TDRP011: 160619-25 - "Nasari Safari"

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

Week 160619-25 - "Nasari Safari"
Forum RP
OOC Notes
-------------

General:
-All crew may participate by writing logs for their department during the period of 160619 to 160625.
-Read the CO's post(s) to get a general idea of what your department might be doing.
-Be careful not to use the names/positions of other characters (x said this or did that) unless logged by that person prior to your post.
-Use of NPC's is fine, a partial list is here - viewtopic.php?f=603&t=28789 - feel free to use one that exists or to add anyone new except for department heads (chief/vice chief).
-Feel free to have little departmental or personal problems as you work on the overall mission, but please check with the CO [ IM here or email poisontoocool@gmail.com ] before introducing a major idea that might change the overall status of the ship or the goal of the mission.

Mission Notes:
-Ship travelling from 160618-160620
-Arrival at general coordinates 160620 morning SLT
-Research CV's & solar flares in binary systems, and possible effects on ship
-On 160620 we will find the source of the signal. Details TBA.

USS TAYLORHOLIC DURANT

=^= Captain's Log - 160619.0000 =^=

While at the intersection of three sectors near a rare binary system known as a cataclysmic variable, we detected a signal from an unknown source via one of our class 5 subprobes. Although corrupted and cryptic, we determined that it was a distress call from a yet to be identified source. Leaving behind a runabout with a team aboard to monitor telemetry for science research, the Durant has moved off on a course set to circumnavigate the anomaly and locate the message senders, who appear to be in Nasari sector, on the other side of the binary system. Since low warp is all engineering will recommend due to our proximity to the gravimetric and magnetic eddies in this area, ETA to signal source is approximately two days.

We will not be without entertainment during this leg of the journey. I am told the Marine Blue Team have established a barbershop quartet and will be performing this evening in 10-Forward. Tomorrow there will be a performance of the Vulcan Chamber Orchestra, which includes some native singing.

With all these plays, debates, instrumental ensembles and poetry readings, it's a wonder we actually get any real work done. What's next? Klingon Opera? *Sings in a breathy tone* 'BOOOOW-cha-daaay'.... "I sincerely hope not."

We were delayed in arriving in the Nasari Sector, on the far side of a mysterious binary system, due to a massive solar storm that required us to extend our course beyond what we had planned. We have now arrived at the coordinates where we expected to find the source of the signal that brought us here. To find nothing.

We lost contact the class five subprobe which was acting as a relay between ourselves and the unknown sender of the message. Our first task then, will be to work to re-establish communications with them, while also checking over ship's systems.

Science and Tactical inform me that magnetic and gravimetric waves from the anomaly are affecting our long range scans as well. I've put them to work on finding a solution. If sensors and communications are not working effectively, it's going to be difficult to find our quarry!

It's exceedingly strange, to have followed a cryptic cry for help across the border of two sectors, passing a mysterious but powerful anomaly, to find nothing. Our sensors have been affected by the magnetic waves in this area, I've asked Engineering and Science to work on ways to strengthen their reach. In the meantime, we are executing a search pattern in and around the coordinates that we calculated to be correct. However, given the probable distortions of signals and energies due to the proximity of the cataclysmic variable, we could be way off base. I have Operations pouring over all the telemetry from the class 5 probes and subprobes sent into the anomaly in case there are any other signals buried in the noise.

A curious thought comes to me. Perhaps it is not just subspace communications and long range sensors that have been affected by the tug of war occuring in the binary system. What if the signal we received was from another time. An echo of the past? A warning from the future?

An interesting speculation to discuss over Earl Grey. But for now, we do the work of searching diligently for the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' in the dark silence of space.

USS Durant, status yellow. Magnetic waves have affected systems, Engineering advises warp drive should not be used. Proximity to the binary system and cataclysmic variable has created issues with gravimetric distortions, Science recommends impulse only to allow time for the ship to maneuver around them. Long range sensors are intermittent at best. Communications also affected. Source of the distress call appears to be in the binary system. Science suggests it is perhaps a ship caught in the magnetic and gravimetric eddies and unable to get free. Captain has ordered a new probe to be sent ahead to the system to see if the location of the other vessel can be pinpointed. Tactical suggests a rescue attempt should be made by shuttle, theorizing that the smaller ship would be able to move more freely. Captain is waiting further data before a decision will be made.
