USS T-Durant Mission, TDRP033: "Cait's in the K'Grell" (170812)

The USS Taylorholic Durant is considered to be the Flagship of the UFS Fleet. We are honoured to have Admiral Mike Calhoun as our former CO and as a current crew member, as well as other luminaries. We support UFSA as much as we can and we provide mentorship to the JOOP & CGSD graduate programs.
We roleplay in-world on a drop-in and scheduled basis. We also add to our history and environment by writing RP Narratives, Mission Logs & Personal Stories for the UFS forum.
Inspired by the ship's namesake, the late Admiral Taylorholic Durant, crew members work to exemplify the behaviour, actions & vision of United Federation Starfleet in everything they do. Our first rule: to be kind to one another. And have fun.
Please note we practice Post Order (P.O.) and One Post in our Roleplays. For further info, contact the C.O.!

===INTERNAL MESSAGE===

USS TAYLORHOLIC DURANT
VESTA CLASS NCC 780304
LOCATION: D'NORIA SECTOR, 12 LY COREWARD PINASTRI
STATUS: YELLOW
STARDATE 170811

CAPTAIN'S LOG:

As we approached the border of the Pinastri and D'Noria Sectors we encountered an ancient asteroid belt that is slowly traversing the galaxy. We detected gravimetric emissions from the belt, and although our systems were affected by this we decided to travel through it. It extends more than a light year in either direction and its closest end point is in Sector 006H, which is restricted.

As we approached the belt we were surprised to receive a signal from a source that appeared to be closer to us than any planetary system in the area. Sensors were intermittent but we were able to determine the message was coming from the largest asteroid, and that it was a request for assistance. Scans, affected by the gravimetric eddies, were inconclusive. We could not tell if it was one life form, or six life forms, or none at all. We sent messages on all channels without reply. However, we finally did detect a domed outpost containing a breathable atmosphere, and also discovered a transporter enhancer had been set up on the surface. The life signs fading in and out were, to my surprise, Ferasen. I decided to send a small away team to investigate.

Upon transport, the away team met the lone survivor, M'Grash. He apparently had been sent to the asteroid for scientific study, along with his teammate, Sh'ia. His equipment had malfunctioned and the belt had moved away from his home planet. He was upset that his own people had not come to rescue them, and informed us his partner had been injured and subsequently passed away, some days or perhaps weeks ago.

Commodore Skinstad and Captain Broek offered the hospitality of the Durant and the assistance of our crew in fixing Mr. M'Grash's equipment, especially his shuttle. The Ferasen accepted and was brought aboard Durant, and given guest quarters.

I have ordered the Durant match the asteroid's course and speed while we assist Mr M'Grash. A second away team is to beam to the outpost, along with our guest, to ascertain if the equipment and shuttle can be repaired. And also to determine what might be done with Sh'ia.

Toocool out.

RP Log 170812
Location: 'The Asteroid Outpost'
==========================

Commodore Cheryl Skinstad: "Greetings Mr M'Grash. I hope you found our hospitality on board the ship welcoming?"

Commodore Zania Turner stood with the away team and looked at the individual. She nodded to him and wondered, "Would it be okay if I were to take some scans?"

Lieutenant Junior Grade Evelyn Rieko: "Mr. M'Grash, I am sorry to hear about the death of you friend. We wil help you arrange a memorial or funeral... if you instruct us on your ways."

M'Grash looks around. After the warmth and comfort of guest quarters on the Durant, the asteroid feels cold. No, more than cold. Freezing. He looks to the women. They sent all these females with him? What, did he need a... harem? He snorted. What a sign of disrespect for Sh'ia. But these, Starfleets, they did things different. He breathed out slowly between his teeth. "Hospitality good," he said to the commanding person. To the other one, he raised an eyebrow, "Did you not come to scan and fix? Of course," he gestured with a gloved hand, "do what you like. Only don't touch Sh'ia," he warned. "In the cave." The young female speaks softly. He blinks. "Maybe. If my own people came," he growls softly. "But they didn't."

Skinstad: Looks to her away team then back to her new guest. "I would like to introduce some more of our crew Mr M'Grash. Commodore Turner in charge of Ops and Lieutenant Reiko, our Science member. We are all here to assist you."

Turner nodded respectfully and pulled out her tricorder before running the first scan. "Thank you," she responded to him. "How long have you been on this asteroid?"

Rieko nods to M'Grash as the XO introduces her to him. She senses a slight contempt or maybe just a dislike... and wonders why, "Excuse me I will take a look at the body of your friend... *She walks away to do her scans and to determine what caused his death* “Where is he?”

