USS TAYLORHOLIC DURANT
NCC 780304
LUNA CLASS
===========

Captain's Log, Stardate 181121.1145: After decades of silence, Starfleet Command has been contacted by the Bynar. Apparently they created a kind of 'hive ship' in order to send a colonists from Bynaus to the Delta Quadrant for settlement. It was felt that having all the Bynar on one planet connected to one planetary computer was risky, especially since a supernova in the Bynar system affected their master computer in 2364. The USS Taylorholic Durant has been assigned to escort the hive vessel from the Khittomer Wormhole to a currently unoccupied planet in the Maraynia Sector. This planet is deep in the Nekrit Expanse however the Bynar feel this will help shield them from outside interference. As we have just left the S'Raris Sector it will take us some time to cross the 150 light years between ourselves and the Wormhole. A good test of our systems after our delay here. Hode out.

RP NARRATIVE
=============

James T. Hode sat at the briefing table with a cup of steaming tea, he had a pile of PADDs in front of him. He was expecting to be joined by two officers... his forehead creased as he tried to remember what he had planned for the day. Not a good time for his yeoman to be ill and need time off. He raised his cup to his lips as he checked the time and spilled a drop of hot tea on the table, 'darn and blast,' he said, reacting to the spill by quickly moving the cup, which caused more hot tea to splash on his hand. He dropped the cup back into the saucer and swore under his breath, dabbing at the table with a napkin.

Leni looks positively excited at the suggestion of meeting Bynars. Computing was a fascinating aspect of science and the chance to talk to a species was way ahead of our own technology, especially one so secretive was so rare this was a chance not to be passed up! The captain was looking to the trip as an opportunity to give the systems a thorough shake down, and to that end prepared and initiated a full diagnostic on the primary and backup systems. In what little spare time she had between that and normal duties she was composing a greeting to the guests in Bynar which was a challenge in itself. Suddenly remembering something and asking Hal closeby "Oh Sir are we supposed to be in a briefing with the Captain about now?"Picks up her PADD and heads over towards the briefing room.

Hal Jordan enters the Ready Room, thinking about what he has heard already. He knows of the Bynars, of course, but had never met one, since they were native to the Alpha Quadrant. This should be interesting! "Greetings!" he says, cheerily, as he takes a seat at the table near the Captain. "And yes we are," he smiles at Leni.

Hode had taken the liberty of replicating tea for the two who would be meeting with him today. He checks the PADD. Yes, yes. Of course, Hal. He frowned slightly. The one who had made a mess of his afternoon tea with the crew on his birthday. He was glad he had decided to serve only a beverage. He looked down at the mess he'd made himself and nodded to himself, he should not be so quick to judge someone else. The chap was probably nervous. The other... for science... was a junior officer, Leninah. She was a font of information. As the two come in the room, he stands up in courtesy. "Hello, please take a seat. Help yourself to tea," he nods.

Leni smiles back at Hal wondering what was making him so cheerful all of a sudden as she takes a seat not waiting for permission and worrying about that for a moment, standing only to take her seat after the captain invited her. Oh well there are worse things than that and at least she wasn't a vampire or anything. Looking around the table for biscuits but settling for the nice cup of tea.

Jordan says "Thank you, Captain," while reaching for the tea service in a careful, controlled motion. He is determined not to spill a drop anywhere today, and so far he hadn't. But now he would have to pick up the teapot! He shakes his head with a bit of annoyance and just pours the tea into his cup. Taking a sip, he starts to understand why the Captain enjoys tea so much. "This is delicious. What kind of tea is it?"

Hode "That is Oolong," he smiles, refilling his own cup. He draws in a breath to begin the briefing. "Thank you for joining me. As you may have heard we are assigned to escort and assist (if indeed there is any assistance we could give) the Bynar to deliver their colonists to Maraynia Sector. I find it interesting they have chosen to diversify their holdings, as it were. I will be asking you to assess the tactical and scientific concerns for this mission. Perhaps you can start with a short summary of your departmental thoughts so far."

Leni sips her tea but can't help thinking how nice a rich tea biscuit would go with this, or a digestive even! OOooh and what she would give for a chocolate Hob Nob ! Listens to the chatter between the Captain and the Lt Cmdr as she checks her PADD for any updates to the diagnostics results and starting to give some thoughts to the issues she could anticipate.

