USS T-Durant Mission TDRP20-14: "You talking to me?" 200517

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

DURANT MISSION TDRP20-14
Sun May 17, 2020
OOC Preparation
==============

STARDATE: 200517
CREW CALL TIME: 1115 SLT Sharp
LOCATION TO MEET: Durant Booth SciFi Con
RP LOCATION: SciFi Con Bridge
MISSION LEAD/GM: Cmdr Evelyn Rieko

WHAT TO WEAR:
UFS Duty Uniform - YES

WHAT TO KNOW:
-the ship is on route for Sector 005E
- we left Pinastri two days ago
-the alert level is: normal
-speed is warp 5

POST ORDER: Will be decided, and posted, by the Mission Leader just prior to mission start (and sometimes adjusted in the RP if necessary).

IC Premise: The Durant just enjoyed two weeks of R&R at Pinastri Headquarters. We were resupplied and repaired. Crew exchanged completed. Rear Admiral Toocool and Commander Evelyn Rieko gave a full report to Starfleet Command on the Klakkr incident.

We are now deployed to Sector 005E for some nice boring charting and scientific survey work. In the meantime... there's a change in the pecking order. Captain James T Hode has retired, and Rear Admiral Toocool - recently rescued by the crew of the Durant from some odd droids - has the conn after being away at Academy for more than a year.

Some will recall her command style from before. Others may be... well... taken aback.

RP NARRATIVE
===========

Poison Toocool sat in her Ready Room, where she had been pretty much confined for the past two days since leaving Pinastri Headquarters, except for the times she had been touring specific areas of the ship with senior staff or meeting with them in the conference room. It had been a blur, so much to catch up on. The Durant had had a bit of an overhaul during her two weeks at HQ, there were some new faces in the crew... hers, being one, really, since she had taken a leave from her position as commanding officer of the flagship to assist with Starfleet Academy after the previous Superintendent had stepped down. She had never really wanted an administrative position. She had done her best and hopefully that was a decent enough job, but she was immensely relieved when the year was up and she was able to return to her... well, let's say her most natural place of work, the command of a starship. But then... she had been.. The victim of a plot by the Romulans to take over her mind and steal her away, no doubt to interrogate her and force her to provide top secret information about the Federation Fleet and disbursements. Somehow she'd managed to escape and eventually be rescued by the Durant. She sighed as she worked. She'd done all kinds of reports to Starfleet Command, but had not yet completed her personal log about what occurred. At that point her PADD beeped, reminding her she wanted to inspect the bridge at 1130 hours. She rose and tidied her hair.

Rachel Reynolds: Now we have been deployed again after repair and resupply at Pinastri, she is examining the environmental controls, life support and efficiency of sickbay technology to ensure we are fully operational.

Bodan Landar: The type XII phaser arrays were reporting back near perfect diagnostic data with the emitters delivering an accuracy to within 0.012 arc-seconds. Bodan expected this would be the case, as we had only just left Pinastri after a repair and maintenance cycle, and anything else would have been odd to say the least. The mundane nature of system checks however was a welcome distraction from the nervousness he was feeling about meeting the CO for the first time. He wasn't really sure what to expect, people had differing views, time would tell.

Evelyn Rieko walked onto the bridge feeling refreshed after two weeks of shore leave at Pinastri Headquarters. The first 3 days were filled with reports and meetings, but after that she was able to relax and enjoy time off. She had some alone time and spent time with friends. She'd even let her friend Lexi talk her into a double date at a new Bajoran restaurant. She'd tried Hasperat soufflé. It was delicious but too spicy for her, it made her eyes water. It's hard to make a good impression on your date with red watery eyes and a runny nose, but he seemed to like her.... she smiled then pushed those thoughts away, focusing on here and now. When she'd walked onto the bridge, she'd headed straight for the Captain's chair, then abruptly stopped in front of it. Glancing around the bridge and then taking her First Officer seat. Number One. Rear Admiral Toocool is back! During the time Toocool was kidnapped, Rieko had commanded the ship. She made the decisions and managed the crew, deciding where they would go and what they would do. Now it's all changed.

