HQRP016 - Underground Rescue

The Ournal Class space dock can support up to eight Sovereign Class vessels, and up to twenty four smaller ships. Tranquility is a huge show of Starfleet strength as well as a safe haven and a place to repair starships. It also provides staging areas for many freighters and transport vessels.

The giant sensor towers and the forest of antennae allow the facility to scan for light-years around the area of the station. Non-Starfleet endeavours are welcome at Tranquility. Retail and office space along with cargo holds and numerous holodecks are available. Tranquility provides transporter service and trade arbitration if necessary.

Tranquility also has a significant tourist trade, by virtue of its role as gateway to the Pinastri Sector. Advanced medical and scientific research facilities can be found on Tranquility. The only limit regarding missions is the imagination of its commander.

OIC’s Log – Lt. Commander Oola Quan, commanding.

The Colony seems plagued with increasingly dangerous quakes. The reason for the instability is currently unknown, nor why these quakes weren't detected in over 2 years of planetary surveillance and research prior to establishing a colony. There were seismic stabilizers on route, but was taken by pirates. Most of the damage to the colony superstructure has been repaired, along with the restoration of the power systems. With power restored, the lift to the mining camp was functional. There were several miners trapped below, and the condition of the camp was unknown. Our goals are to render aid where we can, try and determine the reason for the quakes, and see if we can do anything to minimize future quakes.

Science Report on Aries IV
Prepared by LtJg Ferre Flamand

Aries IV, fourth star of 7 in the Aries system, a G5 star comparable to Sol.

Diameter : 6855 km
Mass : 6.522 x 10²³ kg
Escape velocity : 5.133 km/sec
Density : 4.011 g/cm³
Day length : 23 Hr 17 min 58 sec
Year length 626 days
Albedo : 19 percent
Core composition Fe and Ni
High amounts of Tritanium
Distance to the (single) main star : 210.000.000 km
Because of the high degree tilted axle (71°) the seasons are very different, and it's not a walk in the park to live there. Temperatures vary between -82°C in wintertime and 112°C in summertime.

Aries IV had a breathable atmosphere till about 12 million years ago but lost it because of a runaway greenhouse effect. As a result, the atmosphere turned toxic with high ammonia concentrations, but it boosted the tritanium quantities enormously.

Spacesuits are therefore a necessity and strict precautions, and security measures must be followed strictly at all times. A leak in a spacesuit is deadly, even in a very short time.

=/\= MISSION LOG =/\=
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Today we continue our mission at Aries IV Colony, after the series of earth quakes, we began our rescue operation down in the mines.
The power is restored and the elevator to the mines work again, so we can begin our rescue mission to find and help the miners.

Team 1, under the lead of Oola and Team 2 under my lead, and the administrator went down to the mines.
Went we arrived down we came across the Underground Ops center, we found the first Miner named Ezra ,who fled to the living-quarters. He had some head injuries, but he is still alive. at first he mistaken Doctor Jabara Eris for someone named Maureen, after the docs treatment he slowly came by and was able to walk again.

Then we slowly go deeper into the mines at the first tunnel to the left, up the stairs we found the second and third victims. They were crushed by the falling boulders and din’t survive unfortunately, we tagged them for later retrieval.

In the meanwhile team 1 and miner Ezra joined te search and we went together further the tunnel in, where we found the fourth Miner who was trapped with his legs under a large boulder. the victim was in shock and we needed to act fast. We did found a forklift that could lift up the boulder and we managed to get the miner out of there, Doctor Jabara Eris stabilized him the an team retrieved him to get him back to the colonies infirmary.

I scanned the tunnel with my tricorder and saw there where life-forms sealed up in a chamber further in the tunnels. Once we arrived there we needed to get the rock out of the way, one of the options was to blast the rocks out of the way.
Lt. Ellemir Maven set her phaser on the highest setting and began to carefully carve off pieces of the rock blocking the way, and manages to clear the way for us.

Once we were though, we saw a horrific sight, we saw 5 miners dead in horrific stances, three of them where staged in a triangle and covered in blood, on was covered in living spiders and the last one was properly shocked to death.
I even noticed a severed left arm on the ground, near a whole in the wall. wonder what in there, there was not much we could do for those poor souls, we had the sad duty to tag them for later retrieval. we did bring the severed arm with us, to investigate what exactly happened.

On our way back we noticed another whole in the wall, with blood surrounding it. we tied to investigate it, but it sucked the Administrator in and not much later only his helmet rolled out. on a closer look we saw the administrators head was still in it. we dint want to stay a minute longer and practically run out of the mine towards the exit.

In the main while Lt (JG )Ferre Flamand conducted his analyzes on the computer, and got the following results and it dint look so good: simply said, we've been very lucky here already. A tectonic plate has shifted, hence the quakes, but just below that plate is a huge gas bubble that can catch fire at the slightest with the necessary consequences. Therefore, he suggests to stop the activities in the mine immediately to avoid worse. A thorough investigation must first be carried out before further work can be carried out. In the worst case scenario, the mine will even have to be closed and a different site has to be dug.