Jordan pulls out a PADD and stores the Oolong tea information in his personal file for later. The blue periwinkle tea set looks nice too, but it also looks breakable, so he decides not to replicate one for himself. He switches screens on the PADD, referencing information about the Bynar civilization. "Starfleet employs Bynar citizens, who work in pairs, to upgrade starship computers. I believe we may want to lock down access to the ship's computer in case they decide to do some in-flight upgrades."

Hode "If we invite any Bynar on board that might be a good plan," he says, "I will be asking Engineering to assess the design and construct of the Bynar ship and its capacity to traverse the Nekrit Expanse in order to reach its new home. I assume the Bynar have anticipated the difficulties of navigation in the Expanse, as they are of course consummate scientists, however, given their lack of experience with that area of the Delta Quadrant, they may not realize the profound impact travel in the Expanse can have both on ship systems and personnel." He recalls the issues Durant has had and the memory is unwelcome.

Leni: "Sir there aren't any issues that we haven't come across before on this sort of a journey, notwithstanding the unexpected of course and as you say the nature of the expanse. The behaviour of the Khittomer wormhole is always a bit of a variable but we have that in hand. The Lt Cmdr is correct there have been some issues with the Bynar before, surprisingly there are quite a few instances of recorded interaction, for a species that preferred to keep to themselves, going back quite a while. Also a number of previous cases where the Bynar have indeed upgraded Federation technology, Starbase 74 was a good example… yes well maybe the hijacking of the Enterprise wasn't a great ending, bad example …. the upgrade to the Enterprise D's holodeck was however more successful, if maybe with unexpected results, but that was surely user error!" Pauses for a moment's comparative thought Riker – Minuet, Hal – Drinks Dispenser? hmmmmm definite similarities there, technology can easily be used for purposes other than intended for sure! "Anyway my point is whilst we can take precautions I would hate for us to damage the chance of learning from the Bynars while with us by overtly locking them out of our computers, which to be frank, they could probably bypass anyway without us even knowing!"

Jordan reads more about the Bynars from Starfleet database records. "From what I'm seeing here, I'm actually surprised that the Bynars have taken this long to make this move. Everything about their civilization is binary. They work in pairs, and one Bynar looks nearly the same as the other, but one always has certain attachments and physical features on the opposite side from the other. So the idea that they would have only a single planetary computer system is completely out of character for them. They need a truly dual computer system to be complete. I am a bit concerned about them being out of touch with their main computer in the Alpha Quadrant although I assume that they have a smaller version of it on board their ship."

Hode sips his tea while waiting for the intel and science reports, adjusting one of the PADDs to show their probable course in the days ahead. He looks to Leninah: "I see your point but it behooves us to do our best to restrict their access if possible. I am sure neither Admiral Toocool or Starfleet Command would appreciate the Bynar accessing our computers to tinker with them without our consent. Perhaps the fact they have asked for our assistance, and that this assistance might be removed should they 'misbehave' might be enough for them to control their urge to 'fix' things. That is a good point, Mr Jordan. I had not thought of the lack of duality with regard to their master computer. They certainly must have some similar technology aboard their vessel." He sits back for a moment. "Do you suppose that is why they have asked for a Starfleet escort? Would that technology be of interest to others in the Delta Quadrant?"

Leni Hearing the Lt Cmdr's worry about the connection maintained by the Bynar to their main computer and his working assumption echoed by the captain nodding her head "Yes Sirs that would be entirely probable especially as the reason for colonising the new planet here in the Delta quadrant is to avoid losing the one computer. I would expect they have a working copy of the main computer with them to install as a live backup to the main on Bynar." Hears the concern about the Bynar accessing our computer and agrees with the Captain. "I think Sir you are correct in relying on other means of persuasion for the Bynar to not misbehave than physical security. Whatever we do has to be effective or its just not worth doing" Looks back at the Lt Cmdr and waves a finger pointing to the cup before him indication drips.

Jordan reads more about the Bynars' history, and a frown comes to his face. "The Bynars were involved in that famous incident where they took over the computer on the USS Enterprise-D. Maybe I'm worrying too much about what happened in the past, but it could be that as they travel across the Nekrit Expanse and are only connected to their single computer, that could look like a liability to them. Durant's ship computer might seem like an attractive 'other half' for their computer. I think it's important that our computer remains completely inaccessible to them. Unless, of course, you wish to grant them access." He looks where Leni is pointing and quickly levels his cup before it can spill its contents on the table.