M'Grash says to them. "I have been here many turns. "Over there," he points to the shuttle,"is the Krall that does not move. I tried," he points to the tools by one of the engines, "I tried to fix. There," he points to a console, "that is my communications." He moves to it, picking up a tool and dropping it back with a hollow bang. "No power. Not enough power, anyway." He moved across to another set of consoles. "Here we watch the asteroids and read their energy. We think maybe we can harness the emissions to make our K'Grell colony stronger." He shakes his furry head. "Fools. Fools. They have NO loyalty!" When the young one says she will look at Sh'ia... he tries to leap in front of her. "No!"

Skinstad looks hopefully at Zania, who she has known for a long time, and trusts. "Can you scan and fix as our guest wishes?" She hopes that the frankness of the Ferasen does not cause the other crew members any concern. Smiling at Lt Reiko who she knows to be very enthusiastic. "Assist Mr M'Grash with any funeral arrangements, lieutenant."

Turner heard the request and nodded. "Yes, I'll do that right away, Commodore," she responded before walking over to the ship and beginning a series of scans.

Rieko raises eyebrows and looks at M'Grash, "I would not touch him? I would just use my tricorder, passing near his body... to get information. Try......" She stops herself from saying he should try to calm down... that would only make things worse...

M'Grash hisses to Evelyn, "Did I not say, do not touch Sh'ia? And, what is this 'funeral arrangement,'" he says the unfamiliar words to Cheryl, "you want to fix?"

Skinstad realises that there is much tension with the Ferasen regarding his second in Command and so decides to leave the subject of any funeral arrangement well alone for now. Turning to the lieutenant she shrugs slightly and whispers, "I think we have hit a bit of a raw nerve here, so let's leave the crew member be for now.”

Turner continues with her scans to see what she can find about the ship and why it wasn't functional. "Interesting. I'll have to do more with checking on the systems. There's something here . . ."

Rieko walks over to the XO to advise her of the tricorder readings of the body. "Sir, it seems Sh'ia was ill..I am getting more data to find out the type of illness.. but his body was weakening and could not stand the harsh cold of this asteroid or much stress." .

M'Grash rubs a hand over his face in a catlike gesture, running his fingers along his whiskers. Too long. "Too long I was here," he says in answer to the question that lingered in his mind. "Too long without the blue sky and warm sun. Too long without fresh water or real food. Too long," he adds sadly, "too long alone." To Evelyn, "You went in the cave." He shook his head at her, "You did not wait to give the observance. This is a disrespect. I know you are not my kind. Still." He sighs. "When entering a place where one of us lies, we always pause, and remember them, speaking their name, and saying we have come to honor them." Adds: "There was no power anymore. But I have," he moves to the science console, "I have records of all we gathered." He points to a PADD. "There."

Realising that the console repair needs to be the first priority here, calming the situation a little hopefully, Skinstad smiles at the Ferasen and adds "Thank you. I am sure that we are going to be able to fix your console in a short while. Looks to her Science Officer "Lt, run a scan on the console, read the PADD and give me a status report? Thank you for the medical information. Noted for now. " All the while she is becoming more concerned that something is not adding up with her either, and she is also ious that there has to be no upset of the Ferasen and their customs.

Turner climbed up into the shuttle and continued with her scans. "Sir, I think I found something. It almost seems as if there was a rogue program on the ship."

Rieko: “My deepest apologies Mr. M'Grash..I did not realize you said do not enter the cave...I only heard you say do not touch the body....and I did not."

M'Grash looks to Cheryl and Evelyn. His body is rigid and his ears pull back. But his eyes are luminous, belying his aggression. "You didn't know," he concedes. "You didn't know." He picks up a hypospanner. "What words will bring back Sh'ia now?" He points to the jagged end of a rusty console cover. Its edge is dimly red. "That's what killed him."

Skinstad wonders where and how a rogue program could come from. Turns to the Ferasen, points to the jagged end of the console, and the hypospanner and asks him. " Mr M'Grash, could you please explain in more detail what you mean by what killed your crew member?"

Turner continues to dig into the programming of the shuttle to investigate the program. "From what I can tell, this almost acts like a virus. It's not something that was normally programmed into the system. It almost seems deliberate to strand them there, and also make them think the communications with their people were being sent, when it wasn't," she noted grimly. "Someone wanted them dead."

Rieko restrains the urge to pat M'Grash's shoulder to console him, knowing it would be inappropriate. She looks to him and then to the Commodore, she says "Sh'ia contracted a form of Tetanus...and that along with the harsh environment killed him. He died of exposure.” She looks at M'Grash with sympathy.

M'Grash: "We were working. I on the Krall," he points to the shuttle, "and Sh'ia here, at this console. He had some problem to remove this cover. It was frozen, maybe. I don't know exactly, I didn't see. But I heard him call. He got the cover off, but cut his hand. I tried to call for help," he says, his eyes moist, "Again and again. I washed it. He got sicker. I gave him all the medicine we had. He... " at Evelyn's words he turns and moves away, head bowed.

