TDRP015: Eff 160805 - "TD Shore Leave"

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

Forum RP
OOC Notes
-------------

General:
-All crew may participate by writing logs for their department or personal logs until shore leave ends (TBA)
-Read previous post(s) to get a general idea of what your department might be doing; decide whether your character was on the saucer section or stardrive section and log accordingly.
-Be careful not to use the names/positions of other characters (x said this or did that) unless logged by that person prior to your post.
-Use of NPC's is fine, a partial list is here - viewtopic.php?f=603&t=28789 - feel free to use one that exists or to add anyone new except for department heads (chief/vice chief).
-Feel free to have little departmental or personal problems, but please check with the CO [ IM here or email poisontoocool@gmail.com ] before introducing a major idea that might change the overall status of the ship
-we will be docked at SS Tranquility for R&R, ship repairs, resupply, and training.

Mission Notes:
-Ship was separated, Saucer and Stardrive had their own missions
-stardrive was damaged and reintegration was not possible, hence return to starbase for repairs; the saucer will escort the stardrive to Tranquility
-we will be travelling from 160805 to 160807, shore leave will begin 160807
-the Talaxian freighter "Sarlaxa" carried 45 crew who will be disbursed to Pinastri after medical care & interviews at Tranquility
-SS Tranquility has just moved to a new location - located near the Humbolt belt between Pinstri VI and VII about 1 AU from the asteroid belt. Our ETA is 1400 hours 160807.

===================

It was 0500hrs when Ishan woke to the droning sound of the alarm, cracked a bloodshot eye and groaned. "Alarm off."

What had he been thinking? Staying up all night to finish Academy reports was a younger man's game. Working into the early hours and then getting into a heavy drinking session with Bob Arblaster the Master-at-Arms was a much younger man's game. He rolled over and fumbled in the drawer of his bedside table for the hypo filled with hangover cure and pushed it into his neck.

Ahhh. It paid to be on good terms with the ship's physician.

Only a lifetime of discipline kept him from giving in to temptation and letting himself drift back to sleep in a warm bed. He ran a hand across his scraggy face. God knows he could use the sleep, but there was plenty of work to be done before the ship docked at Starbase Tranquility for some much needed shore leave.

Forcing himself up, he stumbled into the bathroom for morning rituals and a quick shower. He re-emerged feeling almost human. Feeling actually human would require one more thing. He activated the small replicator in his quarters.

"Coffee. Black. Extra strong, extra sweet."

The rest of breakfast could wait until after he reviewed last night's security logs, but coffee was essential. He took the hot cup letting the blessed aroma work it's magic, and took a seat at his desk.

"Computer, cue messages for the past four hours by priority; highlight any level six or above."

He sipped his coffee and smiled when nothing appeared highlighted on the screen. Security was about a lot more than knowing when and how to fight. You had to be aware of your own weaknesses and readiness, and you had to keep abreast of your opponents so you could anticipate their moves. That was really the biggest part of the job and required staying on top of a constant stream of information. 'Fore-warned is fore-armed' was a saying almost as old as security forces under whatever label they had ever been known.

Right now, neither Command nor Intelligence nor any of the outside sources Broek had carefully cultivated over the years had anything requiring immediate attention – for which he was profoundly grateful. Maybe this lull would last long enough for him to get these green, fresh out of the academy kids better prepared before the next crisis. And maybe, just maybe, an uneventful day would mean he could steal away at lunch and take a much needed nap…

His comm. beeped. "Broek here."

"Sir, there's been an accident on the firing range. Four injured."

darn it all! The coffee suddenly became secondary to bringing him fully awake. "I'll be right there. Broek out."

Thank the Prophets he hadn't lingered in bed. He downed the rest of his cup in one burning gulp and ran out the door. Medical would obviously see to the injured, but he needed to know who they were and how bad it was. And then he needed to know why, as weapons accidents didn't 'just happen' – not if everyone did what they were supposed to.

There was an investigation to direct, equipment to inspect, witnesses to question, vid's to review, and once conclusions could be drawn, briefings and reports to prepare.