Nems Darkstar takes a deep breath. We have been deployed again. We never have enough time to visit with our families and friends. We really need a good down time to relax but off we go again. We are back onboard after two weeks. He rubs his eyes. Rear Admiral Toocool is finally back with us. Starts to watch the traffic outside making sure this is a smooth ride for us.

Hal Jordan sat at the COMM console, looking through the various configuration screens as the ship cruised effortlessly through interstellar space. His actions during the Klakkr's Drift mission had kept the communications systems from being seriously compromised by the Romulan (probably) virus in his tricorder. He had lost his special tricorder disguised as a PADD, confiscated by Starfleet for analysis of the computer code it had downloaded. But they had replaced it with an even better version, a tiny model concealed in his left sleeve and held on with the sleeve pip. He could activate it using a small contortion of his left thumb inside the sleeve and take scans with ease. He looked toward the Captain's Ready Room, wondering if Captain Toocool would make an appearance during this watch. He was happy to have her back, but unsure about the effect that her recent captivity might have on her mental state.

Leni looks around for new faces as well as the returning old faces, quite glad that wasn't an audible thought as she wasn't too sure how the Rear Admiral would take to that. It'd been a while since she served under her and was pleased she had come through her ordeal and made it back to where she always seemed most comfortable. Quickly cleansing that thought by checking the astrometrics array and other shiny and upgraded science equipment, keen to get to play with these and a nice quiet few days cruising in an uneventful mission was just the thing after the happenings at Klakkr's Drift and the combat with the Romulans. All necessary but not great for the blood pressure. She was, however, relieved after looking over the reports she had access to that no negative mention was made of any contraventions being noted on the use of nucleonic radiation in the battle with the Sahe'lagge. At the time it made sense, though afterwards she had doubts. Still, what had to be done was done and now we could get back to some proper science!!

Toocool loved the feel of the ship under her feet. You couldn't really hear anything, she supposed, but there was a sense of... life, a vibrancy, a vibration, she supposed many crew felt... like being attuned to the movements and the feel of the ship. She had worried that a year away from this sense, this feel, would cause it to disappear. She paused for a moment, just before the ready room doors, and closed her eyes. Relaxing. Listening. Yes. There it was. Suddenly, her eyes snapped open. What the devil? She stepped forward with purpose. The Ready Room doors swished almost soundlessly, announcing her presence on the bridge. Nodding briskly to no one in particular, she stepped quickly to Helm and said, "Are we still at warp factor five? It feels like we've slowed down." Glancing to Evelyn, she added, "Something's off. Check with Engineering, please." Then she studied the helm officer with a keen, golden gaze, waiting for a reply.

Reynolds was not working aboard the Durant when Toocool was in charge before, she had only worked under Captain James T Hode on the USS Taylorholic Durant and then, when Toocool was missing, for the XO, Evelyn Rieko. She is a little wary of the reputation of her 'new' Captain. Rachel also has a bit of a reputation too, being Scottish and very forthright, saying things as they are and not beating about the bush on words. Her own nickname she knows is "The Wee Crankie" given to her by the Sickbay crew of her last ship.

Elton looked over her console and was satisfied everything was in order. Engineering had done a fine job repairing the ship and even had corrected the slight starboard drift that had started when the engines were subjected to the stresses of the drift. Upon hearing her new commander's request, she glances downward and replies, "Aye sir, we are holding steady at warp-" and pauses a moment and taps a few keys. "No that's incorrect. We are not. We are actually now at warp 4.871... and dropping at a rate of ... *runs some calculations* approximately zero point zero two per minute."

...and as if by magic, there she was. Landar froze for a second and just stared. Her achievements as a ship's Captain were right up there. Immaculate in presentation, he thought, and if first impressions were anything to go by then purposeful, authoritative, and instantly commanding respect. He excused himself for being a little starstruck, and told himself to just stop staring.

Rieko looks to Toocool, "Yes Sir." She presses buttons on her console, speaks with Engineering, then says, "Sir, Engineering is running diagnostics on the warp core and all power systems." She is receiving orders now instead of giving them. Now she had an even better idea of what Captain Hode felt when he lost command of the Durant.