Hode had been rather dubious about this briefing but now he was interested. Hal brought up a perspective he had not considered when reading the brief. In fact he began to wonder if the Bynar ship would reflect their duality, and have two Captains. He had not considered that. "Mr Leninah, what kind of power source would the Bynar be using for their computer... I would assume they have backups aboard their vessel but it might be good for us to also be able to provide a backup if needed." He looks to Hal, nodding. "I see your point. Unless they are bringing two identical ships, one acting as backup to the other... the Durant might be seen as the corresponding twin. I suggest then they should not be allowed to board the flagship. That will perhaps assist the stewards, who were at a loss to know what to serve for an official welcome reception," a smile crosses his face.

Leni Raises an eyebrow in the Lt CMdr's direction "Sir why would the Bynar a species far more advanced in computer technology than the Federation have any interest at all in one of our computers? I don't think we need to worry about that at all and as I already suggested its highly probable, they have with them a fully working copy of the main computer to set up as the live backup, that is the whole point of their mission here is not not?" Takes a sip of tea neatly and with minimal risk of spillage smiling at the Lt Cmdr until she hears the captain's suggestion we deny the Bynar from boarding the Durant upon which she almost chokes and looks up with alarm at the captain "Sir that would really, if I may say so, be risking insulting the Bynar for no justifiable reason!. They almost certainly have a copy for the very reasons you are assum8ng they would need one. None of our technology would even interface with a Bynar computer anyway the protocols are just way different."

Jordan drains his cup in one long sip and places it back into its saucer, placing both back on the tea tray. If he drops the PADD on the table, at least it won't splatter everywhere. "I could be totally wrong about pairing their ship with our computer. In fact, it makes sense that they would already have it paired with the main computer on their home planet. They will lose that connection when they enter the Nekrit Expanse, though. I can't think of what they would want us for if not to use our computer. Maybe they think we could help them communicate with their main computer back on Bynaus."

Hode looks to Leni, "I do think the Commander's caution is warranted as the Bynar wished to use the Enterprise computer as a backup. In this case, given their tendency to have 'pairs' of things, I would rather be careful than find we have had an unexpected incursion. However I do agree with you, Mr Leninah, that we should wait and see what exactly they have brought with them." He puts down his empty cup. "If they are expecting to remain in contact with their master computer on Bynaus, they are going to run into trouble. We cannot assist with that. We know about the effects we can anticipate in the Nekrit Expanse. The pressures and mass of the gas and debris profoundly impact ship's systems. Navigation is bound to be affected, as is communications. If the Bynar are expecting us to show them the way, or maintain contact with the 'outside world', as it were, it might be a case of the blind leading the blind."

Leni looks directly at the Captain "Sir think of it like this. When they left the Bynaus system they downloaded the computer onto the one they are bringing for the delta quadrant. They would therefore use that for connection purposes. The only thing they will lose is any updates made between them leaving the alpha quadrant and arriving at the target site that were not possible to send via subspace comms. That would be rectified shortly after arriving I'm sure. Therefore they have no need to ‘borrow' or ‘pair up' with any of our technology that they wouldn't even be able to make any use of. Our computers simply aren't capable of direct connectivity with a Bynar computer. I agree caution is required but it has to be reasonable and considerate of not upsetting the Bynar unduly surely Sir?"

Jordan reads more about Bynar history from the PADD. "One of the tactics they used on the Enterprise-D was to create a character on the holodeck that would hold the attention of the First Officer while they worked on the ship's computer. If they try some sort of subterfuge with us, we could probably expect the same type of tactic from them. So even if we do restrict outside access to the ship's computer during the voyage, I would suggest that we should also shut down the holodecks for the duration of the trip. It's not an attractive Starfleet attribute to be so distrustful of a confirmed ally, but in this particular case I think the concern is warranted."

Hode tries not to think about having to go into the Nekrit Expanse again. The fact that it was so close to Pinastri just made it a given that many of their assignments would take them into the Expanse. There were populated planets within it as well as Starfleet facilities and starbases... it was part of the job and he had to get over his... trepidation. He nods to Leni, "Any kind of 'restriction' would never be overt, Lieutenant. We would simply be cautious and if anything needed to be said, it would be diplomatic... unless they give us cause for concern." He nods to Hal, "Once we rendezvous with the Bynar vessel let's make that so. But I think both of you are missing the other probability here. The technology of the Bynar is advanced. If they have what is likely to be a mirror copy of their master computer, I suspect there are hostile factions in the Delta Quadrant (and beyond) who would very much like to get their hands on it."

