USS T-Durant Mission TDRP20-09: "The stars look very different today..." 200315

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

DURANT MISSION TDRP20-09
STARDATE: 200315

PREAMBLE:
On stardate 200216 the USS Taylorholic Durant entered Klakkr's Drift (Sector 004D Polenta) in order to avoid confrontation with three potentially hostile vessels. One small ship with ten crew... along with two other ships, cloaked, and on an intercept course with the flagship. A metallurgical and structural analysis of the uncloaked vessel, along with examination of life signs aboard, led to the conclusion that the first of the three ships was Romulan. It wasn't difficult to surmise that the two cloaked ships were affiliated with the first vessel. While sensors could not penetrate their cloaks, a slight subspace variance was detected, allowing Tactical to suggest the vessels were travelling at warp speed, and that each of these subspace displacements exhibited the characteristic mass of a Romulan warbird.

Unwilling to risk a confrontation, Commander Evelyn Rieko made the decision to change course and enter the Drift, knowing that systems would be affected. The nebular cloud itself, while providing some protection from the pursuing ships, would affect navigation, tactical and science sensors; communications; warp drive; and perhaps pose a challenge in terms of keeping the deflector dish online and maintaining deflector shields.

It was important for the flagship to drop to impulse and vary its course after crossing the event horizon of the Drift, so that the pursuers could not extrapolate the Durant's probable trajectory. In addition, a formation of nine probes were deployed forward in order to assist with navigation and the avoidance of unseen hazards. A single probe was fired aft, to collect telemetry on the hostile vessels should they locate the Federation starship in the Drift.

Unexpected issues began to arise as the Durant moved deeper into the nebular cloud. Communications with the probes began to fail. The density around the ship seemed to be increasing, closing in on the flagship and putting pressure on the shields and hull integrity. Tactical strongly recommended phasers be taken offline, due to the fact that firing an energy weapon in the thick gasses could potentially ignite them and cause significant damage to ship and crew. Communications with the probes was growing even more spotty, but Tactical felt that at least two of them had reached a barrier of some kind. Medical was gravely concerned to hear that kinoplasmic radiation had been detected and that levels were increasing. This type of radiation is known to affect biological systems and humanoid brains.

Commander Rieko then decided the Durant should change course and exit the Drift as soon as possible. The flagship turned and attempted to backtrack. Helm reported a sluggish response and suggested that although speed had been increased, the ship was actually moving slower. Tactical reported that the nebular cloud around the ship was thicker than ever. Communications with at least two of the probes seemed to have been lost altogether, and the others were continuing to respond haphazardly. Still, enough telemetry was received to support a report that the Drift seemed to surround a subspace rupture. Shield strength was slowly failing and hull integrity was being affected by the increasing pressure outside the ship.

Something was squeezing, perhaps holding, the USS Taylorholic Durant in its cloudy grip.

Then some crew reported feeling a 'breeze', hearing a sound. Helm lost control. Tactical reported the Romulans - their two black-hulled warbirds now decloaked - were now within visual range. A voice, sounding very much like Evelyn Rieko, repeated something the Commander had said moments before. And all of a sudden, the Romulans disappeared into the nebular mist as the Durant was propelled away by some unknown force. Before all communications with the remaining probes was lost, Tactical was able to extrapolate that the flagship was being dragged through Klakkr's Drift towards the subspace fracture.

LAST TIME ON STARSHIP DURANT:
An unknown force dragged the USS Taylorholic Durant deeper into Klakkr's Drift, and away from three Romulan vessels (a smaller scout ship and two warbirds) that had entered the nebula in search of the flagship. It was suggested that the extra-thick cloud squeezing in on the Durant had organic properties. Sounds were heard by some crew members, who felt that this might indicate that thicker cloud was an entity attempting to communicate. Helm reported that, despite increasing speed, the Durant was travelling in the opposite direction to where it wished to go, and recommended taking engines offline to avoid ripping the ship in two. Intelligence and Science came up with novel ways to force the entity to ‘let go’ of Durant. They succeeded. Intelligence reported receipt of a distress call. Source could not be pinpointed.

Although free of 'the entity', the flagship is now within shouting distance of a subspace fracture, and gravimetric forces are pulling the ship towards it. Oh, and the distress call? It was determined to have a Federation signature.