Darkstar looks up from his console, scratching his chin as he speaks to Commander Rieko. "Sir, by my reports there is a freighter towing a barge of waste products, 2 light years behind us on route to Excalibur."

Jordan looked to the right as the Ready Room doors swished open and Captain Toocool emerged. He smiled briefly as she asked for a status report from the XO and Helm. It would be good to get back to normal after having Captain Hode around for what seemed like forever. There would be no more pip pip cheerio, no more unkempt hairstyles, and no more scones or crumpets (or whatever they had been) to drop on the table, jam side down of course. The diagnostics he had run on his panel completed at that moment, and he looked up. "Captain, communications systems are operational after being placed in an abnormal mode during the Klakkr's Drift mission. There is no one communicating near us that I can detect. If you like, I can look at the ship's power allocations to see if there's a clue to our diminishing speed. And on a personal note, I'm very glad to see that you're back!"

Leni prepared her report on the science systems status and at what seemed like an opportune moment, "Sir, science systems have undergone a significant overhaul, tests on functionality are 75% complete with only a couple of problems, which are nothing more than mis-configurations which we're fixing and schedule to re-test. We have a queue of research tasks running on the rare and useful data we captured on the last mission Sir, and I'm hoping..." at which point she pulls herself up and tries to look more serious and blasé before continuing "...at the end of the consolidation to submit a paper to HQ on the experiences and what we have now learned. I'm pretty confident we discovered a rich feast of new things and it will keep the community busy for years!" Flicking a few switches on the console "Other than that all necessary science systems are functioning well within expected tolerances, Sir." Relaxing the expression, she added "Oh yes, and welcome back, Sir"

Toocool nodded to Rain, pleased she had been right, then frowning as she noticed the position of the pips on the officer's uniform. "Before you appear on my bridge again, please read the uniform code with special reference to the regulations around proper placement of the pip on one's uniform." She pointed to her own pip, carefully pinned in the centre seam and exactly placed three inches from the shoulder seam. She then moved towards the science station, gracefully acknowledging Hal's comment. "Good to be back," she said, a sudden grin transforming her face, before turning to speak to Leni. "Seventy-five percent? Let's see if we can get closer to one hundred, shall we? The flagship of the fleet should be a shining example of efficiency." She glanced to Evelyn, "I suggest a uniform inspection of each duty shift over the next twenty four hours." She glanced around the bridge, her eyes lighting on Bodan. Another new face. Staring at her. She stared back. "Ensign... Landar, is it?" she asked crisply.

Reynolds: Being a senior member of Medical staff she is aware that Toocool's 'treatment' took place in Durant sick bay and that her kidnapping occurred because of that treatment. She does not feel comfortable about that. Accidentally, while reading up about her Commanding Officer (in order to make a smooth transition from Hode to Toocool), she found out that Toocool's medical files are marked Top Secret. Rachel really does not know what to make of this. Did the fact that her files are unavailable lead to the fact that a plot to kidnap her was a success?

Elton glances up at the Admiral and studies her a moment, unaware how she would be able to know that the ship was slowing before she could. The golden eyes stare back at her and she wonders just what lurks behind them. Not to be unprofessional, she moves her attention back to her console and immediately runs diagnostics and a quick query to Engineering, who responds to her as well, saying they are running diagnostics. This shouldn't affect the warp core as such and she finds it... odd. As the CO starts to talk about her pips she looks back up at her and listens while she is told how to properly place her pips, and while she feels they are properly placed within Starfleet guidelines she notes the information and, "Aye sir, I will fix my pips when I have a moment."

Landar listened intently to the conversation surrounding him as he took a cursory glance at his own pip to make sure it was placed correctly. He looked up with a start as he heard Toocool mention him by name. Keep it cool and professional, Bodan, he thought. "Aye sir, it is that. Very pleased to meet you. I wish I had something exciting to report, but all primary tactical systems are optimal and fully responsive.....Sir"

Rieko hears Rear Admiral Toocool's orders, "Yes Sir, uniform inspections of each duty shift!" She runs her fingers through the ends of her hair.. feeling 'at attention!' even though she is sitting. There's something about Toocool...she remembers her well. She'd always admired the Rear Admiral, but she was always very strict. Rieko had joined the Durant as a green Ensign coming from the USS Protector, and was impressed by Toocool and a bit intimidated...but now she was a Commander... and slightly intimated. She smiled. and sighed. She missed Captain James T. Hode.

