CAPTAIN'S LOG STARDATE 161026
We have crossed into Sector 011G. It has only been partially explored. We will be able to gather some additional data as we move through the area. And, although I am loathe to add any time to our journey, I am granting a request from science to observe a hither-to-unknown comet that will be travelling through the sector. It will mean a slight course change and a reduction in our speed, but I hope it will not add significantly to our ETA at New Talax.

I have called a briefing at 1230 hours stardate 161028 in the Bridge level conference room. At this time I expect to hear departmental status reports and hear suggestions or recommendations for our study of the comet.

Departmental Briefs
Operations - status report on all systems; preparation for extra power allocations to primary systems if needed; astrometrics to have priority.
Communications - work on boosting our comms signal so we can reach Pinastri and advise them of our status.
Helm - obtain data from science and plan course to intercept the comet for best observation. Advise optimal speed for study.

Medical - study effects of ion gas and dust particals on humanoid life. Report any unusual symptoms or behaviours.

Tactical - study effects of ion gas on weapons and shields, prepare and test ways to increase shield power if required. Report on any ship traffic in area. Ensure force fields in cargo bay three are fully operational.
Marines - assist tactical. Shuttle crews stand by.

Engineering - explore the possibility of gathering ion gas from the comet tail as a possible way for starships to power systems when on long deployments
Transporter - work on repairing and enhancing cargo bay three transporter so that samples may be gathered safely from the comet tail.

Science - study existing data on this sector and use long range scans to enhance or improve data on systems and anomalies
Astrometrics - provide course data to helm. Work with Operations and ensure sensors are calibrated effectively for observation of this space body. Advise transporter technician with regard to types of material and amounts of material that will be transported to the ship.

Intelligence - develop a brief on any life form cultures in this sector. Work with scientific and tactical data as we receive it to determine if and where life exists.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER'S LOG STARDATE 161026

Having crossed into Sector 011G, I had begun the co-ordination of the departmental heads in planning the gathering of data as we move through the area. Commodore Toocool is allowing science to observe a comet that will be travelling through the sector. Unfortunately, half way through my work, I received a sub-space message, from my home world, Betazed, that my presence was required as part of my administrative duties, in a diplomatic conference on a nearby planet. This is somewhat upsetting for me because I really would rather be beside my Commanding Officer's side whilst we do the research. Besides, the last conference I attended became a bit of a "dramafest" to quote an English 21st century term. Two opposing factions would not work together, and nothing really got decided, and so, in my opinion, it was rather a waste of time.

A briefing will be held at 1230 hours stardate 161028 in the Bridge level conference room. I have full confidence in my team of departmental heads, who will work on their own initiatives.I have already cleared with Operations that Astrometrics have priority over other areas of research. Communications will also be prioritised in their work on boosting our comms signal so we can reach Pinastri and advise them of our status. Medical staff have been stretched to the limit recently with our ship wide bout of food poisoning, but I expect they will produce a good report on the effects of ion gas and dust particles on humanoid life. The Talaxian guests still are lively and in the mood for a party at all times, however Security is co-ordinating their patrols and keeping them away from all areas where they could cause any potential mayhem.

Security Situation Report
Stardate: 161025

--------------------------------------------

We are now two weeks out of space dock. The journey to New Talax is providing ample time for our new and inexperienced crew to familiarise themselves with the ship and its systems. Root and branch assessment of the of the Durant’s security continues.

Bearing in mind we have just come out of spacedock, only minimal issues are expected. Nevertheless the practical nature of this assessment program will prove priceless to the cadets, crewmen and marines in terms of experience.

Upon assessment of the internal visual sensors, it has found that whilst the placement is satisfactory, the quality of visual receptor is considerably below specification required for this class of vessel. All visual receptors have subsequently been inspected for the following:

• Full spectrum EM analysis to detect corporeal and non-corporeal beings
• Full spectrum visual feed
• Complete system and individual triple redundancy backup
• Duranium casing
• Fully integrated circuitry
• Failsafe tampering deterrent specification AI-42B

Needless to say, any repair programs will be timetabled in coordination with the Engineering department. The Operations Manager will also being consulted for installation of all security equipment. I believe it is imperative that they be familiar with the equipment, its placement on the ship, and its proper usage. They will also be informed as to any new personnel who have access to said equipment.