========/\========
SHIP'S STATUS:
Location: Klakkr’s Drift, Polenta Sector

Trajectory: 95,000 kms from a subspace fracture
Speed: not established, drifting towards the fracture
Engines: warp offline, impulse & thrusters available
Navigational Sensors: Offline

Alert level: Yellow
Tactical Sensors: Offline
Weapons: Phasers offline, torpedo bays loaded. Ability to lock on target may be compromised.
Shields: 65 percent

Science Sensors: Offline
Astrometrics: Offline

Communications: Long range comms profoundly affected
Energy levels: dropping, power has been transferred from non-essential systems to boost shields and hull integrity
Deflector dish: Nominal, must be maintained

Hull integrity: 90 percent
Inertial dampers: Online
Life Support: Nominal

Special note: Kinoplasmic radiation levels around the Durant are 6.2Gy’s and rising as we approach the fracture. Medical has expressed concern and is devising treatment to assist the crew to maintain health.

Probes: Nine probes were deployed to assist with navigation and sensors. Telemetry has been intermittent. Once in a while we receive a rare signal from the four that have managed to maintain contact with us.

Klakkr’s Drift - we have established that the Drift is a class J dark nebula containing dense clouds that obscure the visible wavelengths of light from the objects behind it… . We have discovered that it surrounds a subspace fracture (an anomaly that emits kinoplasmic radiation). [We would know that, according to the logs of the USS Voyager, a rip in subspace could potentially allow travel through time.]

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Evelyn Rieko: The beautiful music flowed through the speakers and the entity had released them. The Blue Danube Waltz continued to play... the familiar notes playing, and memories of that night...the night she danced waltzing around 10-forward with Jim came into her mind. She smiled, then pushed the memories away. Durant was in a dangerous situation, she had to focus, and stay focused to get out of this situation. The ship had been pulled deeper into Klakkr's Drift, a Class J Nebula, squeezed and pulled by an entity, and now drifting with no control over navigation or tactical. "Science, work with Engineering to get the Navigation and Tactical Sensors working ASAP. We have to gain some control of the ship. On last telemetry from a probe it showed we are drifting toward a subspace fracture!. Reports everyone."

Rain Elton: "Sir, propulsion is off and we are currently drifting. *pauses* Being pulled? I have inadequate information as to the nature of our movement, but from the sporadic telemetry readings I am getting we are moving." Nods and confirms what the commander says. "Last readings showed us approximately 95 thousand kilometers from the subspace fracture".

Leni breathes a sigh of satisfied relief that the 'whale' had been harmlessly coaxed into letting go of its new 'toy' and that the ship was returned to its own power. She whispers audibly to everyone and no-one in particular as the spectre of the subspace fracture now takes centre stage, "Well out of the belly of the whale and into the jaws of the shark to butcher a well-known saying!" She taps on the console yet again, trying to get sensors to respond, and then calls down to engineering "Engineering? I need sensors on-line immediately or sooner! We're unable to get even the most basic information about the size and shape of the fracture, what forces it's exerting, its temporal state, or anything helpful really without sensors, so please make this a top priority. I have secured authority from the XO that this is top priority so please contact her if you are unable to comply, otherwise get us our eyes back !!"

Hal Jordan watched as the computer displayed the loading sequence of the alien program. He had set up the console to translate the symbols with an overlay shell program and that was working well. The system seemed to be working, so he allowed it to continue. He looked back at the other part of his console that worked with the COMM system. He played the incoming signal over and over, cutting in filters and noise cancellation algorithms in an attempt to hear it more clearly. He turned to the XO. "Sir, the data we downloaded is indeed part of a computer program. It is loading on an independent part of my console that is isolated from other ship's systems. It appears that it might be fully loaded within 30 minutes or so. I am trying to clean up the noise on that signal we received, but so far the only thing I know is that it's a standard Federation distress signal. I hope it's not a Kobayashi Maru scenario."

Rieko looks to Hal, "Commodore, just make sure you do not let that program infect our ship systems with a virus. Science, try to get telemetry from the probes. Probe telemetry comes to us via the communications array. The Comms array may be working intermittently, it was earlier." She felt like there was nothing they could do until they gained control of the ship and ship systems.