=^= BEGIN REPORT TRANSMISSION =^=

Mission Report - Medical
Date: 2422.06.12

Reporting officer: Ens. Jabara Eris, MD

~ Procedure: Initial Descent ~
* Following the series of tremors, word came that a number of miners were trapped underneath the surface.
* As the only access from the surface to the mines was via a large lift (elevator) system, power failures caused by the tremor damage temporarily prevented rescue teams from getting to the trapped miners.
* Eventually power was restored to the lift system, at which point UFS crew members proceeded together down to the mines to search for and treat survivors.
* One male crew member was located in the sealed crew bunk (sleeping) area, which contained pressure and a safe atmosphere to allow for breathing.

~ First Male Miner - Treatment ~
* Tricorder scans detected a deformed swollen area on the patient with redness and bruising around an injury on the right wrist, with the cause being a closed fracture.
* Tricorder scans also detected gastronomical distress resulting in nausea.
* Treatment was administered for pain, swelling and potential infection, including: 2.5cc's of Morphenolog as an analgesic, and 2cc's of Scopolamine for nausea
* A dermal regenerator and bone knitter were used in conjunction to repair the patient’s muscle and bone damage, and repair the damaged skin.
* The treated patient was released to return to the surface while we went in search of more critically injured miners outside of the crew buildings.

~ Procedure: Continued Search ~
* The Aries IV infirmary was alerted to have medical teams standing by for injured crew members, which we planned to send up to them as needed for treatment.
* Within the mines, two deceased miners were located, one with his faceplate smashed in on his environmental suit.
* Further on, another miner was found, his legs crushed and pinned beneath a large rock. Analysis determined he had about 10 minutes of air left in his oxygen tanks.

~ Second Male Miner - Treatment ~
* Tricorder scans determined both legs on the patient had been broken with multiple fractures resulting in open wounds and significant blood loss.
* Tricorder scans detected low blood perfusion to patient’s tissues, with inadequate tissue functions, resulting in the circulatory system being slower then normal, indicating shock.
* Tricorder scans indicated that pressure from the large rock on the patient’s legs was preventing the patient from immediately bleeding out.
* A localized coagulant was administered via hypospray to the area near the crushed legs to temporarily prevent excessive loss of blood.
* The patient was then injected via hypospray with 5cc's of Alkysine to deal with the neurological damage connected to the shock
* Treatments were then administered to the patient via hypospray to provide a sedative (5cc's of Kayolane) to keep the miner unconscious, along with an analgesic (2.5cc's of Morphenolog) to deal with his pain.
* After other crew members were able to lift the large rock off the patient's lower extremities, physical damage was immediately treated using a tri-laser connector, setting it for sterilization using a carbon-dioxide laser, then an argon laser for cauterization laser, followed by a quasi-continuous-wave dermal-regeneration laser
* Following treatment and confirmation the patient's health had stabilized, the low gravity allowed me to transport him over to an emergency hover stretcher for transport.
* At this point, the Aries IV medical team was alerted regarding the injuries of the patient, the need for immediate treatment in their surgical facility, and a request to meet the patient with an IV set up with electrolytes
* I then used the hover stretcher to safely move the patient to the mining elevator, where he was met by colony medical personnel and taken to the upper surface for emergency treatment

~ Procedure: Further Exploration ~
* At least three other miners were found further along the mine shaft, but all were deceased, with their bodies apparently being eaten by a previously unknown species of arachnid, similar in size to a Bajoran arachnid known as the ashikhan spider.
* Tricorder analysis and visual inspection revealed that one of the miners was killed by a puncture wound to the chest, within which was found to be a severed human arm. The arm was secured and brought back to the surface for later analysis.

~ Administrator - Cause of Death ~
* A colony administer accompanying Sentinel crew announced he was going back to the surface and left on his own. Soon after separating from the Sentinel crew and going out of sight into nearby mines, the sound of the administrator's screams was heard.
* Upon reaching the location of the scream, Sentinel crew discovered the severed head of the deceased administrator within the helmet of his environmental suit, surrounded by large amounts of blood.
* The helmet containing the severed head was taken both out of respect for the dead and for forensic medical analysis.
* The head was no longer in the helmet by the time I reached the mining elevator. Reports by other members of the Sentinel crew indicated an unknown life form had been able to quickly remove the head from the helmet and pull it back into the mining caves without my knowledge.

~ Conclusion ~
* Upon returning to the base colony via mining lift, the severed arm and empty helmet were carefully placed into a sealed container for isolation and later analysis.
* All tricorder readings taken during the mine exploration were saved, backed up, and made available to colony and Starfleet personnel as needed.