Darkstar looked up from his screen while he is watching his sensors and looks up to the Captain and says "Sir, it is great to see you back with us, you have been missed." Looking outside, "I wish something exciting was going on, but not much out there in airspace except the freighter that's towing a barge of waste products." Wish there was some action, but not right now. Keeps an eye on his sensors for a bit.

Jordan began looking around in the power systems display to determine why the speed was dropping. Hearing that Engineering was also working on the issue, he considered letting them handle the whole thing. But he had already offered to help, and even though the Captain had not acknowledged his offer, it would have been less than professional to give up so soon. He studied the block diagram display of power flow throughout the ship, searching for any anomalous readings. Propulsion had top power priority at the moment, so requests for increased power by any other systems should have been automatically denied. He went over the safety systems - antimatter containment, core ejection, flow regulation. All were normal. What could possibly be draining so much power? "Initial check of the power systems on the Ops screen show all systems normal, sir. We may want to consider dropping some non-critical loads to see if that solves the problem. Holodecks, replicators, that sort of thing."

Leni sets in motion the final re-tests and verifies nothing else is outstanding and estimates to herself she will have the retests complete soon. Meanwhile she reports "Sir, we're in the final stages of retests and should be complete very soon. I will advise as soon as they are. As for now, we've just entered sector 005E, and with your permission will start a scan of the sector using the long range scanners set to maximum range using pattern Theta 4 which I believe will be the best compromise between speed and detail. We will however need to keep speed below warp 6 or we will lose some detail or have to switch scan patterns. "

Toocool "Excellent," she replied to Bodan, glancing to his boots before turning her attention to Nems, raising her eyebrows just a tad at the report about a freighter towing waste two light years aft. "Good to see you... Lieutenant Commander Darkstar." Her luminous eyes swept the bridge once more. She ran her fingers over the edge of the science console and then studied them, almost as though she suspected some trace of guacamole to be present there. She finally moved away, towards the Captain's chair. "Doctor Reynolds, how are things in Sick Bay? Everyone fit for duty? Report please." In her perusing of crew and compliment, she did not recall any pregnancies or other expected events. And, now that they'd left Pinastri, maybe there would be no more diplomatic functions for some while. She said, "If there had been one more reception on Pinastri before we left, I might have had to replicate a larger uniform." She was notorious for her oh-four-thirty runs around the ship. Most could not keep up with her. She nodded to Hal, "Take non-essential systems offline." She acknowledged Leninah's report, "Make it so, Science." Then she gracefully lowered herself into the big chair.

Reynolds: Rachel's responses to orders and activity on the bridge are always very professional, but she cannot help being aware of undercurrents and wonders what's ahead under the command of Toocool. A new CO means developing a new relationship. She wants to get on well with her new Commanding Officer. A CMO and CO are known to clash at times or "butt heads" as she has heard it described. She smiles at Toocool and responds very politely. "We have not met before I believe Captain. I am Lieutenant Rachel Reynolds. Reporting that the health and well-being of the crew is at present good. "

Elton: While she waits for a response from Engineering, she takes a moment and rearranges her pips as she hears the order for uniform inspections. Flipping her hair back over her shoulder, she takes a moment to reflect on her choice to 'let her hair down' during the downtime at the station. Resolving to have it properly tied back for her next shift, she then calls out to confirm, "Aye, Sector zero zero five E. Current speed now warp 4 point eight zero nine... mark."

Landar felt the atmosphere was just a bit heavy in places. Was there a bit of tension between Toocool and Rieko he asked himself? Can't be easy for her to give up the centre seat just like that. He'd never met Toocool's predecessor Captain Hode either, again legendary, but as no doubt the Queen of Cronan will vouch, maybe not for all the right reasons.

Rieko made notes in her PADD: 1) Uniform inspections, 2) ensure standard operating procedures are up to date, 3)make sure all systems are working at peak efficiency, 4) make sure her boots are polished. She receives a message from Engineering along with data from the Ops officer Commodore Jordan. "Sir, Engineering has reported a power surge in the transceiver array it seems we are approaching an ion storm or an electromagnetic field."

