TDRP2234: "All Hail Carol" (220910)

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We are para-RPers and storytellers. Using live, in-the-moment chat, we listen, read, respond, and create a new story as a collective of writers jamming on a theme. We are given a context – a place to begin and then improvise together what happens next, and what happens after that… and where does that take us.
That sense of being in fellowship with other creative people who understand the overall context and environment while writing a story that is vibrant and alive creates a sense of enjoyment and togetherness. Our goal on Durant is to foster that sense of belonging, to embrace good RP etiquette, and to have tons of fun!

SITREP:
The Durant rescue team has found the Hemmer shuttle crew on a Class M planet in Sector 009D, that is similar to earth's Jurassic Period. The Hemmer crash landed after being damaged by an ion storm. Two of the Ensigns on board were injured and the Vulcan Torak is ill and will die if he is not treated in sickbay ASAP. Lt. Sandra Lacrima, and the EMH will fly the La Forge shuttle to take Ensign Torak and Ensign Linda Johnson back to the Durant to sickbay. Before leaving. Sandra received a proposal from one of the Priki tribe cavemen named Ruark. She unknowingly accepted the proposal to be his mate when she accepted a gift from him of a beast's claw. She gave the claw gift back to him to end their engagement.

Lt. Colonel Elsa Mitchell, Lt. Selina Otsuka, and Ensign Carol Ellsworth will work to help the Priki tribe, while they wait for Sandra to return for them and upon returning Sandra will also destroy the Hemmer shuttle or take the shuttle back with them, not leaving a trace of their technology on the planet. They will also look for Carol's lost phaser.

Carol, Selina and Elsa will help the Priki tribe by finding natural ways to treat and cure the radiation poisoning and teaching them to the natives. They will look for plants that will help and also treat the injured Vrook and sick Una. The Priki will also look for a new home that does not have poison in the cave walls.

The Priki tribe wants the three officers that stayed with the Priki to help them to join the tribe. They especially revere Carol, as she was the first one to show compassion for the Priki and helped them.

All of the officers realize they have violated the prime directive, but it was done accidentally, however now by some it is being done willfully.

The Prime Directive prohibits Starfleet personnel and spacecraft from interfering in the normal development of any society, and mandates that any Starfleet vessel or crew member is expendable to prevent violation of this rule.

As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the starship Enterprise-D: "The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules; it is a philosophy... and a very correct one. History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less developed civilization, no matter how well-intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous."

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Carol Ellsworth saw Lieutenant Otsuka speaking with Ahnee and then suggesting how to administer the herbs. She smiled and nodded her head. "Of course Lieutenant Otsuka, please tell me." She raised a finger as if asking for authorisation to talk before the suggestion. "I would like to tell you that the radioactive invisible particles coming from the cave had affected the plants and poisoned the surroundings. I don't know if we'll find healthy herbs around here. What do you suggest? Do you think we should ask Una and Ahnee?" She looked at the Lieutenant and paused for a moment. "If they find the right things, Una would lead with the blisters applying some herbs so we wouldn't need to interfere more, because we have violated the prime directive more than a few times." The tone of Lieutenant Lacrima's voice startled her. She had just given the stony thing back to the tribesman!

Una had already fallen unconscious, which was fitting that the tribal witch doctor who was shunned would eventually suffer the same fate as the rest of the fallen...

Ahnee looked at the Strange Ones as they discussed helping the Priki. Ahnee looked to Carol. When the females paused in their discussion, Ahnee touched Carol's shoulder and said, "Ca-rol...you are Priki tribe now. If you leave you must return to us. We want the three of you to join our tribe. You will join us, yes?" She smiled at Carol. "You are special to us all Ca-rol. You are Priki Tribe now. You and those that follow you in your lifeline are always welcomed here, and always Priki tribe. You saved our tribe. Without Ca-rol..all Priki maybe die. We will always remember you, and we will always speak of you Ca-rol. We will tell the story of how you saved the Priki to our children and their children and forever through our lifeline. As long as there is a Priki you will be remembered. And the cave walls where we live we will paint the story, and those that come after us our lifeline will paint the story and tell the story." Ahnee raised a necklace she was wearing over her head and moved to place it over Carol's head and around Carol's neck. Ahnee said, "This necklace belonged to my great grandmother. I wear it to honor her and remember her, but now I want you to have it, wear it sometimes or look at it sometimes and remember your tribe. You will always be Priki."

