(Durant) TDRPMT020: "In the Shadows" (181030)

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

RP NARRATIVE
=============

Zania Turner beams down to Stygian Prime and looks around before looking back at her team. The area was dark and very eerie, almost as if very foreboding. They didn't have enough to split up into teams, but they still had a lot of ground to cover. "Keep tricorder use to an absolute minimum and only use it discretely. We don't know their level of technology. We should treat this like a first contact mission."

Dominik Landy materializes on a dark wooden platform in a dark wooded area. Nearby stands a dark hooded statue with glowing red eyes. He retrieves his tricorder and covertly scans it, finding nothing more complex than a battery-powered pair of light emitters. Turner and Godard stand nearby, safely beamed down also. On the other side of the platform is a contrivance with what appears to be an eyeball at the end. It moves with them, apparently scanning. He hides the tricorder behind his body from the object.

Slash Godard studies the eyeball. This appears to be set up like a telescope... a scanner? Yet there is steam coming from it. This indicates a low level of technology. Low level perhaps. But the scope follows me as I walk around it, so this civilization obviously has sensor technology. We'll need to be very careful about how much of our own gadgets we reveal.

Turner nodded and looked at the others. "Let's take a closer look at it and see what we can find out," she suggested as she moved around toward the rear of the eye, but also noticed how it followed Godard.

Landy walks around the platform, looking at its construction. Dark wood, seemingly hundreds of years old, encrusted with moss and lichen. It was slightly reflective, as though grease glistened on its surface. He decided not to touch it to see how slippery it was. He observes the eye from a short distance, noting how it follows the closest life form. Noting a set of stairs carved into the hillside behind Turner, he wondered if that's where the receiving station was located.

Godard slowly goes up the steps, listening. It's relatively dark here and sounds can tell me more that sights at this point.

Turner follows the others up the stairs, hoping that the eye was not an early warning device for the residents of the planet. "We should be careful. No way of telling who or what was responsible for that and if they may be a threat to us."

Landy follows Godard up the steps, using the height at the top to look around the area. On the other side of a foggy swamp sit several primitive buildings, seemingly made of the same dark wood as the platform. The only spot of color in the area is a bright fire, with a possible danger. "It appears that there are life forms near the fire over there. I don't believe they have noticed us yet."

Godard: From the top of the hill Godard can see another set of stairs. These lead into a hollow and in that hollow is a campfire circled by seats. That fire hasn't been burning long as the logs are still intact. Perhaps there are people around.

Turner noticed where Godard was heading and looked to Landy. "Looks like a good place to start exploring, and perhaps it might provide a clue. Considering this place, we should all stick together."

Landy stands beside Turner at the top of the hill, watching as Godard walks down the path into what appears to be an abandoned camp. Logs and stumps surround a small campfire. So far, the only fog he had spotted looked natural, but there did seem to be a strange darkness over the land, under a bright blue sky. Very odd. As Godard comes back to the top of the hill, he asks a question, not totally in jest. "So, see any walking skeletons down there?" He notices a fast moving object in his peripheral vision, but when he turns to look, it is gone.

Godard: Looking up from the campfire, Godard is briefly startled by a fierce-looking face. Two faces, about 2 meters tall. It doesn't look like a statue... it has gears, so- some kind of a machine? Godard sees no way to activate the machine.

Turner looks around at the bottom near the campfire and spots what looks like a face. Immediately, she gasps since it startled her and didn't seem natural . . . or at least based on what she perceived to be natural. "What is that?" she asked the others.

Landy watches Turner and Godard descend into the camp, and flanks them to the left along the wall of the little valley. He hears a strange sound to his left, and when he stops to look in that direction he sees something remarkable. Quickly he taps his combadge. "There is a stone tower on this side with some kind of glow at the top that does not look natural. I am also hearing cries or screams in the distance." He kneels down and activates his tricorder, shielding it from view under his open coat. Scan results are inconclusive.

Godard: This campfire area reminds Godard of what is called a grove in ancient cultures. A place of worship perhaps? No matter, there is nothing beyond the faces but ocean. Godard turns and follows Landy up the hill.

Turner follows the others up the hill, seeing the glow from the tower beyond. "We should try to head there. The height may help give us a better perspective."

Landy watches as a humanoid figure walks past them, seemingly not noticing their presence. He follows Turner and Godard to the base of a set of rickety stairs near the tower, and just as they arrive, the figure walks down the stairs and ascends again, still not reacting to them. He turns to the other two and raises an eyebrow. "Well isn't this strange?"

Godard: The stairs to the tower look rickety, but compelling. Godard also hears the screams now but they seem to be coming from beyond the tower. This tower itself, looks like an ancient lighthouse. He cautiously starts up the stairway

Turner followed the others up the stairs, but couldn't help but to notice the woman that had walked by them without even noticing their presence. "Let's see if we can get a tricorder reading. Was she even real or some kind of an apparition?"

