USS TAYLORHOLIC DURANT
NCC 780304
LUNA CLASS
===========

Preamble: The USS Durant, having completed its mission to Sireny, is now due to return to Pinastri for resupply and crew exchange. As it will be some days before arrival, the Captain has ordered each department to undergo various diagnostics and inspections. On top of this, unscheduled drills have been occurring at various times during duty shifts, waking those off duty and making those on duty scramble. Perhaps everyone breathes a little sigh of relief when Science reports an anomaly at extreme sensor range. Maybe that will keep the Captain occupied for an hour. One can only hope.

RP NARRATIVE
=============

Hal Jordan walks around the bridge, looking at the different stations. Nothing seemed to be amiss or malfunctioning which was good. Everyone was exhausted from all the drills the Captain had ordered, and the Captain himself was taking a break. 'Gave me the bridge,' he thinks, 'best to start out normally.' "Good evening and welcome to the night shift. There are no drills scheduled during this shift so we should have an easy time of it. All stations report status, please."

Pleasure Hopkins taps a few more buttons, locking firmly into Warp 7 "Secure at warp 7, Sir, 285, Mark Zero. All systems are normal"

Leni *Yawns* and covers her mouth quickly. That must have been the fifth this hour! The surprise drills certainly keeping boredom at bay but at the cost of precious sleeeeeeeeep! Looks around hoping no-one has noticed, flashing a friendly alert smile at anyone who’s glance she catches. The bleep on the console drawing her gaze back to work as the latest diagnostic reports complete no faults found and no recommendations. Frowning as if it’s become a personal challenge now to find a fault! Scheduling the next raft of diagnostic programs and starting them off with fingers that flash over the smooth surface of the brightly coloured icons deftly and smartly. Settling back and idly having a look at long range scanners again cause it’s been a whole hour since they were properly studied, maybe, just maybe they might possibly have developed a fault in that time! The idea stirring her into a more determined action as she scans at maximum range. “All systems in order Sir nothing to report so far”

Rhys Careli Axel looks over the reports he got from sickbay, seeing as the crew is more than tired enough of all the drills that has been going on lately. "Sickbay got a few crew members who are ill. But nothing major to report from Sickbay at this time."

Jynx Stardust steps up to the tactical console proudly. It's rare that this station is available for assignment so when she heard it would be, she quickly got herself assigned to it. Sure, being security aboard a ship is a rewarding experience, but everyone wants to be the one on the bridge. She was tired as we've been running drills like crazy lately, but she couldn't pass up this chance. Of course she realizes that they're just heading home and the likelihood of actually getting to do anything meaningful was slim, she was still on the bridge! Her fingers dance across the console as she logs in and checks statuses. Ah, the brawl on Deck 6, she was one of the officers who had to break that up. Ensigns Mahlow and Wright. It's rare that a catfight actually involves a Cait, in this case, it did. She snaps herself back to her surroundings again, "Sir, all systems available and no current security incidents to report!", she announces proudly.

Sonata sits down at the INtel console, looking over all the information that's currently showing before speaking up. "All appears to be normal for now, Sir. No signs of anything less than routine." She moves her fingers over the keys, beginning a through search for anything out of the ordinary.

James T. Hode sips his tea. A good brew. The water had been properly boiled this time. Every so often, he had his yeoman prepare tea from home. Good old English breakfast, leaves carefully measured into pre-warmed pot, *boiling* water poured over them, left to steep under a snug cosy, then strained through his own personal tea strainer from home into a delicate china cup. He closed his eyes, savoring the taste of home. The atmosphere on the ship was chilly, to say the least. But he happened to know a certain Admiral planned a visit aboard when they arrived. He wanted everything shipshape for her. And for him. He wanted to give his report to her with confidence, knowing every inch of the ship had been inspected and every crew member knew their job.

Jordan smiles while wobbling a bit on his feet. Was something wrong with the grav plate? It could be just the fatigue from the constant drills and maintenance. He hopes that this will be a light and uneventful shift. "Thank you, everyone. Let's stay sharp and not put any scratches on the paint so we can give the Captain back his ship in good shape. This is a sector full of pretty much nothing, but only one sector separates us from Borg space so we never know what might happen. It's too bad we are prohibited by regulations from singing sea shanties on the bridge while on duty."