Zark stood outside with most of the others, watching as the injured Strange Ones were taken out of the cave and into the Strange... Box. He had understood from some of the speakings that some of the group was planning to leave. Perhaps the box was their destination? He was a bit confused about the purpose of placing injured ones into the box, but he decided to just watch and not say anything. Other talkings were about the cave and poison from it that was harmful. He had never thought of poison being involved. To him, the cave was full of evil spirits. In the end, tribes people were hurt by the cave, so it was best to stay away from it. He noticed one other thing. "Harmful creatures are more active today. Zark will protect you, but all should be very careful not to let them bite. Just hit them on the nose and most times they will go away." He poked a nearby creature with his club, because it was getting too close. It jumped a bit and moved away.

Vrook looks at the strange one and smiles with a grunt. "You... thanks..." he says as he feels the clamminess.. "Aunikee... I saw her.... " he says, just as he tries to sit up, feeling dizziness, yet slowly lays back again.

Elsa Mitchell: I was standing out in the open in front of the shuttle. Sandra, the EMH, and 2 Ensigns were directing Sandra for takeoff. Ensign Ellsworth and Lieutenant Otsuka will be staying behind with me. I looked deeply in Sandra's eyes, paused, then said "Hurry back with some help for Selina's crash job, Lieutenant Lacrima."

Sandra Lacrima turned on the shuttle, making the warp engines glow, illuminating the surrounding area in a blue shine. She looked back towards her passengers and even though the two Ensigns were unconscious, she said "Everyone that is not holographic: stay seated and fasten your seatbelts, we're heading home!" and turned around to take control of the La Forge. She looked outside and saw that Colonel Mitchell, Lieutenant Otsuka, Ensign Ellsworth, and some of the natives had gathered near the shuttle, obviously watching their departure. She waved goodbye to them as the shuttle lifted off. What stayed unnoticed to her was that a dinosaur had approached the shuttle and tested its edibility. Lacrima just felt a dull sound and light shudder of the shuttle as the dinosaur must have made acquaintance with the shuttle's nacelle. Slowly at first, they flew over the beach to the open sea, then started ascending towards the sky. As she navigated towards space, her thoughts drifted back to what happened on the planet. The last couple of minutes were hectic, with so many things happening that she couldn't really take care of, like the natives that were approaching her. Now she had time to review those events and maybe she was a bit too harsh with the male native whose name she tried to remember. "Ruark!" she verbally let out her thoughts, not caring if it would have confused the EMH, and giggled. It was actually sweet of him to bring her a gift, and maybe she has hurt his feelings by refusing him and handing him back his gift, but in the end it's only fair. She will not stay, and even if she would have accepted his gift only to be polite, he would maybe wait for her return, which might never happen and in the end might hurt him even more over time. "In the end it's the best for him!" she talked to herself again.

The EMH helped load the two injured Ensigns and continued to tend to them as the shuttle door closed and Sandra sat down to pilot the shuttle. She ran her tricorder over both again. While serious, Ensign Johnson should be okay as long as they got back to Durant in a timely fashion, but Ensign Torak needed to be in surgery yesterday. She looked over at Sandra and primly said, "Are you waiting for permission to take off from the creature trying to eat the hull, Lieutenant? I've got dying patients here. Let's go!" She turned her attention back to the patients as they started to fly off.

Ruark walked outside the cave to see Sweet Hair, the Strange Ones Healer, and the two sick Strange Ones leave. He walked out in time to see Sweet Hair Sandra in the object and she waved. He knew she was not waving to him, she was waving to all. She had been very cold to him, and did not care at all about his feelings. There was no warmth in her face. That is what hurt him, maybe more than her rejection that she did not want to be his mate. It was that she did not feel any warmth, like he was nothing. He looked down in thought, then looked up as the object was hit by a beast, and then it flew up high, and Sandra left. He was lucky such a cold creature had not accepted him. It would have been a disaster. He looked around at everyone gathered. He felt happy that some of the Strange Ones remained to help the Priki. "We must move our tribe to a new home," he said, looking at Zark, and moving to the caves to say the same to Vrook and Ahnee and the Strange Ones.

Ellsworth felt a light touch on her shoulder and turned her head. Ahnee was telling her she was part of their tribe. She opened her mouth slightly to answer but she couldn't say a word especially when she saw Ahnee smile. She was so warm and sweet but she couldn't stay. Ahnee had given her a special necklace, it was an inherited necklace very special to her. She touched it, of course she would remember them, but this was impossible. They shouldn't leave any trace here and if they did that, they would definitely alter their evolution and beliefs system. She had to stop that. She would need to ask the Captain, she would know what to do. She smiled back and placed a hand on Ahnee's shoulder. "Thank you Ahnee, you all are very special and friendly too. You saved us too." She wasn't sure if Ahnee would understand the meaning but she would understand the intention, still she needed to give her something in return. She wouldn't dare to reject her present and it was pretty too. She looked at Ahnee and pointed at Una. "She needs attention. Can you help me?" After 30 minutes she had tended Vrook's wounds, but he had lost a lot of blood. She had already given him a shot to stabilize him and it had taken almost half an hour so they could see him getting better. He had attempted to sit, but he was still very weak, and staying in the cave wouldn't help him, he needed fresh air too. She got closer "Vrook walk?" She moved her arms and patted her own shoulder. "Here, try to walk, Vrook." She started walking slowly to the entrance while pondering all the reasons why they couldn't beam them aboard the Durant and about all the reasons why they couldn't appear in their history or on those cave walls. This wouldn't be prime directive violation. This would be destroying the prime directive rule. She needed to look outside too, for any plant which had medicinal properties.

