Mission #363: The Terevan Menace

USS Atlas, NCC-74138, is a Hestia-class long range exploration vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. Our mission is to explore the farthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant, seeking out strange new worlds and new civilizations, boldly going forward into the unknown! Our motto is “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Drewski Northman or Lt. Commander Siobhan Crystal if you would like to join us.

Roleplay Times: Mondays 5pm to 7pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Drewski Northman
Executive Officer: Siobhan Crystal

Mission Name: The Terevan Menace

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: The M863-904 System, approximately 100,000 km from the synestia

Alert Status: green

Having recently experienced the planetary collision that destroyed two planets in the M863-904 system, USS Maxwell has stayed in-system to observe formation of the resulting synestia. This sort of event is an extreme rarity, to say the least. Having withdrawn to a safe position away from the debris field, we have been scanning the rapidly evolving object with active and passive sensors. Temperatures within the synestia are high enough to sustain liquid rock and metal, and could be resulting in a great deal of fractionation of material on very short timescales. It may prove interesting to go into the synestia to do closer scans.

OOC Notes:

- This notecard was done after the mission.

- We are finally heading back to the Hapke Cluster!

- Got an idea for a mission? Write it up in a notecard, and let's talk about it! I love it when members of the crew do their story ideas!

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Summary

While making high-resolution observations of the brand-new synestia in the M863-904 System, USS Maxwell was confronted by heavy cruiser-class or battlecruiser-class starship of considerable strength. The cruiser identified itself as the Terevan Imperial starship RSS Vektarek and fired several plasma beam weapons shots into Maxwell's shields. Being significantly outgunned by this new threat, Maxwell complied with the Terevan's demands and withdrew from the system. We did manage to turn full active sensors on the ship before leaving. We are analyzing that data now in order to evaluate the tech level of this new potential threat.

Detailed narrative

During earlier exploration on the surface of the former Class L planet as it was being destroyed in a cataclysmic collision with another planetary body, Maxwell personnel were able to collect samples of silicon-based microbial life that seems to feed off of dilithium. One of the principal aims of our observations was to determine whether any of these life forms survived the impact that destroyed both worlds and converted them into the synestia. We were unable to find any signs of life.

However, we did collect extensive data on the early evolution of the synestia. We also launched a probe into the synestia, and then followed it in, using the probe data and our own sensors to identify potentially dangerous impactors as we went further in. Shields were raised as yellow alert was called before Maxwell entered the synestia. Phasers were charged and placed on standby against the possibility that we would not be able to avoid all potentially dangerous impactors. Indeed, we were obliged to destroy one such impactor. Maxwell was not damaged.

In our traverse of the synestia, we sought not only signs of life, but also signs of exploitable materials. Sensors showed a large ribbon of pure latinum - a mass potentially large enough to exceed all latinum currently in circulation in the Alpha Quadrant. Of course, this latinum is in a highly unstable, highly dangerous location. As Maxwell neared the latinum deposit, we were suddenly fired upon by a plasma beam weapon. No damage was caused, but the shields were reduced. We were then hailed by RSS Vektarek, identifying itself as representing the Terevan Empire. We were informed that the system had been claimed in the name of the Terevan Emperor, Hurn VII, and were ordered to leave the system or be destroyed.

Tactical analysis revealed that the Terevan ship was similar in capabilities to a Starfleet heavy cruiser or battlecruiser. As such it represented a significant threat. In any event, starting a war over a mass of latinum is, needless to say, inconsistent with Starfleet's mission of peaceful exploration. For this reason, Maxwell withdrew from the system. However, we did high-intensity active scanning of the Terevan ship for about 10.6 seconds before going to warp. This is roughly the amount of time it took the Terevan ship to react to our scan and then fire at us with all weapons. Maxwell promptly went to warp at that time, and exited the system without sustaining damage.

Analysis

The M863-904 synestia is a highly dynamic body exhibiting chaotic fluctuations in density and energy deposition. As such, it is a highly dangerous environment. Exploitation of this synestia (i.e. mining its resources) would not likely be be a worthwhile endeavor for a few reasons. First, the synestia is located a substantial fraction of the distance from Pinastri to the Hapke Cluster, which likely puts it out of realistic range for the magnitude of enterprise that would need to be placed in-system and supported from Pianstri in order to make such activities practical. Second, the highly unstable nature of the synestia (it is in its earliest stages now) means that any resources may well be beyond reach on a short timescale, even if they are easily accessed presently. Third, the Terevan are a capable species, and clearly willing and ready to go to war to defend their claim. It seems likely that there must be other peer powers in the vicinity who would be similarly inclined. Given the difficulties in mining the synestia in its current state, it is unlikely that the Terevan will be able to exploit this body in a significant way.