Hopkins continues plotting the journey home, Scanning for other ships. "Perhaps they would come across another Unknown ship, and Investigate!" She thought to herself. As her first Mission, that would be an unbelievable coincidence! Glancing over to the Commander, she queries "Sir, Did we install the new software into the Engine system? I've been working out some new evasive maneuvers, and don't want to overload them"

Leni casually flicks on from one sub-sector report to another then … wait …flicks back …..Leni scrunches her eyes and blinks a few times just to make sure the photo images are real and not cause by the imagination wanting to see something different, but, no …. That IS something different! Sitting bolt upright she draws the focus in deeper and zooms up against the object now appearing quite definitely on her screen. No more than an organgey coloured echo at the moment, and these scanners are at the max. Pulling up another portal into the Astrometrics systems thinking those systems being more powerful and dedicated at long distance image resolution may verify and clarify if and what this is. Considers for a moment notifying the commander but instead calls over to helm “Cadet Hopkins please check if you can see anything unusual on long range sensors at bearing 271 Mark 15 about 20ly out, I’m sending over to your station, can you verify you detect it too or whether I’m starting to hallucinate from lack of sleep!”

Axel looks over more of the reports that are coming in about exhausted crew members feeling very ill and is put off duty for the evening to get rest. Starts to think "Also doing maintenance when in a unknown part of space too, it should not be done. We all should be ready and rested, not working all hours of the day to push the humanoids to a breaking point, just to please Captain Hode. Maybe it would be wise to use my medical orders to get people well again?" Jumps back to reality and looks around the bridge before digging himself into his reports again and hears what is being said around him.

Stardust notices that the port aft shield grid keeps dropping 97% then climbs back to 100%. Perhaps the constant drills had caused some issues with it, she'll keep an eye on it and request an engineering team check it out if it continues. Hearing the XO speak, she's a little surprised. Sure, she'd heard some of the stories about the silliness that happens on the bridge, but they were just stories... weren't they? She can't really tell if he was joking or not, but she finally find herself relieved there is actually a regulation against singing sea shanties on the bridge.

Sonata found the anti sea shanty regulation to be ridiculous, but said nothing about that. She continued to monitor the systems she had access to, a sharp eye on the lookout for anything out of place. "Sir, is there a regulation against poetry..?" She wonders, genuinely curious.

Hode looked down at the PADDs on his desk. Reports from every department. He'd been through them all once and had made some notes to discuss with the Chiefs at the next breakfast meeting - he'd certainly kept with Toocool's tradition of briefing the chiefs once a week at least, but he hoped the chiefs were happy that he'd changed the time from oh-six-thirty to a more palatable oh-nine-hundred. He picks up the last PADD he was reviewing, frowing as he read the report from Engineering. "Transporters are offline?" he mutters to himself. "Well they best get that fixed or we'll have a dog's breakfast on our hands." He taps away on his computer, accessing recent diagnostics and systems reports with regard to the transporters.

Jordan smiles at the Flight Control Officer, all prepared and eager to implement new protocols. "We can check to see if recent maintenance included new engine software. For now, let's not test new maneuvers in flight, rather let's do things on the holodeck first." Hearing the Science station's report, he starts to worry a bit, hoping they don't really scratch the paint during the watch. And Ensign Sonata's question deserved a good answer. "Ensign, regulations do not permit non-duty-related reading material or discussion on the bridge while on duty. We have some leeway there, but if it gets too extreme, it can affect readiness." He walks up to the Helm station. "Helm, reduce to warp 2 and set course 271 mark 15. Let's see what's out there. Sorry, continue at warp 7, not warp 2."

Hopkins nods, receiving the data and inputting it to her screen "Checking long range sensors, 271, Mark 15, affirmative"" Adjusting her scans for 20 Light years, she sees a faint sign of something.. It's too far out to get a definite idea, but there is something there "Sensors detect something, Sir, but it's impossible to tell what it is from this extreme range"

Leni: Relief evident in her response to helm, even if it does disrupt her humming of ‘What shall we do with a drunken sailor’ for some inexplicable reason “Thanks Cadet Hopkins I’ll have a better idea in a moment about what it may be when the astrometrics scanners report but glad I’m not seeing things!” Now happy there is something there duly reports to the Commander who probably overheard the conversation anyway but to stick to protocol “Commander, detecting something, which at this point we have to call an anomaly until we can see more, just in the next sector at the maximum edge of our long-range scanners about 20ly out from us bearing 271 Mark 15. Running the coordinates through Astrometrics to try and identify further and will keep you posted Sir”

Axel hears what is going on and hopes the maintenance is done so everything works as it should if anything should happen, since environmental conditions should be at optimal when out in the unknown, especially when there is unknown things out there.