If he was really lucky, just maybe he could steal away by lunch to have breakfast.

Crewman Terrance Frogue was in the Saucer section engineering room when the Assistant Chief Engineer walked up to him: “Crewman, grab a repair kit and head to transporter room two. You are going over to the Stardrive Section to repair their transporter. You said you wanted to be assigned to a transporter, this is your chance to see what you can do.” Frogue nodded and went to grab his supplies. Once he assembled his tools, he made his way to transporter room two.

Transporter Room Two— Saucer Section:

Chief O’Reilly: “Crewman Frogue, I can only place you next to the transporter room on the Stardrive section, I guess they are pretty beat up over there.”

Frogue blinked and replied, “Very well, sir I am ready when you are.”

The Chief eye'd him. "Don't call me Sir, I work for a living." He started to prepare the transporter.

"Sorry Chief," Frogue hit his communicator, “Crewman Apprentice Terrance Frogue requesting permission to beam onto the Stardrive section.”

“Permission granted,” came the voice from the other side of the communicator.

Frogue then looked back at the Transporter Chief, “Energize please.”

A minute later a beam covered Frogue and he was transported to the Stardive section.

Transporter Room Four- Stardrive Section:

Frogue walked into the transporter room and almost had a heart attack.

Muttering to himself, he said, “What the heck happened here? It looks like the Borg tried to attack or something?” He could see that the controls had been burned out, that one of the transporter pads was melted clean through. The air smelled of smoke.

“I guess it could have been worse?" Taking a deep breath, Crewman Frogue sat his kit down and got to work.

"... 17, 18, 19, and 20. That's twenty slips of latinum to the man with the most incredible luck at Dom-Jot that I have ever seen," said a gruff voice. The voice belonged to a man, in his thirties, wearing dingy grey clothes. He was clearly a Bakrinium miner on a few days leave from the Humboldt Belt and handed the latinum over to Ishan in a tentative manner.

"It's not luck; just simple spatial Euclidean-geometry," said Ishan. "For another 50 slips, I could quite easily teach it to you."

The miner chuckled. "I couldn't learn nuthin' when I was young. That's why I came all the way out here and do what I do. Don't think money could change me now," joked the man in a voice as dingy as his clothes. If it were possible to breathe clean air from an air-filtered environment and exhale dust, this man could do it.

"Maybe later, friend," replied Ishan. "I'm suddenly ... quite thirsty." With a smile and a nod, Ishan made his way over to the bar. The sonic dampening field on this side of the enormous lounge was either disabled or non-functional. Either way the noise added to the atmosphere of fun and frolic. He was tired and weary, and what he wanted most right now was to drink until he forgot that he was drinking. He couldn't let himself do that of course. Even if he was on shore leave.

He found an empty chair at the bar, got the bartender's attention, and ordered another Bajoran blue wine. The replicators on Tranquility always got the flavour just right, and besides - as he looked at the chronometer on the wall above the bar - he still had almost three more hours before Monica would end her shift.

The Bajoran decided to enjoy the noise and commotion. He turned his head as he caught wind of the conversation next to him "... and this is the third double shift my team has pulled this week. It's inhuman," said the obviously non-human engineer seated next to him. He was a large, hairy being, and although he was facing away from him, he could smell his foul breath.

"I've pulled the same shifts and it hasn't affected me any," said the companion of the engineer. Ishan couldn't see the companion because the being was sitting on the other side of the engineer exactly opposite him, but could tell by the way he rolled his L's and hissed his S's that he had a forked tongue.

"How do you keep alert? I'm starting to be unable to tell my type-L Verteron capacitor from my class 3 welding torch," asked the engineer.

"As long as you don't confuse either of those with your personal tool," joked the companion. Ishan smiled slightly as he struggled to contain his laughter. 'Maybe I should introduce myself?' he thought to himself. Before he was able to decide, the companion hissed, "this is what you need."

Ishan heard a faint clink as the companion put something on the bar. Curiosity was killing him, but he was having too much fun playing voyeur.

"What is it?" asked the engineer.