Landy climbs the stairs after Godard and stops to open a door in the side of the tower. Inside is what appears to be a primitive living area, with books and candles and chairs and a humanoid skull. Climbing the steps to the loft, he discovers a skeleton, another skull, and what appears to be a messily-murdered humanoid. "There's a dead body here inside the tower," he whispers into his combadge.

Godard acknowledges Landy and notes that the screams of a woman in torment are coming from the east. South of the tower, however is an amazing sight. A phantom sailing ship... looks like 18th century earth. It's a square-rigger and Godard can see through the sails as if they were transparent. The ship is obviously beached on the rocks below!

Turner hears what Landy shared and frowned a bit. "Can you tell how they died?" She then turned to see if she could find Godard, relieved that he wasn't too far away.

Landy exits the tower to stand beside Turner outside the door. The sounds are louder here, cries of agony and alarm. Or maybe it was the mating call of whatever passed for a fuzzy bunny on this planet. Impossible to tell without further investigation, but at least no self-propelled skeletons had been seen yet. "Whoever or whatever killed the person inside the tower could be nearby. There was a lot of blood, but I did not see the cause of death. I would suggest a cautious defensive posture." He withdraws a phaser from his coat pocket and checks the charge again. Still at full power, good. Suddenly two humanoids walk past the team without saying a word, open the door, and enter the tower. He wondered if the team members were "out of phase" with the inhabitants here. "Next time someone comes close, maybe we should greet them to see what happens."

Godard noticed the two. Perhaps they were indigenous to this area. Perhaps our disguise was so good that they thought nothing of our presence. Still, there was a phantom sailing ship to the south and screams coming from the north. Godard considers wading through the murky water to the other side of this lagoon, hoping there were no carnivorous fish in that water.

Turner nodded to Landy and then noticed a couple emerge from the tower. She gave a quick nod to the others, hoping they managed to get a reading before noticing the ship . . . which seemed to occasionally disappear. "We should check that out."

Landy watches Godard as he descends the steps and walks to the end of the pier. If he was planning to cross the swamp, it would be good to have a phaser marksman like Landy watching until he reached the other bank. He taps his combadge and whispers into it. "I'll cover you while you cross, if that's what you're planning."

Godard replies: Thanks for the overwatch. I just saw one of the locals cross the water and he didn't get eaten by anything, so... here I go. On the other side of the lagoon Godard sees another dead body floating in the water. This one has been dead for some time, it's gray and beginning to decompose. Other than that, it appears to be safe to cross the water.

Turner frowned slightly, not at all liking the idea of Godard heading off across the bog by himself, even though Landy was going to keep an eye on him. "Splitting up isn't a good idea here . . . especially with the dead bodies. We don't know who or what was responsible for their deaths, and I wouldn't want any of us to meet the same fate."

Landy had also noticed the couple who left the tower room and crossed the water without incident. But he still held his breath, with tricorder in one hand and phaser in the other, until Godard reached the far bank. He walked to the end of the same pier and looked across the water. It smelled like death, and he was not happy about the idea of wading through it. Then Turner mentioned not splitting up, and he breathed a sigh of not-getting-wet relief. "Okay, I will stand here and make sure no corpses climb out of the water. I am still not seeing any walking skeletons or other threats."

Godard, still standing knee-deep in the water looks up at a deck. There appear to be animated skeletons there. Oh, this is crazy! They are playing musical instruments. Must be the local entertainment, or a band from long ago... reanimated.

Turner looks across the lagoon and sees what looks like a statue of an armored snake sticking up out of the water and wrapped around something. She looked at the others and asked, "What do you two think? Should we continue to explore and determine what happened with the deceased, or should we return to the Durant before something happens to us?"

Landy looks around and seeing no one nearby, pulls out his tricorder and scans the humanoids across the swamp near the fire. He was so surprised at the results that he showed them to the other two. "Look at this scan of the individuals around that campfire. For a few seconds they read as life forms, and then suddenly they are dead bodies. And not all at once, either. It appears that their life force flickers on and off individually. So it's not a tricorder malfunction as far as I can see. I believe it would be a fine idea to head on back to the good old Durant before our life force starts flickering on and off too. We would never hear the end of it from the Doc!"

Godard cradling his tricorder in his arm, out of sight, Godard aims it at the phantom ship. A clue! Emanating from the ship is evidence of a temporal rift. Events that occurred 200 years ago are spilling into this reality. He agrees with Turner and Landry... the Durant sounds pretty inviting now.

Turner nodded to Landy and Godard. "Let's find a concealed place where we can beam out then without drawing attention to ourselves. This'll give us a chance to analyze what we've found and hopefully find out more about this strange planet."

Landy listens to Godard's report and starts nodding his head. "That makes a lot of sense. Any time there's something strange in the neighborhood, when there's something bad and it doesn't look good, you can be sure that chronitons are involved somehow. Probably all the screaming and blood and dead bodies and fluctuating life form readings actually happened hundreds of years in the past."