Stardust watches the port aft shield grid for a while and doesn't see it drop again, 'good, perhaps it was just a glitch', she thinks to herself. The excitement of being on the bridge starting to wane a bit, as she realizes that a lot of it is just standing here waiting to see if anything pops up on scanners. Hearing the others detecting something on long range sensors she eagerly watches her scanner to see what it might be? Could it be a threat? Her tactical training sneaking into her thoughts.

Sonata nods to the XO, chirping out an "Aye, Sir. Thank you, Sir." Before her ears metaphorically perk up at the mention of something far off in the scanners. She looks down, watching intently to see just what it might be. So far, this was the most interesting thing all shift.

Hode finishes up his tea, continuing to write his queries for Engineering, deciding he and the chief need to have a few words, and soon.

Jordan considers how he countermanded his own order. At warp 2 it would have taken far too long to get to a place where they could do short range scans of whatever was out there. He had better be more diligent with his commands from now on. "Very well, Helm. As we approach the area let's use all of our sensors to determine exactly what we've found. Suspend all maintenance in progress and button up any open systems. Ops, please divert as much power to sensors as you can spare."

Hopkins continues scanning ahead, keeping an eye on the distance traveled. "Anomaly directly ahead, Sir, No change in status. Fifteen minutes to Anomaly.. Switching to close range sensors to see what we can detect" She is also thinking in the back of her mind about evasive maneuvers, and what she could come up with that's different enough to be a surprise to others, but not do anything too damaging to the ships engines

Leni smiles happily the excitement written all over her face for all to see. This is what its about exploring and finding new things and not knowing what there were! The hairs on the back of her neck bristling and all thought of sleep vanishing from her mind as she excitedly looks at the astrometrics findings. Quickly surmising the various aspects and forming a report in her head for the Commander. “Sir, the anomaly is static and approximately 60k metres in size” Looks between the XO and the console as she taps and speaks “ It’s not possible to be certain at this distance, even the higher intensity scanners aren’t 100% reliable this far away but it looks to be solid as opposed to gaseous. It is on our flight path so as we get closer I’m sure we’ll discover more. Unless you’d prefer us to avoid it?” Pulls a bit of a face at this suggestion, it was kinda compulsory, but she really hoped that it wouldn’t be taken up! Concludes her report “You may also want to consider slowing down as we get closer if you do want to investigate as otherwise we’ll be right on top of it before we know it Sir” Patches the data over to tactical station “Ensign Stardust, are you able to make anything of this at all? I realise the data is extremely limited at the moment, but if you could find anything it could be critical?”

Axel sends a order to Sickbay to have some medical personnel ready in case something happens.

Her tactical training sneaking into her thoughts, she starts full tactical scans of the area, finding her hand always coming to rest near the alert status options, in case she needed to defend the ship suddenly. Glancing over to Science, she responds, "Not yet, it seems solid to me as well, either solid or with a shield grid surrounding it, other than that, i'm still scanning.".

Sonata makes a mental note that she will need to recharge after the shift. And remains silent for now, looking over the available data and formulating theories.

Hode continues his long report to command.

Jordan looks at the viewscreen, not seeing any solid or gaseous objects yet. They would get there soon enough and the worrying needed to come to an end. "Sixty kilometers in size? That's pretty big. Good idea to slow down as we approach. Helm, take us down to warp factor 2 now and we'll sneak up on this thing."