"An edible wafer," replied the companion. "Is that not obvious?"

"Yes, yes! I can see that," said the maintenance worker in an irritated tone. "But WHAT is it?"

Ishan raised his glass and took a mouthful, but shouldn't have because the companions answer almost made him choke. "It’s a narcotic," answered the companion frankly. Ishan worked hard to keep from spewing his blue wine all over the bar. The companion continued, "Caffeine, Sildenafil, and other base amino acids. By themselves, completely harmless to humanoid life, but combined they become..." the companion paused for effect, "…a nice little pick me up. It’ll take you places you couldn’t dream of."

The Bajoran's mood changed, as this was something he had not anticipated. It was apparent that he was listening in on a drug deal. Knowing security protocol as well as he did, he was aware that he must be very careful because with drug deals 'setting the hook' on new victims was usually monitored. However, security presence in the lounge that evening was unusually sparse, and he couldn’t be sure if the companion and his prey were being watched, recorded, or under any other manner of surveillance. He only knew that he must do two things: avoid contact with both men, and get a security team there pronto.

Standing up from his stool, he necked the last of his blue wine and made his way to the exit. Just outside the lounge he slapped his combadge "Captain Broek to station security, possible narcotics transaction underway in the main lounge. Dispatch a security team immediately."

The ship had taken a beating and limped to space dock in two pieces. It took Crewman Frogue 16 hours to complete the repairs on the stardrive’s main transporter room; he was dog-tired by the time he was done. At least he wouldn't need to transport back to the saucer section - his quarters were on the lowest deck. He headed to the turbo-lift, hoping his noisy roommate was elsewhere. Frogue needed some peace and quiet.

The turbo doors slid open. The Crewman saw Petty Officer Lux from the Supply Department. Frogue smiled and said: “Good evening, Petty Officer.”

“Crewman, you look like you have put in a good day's work. How do you plan to spend your off time while the ship is in spacedock?” asked Lux.

“I am not sure, Petty Officer. I am considering sleeping most of the time and maybe writing a letter home” answered the Crewman.

“Computer, halt turbolift,” ordered Lux. The lift came to a stop. He turned to Frogue: “Crewman, I have been in Starfleet now for six years, and I just made Petty Officer in the last promotion cycle. If there is anything I have learned over the years, it's that duty will always be there, and there will always be work to do. But, Starships only make it back to space dock now and then. Once the ship arrives, the Officers have a lot to do, but even they take time off. You need to do the same thing. Make sure you get off the ship and go to a bar or whatever it is you do when you are not in space.”

With that said, Lux ordered the turbolift to continue to the crew quarters.

USS Durant, docked at SS Tranquility
Stardate 160824
------------------------------------------------------

The crystalline walls sparkled with reflected light as the brown ball shaped security device shot out arcs of electricity at the nine Starfleet personnel in EVA suits.

One of the Starfleet people, a young Tellarite ensign, broke cover and headed for one of the faceted wall sections. Another bellowed, "Tev, what the hell are you doing?"

Two seconds after ensign Tev broke cover, another followed him, Angelopolous an enlisted security guard armed with a phaser rifle, shot at the brown ball.

"Computer, freeze program."

At the command from Captain Ishan Broek, the surroundings stopped moving. Andrew Angelopoulos sighed. “Here it comes”.

"All right," Broek said to the people under his command, gathered in the Durant’s holodeck for a debrief, "who can tell me what Angelopoulos did wrong there?"

Around him, six other enlisted guards raised their hands. Angelopoulos put his head in his.

Standing before them, Broek, flanked by his Master-at-Arms, CPO Bob Arblaster smiled. "Angelopoulos, do you know what you did wrong?"

Venturing a smile, he said, "Yes, sir. I shouldn't have bothered wasting my energy defending a stupid officer who doesn't know not to break cover?"
Several chuckles started to form, then died when Broek's facial expression managed somehow to get darker.

"Most officers are too stupid to know not to break cover. That's why we're here. Now, when the Chief beamed down with you, Robins, Lauoc, Kors, and T'Mandra to support Tev, Stevens, and Conlon, you each had a task. The Chief was in charge, Lauoc and T'Mandra were to secure the perimeter, and what were the rest of you supposed to do, Robins?"