Darkstar is keeping an eye on that freighter. Not much else to look out for in this areas. He could count stars. Looks over at Bodan. "Ensign, I can give you the rundown on the proper way to wear your pips and how your hair is supposed to be. I have been here for a while, don't want you to fail your inspection. You might get bathroom duty scrubbing something for failing inspections."

Jordan acknowledged the Captain's order. "Take nonessential systems offline, aye, sir." He activated the internal communications system. "Attention all decks, taking nonessential systems offline. Expected duration, 30 minutes, starting in 5 minutes. Save your work and make any final replicator requests." He started the countdown clock on the console and began adding nonessential systems to the power-down list. It was good that ship's systems were already classified as to their importance - made less work for him and precluded any errors where he might have forgotten to deenergize some huge power hog. But he still had the discretion to deem any system as less than essential, subject to complaints from astrometrics or special appeals from the galley. He watched as systems all over the ship started powering down, the crew acknowledging his announcement by toggling the power switches on their devices. "Nonessential systems are scheduled to go offline in 30 seconds, sir."

Leni acknowledged permission to start the sector scans with the customary "Aye Sir" and could not help a disguised smile creeping out over her lips as the Rear Admiral took to the chair. Tapping the panel, checking off and clearing the final re-tests, and checking progress on the research which was going well but would probably go for hours more given the extensive parameters she had given it. It needed to be thorough as it would get a real interrogation from the people that were going to reference this. "Sir, reporting all science systems now fully operational, 100% and available at your command." She eyed the early weighted probable conclusions and recommendations coming out of the computer and being filtered and raised a smile at those relating to the nebulae and the creature discovered there and something of a frown at the failure of the astrometrics system in that environment and a silent gasp at the bit on the deployment of Nucleonic radiation in an engagement in an uncharted nebulae!

Toocool: "Acknowledged, Helm. Steady as she goes." She nodded to the back of Helm's head. Looking to Rachel: "Good to meet you, Doctor. Prepare for a sickbay inspection at oh-six-hundred tomorrow morning." She turned and looked at her console, calling up LCARS to have another look at what details Starfleet had about Sector 005E. Some cursory information gathered from ships passing through the area. She examined the chart, which appeared rather empty. "This might all seem rather mundane after your adventures in the Drift, Number One." Glancing to Hal: "Make sure astrometrics is a priority for this mission." She was about to call up another chart when Evelyn made her report. "A power surge? Report. Helm, stand ready to alter course. Mr Darkstar, Yellow alert. Shields at maximum. Mr Landar, ensure the deflector dish is fully operational."

Reynolds responds to the Rear Admiral. "Aye Sir" and thinks "darn, there goes my 0630 jog on the running machine in the gym." She turns to continue examining the environmental controls, life support and efficiency of sickbay technology to ensure they are fully operational, then informs Sickbay of the forthcoming inspection.

Elton: "Aye. holding steady". Hearing the request for a course change she simply awaits the order to do so. She then mentally calculates the odds that taking other systems offline might affect the warp core and 'fix' the cause of the steady drop in speed and comes up with an extremely low probability factor. It felt a reflection of her duties as helmsman that the ship was operating fine the last two days and now was showing problems. Sending another query to engineering, she simply got a 'working on it' in response.

Landar acknowledged the Captain's order. "Aye, aye sir." A level two diagnostic was running on the main deflector, checking the three redundant high power graviton polarity source generators at the heart of the system, and the cluster of six 128 MW graviton polarity sources they consisted of. The extremely tenuous stray hydrogen atoms of any interstellar medium itself could be a dangerous source of friction at the speed they were travelling at.

Rieko looks to the Rear Admiral. "Yes sir, a field that consists of both electric and magnetic components. It is starting to affect the power systems of the ship....so far minimal effects."

Darkstar looks up from watching space... "Yellow Alert, aye Sir, right away." Taps his combadge =^= This is Lieutenant Commander Darkstar, we are going into Yellow Alert, do not not be alarmed it is just for our safety and yours. Lieutenant Commander Darkstar out. =^= "Reporting that our shields are now raised, Sir." From his console, moved all weapons systems to standby, to be ready at any command.

