The Office of UF Starfleet Operations has instituted Specializations. All members will now be eligible to choose specializations based on their Branch, and have them recorded in their Service Jackets and in their in-world titlers. Read on!

Background

In Starfleet, the average Science Officer isn't necessarily called a "Science Officer." They might be called an "Astrophysicist" or an "Exobotanist." Similarly, an Engineer might actually be a "Warp Field Specialist" or any of a number of other things. Canon is replete with these kinds of specializations. In that spirit, we are instituting Specializations into all Branches in UFS.

The idea of the Specialization is to add depth to one's character. All Starfleet personnel are encouraged and welcomed to choose two specializations that will be recorded in one's Service Jacket. Personnel may choose a 'major' and a 'minor' specialization within their Branch. They are then encouraged to roleplay the specializations in ship RPs.

How do you choose or define a specialization?

Talk to your Branch Chief! Branch Chiefs have the authority to authorize specializations. They will work with you to make sure your specialization choice reflects a proper RP background or is reflected in an IC fashion. This can vary by person and department, but will largely focus on tying it into your characters' story. Once specializations have been authorized, they are recorded in the member's Service Jacket, and members in non-supervisory roles are authorized to change their billet in their titler to the specialization.

How is one's specialization recorded and displayed?

Once specializations have been authorized, they are recorded in the member's Service Jacket, and members in non-supervisory roles are authorized to change their billet in their titler to the specialization. For instance, a Science Officer on board USS Maxwell might have the following in their titler:

Lieutenant | Science
Science Officer | USS Maxwell

If that person were to choose "Astrophysicist" as their specialization, they could change their titler to instead say:

Lieutenant | Science
Astrophysicist | USS Maxwell

NOTE: If you are a Chief or Vice-Chief of a Department, you can still choose a specialization, and it will still be recorded in your Service Jacket. However, you will still have your Chief or Vice-Chief title in your titler.

Can you change your specialization?

Yes! If you decide you don't want that specialization anymore, you can either delete it or choose a new one. However, we do ask for some realism: people spend a great deal of time IC developing specializations, and won't jump to another specialization every week. Only your current specializations are recorded in your Service Jacket, and only your current major specialization is recorded in your titler.

Who can choose a specialization?

Members of all Fleet Branches can choose specializations.

Who do you talk to again?

Talk to your Branch Chief! Here they are:

Engineering: Fleet Captain Jorden Allen
Intelligence: Captain Phoenix Finistair
Medical: Lt. Commander Emma King (Njal Edwyn)
Operations: Captain Zimri Zapatero
Science: Commander Drewski Northman
Security: Commander James Williams (AdomSisko Resident)

What if you have other questions about this?

Talk to your Branch Chief listed above, or talk to:

Chief of UF Starfleet Operations: Rear Admiral Nora Gerhadsen
Vice Chief of UF Starfleet Operations: Commodore Aryela (Aryela Dagger)

A follow-up to the original post:

Civilians are eligible to choose specializations as well! Please contact the Branch Chief that is most appropriate for the role you take in UFS. If you are unsure, please speak to either Nora Gerhadsen or Aryela Dagger.
