the eyes, one at a time, then continues. ". Those who step on growing things, or damage seeds, or Pangaea forbid, cut things down that should not be cut, are, if caught, brought before the Elders for anything from a stern lecture to banishment. We carefully place paths so that the tribe can move through the landscape without destroying Pangaea's gifts." She then looks to this tribe's Eldar. "You and your tribe are welcome here. All who are peaceful and of good heart are welcome. Blessings on you and yours. Please join us for our Traditional Pangaean celebration, in your honor, all of you. Come bless this path with me." She turns and walks toward the clearing.

Elsa: "Sir, shall we follow the creature that was here with us?"

Toocool: It was strange. Among the typical human, and certainly next to, say, a Klingon, Poison is diminutive. But here, she feels like a giant. She is aware that every step she makes is potentially marring a pristine environment. She supposes the transporter tries to remove as much as possible from their matter streams when transporting to a new world, but still, there must be bacteria in her mouth and on her breath. She looks where Elsa is pointing, and sees that Chichil is approaching. She observes closely as the little one speaks, marveling that such a tiny creature demonstrates such intelligence. "We are very honoured you have invited us to join you, Chichil. Ah... we accept Pangaea's blessings with grateful thanks. Please show us the way." She acknowledges Leni's suggestion: "Ensign Elsa, Commander Leni, with me. Lieutenant Elton take Mr Bonj and Mr Hansaker and follow behind, fan out to the left and make your observations. Looks like you need to... stay on the path." (She is reminded of the holonovel 'The Hobbit' when the dwarves and Mr Bilbo are admonished by the wizard, Gandalf, to 'stay on the path' in Mirkwood.)

Elsa: "Aye, sir."

Hunsaker: Continuing to scan, they follow the Captain's instructions as they move along the path, careful not to step off the carefully laid stones. For personal safety as well as honoring the beliefs and traditions of their hosts. Sticking close to their assigned group, they look carefully at everything, searching for more signs of construction.

Xoxoc watched as Chichil walked away, heading for the bipeds to lead them back to the welcome ceremony. Then he noticed them returning with Chichil, in two separate groups. Their actions seemed somewhat strange, as though they were looking for danger or expecting an attack. He hoped his Big Idea would comfort them and ease their troubled minds.

Leni shakes her head at the prevailing hearty appetite for risk! Whether deliberately or subconsciously, finds herself hanging back a bit, until the CO acknowledges her suggestion for caution and splits us into two groups. Before stepping forward to accompany the CO and Ensign Elsa in the forward group, pokes Lieutenant Bruno again on the way past. "That's you shan't make the same mistake again ... Ma'am!" and leaves him with a half scowl and half smile, taking an extra slow step forwards and scanning behind as much as ahead now. Finding Lieutenant Elton bringing up the rear, cannot help passing the remark "Is it normal for helm to be at the back, hmm?"

Elton nods, acknowledging the Captain's order and moves to group with her two crewmates. Careful to stay on the indicated path, she overhears the remark from the science officer and simply quirks an eyebrow and otherwise ignores it knowing her presence was requested by the Captain.

Yayah: Noticing the 2 separate groups, she wonders if 2 is an important number for these strange people. They certainly have 2 legs. Some have two shiny jewels attached to their fabrics, and wonders if these are the lucky ones with 2 children.

Bonj: As a communications specialist, Bruno was (rather ironically) speechless. These creatures displayed a remarkable level of intelligence when it came to linguistics. He decided it would be easier to log his thoughts rather than say them out loud, for fear of offending. "The creatures display incredible skills in not just linguistic structure but also in projection, especially for their size. They have a remarkable insight in regards to other species. Breathtaking." He clicked a switch and turned his screen off. "Understood, ready when you are, Lieutenant Elton."

Elsa: "Sir, these life forms are strange. I am not too sure of what to make of this."

Chichil: "Blessings on you all, our new friends, please come closer in front of the platform. We have our traditional Ceremonial dance, and then we will eat the blessings from Mother Pangaea."

Toocool followed Chichil and the security officer. She moved between the two huge standing stones and almost stopped in her tracks. What an amazing place. There were two waterfalls, one on each side. The jungle had been trimmed back and there were some open areas. She saw their hosts waiting in a pool by one of the falls. On the other side of the clearing - surrounded by huge stones meters high - the other waterfall featured a tree with hanging moss. Beneath it was a dish of some kind, and in front of it was a tiny structure that reminded her of a teeny Mayan temple. They continued until they were in front of the little creatures - three of them, only. She looked around, wondering if there were more. Hard to know, they could all hide quite easily in the shadows. "Any other life forms nearby, Mr Leni?" she asked in a whisper.