Angelopoulos had opened his mouth to answer, but Broek had instead posed the question to PO2 Madeleine Robins. She had been in security on the USS Shogun for 5 years and had only been aboard the Durant for a matter of months.

The more experienced woman said, "We were to protect the engineers, sir. I had Stevens, Kors had Conlon, and Angelopoulos had Tev."

"Right. Kors, what does protecting the engineers mean, exactly?"

The wiry Trill woman gave Angelopoulos an apologetic look before saying, "Stick by the engineers at all times…no matter what."

"No matter what, yes."

Broek paced back and forth in the holodeck. Finally he turned his pitiless blue eyes on Angelopoulos, who, for his part, was trying desperately to sink into the bench.

"Angelopoulos," he said in a slow voice, "does 'no matter what' include following officers when they break cover to start playing with their crystals?"

"Yes, sir."

"Yet you didn't do that."

"No, sir. Honestly, I wasn't expecting it."

"Congratulations, that's the second wrong answer you've given in five minutes. For the love of the Prophets people, today we're all security. Our job is to expect the unexpected and to keep the people on this ship safe. If you can't handle that, then you know where the door is. Understood?"

As one, all nine security personnel, even Chief Arblaster, said, "Yes, sir."

Angelopoulos bit his lip in annoyance. Back on Pinastri, Arblaster had once asked Angelopoulos what he thought of Broek, and he descirbed him then as "brusque." After that dressing-down, brusque would be a relief.

"All right, for those of you with some shore leave to take care of, you are dismissed. The rest of you will drill again tomorrow 0530 hours"

"People." Broek looked out at everyone. "Dismissed."

Stepping over Kors, Angelopoulos set a land speed record getting out of the holodeck. He wanted to be away from Broek as fast as possible. He'd been in security for a little over two years, and one truth he'd learned was that, if you were in your CO's doghouse, avoid said CO like the plague.

Executive Officer's Personal Log

Our Ship has been separated. The stardrive was damaged and so was on its return to starbase for repairs. The saucer has been ordered to escort the stardrive to Tranquility.

The SS Tranquility had just moved to a new location, and so I was looking forward to meeting up with the crew and catching up on their news. However, things have a strange way of developing and shore leave has been a bit hectic.

I ended up staying at the Starbase instead due to a number of issues that needed to be taken care of by a Senior Officer. I had to oversee an enquiry as to how an accident occurred on the Firing range injuring a number of people.

An enquiry has also had to be launched on a possible drug deal, and I await Captain' Broek's report. He is a thorough Officer and so I am certain that he will get to the bottom of things.

A Transported pad melting has not helped many crew relax and staff have had to work double shifts to get on top of the repairs.

I have also had a lot on my mind recently as I volunteered to help out on shore with the arrangements for the forthcoming Admiral's banquet. It has been fun getting involved with something not normally on your work pile, but as the Banquet approaches there have been many things to prepare, and it has been quite challenging. Well, once repairs are done and we link up again, I can think back to this time as relaxing.

================

I find myself immensely irritated. Instead of Shore Leave, I've been in Hearings daily for the past week, with regard to what the press is calling "the B-two-three Fiasco". Apparently putting crew and ship at risk to rescue forty-five beings is less important than the fact that they all had to leave their personal belongings behind. I'm being sued. The JAG lawyer assures me this is just routine so that insurance or other coverage can come into play when the Durant is cleared of any wrong-doing. Military officers are sometimes brought into civilian courts in these kinds of cases, she tells me. I'm angry that some fly-by-night Pinastri lawyer talked to the Talaxians and convinced them they have a case. At least I was able to attend the Admiral's Banquet, but was so distracted I didn't even notice I'd been awarded the Legion of Honor. I am appreciative. It makes the other thing sting a little less. Tomorrow is something they call 'closing arguments'. Hopefully that will be the end of it, and I can spend some time in a garden somewhere, licking my wounds.
