OPERATIONS LOG

This past week the Operations Department performed maintenance on the ship's hand-held firefighting gear. This rather old fashioned gear would only be used if all modern and computer assisted equipment was not available or was inaccessible during an emergency.

The hand-held firefighting gear includes items such as: fire extinguishers, axes, shovels, breathing aids, rope, first aid kits, torches (flashlights), and protective clothing such as gloves, helmets, jackets, boots, etc. Most of this equipment is located in storage modules in the various corridors. All equipment was inspected and replaced as necessary. Fire extinguishers that were close to their expiration dates were replaced with new units.

OPERATIONS LOG

This past week the Ops Department performed maintenance and testing of the ship's tractor beam subsystem.

Tractor emitters employ superimposed subspace/graviton force beams that can either draw an object toward the ship or push it away. These emitters are built into strategic locations on the exterior hull of the ship. This permits tractoring of objects at almost any bearing relative to the ship. Emitters are also located near all small vehicle entrance points like the the main shuttle bay. There are also mooring tractor beam emitters that are used during docking maneuvers. Some of the components in the subsystem include graviton polarity sources and subspace field amplifiers.

All components were maintained, calibrated, and tested. In addition, the structural attachment points for the emitters are subjected to significant mechanical stresses even though they are tied into the structural integrity field (SIF) network via means of molybdenum-jacked waveguides. The attachment components and hull were checked for signs of stress and found to be in excellent shape.

The tractor beam subsystem is fully functional and meets all specifications.

OPERATIONS LOG

This past week the Operations Department performed maintenance and testing of the ship's auxiliary power system.

Auxiliary power is typically used when the warp and impulse reactors are off-line or during emergency situations. The auxiliary power system can also provide a small boost in power for the ship's shields, inertial dampers, structural integrity fields, etc. The auxiliary power system uses fusion generators to generate the required power.

Maintenance and testing was completed successfully.

OPERATIONS LOG

This past week the Operations Department conducted maintenance and testing on the field generators (both normal and back-up units) that provide the force fields for the ship's Structural Integrity Field system (SIF). In essence, the SIF strengthens the ship's structure to handle much higher loads than it could without the SIF.

Each of the SIF field generators consists of a cluster of graviton polarity sources feeding a pair of subspace field distortion amplifiers. Heat dissipation on each unit is handled by a pair of liquid helium coolant loops. Most of the maintenance work for the SIF consists of routine servicing of the super conductive elements located in the graviton polarity sources. These super-conductive elements require servicing for every 1500 hours of operation.

After maintenance and calibration was completed, testing was used to verify full compliance with the ship's SIF specifications.

OPERATIONS LOG

This week the Operations Department performed Part 1 of the maintenance and testing of the Veracruz's AC-16 Bio-Neural Super-System Computer. Parts 2 and 3 of the M&T will be done in the next few weeks.

Background Info
Each core of the computer includes bio-neural based processors for complex calculations and an isolinear system for storage and cataloging. A regenerative liquid helium loop is used for cooling the isolinear system. The cooling system includes a delayed-venting heat storage unit that can be brought on-line when the Veracruz needs to operate with the highest level of "stealth". A miniature subspace field generator is used in each core to permit FTL transmission and processing of optical data within the core. There are also numerous bio-neural gel packs mounted at strategic locations (mostly along the ODN pathways).

Part 1 maintenance included:

1) Visual inspection of all major and many minor components
2) Manual checking & testing of the isolinear chip modules
3) Manual checking & testing of the bio-neural processor modules

OPERATIONS LOG

This past week the Operations Department performed maintenance on the turbo-lift elevator system that is used to move personnel around the ship. Components that were maintained included the actual turbo-shaft tubes and the inductively driven turbo-lift cars. In addition all the EPS power trunks and ODN links supporting the system were also maintained.

No major issues were found during the inspections, maintenance, and testing. A few components that were nearing the end of their lifetime were replaced according to the maintenance schedule.

LONG RANGE SENSOR ARRAYS

Maintenance

Maintenance of the long range sensor arrays consists of periodic replacement of components that are reaching the end of their expected lifetime, periodic calibration, and performance testing verification. All of the Veracruz's long range sensors are in good shape and have passed their verification tests.

Background Info:

The most powerful sensors and scanners on board the USS Veracruz are part of the long-range sensor arrays. These devices are generally designed to sweep out ahead of the ship's flight path. Most instruments in these arrays are active scan subspace devices, which means they can gather information at speeds greatly exceeding that of light. In high resolution mode, the maximum range is approximately six light years. In medium-to-low resolution mode, the usable range is approximately 20 light years. The sensor scan pulses are transmitted at warp 9.9997. This means it takes about 2.64 minutes per light year to reach its destination and another 2.64 minutes for the scan results to return to the Veracruz. Scanning objects at the maximum range (20 ly) requires a total round trip time of 105.5 minutes before usable information is received. When operating within the confines of a solar system (where distances are typically < 0.001 ly), the long-range sensor arrays provide nearly instantaneous real-time information. Most sensors are powered by standard power taps but a few require a high power connection to an EPS conduit. Primary instruments in the long-range arrays include:

Wide-angle active EM scanner
Narrow-angle active EM scanner
2.0 meter diameter gamma ray telescope
Variable frequency EM flux sensor
Lifeform analysis instrument cluster
Parametric subspace field stress sensor
Gravimetric distortion scanner
Passive neutrino imaging scanner
Thermal imaging array

This past week we started out with our verified, virus free systems and then installed some software updates to them. That was followed by another round of testing. In case of emergency, the old systems can be re-installed in a matter of minutes. The updates (mostly to the user interfaces) will make it difficult for anyone with intimate knowledge of standard Federation systems to take unauthorized control of the Veracruz. All crew members operating these system were trained on the new interface.

OPERATIONS LOG

The past few days the ops department crew as well as crew from all the other departments have been working on getting the Leia repaired the best we can with the parts & equipment that we have available. Until now, we have been crawling towards the Jingoku station at warp 1.5 which would give us an ETA of about 47 days. Fortunately the warp drives have just now been repaired and deemed capable of doing warp 6. Many of Leia's other systems will have to wait for their repairs until we can obtain the parts, supplies, and equipment that we need. Hopefully the Jingoku station will be able to supply some of those needs.

The past few days the ops department has been assisting the engineering department on getting the Veracruz repaired after our ordeal with our shielding of the "bronze-age" planet. Hence there hasn't been any time available for the operation department's standard maintenance procedures. Hopefully we will soon be back on our schedule.