Leni patches in the data from the responding probes into the enhancement routines cross referencing the ship's database to analyse the gravitational and magnetic fields in the space ahead along with all other detectable objects and forces and prepares to send the enhanced map over to helm calling out to Ensign Elton "Ensign, prepare to receive an enhanced map of the area ahead, which has the routes coded by danger/risk from red to green and all shades between, which hopefully will assist you in selecting and preparing the safest course. Sending to your station now." Smiles and whispers across "Paint it by numbers Helm," before looking back at the console waiting for Engineering to respond.

Jordan responded to the XO. "Yes, sir, the alien computer program is completely isolated from any ship's systems and the computer is constantly monitoring it for any possible breaches of the firewall. My PADD tricorder is powered down and unable to communicate with anything. If the program loaded to this console deletes itself somehow, the information will still be available on my tricorder for further analysis by Starfleet Intelligence."

Rieko: "Subspace fracture. A subspace fracture is a phenomenon which can be created as a byproduct of a polaric ion explosion, and which can allow for travel through time. Kathryn Janeway described them as 'fractures in time.' In 2371, the USS Voyager discovered a planet in the Delta Quadrant whose inhabitants had all died in a polaric ion explosion. Science, anything to add on subspace fractures, and how long before sensors are back online?" Raises an eyebrow at Commander Leni's comments to the Helm officer. Looks to Hal, "Good work Commodore."

Elton nods at Leni's instructions, "Receiving it now, thank you, although I fail to see the correlation between painting by numbers and this graphical chart." Starting to plot courses based upon the information, she's able to glean some information as it comes in. "Commander, we are now approximately eighty two thousand kilometers from the subspace fracture and appear to be moving at a rate of *consults her info* one thousand three hundred seven kilometers per second, .. no, forty eight. Our rate of closure is increasing and it may be exponentially, I will know more shortly."

Leni takes the much anticipated call from Engineering to report main sensors back on-line at 90% but Astrometrics still offline, at which she as discreetly as possible fist pumps just under the console with a muffled "YES!" before calmly and politely thanking the engineering team before tapping the console again and positively purring as the blaze of lights return to fill the distance between her and the console. She immediately and excitedly reports "Sir, main sensors back online, working on analysing the subspace fracture now, will have a full status momentarily!"

Jordan turned back to the COMM system and the corrupted distress signal. He again ran the signal through the system's high pass filters. This filtered out the lower audio frequencies and the booming sounds of the surrounding gas clouds. It also accentuated the hissing sound of galactic background noise and the crackling and popping of energy discharges in the cloud layers. He poised his finger over the replay button and closed his eyes, playing the signal over and over. He always thought he had better filters between his ears than any computer-assisted starship hardware, but this was straining even his talents. He was beginning to make progress, though. He turned to the XO. "So far I have been able to decipher these words from the signal. 'This is the (unintelligible), we need urgent help. Our location is (unintelligible) and we have struck an asteroid. Impulse and warp engines are out. (unintelligible) approaching fast, cannot avoid it. Please, we have (unintelligible) aboard and need help desperately.' I find it suspicious that the ship identification and its location and cargo were all obscured by bursts of static noise. We have no direction recorded for the signal, so if we were going to respond, we wouldn't know where to go anyway."

Rieko: "Thank you Ensign Elton." Exhales as she hears Commander Leni's report of main sensors back online. "Good work Commander Leni. She sits in her chair and taps her console. "Shields at 65 percent, hull integrity 90 percent. Do sensors detect any sign of that entity? What about the Romulan ships?" Looks to Intel, "That is strange about the distress message. Do you think it has some bearing on what is happening to us? We have to be concerned with getting out of this Nebula more than anything else. Its gravimetric pull is strong and we are getting closer to it with each passing minute."

Elton: As the main sensors come back online, her board immediately lights up with information as it floods over her console. "Sir, I can confirm, we are being pulled in towards the fracture, although prior readings from the probes were incorrect. We are currently seventy four thousand seven hundred, ninety two kilometers from the edge of the subspace fracture. I estimate forty seven point three minutes until we reach it."