Hunsaker: Upon seeing all the new structures in the clearing the groups have been led to, their jaw drops, and they have a hard time deciding what to scan first. There's simply too much to choose from, so they start with the left side and slowly sweep right, trying to take in everything, and work out how, exactly, these tiny four-legged creatures could possibly have built any of it. They listen with only half an ear to their hosts.

Xoxoc noted the two groups of bipeds returning to the celebration area. They stayed apart from each other, spread out at quite a distance. It was very strange, but perhaps it was normal for them. The one closest to them was waving a small chirruping device back and forth. Possibly it was a way of conferring a blessing upon them.

Leni walks forward, taking care to stay on the path. Giving the CO and Ensign Elsa a quizzical look as they step off the path towards the creatures before a sigh and a shrug of the shoulders and she follows on, muttering something almost inaudible about inconsistency and unscientific and risky. She catches up with the pair and studies the creatures and looks around for any large potential cooking pots filled with water and veggies with skewers simmering nicely in readiness. She whispers as she joins the pair, "No Sir, no sign of any other life forms other than these three here from my scans, but it's a small area we're covering." She pauses before adjoining "...you know most creatures anything like these were carnivorous. The herbivores tended to be way less advanced in intelligence."

Elton: Nodding at Bodan, she moves into the clearing and seeing the 'tiny dinosaurs' for the first time, she can't help but think of the IDIC theorem and yet theorize how these creatures could so closely resemble Earth's famous ones. It was a question that the Science team would have to answer. Her job was to collect data, and so she continued to do so

Yayah turns to who she believes is the Eldar of this group. She stares at her golden mesmerizing eyes, nods six times and whispers to her. "Yayah welcomes you, as do we all in our tribe, in the traditional way of nodding by chicuace. The number six is very important to us, as are names. We carefully choose the names for our children, sometimes including the name of the day they were born; but many of our children have flower names. Those with beautiful horns are highly sought after for mates. Those with six living children have a special place among the elders. Is your special number the number 2? Are your eyes considered your beauty? How are you named? Is that noisy box a pet?"

Bonj: Whilst the other team present themselves to the quadrupeds, Bruno subtly takes his tricorder out and crouches down towards the tiny structures around them. He grew up amongst many tiny models, his Father was an avid modeller in his spare time. Yet to see structures like this standing on their own with such specific detailing, it was a sight to behold. With a few clicks, the tricorder scans. He walks towards Lieutenant JG Elton and whispers to her. "Tricorder's got the answers. It contains molecules which directly interfere with our scans, they deflect our signals. That, coupled with their size, well, it's no wonder we didn't detect any of this!"

Elsa scans the area to see if any life forms can be detected and then readjust my tricorder range. "Sir, I am detecting something faint past the waterfalls. I am not sure what it is. It just shows it is a biosignature."

Chichil looks and listens to the new creatures. It is obvious they do not trust us, so that means maybe they should not trust them. They were strange creatures with those things in their paws and waving those things around, also those strange coverings. She looks to their Eldar, Toocool. "Some of your tribe are off waving those things with no interest in this blessed celebration, in your honor....molecules, scans, built tee structure, tricor-da! We have many questions, what is your kind called if not Tyran? Why are you here? Do you know where our Eldar is? We believe you are a friend. Are you friends?

Toocool stands incredulous in front of the three creatures. The waterfall is surrounded by stone steps, carefully placed and aligned. Markings on the stones create intricate designs that resemble brow horns and the curve of a bony frill, or perhaps a tail. One of them speaks, she listens closely, frowning as she realizes Elsa's tricorder is obvious. "Ensign," she hisses, "try to hide that device from these pre-warp life forms." Turning back, she responds, "We are honoured to be here among you. We are six," she gestures to herself and the other five, "we did not plan it so but it appears fate has organized it. We have many names, for we come from many families who chose names that are meaningful to them for their children. One place we come from values the number three very highly." She smiled slightly, "Some find my eyes beautiful." They seemed to glow now, as that within her stirred. Standing in the wild yet somehow cultured beauty of this amazing place. "I am called Toocool. That box," she pointed to the one she hoped the Ensign would hide away, "is just a tool. Like a stone or a piece of wood." She acknowledges the Security Officer's report with a nod of her head, turns her head to look at Leni meaningfully as though to say 'follow that up' and continues, "We are from a place called Durant. We live there in fellowship. We are very curious and like to visit, and meet, other... Life." We are very honoured to have met you, and to be here in your special place, under the light of the Evening Star by the Pool of Ja near the Chak Tree." Then her eyes widen as Chichil speaks and she realizes their attempt to hide who they are and what they are doing has failed. "Our kind is called..." she falters, what to say... "Federation. We do not know where your Eldar is..." she pauses, wondering if the life form just detected is this lost Eldar... "and yes, we are friends. We mean no harm to you or yours. We come with open hearts and open hands, respectful of your customs." She bowed her head.