Jordan looked at the systems scheduled for shutdown and removed Astrometrics from the list with mere seconds to spare. "Astrometrics will stay powered up, sir." He watched as the Ops programming shut down the rest of the systems as scheduled. The shutdown didn't add much power to the overall pool, but between manual and automatic shutdowns all over the ship, there was now much more power available to go flowing through the plasma conduits, meaning less power was being drawn from the warp core, meaning more power was available to the warp engines. Next, he addressed the report about a power surge in the transceiver array. Sure enough, there was power flowing INTO the ship from the external antenna arrays. There must be a huge amount of electromagnetic energy outside the hull! He began shunting the excess power to ground before it could damage the ship's transceivers, but this took the antennas offline for a few seconds each time. "Captain, I am diverting the incoming power flow from the ship's antenna arrays to ground to avoid damaging the ship's systems. This means that our communications systems are compromised, affecting our ability to receive and transmit any external signals."

Leni struggles then gives in to containing a squeal of delight. "Oh my God, these new scanners are the honeybee's knees! Sir, detecting an uncharted small planetary system at the far edge of this sector approaching sector 004D, 18k LY from our current position. I can't yet tell if there are life signs, but I can already see that it's a single young star with 6 planets in stellar orbit." She stops to gasp at the detail from such a distance. "2 of which appear to be gas giants, 2 close to the star but two in the goldilocks zone, one of which is showing a large moon which is playing havoc with its orbit, and that moon is showing indications of an atmosphere and considerable surface liquid, which may be water or ice at that heat! Recommend we adjust our course to explore, as this is miraculously not on any star charts I can find!"

Toocool nods, "Thank you Mr Darkstar." Frowning, "Mr Jordan, do everything you can to send a report back to Pinastri now, to say that we've encountered a magnetic storm just across the border of Sector 005E and might be unable to report via long range comms until it has passed. Advise we will reestablish contact as soon as possible." Turning her attention to the issue of the ship's trajectory, she looked at the data Evelyn and Leninah had provided. "Helm, change course coordinates one, five, three, mark two..." Then, almost as though she had read Bodan's mind, she added, "Reduce speed to impulse Mr Elton. Number One, advise Engineering to take warp engines offline until the anomaly has passed our six." She glanced towards the viewscreen. "Science, that's excellent detail on your planetary system."

Reynolds checks that the power surge has not caused any reports of ship-wide injuries, however small. She prides herself on her efficiency, and likes to think that nothing passes under her watchful eye. Her ears prick up at the words life signs, and she wonders if any new species might be encountered. Rachel's mind drifts back to what she has read about what happened before she joined the ship. Toocool's 'treatment' took place in the Durant sick bay and that her kidnapping occurred because of that treatment. She wonders how Toocool feels about that. Will she now distrust all Doctors under her command? She wonders how Ensign Colville feels about this whole affair. Nobody really wants to discuss this whole issue.

Elton: At the yellow alert, she starts running her default scenarios, plotting evasion courses and maneuvers, and then is interrupted by the order to adjust the ship's heading. "Aye, coming about to One Five Three, Mark two," and then pulls the ship out of warp and as the viewscreen shows the stars coming to a relative rest. "Ship now at full impulse".

Landar reads through the diagnostic results as they appear, and reports. "Sir, two of the four high-torque electrofluidic servos on the main deflector have failed. As a result, we have lost 4.1 degrees of the deflectors field of focus along the ship's z-axis. Long-range sensors will likely be affected as a result. Engineering teams have been dispatched"

Rieko: Hearing the Science officer's squeal, and report, she smiles. "Yes, right, our charting and survey assignment! The Planetary system sounds interesting. Let's just keep our attention on that magnetic storm. I'm looking forward to cataloging the flora and fauna on the planets." She'd always loved Botany! Everything is going nicely... she just has to get used to Toocool again!

<< The Durant deftly avoids the incoming magnetic storm, its shields protecting the ship and crew as it sails noiselessly towards the planetary system in question. In time, science will note that the moon does appear to be class M... and that sensors show signs of life similar to Earth's Pangaea era.>>
