Mission #322: The Sand Wolves

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Mission Name: The Sand Wolves

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen and Drewski Northman

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Standard orbit, Hapke 8379-III

Alert Status: yellow

USS Maxwell is currently in orbit around Hapke 8379-III, a Class L planet. Having detected many different sentient life signs on the surface, but very little technology, we are preparing an Away Team to head to the planet in a shuttlecraft. The atmosphere of Hapke 8379-III has a strong ionization layer, which prevents the use of transporters. This team will head to the Karutak settlement out on the sand. Of the mysteries on Hapke 8379-III, this one seems the most urgent because of its potential danger: we do not know why the Karutak are there, or whether they have allies in the area. USS Maxwell will be monitoring from space for sandstorms and approaching sandworms.

In the meantime, we are maintaining yellow alert until we can definitively dismiss the possibility of conflict with the Karutak.

OOC Notes:

- This notecard was done after the fact.

- We're back at this planet next week! We have our current set-up, but we're also working on a second sim for a different destination on the surface.

- We have returned to the Hapke Cluster! Got an idea for a mission out here? Write it up in a notecard, and let's talk about it! I love it when members of the crew do their story ideas!

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Command Log:

Stardate: 210712

Location: Standard Orbit, Hapke 8379-III

Alert Status: yellow

USS Maxwell's Away Team is returning to the ship aboard their shuttle. All are present. Standing orders were for all Away Team members to be aboard the shuttle should it need to lift off for any reason. The team made contact with the Karutak settlement in the desert. They seem to be the remnants of the crew of a Karutak scouting ship that was defeated by an interstellar polity called the V'Kaulin Republic. Their Alpha, Thraaz, reports that they had 325 souls until recently, but have been reduced to 204. They apparently were placed on this planet deliberately. It is some sort of prison world for the V'Kaulin Republic. Most of the settlements are in the rocky mountains for safety from the sandworms, which cannot burrow through solid rock. The Karutak were expelled from the mountains after they undertook raids against the other prisoners. The V'Kaulin Republic authorities forcibly relocated the Karutak colony, including juveniles, to this exposed spot in the desert.

The Karutak we met were in poor health and showed signs of undernourishment. It is to be surmised that the authorities have taken subpar care of these individuals. They have little food, but their water source is a naturally-occurring oasis whose water is laced with highly toxic chemicals. They do have a detoxification facility -- a primary and a backup -- but the primary system has failed, and the secondary system is failing now. USS Maxwell is rendering aid to these Karutak. We will give them parts to repair and upgrade their detoxification system, and will attempt to give them food as well. It is unclear whether they will accept too much of our help. We will not rescue them from the planet, however: having that many Karutak on board USS Maxwell would be not only impractical, but obscenely dangerous. In fact, before aid is rendered, we might need to determine the intentions of these Karutak. It seems likely that if we render sufficient aid, they will only become warlike once more. It is unclear that we have Prime Directive issues on this planet, as none of the populations are native to it. However, we must consider our actions carefully in light of the discovery of this interstellar entity, the V'Kaulin Republic.

There could be Prime Directive issues in aiding their prisoners, even if there are humanitarian reasons for doing so.
