=^= STARFLEET COMMAND ORDER BEGINS =^=

USS JANEWAY
OBERTH CLASS
SVALR STIARNA, COMMAND
STARDATE: 190109.113

DEPLOYMENT ORDER ST839TH

OBJECTIVE: Rodan System

BACKGROUND: Science has known since the 21st century that there are a great number of rogue planets roaming the universe. Cast out of their star systems during the time of formation, while their sibling planets established orbits around the system's star, the orphan planets were unable to establish elliptical revolutions and drifted away, doomed to wander.

SITUATION: One such rogue planet has entered a fragile binary system located in Sector 002F. Scientists on Rodan Prime are deeply concerned that the massive castaway will upset the gravimetric forces in their region and affect the survival of the 55,000 colonists who have been established there for three generations.

TASK: Deploy to Sector 002F as soon as possible and assist the scientists to determine the probabilities and protect the colonists. The hospital ship USS Luranza has been assigned and will rendezvous with the Janeway in 48 hours.

Number of days: indeterminate

Security Clearance: Level 2, Need to know.

Personnel: Standard crew compliment: 182

Starfleet Command: has issued the orders 190108

RP NARRATIVE
=============

Svalr Stiarna entered the bridge, having been in her ready room for some time, dealing with this and that. She'd read over their orders for this mission again. It seemed simple enough. Head to the Rodan System and provide reassurance to the colony on Rodan Prime, and use the Janeway's excellent sensors to plot the probable path of the incoming rogue planet, have science determine the possible effects of its passing, and keep fingers crossed that the hospital ship also assigned would not be needed. She nodded, the tiny bells on her earlobes tinkling, "Mr Wood, status report? Mr Nina, is astrometrics ready?"

Bracken Wood smiles at the Captain in response. She quickly taps her console, checking readings from navigational sensors, and also checks present course. "Captain, we are 2 light years away travelling Quantum slip stream, therefore our eta to the Rodan System is about 20 minutes."

Prudence Hopkins taps her console a few more times, satisfied with the results "Captain, we should be arriving on schedule. Sensors report no interference, and I am researching probabilities based on mass of the planet, trajectory, and using a three percent variability rate."

Nina looks around and nervously half smiles at anyone making eye contact, returning greetings when offered. Trying hard to contain her excitement about being aboard a Starfleet Oberth class vessel, a ship class dedicated to the pursuance of science and exploration, what could be more exciting than traveling through the wonders of the cosmos and seeing things only seen in archive materials or through telescopes before but actually able to see and analyse them up close. The chance to do this so early in her academy path was just too good to pass up and she was feeling very thrilled with it all when she's startled by the Captains order to get Astrometrics ready "Yes Sir will do, thank you Sir" Looks around for an unoccupied station hurriedly.

Stiarna thought it was very odd that sometimes when she looked at the viewscreen and observed spatial bodies moving through space, she 'heard' sound effects. She'd seen some images of the rogue planet in question and for some reason the 'sound' that seemed to accompany the visual whenever she saw it, wasn't just wind. It was a kind of low and threatening hum. She looked to Prudence: "Let's extrapolate the possible possibility that we might need to change the trajectory of the massive planet so that it skips pass this inhabited system. First, do we have the power to do this? Second, if we change its course will we send it catapulting into some other unsuspecting system?" She pursed her lips in a tiny 'muu' contemplating the idea that one small change to the planet's course now could impact some other system countless light years away at some point in the far future, all because of what they did now. "Mr Wood, when we are 500,000 kilometers from Rodan Prime drop us from slip stream, and proceed at warp two."

Wood nods at her command from the Captain. "Aye Sir, I will drop us from slip stream, and proceed at warp two when we are 500,000 kilometers from Rodan Prime."

Prudence : "Interesting. I believe we *may* have the power to accomplish this task, using a combination of our tractor beam, and the mass and pull of the star itself. if we can change the path, but just a little, we can use the 'slingshot effect' to a slight degree. Working on sending it to an empty part of the galaxy now. I wonder if this rogue planet may have life forms on it. It's definitely a possibility Sir."