Science Report 161027

Initial data shows this space body is a single-apparition long-period comet on undefined elliptical path. We don't know if it has been observed in this sector before. We would be needing access to the scientific data or mythology of local inhabitated planets to be making this determination.

When first observed at far sensor range at 161020.26 this object appeared to be an asteroid. As this vessel travelled closer to the space body evidence of a dust trail presented. Further study warranted. Recommendation to approach comet to fifty thousand kilometers and match trajectory. At current speed with adjusted course, estimated interception 161028.1315. Coordinates was presented to helm.

This sector holds three stars with planetary systems. One or more of these suns will be affecting the ion trail of this space body. Thus shields must be calibrated to withstand gas particles or asteroidal impacts.

Communications Situation Report
Stardate: 161027

=/\= ============================ =/\=

I have been asked to try and help with restoring communications with Pinastri, an assignment that I readily accepted. The challenge was going to be how to accomplish this due to the distance between the Durant and the colony.

Had this been the Alpha or Beta Quadrant, the problem would have been non-existent due to all of the communication relays that were spread throughout those two sectors of space, allowing for near-instantaneous subspace communications. In the Delta Quadrant, we didn't have that luxury unless we started to create our own communication relay network. Trying to set up something like that might take years and a lot of resources.

But we didn't have that kind of time to work with, as something was needed now.

That left two possibilities, although either way assistance from Engineering was going to be needed to make either of them work properly and hopefully get create a communications signal emitter that was strong enough to project a subspace signal from wherever the Durant was in the Delta Quadrant back to Pinastri.

1) Utilizing the natural radio signals of the stars as a relay.
2) Modifying the deflector dish to create a communications beacon.

Both would work, but there might also be limitations as well. For the first option, there could be considerable signal degradation, especially depending on how many stars the communications signal may have to bounce off of. For the second, the messages would have to be in short bursts due to the potential power draw to the ship, plus it'd be one way only . . . outgoing from the Durant to Pinastri. There'd be no way of being able to accept incoming messages unless they could rig up something similar and then project it to our precise location in space.

Short term, using the natural radio signal of the stars as a relay might work, but eventually the Durant and other ships in the quadrant might need to lay the groundwork for a true subspace communications relay network. Using the stars in this method has been researched, and the modifications to the on-board communications systems documented and submitted in a proposal to the command staff, pending approval.

RP Narrative
161028.1230
------------------

Commodore Toocool enters the briefing room. There are some head nods and scattered greetings while she takes her seat. She looks expectantly to the left.

Commander Russell Sprout, Operations: "Commodore Cheryl Skinstad is currently on leave, attending a conference in the Dactes System. Prior to her departure she worked with Operations to ensure Astrometrics will have priority use of sensors and additional power if needed to ensure the time we have alloted for this study is well supported. All power systems are fully operational and status is green for this side mission."

Commodore Toocool nods: "Commander Zania Turner, our Second Officer, has completed a report with regard to our difficulties with subspace communications to Pinastri at this distance. Her recommendation is for Starfleet to consider the installation of a relay network in the quadrant. This would take some diplomatic negotiation in terms of placement of arrays and perhaps require a Task Force to deploy and test the infrastructure. In the interim she suggested we may attempt to use the natural radio signals of the stars as a carrier."

Science Specialist T'Prain replies: "We discovered now that the asteroid field we encountered in Sector 010G was of the dust tail of the comet we are studying. Maybe it contained ion particles that be interfering with our communications to the Pinastri Sector. Suggest launching a communications bouy to increase our signal strength."

Commodore Toocool: "I agree to this proposal providing the device is cloaked and all messages encoded. We are entering an area of space once occupied by the Borg. It would be best not to draw too much attention to ourselves until we reach Nassordin. Ensign?" She nods to the next officer.

Helm Officer Frank Spet: "The coordinates from Science were received and course was set to intercept the comet today at 161028.15. Current speed is warp four. Anticipate a drop to impulse upon approach, at which point we will match the comet's speed and trajectory while keeping our distance at fifty thousand kilometers."

"Thank you, Ensign. Doctor?"