Leni Wonders to herself if she's letting her desire to meet and share knowledge with this species get in the way of her objectivity. Ponders that for a while before forming a firm conviction what she is saying is right. In the face however of both the captain and the Lt CMdr having a different view decides maybe having stated her view to leave the decision to the commanding officers. They were informed of the scientific nature of the situation she had made sure of that but the decision was in their hands. Looks straight at Lt Cmdr Jordan "Are you being serious Sir? Minuet was not an attack by the Bynar it was something Riker abused and re-purposed for something it wasn't intended for! I can't say I'm surprised you're defending him on that score" the last remark slipping out of her mouth before she could stop it "Sir apologies I didn't mean to be insubordinate its just that what you're saying is equivalent to blaming the designer of a bread knife for its use in a murder" Looks back at the Captain, "Yes Sir I think that is a far more realistic concern that someone else would like to steal Bynar technology and maybe the reason they want an escort from this region?"

Jordan accesses Starfleet Intelligence files from the PADD, inputting his Intel encryption keycode. "That's true, Captain. Several groups here in this quadrant would love to get their hands on some Bynar technology, or even kidnap a ship full of Bynars for their own use. But Intel does have something up its sleeve, so to speak, that could give us an advantage. We have learned how to decipher Bynar speech, and our universal translators are now programmed to do just that. In the past, the Bynars would talk among themselves and we had no way to know what they were saying. Those days are over." He looks at Leni. "The historical record shows that Commander Riker believed that the Minuet character was being used as a diversion to draw his attention away from what was going on. He said himself that he had been distracted. So that was not a conclusion that I manufactured on my own."

Hode frowns to Leninah: "Please stay calm. All points of view are welcome in a briefing, for the most part. Alternate perspectives are expected and encouraged so we can think of all possible angles before coming to a decision. Try not to take thoughts shared personally," he said gently. He nods to Hal: "Given their superior computing ability, any algorithms we are using in translating their speech may be fast out-paced." He pauses a moment: "I am musing over the possibility of using several probes located along our projected route as a means to ensure we can maintain contact between the Bynar vessel and ourselves, and Starfleet Command. However, that begs the question, would we then be giving away our position to anyone aspiring to take the Bynar vessel or its contents."

Leni braces herself and pauses for calm nodding gratefully to the captain before retorting to the Lt Cmdr "Two things Sir I believe you are mis-interpreting. Firstly what Riker believed was not what the Bynars intended. Any more than the bread knife yielding murderer has any come back on the knife designers. Secondly you cannot eavesdrop on the personal communications between the Bynars that surely breaks Starfleet protocols and principles of respect and decency? I must protest if you are seriously proposing to do that Sir, it would be my duty as a Starfleet officer to do so"

Jordan listens to the Captain's idea about probes. "It's hard to know what's best when we aren't even sure what the Bynars want yet. But I do agree that the more communications noise we make, the more likely it is that someone might come to investigate what it's all about." He listens to Leni's concerns. "What we're doing would not be eavesdropping, any more than if we learned how to speak in Bynar ourselves. They are using open verbal communications that anyone can hear. They have to know that someone was going to be able to interpret it eventually. Our computer processors just weren't fast enough in the past, but they are now. If it makes any difference, the Captain could inform them that we are decoding all of their speech, so they aren't surprised by our new capabilities."

Hode frowns at the rather combative nature of demonstrated by the junior officer. He supposed he was just as passionate when he was a young lieutenant j.g. himself. He opens his mouth to scold her and then closes it again. After a moment he says: "The purpose of a briefing is to provide the Captain with all available information that might pertain to our mission. Those details, thoughts and suggestions are put to the commanding officer, who then decides what action to take. It seems to me our 'intel' is incomplete as the Bynar have not provided us with sufficient information about their hive ship. I will endevour to obtain those details. In the meantime, I want both departments to look into the possibility of using that translation ability for good. If we can speak to the Bynar in their own language, it's doubtful anyone else can. And that might assist us to keep them safe, what?"
