Mission #361: Shockwaves

USS Atlas, NCC-74138, is a Hestia-class long range exploration vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. Our mission is to explore the farthest reaches of the Delta Quadrant, seeking out strange new worlds and new civilizations, boldly going forward into the unknown! Our motto is “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for.”

We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Drewski Northman or Lt. Commander Siobhan Crystal if you would like to join us.

Roleplay Times: Mondays 5pm to 7pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Drewski Northman
Executive Officer: Siobhan Crystal

Moderators: Drewski Northman, Siobhan Crystal

Mission Name: Shockwaves

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Deep Space, enroute to the Hapke Cluster

Alert Status: green

Still enroute to the Hapke Cluster, USS Maxwell is taking a route we have not done before. We'll be passing by a few systems in the M863 cluster, including M863-904 which might host a Class M planet. We'll be getting closer to the system than any prior Starfleet vessel -- the only scans we have of the system are very long-range and not conclusive as to whether a Class M planet exists in-system.

OOC Notes:

- This notecard was done after the mission.

- We are finally heading back to the Hapke Cluster!

- Got an idea for a mission? Write it up in a notecard, and let's talk about it! I love it when members of the crew do their story ideas!

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Summary

USS Maxwell's course to the Hapke Cluster as plotted was set to take the ship on a close pass of the M863-904 System. The system holds 13 different planets, of which 9 are small rocky bodies in the inner system, with four gas giants. Very long-range scans from USS Armstrong 30 years ago also suggested that there might be a Class M planet in the system. Nearing the system, Maxwell's sensors revealed that the planet was actually Class L, but they also revealed the rather extraordinary fact that another planet in the system was on a collision course for the planet, and in a very short period of time.

Maxwell diverted to stop in the M863-904 System in order to observe this very rare phenomenon: a collision between two planetary-sized bodies. It would seem that the smaller Class D world had been perturbed out of its orbit, and was not even an hour out from colliding with the Class L body when we arrived on-scene. Sensors indicated there might be a silicon-based life form feeding off of dilithium deposits on the Class L planet's surface. Bearing in mind the amount of time remaining for habitable conditions on the surface of the Class L planet, an Away Team beamed to the surface at the point antipodal to the impact point by the Class D body.

While on the surface, the Away Team collected samples of the life forms from local ice. These will be preserved for future study in Maxwell's labs. During the Team's stay on the surface, the planetary collision commenced and proceeded until the the incoming shockwaves had ejected material far enough away from the planet to rise above the local horizon. It is a unique experience to have stood on the surface of a disintegrating planet, but the finite speed of the shockwaves allowed Maxwell to closely monitor their progress across the surface and through the planet's subsurface. The team beamed out in an orderly manner, with all equipment intact, approximately 30 seconds before the beam-out spot disintegrated under the shockwaves. All crew were returned healthy; there were no injuries.

This Away Mission also afforded the crew the opportunity to witness a planetary disintegration first-hand, and gave them valuable experience with the precise timing needed to take full advantage of these sorts of rare phenomena. Maxwell, which had been station-keeping above the beam-out site, moved away from the expanding ejecta plume without sustaining any damage.

The M863-904 System now contains the second known synestia in the Delta Quadrant, though this one is still of course only forming. It should last approximately 100-200 years before re-collapsing into a new planet. Unfortunately, the extreme distance between the M863-904 System and the Pinastri System make any exploitation of the synestia (e.g. mining for rare materials that fractionate out) impractical.