Hunsaker: Noting the sudden change in the tone of their hosts' speech, their attention snaps back to the moment, and they slip their tricorder away, sensing the tensions rising on both sides. Hopefully this won't turn into a fight, because it's almost certain the new Security officer will obliterate the poor creatures before things can be de-escalated. And it would be a shame to ruin any of this gorgeous scene.

Xoxoc listened as the others delivered their ceremonial welcoming speeches. He wagged his tail six times, nodding in time with the wags, and then spoke up loudly and clearly. "Xoxoc also welcomes you, honored visitors, new friends, Federation (his tongue tripped over the unfamiliar word). It is regrettable that one of your number was taken ill after eating the beautiful xithilaboonkie flower. Perhaps it would be best not to partake of our delicious food if it causes you pain. But now I would like to offer an exchange...take any plant you like, and leave us one of your own food plants. Both of us will benefit from this - you can study our plant, and your plant will enrich our blessed Pangaea with diversity." He bowed respectfully.

Leni tries hard to not be too 'down' on the situation and not wanting to draw too much from small things, she does offer a low-level whisper to those closest to her. "What, 6? As in there's three of them there now so 666?! That number has a special meaning alright!" Takes a small step away from the other two towards the backup group just to play on the safe side a bit. "On the upside, no cooking pots! So there's something at least!" As she steps away she hears Ensign Elsa's report and adjusts the configuration of and trains her tricorder on the waterfalls keeping it as quiet as possible but feeling it important to know if there was something else there out of sight.

Elton listens as Bodan relays the information he has, and then nodding, "A remarkable observation Mr Bonj. I will continue to gather general data of the area while you scan at the molecular level. Together we should have enough data to keep the Science department occupied for a long time to come". Glancing over to the science officer, she can't help but wonder what idiom she would come up with upon assimilation of the data, as her vast encyclopedia of expressions would put even the ship's computer to test. She was still researching an earlier comment of 'Honeybee's knees' and could not find the reason for it when bees clearly did not have knees. Shaking her head slightly she turns back to her job and continues to scan.

Yayah looks at the 2 legs and says, "Any shadow cast by the sun is to be enjoyed, but in the darkness of night we must be mindful to avoid the dreaded Teccizt (man of the moon), who descends from the heavens to devour those below. Here we are safe as he has not been seen here. Our old stories tell us that Pangaea and Teccizt once mated and the Mother bore the best of all creatures, us, the Tricerops, to populate the moon and achieve many great things."

Bonj listens to the CO, detecting that this already fragile situation could be close to shattering into pieces. Yet, he knew that creatures such as this could be regarded as a scientific marvel. An example of quadruped life with an advanced perspicacity in linguistic communication. This could not only change understanding of language and natural communication but also help aid the universal translators, perhaps in ways in which could broaden Starfleet's ability to reach out to new species. With this in mind, he switched his Tricorder to 'silent-record' mode, analyzing all audio whilst giving the outward impression of being switched off. It was risky, yes, but the benefit of such material was worth it in his eyes.

Elsa stashes my tricorder away so it cannot be seen while still taking readings, at the same time tries to cover the knife strapped to my leg by crossing my legs to not intimidate the life forms. "I am sorry if i had offended you by my actions. It is truly not my intention." Stands there trying to act innocent, while thinking in my mind 'I cannot trust these unknown life forms.'

Chichil hears the Eldar Toocool speak, and says, "Eldar Toocool, I believe it is truth you speak. I feel your spirit. You are strong, you are kind, you are friend. You did not want to tell us the truth for some reason I can not imagine why....but..." She looks up into the golden eyes, "I know it is for a good reason." She looks around at the others. Some are rude, some seem to dismiss us, some seem suspicious of us, but she realizes they just do not know any better. The Eldar understands. She hears Yayah speak of the Teccizt, and shudders. "Oh yes, our new friends, you may spend the night in shelter with us. Do not wander out in the night. The Teccizt, will be about and will painfully devour you if you wander. Please..." She smiles, "...bless our home with your presence." Xoxoc speaks for us all on this blessed occasion, "Pangaea has blessed us with your presence and we shall begin." She pauses then looks up happily. "But for now, we will begin the Traditional Celebration with a dance! Please join us and do the dance of your people." She looks at Toocool again then says, "The Fede-ra-tion", and smiles.