Una felt her breathing slow and become more labored as she remained unconscious...

Ahnee looked at Una as Ca-rol pointed to her. "Yes Ca-rol I will help you. I know many of the healing plants Una uses." She watched as Carol turned her attention to Vrook and walked to the front of the cave. Ahnee looked at Una then ran behind Carol, and said "I think Una is dying... help her." She ran outside to Ruark and knew he was sad and feeling rejected. She walked to him and said, "Ruark, your heart will heal in time," and she patted his shoulder. Then she looked to Zark. "What are you doing, Zark? We think Una is dying. Ruark and Zark find medicine plants, please."

Zark was looking at the pretty box with people inside when suddenly its outside lights came on and it flew up into the sky! Zark was startled by this unexpected development and he stumbled backward, tripping over a large rock and tumbling head over heels. When he stood up, he was ankle deep in muck and sinking. Demonstrating stumbling incompetence was a bad way to attract a mate. But there was no help for it but to ask for assistance. "Hello, Zark have problem here. Someone can help? If Zark drown in quicksand, can no longer provide bunnies for tribe to eat. Zark promise to protect and provide if only someone will help to pull me out." He had seen strong tribesmen lost to quicksand such as this, and their deaths were unpleasant. He would rather be mauled to death by a predator than drown. At least there was a chance of survival with a predator, also end up with nice sexy scars, make good story to tell around cooking fire.

Vrook struggles to his feet, yet collapses to the bed, he struggles to feels his legs and feet on the floor, and struggles to breathe. He walks a few steps, then collapses again. "Vrook, do this now!" he screams as he stands to his feet. He takes a deep breath, and walks closer to the firehaired strange one. He nods at her and says, pointing at him, "Vrook can...Vrook, can walk..."

Lacrima navigated the shuttle till it left the planet's atmosphere, then set course towards the nebula they passed on the way to rescue the Hemmer crew and that seemed to block any communication. So hopefully after successfully passing that nebula they will be able to communicate with the Durant again. As the shuttle then was on autopilot, she stretched, yawned and decided it was time to get some food and some coffee before they arrived at the nebula. She got up and turned towards the EMH, which was still monitoring Ensigns Torak and Johnson. "So.. Doc, we should pass a nebula in about 10 minutes with a total travel time of one hour and twenty minutes depending on the current location of the Durant. How are our two Ensigns doing?"

The EMH frowns as Sandra tells her how long it will be before they get back to the ship. "An hour and twenty minutes? That's impossible. I don't know if I can keep Ensign Torak alive that long, even with my skills. I simply do not have the tools I need here to save him. He needs a full surgery suite..." She sighs and shakes her head before looking over at her other patient. "At least Ensign Johnson can last that long." She stops talking and continues to monitor both patients.

Ruark ran toward the cave to check on Una, but then he heard Zark saying he needs help, that he is in the quicksand. Zark is from the Humi tribe and he is new to the surroundings here, so he did not know about the quicksand probably. He ran back toward Zark and saw Ahnee there to help him. "Ahnee, go and help the Fire Hair with Una, I will help Zark!"

Ellsworth was sitting on the ground with some herbs littered across the grass, along with test tubes. The cave men had brought some herbs and medicinal plants. She had been scanning and testing leaves, samples from the plants they had given her, and some others in the nearby areas, trying to isolate their properties. She had found a good source of potassium and iron. A good nutrition and leucine supplement would reverse the tissue damage and muscle loss. She started pulverising some minerals. She mixed the red powder with herbs extract and added water, waiting. Her breath had been coming in ragged heaves since she had been in the cave, that's why they were working outside. "It seems Vrook is stabilized." Una had been tended, she was still very weak. Carol looked at Ahnee. "You can help heal the others with this and the herbs you all have been using." After a few minutes, the extracts and the salts were ready. She moved her hands, whispering to Ahnee, "You need this," then pointed to the minerals. "Make powder." Carol sighed happily, the mix now had turned dark blue, A test was needed. if it was successful, this would remove the radiation from their bodies. She told Ahnee, "Need to test it. We don't know if it will heal all."