Nina: Finding a vacant science station to be seated, avoiding the big desk, and immediately accesses the Starfleet database for all information on rogue planets. Links into the sensor arrays and sets up analytic programs to check the target, when acquired, against known conditions and formulate an up-to-date assessment of the object and its course. Looks around the bridge at the diversity of people and smiles, thinking "Yes, this is definitely the place to be and experience the most one can in a short space of time." Feeling the need to respond to the Captain's order, blurts out "Sir, astrometrics online and ready to deep scan analyse as soon as we get within range of the target, Sir." Turns to Ensign Hopkins. "Sir, can you tell me when we're likely to be within range?"

Stiarna: "That is an interesting possibility, but it would certainly be life as we do not know it, for I don't think the planet has any kind of atmosphere? It must be tremendously cold on the surface as well as it doesn't orbit a sun for warmth. Perhaps there is life inside it..." she looked a bit worried, "Is there any way for us to determine that at this distance?" She smiles to Nina, "We are some eight light years from the planet so it should be on long range scans now... however, since there's a nebula between us, telemetry has been affected. I believe, Mr Wood, that we will soon be clear of the anomaly and able to see clearly?" She waits for the ship to drop from QSD to warp.

Wood perks up when she hears the possibility of life forms spoken about by colleagues. She begins to ready the ship to drop from slip stream and continue at warp speed instead. She wonders what scans are reading on other people's consoles. Hers shows they are nearing the edge of a nebula. "Sir, we will soon be clear of the anomaly. Minutes from now. "

Prudence : "Captain, I believe we can, using the full power of the ship, adjust the course of the planet and send it towards a emptier part of the nebulae. All other non-essential systems will be down while the Tractor beam is being utilized." Looking over at the fresh Cadet smiling. "We should be within range very shortly after coming out of slipstream. Please double check and make sure my calculations are at least feasible, Cadet?" She continues to look for other options and methods of swinging the planet clear.

Nina: Feeling a little deflated at not knowing the range of the sensors but comforted by the Captain's understanding tone she responds, "Yes Sir, thank you, Sir." Reflects from her research in an attempt to show she does know something at least "Sir it may have an atmosphere, objects are able to retain an atmosphere even when not near a star if its mass and gravity is strong enough to hold in the gasses required. It's also possible for heat to be retained and generated if the internal geology is active. Not that we know that is the case here… I mean it might be ….but at the same time it might not be … sort of unknown at this stage, Sir." Loses her confidence rapidly. "But yes Sir, will engage scanners as soon as we're all clear and Ensign Hopkins gives the order."

Stiarna nods to Prudence, "See if you can hail Rodan Prime and let them know we are on approach and beginning our investigations." She went through procedures in her mind and ticked each one. To Nina: "This is where science comes into play. You'll need to track the planet's current trajectory and determine how closely it will travel to the Rodan System, and calculate the probable effects of its passing on the system." Estimating the mass of the planet, the gravitational pull, and any possibility that it could impact any spatial objects in the area was important. "Mr Wood, ready to drop from QSD?" The Rodan's had ships of their own, of course, but... well, there was nothing like a Federation starship, was there.

Wood turns to inform the Captain as they clear the anomaly. "Sir, I will drop us from slip stream, and proceed at warp two as we are now clear of the nebula and we are 500,000 kilometers from Rodan Prime as per your orders."

Prudence : "Hailing Rodan Prime now, Sir." Looking over to the Cadet. "We should be within scanning range as soon as we drop to Warp." Listening for the reply, and receiving it, informing the Captain. "Rodan Prime is replying Sir. "

Nina: Receiving the all clear from Ensign Hopkins and feeling more confident, Nina nods a thank you to the Captain. "Engaging deep scan sensors now Sir." Excitedly taps in the co-ordinates into the console and locks on the analytic sensor scans already programmed in. Checking again the long list of tests and the output location for the results. Verifying the target is locked, calls out to the Captain. "Captain, scientific analysis deep scans set up and running now Sir." Turns to Ensign Hopkins too and speaking less loudly. "Thanks, they're going now" with a warm smile.