Leni looks up from her console and "Sir, we now have a better picture of what's there. The fracture is larger than we first thought, around 500 kilometers, so first point we could fit through it easily. Looking at the data coming from it though, it's emitting both gravitational and magnetic fields that will play havoc with the ship if we get into them. They're extending some 3,000 kilometers radius from its centre, so we need to stay at least far enough away from those, or we may lose any choice about going into it or not. As for whether we should go through it, I would suggest we don't even consider that unless we already face unavoidable destruction as all other alternatives. I can also detect tachyons, so there is a very good chance some force, probably a polaric ion explosion, has rifted the fabric of space-time in such a way as to send us forward or even backwards in time. These are being emitted about 300 kilometers radius from the centre of the fracture."

Jordan saved the cleaned-up distress call and went back to active COMM monitoring. His console gave out a burst of noise and he quickly turned the volume down. There was no way that the weak distress signal could be heard now, through the massive amounts of interference. He looked at the XO. "Sir, our COMM systems will be useless for receiving any signals at all, this close to the subspace fracture. It's giving out so much noise that it is swamping all of our receivers, even subspace radio. If we will be mounting any kind of rescue attempt, we will first need to put some distance between us and that fracture."

Rieko: "Right, Commander Leni, we don't want to end up inside that subspace fracture. We don't want to travel through time again. We have experienced something similar before when Captain Hode was trapped in a holodeck program and the ship was caught in a subspace anomaly that caused a time loop. Helm, what percentage of Navigation is working? Let's see if we can move away from the fracture. The gravitational and magnetic pull Commander Leni mentioned will cause stress on the ship, but we have to resist the pull. We don't want to be pulled inside. Try to move back the way we came in. And Science, monitor the condition of the ship as we try to move." Looks to Hal. "Send out a distress signal? I don't think anyone can help us....maybe the entity..."

Elton: Fingers poised over the controls of her station, she's been waiting for the command to bring Impulse back online. If pressed she would never admit it, but she was feeling apprehensive about the ship being in this situation in the first place and at the first chance decides that she must talk to the Commander privately and the desire to even in our current situation, forces her to send a quick message to her Captain's chair that states "Commander, after the current situation, when the opportunity presents itself, I request to speak with you privately concerning my recent behavior." At the order to move, "Aye, bringing Impulse engines to one quarter impulse" and there is a very slight shudder that can almost but not quite be felt as the Durant responds.

Leni nods in agreement with the intelligence officer. "I couldn't agree more. The further we get away from that the better!" Continues to work on enhancing the graphical map of the whirls and eddies of danger in the path of the ship for help to plot the best course possible. Adding in now data from the working sensors, and including the danger fields from the fracture, making further clarity possible and setting it up to update automatically now the filters were stable and operating efficiently at high rates. Distracts herself for a moment and looks at the area we just came from and is somewhat surprised by what she sees. Verifying it first before alerting the XO "Sir, our 'whaley' friend seems to be resuming its interest in its lost toy and is heading this way at a hell of a speed!" Taps again into the console before continuing "15 minutes! If we both maintain current speeds and we could find ourselves back where we started! I suggest if we're going to put distance between the fracture and us we also plot a course that puts it between us and the whale too! Preferably also out of this dreadful nebula!"

Jordan looked at the mysterious computer program that was still loading, and then at the array of COMM system receivers. A thought occurred to him. What if the program in his PADD was the origin of the distress signal? It could be that the PADD signal had been reflected back from the clouds in the drift. He wondered whether the clouds would reflect signals at all. In any other situation he would send out a ping and see if it could be heard bouncing back, but with possible Romulan ships on their tail, transmitting was not worth the risk of detection. He looked back to the computer program, then turned to the XO. "Sir, the alien computer program appears to be fully loaded and operational on this console. It consists of a menu system with several icons and descriptions in several different languages. There is a search function, a START button and an EXIT button, and several other menu items that could be labeled with misdirection as booby traps. I would like to get one of our Romulan language linguists to look at this setup and offer advice about which choices might be a bad idea."

Rieko: "Good work Cmdr Leni! Send the data you have to Ensign Elton! Keep your eye on that entity. I'm plotting a course out of this nebula." She taps her console, getting the reports from Science, Tactical, and Engineering, .scanning them. Helm, plot a course, 251 mark 35. That should bring us out of this nebula. Ops, monitor the structural integrity of the ship. Let's go...Do it!"