Ahnee listened as Carol said 'make powder,' but she wanted to save Zark first. She said, "Ca-rol..." she looked to Carol and said, "I'll be back!" She ran toward Zark. She looked at Zark as he slowly started sinking into the quicksand. She laughed for a second, and then stopped, she looked serious and said, "Zark! You did not know the quicksand was here? You fell into that. You could die if you sink under!" She looked around for a branch on the ground that she could hand to him. She saw some branches but they were not long enough or strong enough to hold his weight. Then she looked at the trees around the area. and saw a lot of vines... She went to one and pulled down on it and it broke. Then she tried another vine and pulled down on it and it felt strong, so she grabbed it and used all of her body weight to hold it down and swing it out to Zark. She heard Ruark call out that he was coming to help. She said "Ruark, thanks, but I think the vines will hold and Zark can get out. Zark! Grab the vines!!! Can you pull yourself out?"

Zark sank almost to his chest in the quicksand and was beginning to despair of help. Suddenly one of the predators seemed to go crazy, and came splashing into the quicksand. It became alarmed and splashed back out, then came back again. If Zark could just catch hold of the thing's tail or foot, he might be able to save himself. "Come back, pretty boy. Let us be friends. I shall feed you bunnies, all you can eat, if you will pull me out of here." He grabbed for the predator but it was already out of reach. He splashed around a bit, trying to look like a desperate trapped animal, which in fact he was, but better not to tell the predator that. The thing came over and stood right above him, its big feet keeping it from sinking. He reached with his left hand, getting a firm grip on its leg, then poked it with the club using his right hand. "Go, beast! There is a tasty bunny in those bushes there. GO GET HIM!" He threw his club onto the dry land and grabbed the vine that Ahnee had thrown. "Never fear! Zark is coming, and thank you!"

Vrook slowly emerges from the cave, his eyes trying to focus from the bright sunlight, and he looks around to see his people, and the Strange Ones. He has a look of concern as he runs towards the other to see the others. He does not care about his own safety, as he reaches out for Zark, "Grab hold now!"

Lacrima listened to the EMH's report and nodded, and while she turned and knelt down to one of the cabinets to grab some of the emergency food, she said, "Yes, I see, Doc. Well, this shuttle is on maximum speed already, the only thing I can do is to call the Durant after passing the nebula and make them head in our direction…" She rummages through the supplies, looking for something like a coffee. "That's not acceptable! They should equip these shuttles with a basic replicator… *sighs* and make them beam the two Ensigns directly into sickbay as soon as they're in transporter range." She got up with a package in her hands.. "Or what do you think, Doc? Any better ideas?" She looked at the package that read, "Klingon Menu" under some Klingon letters. She made a "Yuck!"noise and knelt down again to search for a "Human Menu" and got up as she finally found it. She took a seat at helm again with the nebula coming in sight already. Still a couple of minutes left, she opened the box that contained some food bars and a water bottle.. "Of course… no coffee…" she nagged till a chocolate bar caught her eyes. "Ah yes.. that's a compensation," she said, and placed the box on the wide dashboard and took the chocolate bar. She opened the shiny wrapping and took a big bite of the chocolate bar, sighing in pure relief.

Zark held tightly to the predator's leg, also pulling on the vine, and managed to extract himself from the muck. "Zark very grateful for all help, thanks you very much. Zark in debt to you all now, including strange green dinosaur." He retrieved his club, noting that there was indeed a bunny in the bushes. He dispatched it with a quick club strike and tossed the carcass in front of the predator.

The EMH nods at Sandra's suggestion. "Excellent, Lieutenant! Yes, we need the ship to meet us along the path and beam Ensign Torak directly to sickbay." She checks Ensign Johnson again. This would be so much easier if she wasn't out of radiation medicine, but Ensign Johnson would hold on long enough, it was Ensign Torak she was... "I'm losing him again! Keep clear!" She activates the cardio-stimulator still on Torak's chest and watches with her tricorder "Okay, I have a rhythm again, though I don't know for how long."

Ruark looked as Ahnee was able to pull the vines down and Zark grabbed them. Ruark then saw Vrook rush over and extend his hand to Zark. Zark was pulling himself out using the vines. The huge Hooreech was trying to get to Zark, and it seemed it almost fell into the quicksand as well. Ruark watched the scene with Zark being helped by grabbing hold of the beast, and also holding Ahnee’s vines. Ruark saw Vrook reach out his hand to help Zark as well, and then Zark got completely free of the quicksand. Ruark looked at Ahnee and said,"Good work Ahnee!"