Stiarna: "Excellent Mr Wood. We're not going to be stopping at Rodan Prime. Now we're clear of the nebula, change course towards the incoming rogue planet and maintain warp two, it's quite far away, which will give us time to determine whether any action is needed for us to assist the safety of the Rodans. Ensure the deflector dish is online and functioning as I expect there will be debris. Mr Prudence, reassure the Rodans that we have the situation in hand, and also inform them the USS Luranza is on route to assist with any medical issues that might arise." The last thing they needed was hysteria from the planet. The Janeway was here in plenty of time to do whatever was needed to adjust the trajectory of the incoming rogue planet. "Mr Nina, Mr Prudence, consider the options of torpedoes, tractor beam, or other possibilities, should we need to adjust the course of the object."

Wood nods as she hears her orders. She executes course changes from the helm and acknowledges with "Aye Sir." She begins tapping her console to ensure the deflector dish is online and functioning. Then she cross checks sensors, checks also communications, and monitors ship-wide status.

Prudence : "Rodan Prime acknowledged, and gives thanks for our assistance. Calculations seem to be in order, using current data. Sir, the use of torpedoes *could* assist a slight margin, if it needs a slight nudge to get it a bit more of a safety factor. Cadet, do your scans show any preliminary information we can use? And do you have any other ideas that might work?"

Nina: Watching the scans report, Nina wondered whether it was necessary to let everyone know as opposed to requesting specific permission to scan something or whether that was routine and expected aboard a ship like this. Whilst a lot of the scans weren't invasive and relied on receiving data and therefore could not do any harm there were some that sent various types of radiation or other waves to probe and reflect the object's surface or deeper inside. There was always the chance something would react with those, but mulling it over in her mind, determined it was the right thing to do. At least everyone knew it was happening just in case a reaction was detected. Turned her attention to the scans and making sure data was being received and processed, busying herself with that for the moment. Responds to Ensign Hopkins question. "Sir, I should have the results of the intensive scans imminently and from this distance we're going to get a really clear picture!"

Stiarna to Russ: "Mr Sprout, put the rogue planet on screen, magnification 1,000." He complied and she turned to look at the thing. She supposed it was, in a way, more of a comet than a planet. She wondered what criteria science used to tell the difference. She was sure this thing had a kind of tail. Any body with gravity would. She wondered how old it was, how far it had travelled, and what it had seen. She often felt very young observing the wonders of the universe, and very old observing the humanoids that she'd met. "Mr Prudence, let's go to yellow alert and get our shields up. Mr Wood, make sure your course skirts the edge of the Rodan System, otherwise we will need to drop to impulse." Starfleet regs would not permit warp in a planetary system. She leaned on the conn, saying "I've always wondered if Acoustic Levitation would work in space. I understand that the sound waves that are emitted in space are so low and infrequent that humanoids can't hear them. Given that info, I guess we should stick to conventional means!"

Wood cross checks the information being constantly relayed to the conn position as a matter of routine. She slightly adjusts her course. "Sir, I concur that the deflector dish is online and functioning. I have slightly compensated our course to ensure it skirts the edge of the Rodan System."

Prudence : "Aye, Sir. Yellow alert, and shields are up. Shall we start to prepare the tractor beam, or will we try something else first?"

Nina: Collating the summary results prepares the report for the captain and the rest of the crew that may be interested in it for varying reasons. "Sir, reporting on the scans of the rogue planet. As expected, it's made up primarily of the usual components of ice, methane, hydrogen, sulfur, silicon, magnesium, iron etc etc" pauses a moment and takes a breath before continuing "with a mass of 11-12 Jupiters, still under the mass to fuse deuterium so in the 'planet' category Sir, but incredibly dense." Looks over to Ensign Hopkins and whispers "We're gonna need a LOT more power to budge that thing!" continuing her report to the captain "It is a single body, no signs of any disc or matter accretion, therefore most likely not a sub-brown dwarf or other potential stellar body. More interestingly however, it's showing a gravitational pull, much greater than we were expecting. There are also signs deep within the body of the object of large deposits of Latinum" Takes a moment to look around for any Ferengi there may be present. "Very large deposits in fact! Its trajectory won't cause direct collisions with any other masses but the effects of the gravimetric disturbance are certainly going to be felt. Also it appears there IS an atmosphere though thinned out now, and surface temperatures equivalent to Earth's poles at -70 to -50c. Permission to send these results to the scientific team on Rodan Prime so they can work with them to help assess impact Sir?" Contemplates the concept of 'sound' in space and wrinkles her nose.