Skinstads half Betazoid empathic powers sense a great deal of upset from all sides. Her crew members are confused with the data collections and the Ferasen is very upset about the death of his Second. She tries to be positive for everyone's benefit. "I think we could beam this console aboard the Durant for much more extensive testing. Would you agree to this Mr MGrash?”

Turner continued to scan the programs on board the shuttle, and began to do a system diagnostic. "This is even more puzzling. There's honestly nothing wrong at all with the shuttle," she revealed. "It's in perfect working condition, but that rogue program . . . the virus . . . disabled systems to make it seem like the shuttle had multiple failures. The program's origin date in the system corresponds to their last supply stop before they ended up on the asteroid."

Rieko looks to the XO, thinking this is not just a simple rescue. This is a mystery..there is much more here than w though..and she wonders if M'Grash knows what this is all about and what is really going on...

M'Grash looks to Cheryl. "Yes take what you like. It doesn't matter now. Only leave Sh'ia, alone in the cave. He will stay here." He thinks over Zania's words. "Do you say, someone broke these things on purpose?" He growls low. "C'Tresirr M'isil! He was jealous. I was to be.. C'mow at the next Gathering. He wanted always to have this place. He tried before to slander my name but others did not listen. Now the Gathering has come, and I am not there. And Sh'ia, Sh'ia is no longer my Second." He wiped his face again. "His family will have broken hearts." Then he looked to Cheryl, "Sh'ia was the son of our ruling family. My friend, almost a brother. If I go back and tell them, there could be a war. Sh'ia's family against M'isil." He hisses, "I will kill M'isil myself."

The response from the Ferasen is just what Skinstad was worried might happen. The plot thickens as more information unfolds itself. Looks to M'Grash as she taps her Combadge. =^= Transporter Room, lock onto the following co-ordiinates. It’s a console. Beam it into a spare cargo hold for us to do some tests. " In a moment, the console disappears.

Turner continued to dig into the shuttle systems, tapping on the controls as well as her tricorder. A few moments passed and she sees the lights on the shuttle restored as the systems come alive once more. She also hears radio traffic as well. "I managed to quarantine the program and bring the entire shuttle back online. I'd suggest, once they take it back to their people, the ship gets wiped and re-programmed from scratch to make sure there's no other lingering effects from the program."

Rieko looks at M'Grash, if what he says is true, then he is a pawn in a game of intrigue and dishonest clans fighting for power and control. She looks at M'Grash, " Who is M'isil, and what is the Gathering?"

M'Grash: To Zania, "I am grateful. And now this shuttle is evidence to show what happened here. I can take it home to the Sh'ia." To Evelyn: "M'isil is one of my colony. He has no loyalty, only he wants power. He will do anything and say anything to get what he wants. I knew it a long time, so did Sh'ia, but we had no proof more than our words and feelings." He pauses for a moment. "The Gathering comes every year at the time of harvest. Then a new leader may be chosen." He looks thoughtful: "Can you make a.. marker? A signal on a special frequency? Secret? Broadcast from here?" he gestures to the cave entrance. "Then Sh'ia's family can find him again. To do the rites."

Skinstad smiles at Turner. "Well done, good work and yes I agree with you. Let's work on getting this done." She looks kindly at the Ferasen, and feels his pain and loss. "Of course we can. I will make this a priority once we are back on board to get this done for your special friend and his family. I also suggest that you let us escort you to your homeworld."

Turner runs another systems check to make sure that everything is in line and operating as it should be before breathing out a sigh of relief. "Putting the program into quarantine has worked and it is holding, although I cannot guarantee for how long. Hopefully it'll be long enough to allow our new friend to return to his homeworld safely."

Rieko hopes M'Grash will accept the Durant as an escort to his home. If so there will be a chance to learn more of the Ferasens, as there is not much documented about them at present. She could do a thesis on them! She is intrigued to find out more about M'Grash and the power struggle of the clans!! She says, "I hope you will accept the Durant as your escort home, Sir. It will be safer for you."

M'Grash almost smiles at Evelyn. She has a sweet spirit. He had been too long alone. "You bring the sun to a place that has only known cold." He looks for a moment at the mouth of the cave. Then he turns to Cheryl and says, "When all is ready, I can fly the shuttle to K'Grell with you as escort. You can bear witness to what happened here."

Skinstad looks to her away team and smiles, 'I think we are finished down here for now. We need to beam back up to the ship and get to work on our marker project." Taps combadge: =^= "Transporter Chief, Beam us all up out of here for now. =^=

Turner moves to the beam out point She looks at the other members near the cave. "Sir, when he does fly back, I'd like to accompany him on the shuttle just in case something happens. I could make the necessary changes on the fly."

*The four figures shimmer, and vanish..*