Hopkins keeps her eyes on the scanner, sending data to the Science console. She looks to the Commander "Aye, Sir. Ten minutes to the Anomaly, Sir." She drops the ship's speed to warp 2, watching the data start to flow in"

Leni smiles to herself allowing a moment of self-congratulation on the last upgrade to the scanners. The Luna class vessels already had the finest long-range sensors in the fleet, but after finding out about the new scanners whilst transferring the Pinsatri equipment during its relocation and requesting the upgrades getting approvals and then installing them in down time on previous missions she was more than happy they were proving worth all the paperwork to get them. With some alarm she interjects the commander with the information they would not have had otherwise “Commander! The anomaly is about 9 minutes ahead now at current speed and the latest data shows it’s remaining static but its way bigger than we first thought and is emitting some strange particles! It’s not at all like anything we’ve seen before, I would be tempted to say it’s a bit like a Red Dwarf but … *sighs* it’s so far out it’s hard to be sure! And it doesn’t comply with any known description of a Red Dwarf I’ve ever seen!" Leni starts humming another tune, whispering under her breath words coming from nowhere “… it’s cold outside, there’s no kind of atmosphere ….” Shakes her head “Must be sleep deprivation catching up!”

Axel looks around the bridge at the different crew members, seeing that they are exhausted and want to take a rest but can't.

Stardust continues to try to scan the object, but can't identify it as a ship, or life form, or anything, just that it's there.

Hode finishes writing his log about the Sireny people and the steps taken to try and assist them. He also had added a couple of paragraphs with regard to ship's status. Now his job would be to distill that to a short briefing for Toocool. Not an easy task. He frowned. And then frowned again. The vibration of the ship had changed. He put the PADD down on his desk. Yes. Definitely. What the devil? Suddenly he went from zero to 60 miles an hour and burst out of his ready room door to the bridge, his eyes darting from the viewscreen, to Helm, then searching for Hal. He looked directly at the Chief Intel Officer but spoke to the Helm Officer: "Mr Hopkins. Course and speed?"

Jordan looks over at the Captain, now glaring at him with something of a hostile face. Of course he should have been informed prior to a course change. "Captain, we have detected a spatial phenomenon in the sector and changed course to investigate, in accordance with standard orders. I apologize for not informing you of the course change."

Hopkins: "271 mark 15, Warp 2, Sir. a few minutes from the Anomaly" She suddenly gets nervous, as the Captain has never spoken to her before, and she feels a sudden sweat appear on her brow. Hopefully he won't see her hands tremble

Leni pulls up all the previous reports of sightings fitting the data we know about this one looking to correlate the key characteristics bit nope no matches. Checking the database for anything anything at all to identify this object before exasperatedly reporting “Sir I advise extreme caution we can’t identify this anomaly and we’re getting extremely close to it! Maybe an advance probe would be in order Sir? It’s starting to look like several anomalies now a closer inspection would help enormously Sir! Oh wait never mind we’re here !!” runs the most detailed scans she can as the cluster comes on short range scans.

Axel sees the Captain storm out of his room and nods to him while continuing to look at the people around and the viewscreen to see what is going on.

Stardust: "Sir, as we get closer to this, unknown, Regulations would call for Yellow Alert as we can't know what, if any, threat it might pose to us.", she says, fairly dryly, still trying to figure out what it is. She glances over to Science, "Ma'am, i'm showing that it's both solid and there are many particles, could it be multiple ships in a single shield grid or something?"

Hode felt irritation rising but struggled to push it down and appear Captain-like, calm, unruffled and confident. He opened his mouth and then snapped it shut again without saying a word. He could not dress an officer down in front of the bridge crew. His eyes swivelled from Hal to Helm to Hal and back to Helm. "Two seventy one mark fifteen is not on course for Pinastri," he points out. "What anomaly?" His eyes shoot to Leni. "Mr Hopkins, one half impulse. Mr Stardust, Yellow Alert approved. Mr Jordan, you are correct," is all he would say, but his voice sounds tight and disapproving.

Jordan realizes that the Captain is now giving orders to the helmsman even though Hal is in charge of the bridge watch. That was his prerogative, but he would continue to direct the rest of the crew. He looks at the object, now visible on the viewscreen, glowing in bright colors near the red dwarf star. "Tactical, what do you make of that object near the phenomenon? And Science, what is that thing? With all the colors, it looks like it should be emitting all kinds of particles? Is it a danger to us?"

Hopkins nervously nods to the Captain "Aye Sir, One-half impulse"

Leni nods to Ensign Stardust “Yes I concur it’s becoming clearer we have a Red Dwarf and a mass of some debris which has coagulated or been fused together, and there’s signs of some form of spatial rift in the middle of it!” Turns to the XO with a side glance to Captain Hode but continuing to address the officer in charge “Sir we really need to stay well clear of that we don’t know what it is and we’re way too close already for my liking! I would say yes it is highly dangerous in my opinion!”