Stiarna: "Mr Wood, distance to rogue planet?" That question reminded her of equations she'd been given in school. 'If a bird was travelling north and a shuttle was travelling south...' she rolled her eyes a little, happy there were computers to figure out those things now. She stood stunned for a moment at Nina's report. To Prudence she replied, "We will need to determine the probable effects of its proximity, given the mass of the thing, it sounds like a tractor beam won't work." She nodded to Nina, "Pass your information to Mr Wood for transmission." She needed a moment to think over the rest of the report.

Wood cannot help but stare for a moment at the viewscreen and wonder at it. She finds it difficult to imagine the mass described and raises an eyebrow at the word Latinum. She awaits the information she has to transmit. Quickly accessing navigation sensors for verification she reports "Captain we are 7.28 light years."

Prudence furrows her brow, thinking out loud "If we can move it ANY degree away from Rodan Prime, the damaging effects it will have to it will be lessened. How in the heck can we DO that? Torpedoes? Our tractor beam in unison with our impulse engines?" Muttering under her breath, trying to think of a way to achieve the impossible. "Latinum? Dense, and valuable to the Ferengi... Perhaps they could mine it all? Greedy little buggers could help out if they knew the worth of it!"

Nina: Passes the data onto Ensign Wood's station for transmission as ordered adding a note to be included =^= This is the Science Department aboard USS Janeway. We are sending you the results of our deep scans of the rogue object. Please analyse with particular attention to the mass of the object and the likely impact of the gravimetric disturbance thia will cause to your planet. The team here are looking at options too, but would value your input. Please respond. Thank you =^= Turns to Ensign Wood "Sir, information sent to your station." Updating the Captain "Aye Sir, continuing with our own projection of the likely impact on nearby objects when the object passes Sir." Tries to hide a giggle at Ensign Hopkins remark about the Ferengi.

Stiarna was still musing over the latinum readings. "Mr Nina, is this naturally occurring latinum?" It seemed unlikely it could be placed there by someone, although perhaps having a 'bank' in a rogue planet was a.. clever idea. She shook her head at Prudence, tiny bells tinkling: "If it is indeed twelve times the mass of the planet Jupiter in the Terran System, our tractor beam would be relatively useless, I should think. Some well placed torpedoes might assist, Science, can you determine the probability of properly targeted torpedo yields on the trajectory of the planet?"

Wood transmits the information that was sent to her console. She continues checking readings from navigational and tactical sensors, selecting information constantly relayed to the conn position during the mission. She hopes that there will be no surprises.

Prudence : "Sir! An idea.. Perhaps we could use a few of our torpedoes, and set them up as thermal fusion bombs, detonate them one at a time on the surface, and perhaps turn the ice to steam and igniting the methane as sort of a thruster of it's own, turning the planet into a kind of rocket? That may be enough to move it, with help from our tractor beam."

Nina: "Aye Captain, the Latinum is naturally formed deep within the body in a massive layer about 2 miles down. On the torpedoes, we'll need to enhance them somehow, as they are they're not going to make much difference if any. Ensign Hopkin's idea about thermal fusion bombs may work. I need to check, but maybe if we can find something in the object to react with, maybe the Latinum, sacrilege as that would be in some quarters, I'll work with Ensign Hopkins to try and come up with something" Looks around a little pale as she computes the projections and steels herself to make the report having checked and triple checked the results. "Sir. I'm afraid this does not look great for Rodan Prime. At the current projected minimum distance from Rodan prime, the gravimetric disturbance will severely affect the atmosphere, depleting it of some essential gasses tearing them into space and causing wind anomalies all over the surface, severe hurricanes and tornadoes, and the pull on the planet's oceans will cause global super tsunamis with waves exceeding 20 meters. In addition, the severe effects on the geology are going to cause volcanic activity all over." Pauses as the silence falls. Stuttering to continue "Sir it's an extinction event." Slowly turning to Ensign Hopkins "We just have to find a way to move it, somehow some way, if we don't ….. it's an 'If' we can't afford."