Doctor Hinima: "Two injuries resulting from Parrises Squares were treated. Both Lieutenant T'Prain and Petty Officer Dim Witty were deemed fit for duty. Ensign Hardy suffered a broken arm after tripping in Ten Forward. He is resting comfortably in his quarters after bone regeneration. With regard to proximity to the comet: as long as shields are up and hull integrity is maintained, Medical does not see any danger from the contents of the comet or its tail."

Toocool raises an eyebrow. "Thank you Medical. Lieutenant T'Prain, do you have something more?"

Science Specialist T'Prain's face looks as calm as it always does despite the Medical report on her activities: "The presence of three stars in this sector will be effecting the comet. As it is approaching any one of them the nucleus will increase in temperature, releasing more gas to make bigger the size of the ion gas tail. This could stretch millions of kilometers. The molecules in the tail will be ionised by ultraviolet rays from the stars. Difficulties may occur when the magnetic field of the solar wind is coming into contact with these charged ions. It is possible that the magnetic field in proximity to the tail will be altered in polarity. And affect the Durant in shielding or safety."

Commodore Toocool: "Thank you. I expect Science to keep a close eye on this and report any change immediately. Helm, I want you to have a reverse course plotted and set in case we need to evacuate quickly." She adds, "Security has reported the internal visual sensors need repair, Captain Broek is coordinating with Engineering and Operations to ensure that that the needed work be completed in a timely manner. He is tied up below deck but will report via visual communications." She pushes a button on the conference table.

The face of Security Chief Broek appears on screen: "As we take some time out to conduct scientific study of the comet we should remember that this is unfamiliar region of space, and that comet tails come with all nature of hazards: none more so than ionised gas.

From a tactical perspective, the gas will affect ships sensors and defector shields. It will also significantly reduce our ability to use phasers and torpedoes due to the risk of igniting the gas.

Underperforming sensors in an unfamiliar region of space obviously leaves us at risk. We will endeavour to utilise long range sensors for as long as possible, and from as soon as possible to monitor any traffic movements.

Should standard deflector shields fail significantly then there is the added risk of gas build up causing microfractures to the hull. Whilst highly unlikely, worst case scenario is that this could cause a hull breach. In the event that the standard deflector shields fail, or significantly underperform then we should deploy the ship’s multiphasic shield generators to provide the extra strength.

"There have been some issues with intermittent forcefields in Cargo Bay Three. I can report that two emitter ports have been replaced and the forcefields are now optimal."

Toocool: "Thank you Chief for that thorough report. We'll let you get back to work." She flips a switch and looks towards the engineer.

Petty Officer Sanchez: "Engineering is working with Security on the sensor issue and affirms forcefield and transporter in Cargo Bay Three are status green. Information from Science with regard to potential samples has been received. Proper recepticals have been replicated and a Science team is to be on hand when this part of the operation commences. Both warp drive and impulse engines are operating within normal parameters."

Toocool nods. "Keep in mind what Lieutenant T'Prain has reported. I want no leakage of ion particals in the cargo bay. Keep the transporter operational and be prepared to transport those containers off the ship in an instant. Major?"

Major Zero: "In cooperation with Engineering and Security, Marines are providing personal to assist with watching areas where internal sensors are offline due to repair. We have two shuttle teams standing by in case deployment is needed."

Toocool nods, "Thank you. Intelligence?"

Commander Marley Knott: "The requested brief on local cultures has been humbly provided. Only one non-warp capable species in the sector. Two other systems appear lifeless. In keeping with the Prime Directive we recommend the Durant avoid entering planetary system Zero Zero One Five Two in case we are observed by natives. They may well be aware of the comet and will be watching the skies."

Toocool, "Acknowledged. Helm and Science, please take note. If we need to change course to avoid that system, make it so. I - "

=^= "Helm to Commodore Toocool. Captain, we're approaching the comet now.=^=

Toocool taps her combadge, =^= "Acknowledged. On my way." =^=

She rises. "Thank you all. This side mission is a go, keeping in mind the recommendations and suggestions made at this briefing. Operations, please prepare the communications buoy, and launch it when ready. I want everyone on their toes while we are close to the comet. Yellow alert. Let's get to the bridge. Dismissed."