<<< something begins to scan the Durant >>>

Axel hears the noises and sees that we're placed ion yellow alert. Keeping an eye on his console to be sure nothing dangerous is happening with the crew anywhere on the ship while we are so close to the unknown.

Stardust had her finger hovering over the yellow alert command button, and the second she heard the word "approved" from the captain, she hit it, almost without thinking about it as she's still focused on trying to identify what this anomaly is. Hearing the XO's question, she responds, "Sir, it seems to be several somethi...", she pauses as a light goes off on her console, "Sir, we're being scanned!", she announces.

Sonata looks around, narrowing her opticals at the information before her. Looking down at her console and keeping her words internalized. She had nothing to say at the moment, but being scanned was a shock. The ship was being affected, so she tried to keep an eye on her own diagnostics. In case anything began to affect her as well.

Hode tries to stand back and listen to the Chief handle the ship. It's not easy. Especially with Leni talking about danger. And Pleasure talking about a sluggish helm. Yellow alert blares. He taps his combadge, =^= Hode to Engineering. Discontinue all diagostic procedures and ensure all systems are optimal within the next five minutes. And report on the transporters. =^= He turns to tactical, opening his mouth to ask what is scanning them, snapping it shut when he reminds himself Hal is in charge of the bridge for this shift.

<<< several tractor beams latch onto the Durant >>>

Jordan watches the screen as the bright object appears to get visible closer. What had he gotten them into? The Captain would not be very happy with him at all if his ship was pulled into the mass of objects near the anomaly. "Tactical, go to Red Alert and report the source of the scans. Operations, divert all nonessential power to the engines. Helm, full reverse. Get us out of here."

Hopkins: "Sir! Warp engines are offline! Trying Impulse!" She panics a bit, trying to give full reverse to the impulse engines, to no effect. Sir, We are at full reverse impulse, but are not slowing down at all! I.. I don't know what to do!"

Leni: Realising the urgency and the surprise cause by the unexpected actions of ‘something’ in the cluster of debris and star which was supposed to be inert breaks down the analysis from the scanners and calls out generally and with a degree of visible tangible frustration “All I can confirm is something is doing this, this isn’t any random or natural event its got all the signs of being deliberate on the part of some entity” Jolts at her station as the ship lurches and stops “What the hell was that !!” Looks around as the red alert signals breathing a sign of relief that we’re going to get out of here IF we can break free of whatever grabbed hold of us that was!”

Axel hears the red alert go off, so he quickly sends message to Sickbay to get all rested Medical personnel on duty, and clear the area for all non-serious patients so that he is sure all will be handled as it should in case it is needed.

Stardust sees alarms start going off and announces "tractor beams locking on!, she announces then hears the captain's command for red alert, and hits it almost automatically. "Unable to locate source of scan sir, but there are 8 separate tractor beams all locking on from different angles, pulling us in, they appear shielded." She tries rotating the shield harmonics to see if she can break free of the beams but finds it unsuccessful.

Sonata her servos absorb some of the shock of the sudden jolt of movement the ship experienced. But her head still moves forward, coming close to hitting the console before her. Her servos were not acting as they normally did, which worried her. Over a half dozen different tractor beams was not good news, and she had no idea what she could do to help. Aside from diverging all nonessential power as she had been ordered. Her 'battery' was steadily moving closer to the red zone. Add the red alert to the mix, and you had one very silent yet frustrated Ensign.

Hode fought with anger. darned intel chief had made decisions to move the ship in range of an anomaly without a 'by your leave'. Hode himself might have made the same decision but... he grits his teeth, trying to remain calm. And hangs on to the helm console as the ship shakes. Anger aside, the status and safety of the ship had to be his first concern. Screw the training. He barks: "Tactical, where are those tractor beams coming from. What will happen to the Durant if we enter that mess?? Shields at maximum. Can we use the deflector to push us back." He turns to Hal: "Get engineering on the horn, we need warp, and we need it now. Mr Leninah, we know *what* we need to know *who*... scan the tractor beams, what kind of energy is it, do we have any record of that..." he pauses for a moment, "It cannot possibly be the Borg?"
