Mission #234: Task Force Phoenix: Poachers of Virunga

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Thursdays 6pm to 8pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Nora Gerhadsen
Executive Officer: April Coswell

Mission Name: Task Force Phoenix: Poachers of Virunga

Story Concept: Nora Gerhadsen/Rich Lombardia/Sierah Schism/Kristoff Jameson

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: Asteroid belt, Ullipallili System

Alert Status: green

The Pinastri Home Fleet has completed a great many repairs. Most of our ships are functional once more. Scout ships report a major concentration of Romulan warships in Pinastri System -- at least 50. We simply do not have the strength to assault such a force, even after having been joined by the Expeditionary Fleet. We do not have any more reinforcements on the way, apart from USS Veracruz which diverted to deal with a potential Romulan vessel. We are too far from Earth to coordinate with an attack through the Khitomer worm hole with Starfleet Alpha Quadrant Fleets, and they will doubtless be refraining from mounting one without knowing our status (which they do not).

We are down, but not out. Communications have been received from Starfleet personnel still planetside on Pinastri: Commodore Mistwallow and Commander Jameson have apparently been removed from Pinastri, which suggests that the Romulans might have a base somewhere. Our scout ships, USS Sojourner and USS Leonov, along with their escorts USS Varangian and USS Mameluke, are scouting beyond Pinastri in hopes of finding this world. But they must be cautious to avoid detection: we have no cloaking device, which means there is a limit to how much intel they can gather. We need a different solution.

OOC Notes:

- This is the fifth USS Maxwell mission in Task Force Phoenix! We will be welcoming crewmembers from USS Veracruz tonight.

- The mission titles for this Task Force are based on themes, places, people and concepts from the life and work of Dian Fossey: https://gorillafund.org/who-we-are/dian ... ossey-bio/ Her book, "Gorillas in the Mist," inspired a movie of the same name, and was the inspiration for the title of Maxwell's first Phoenix episode, "Romulans in the Mist."

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Command Log:

Stardate: 191104

Location: Asteroid Belt, Ullipallili System, aboard USS Temeraire

Alert Status: green

The Pinastri Home Fleet has completed almost all repairs, and is awaiting rendezvous with the final elements of the Expeditionary Fleet. Only three ships (Cataphract, Ticonderoga and Indomitable) remain in spacedock at Ullipallili III Station; all others that were there have completed repairs and are currently undergoing acceptance testing, though some of those ships still have minor repairs to complete.

USS Veracruz arrived in-system escorting a captured Romulan D'Deridex-class warbird, the Silepkek. Scouting squadrons, led by USS Sojourner and USS Leonov, reported in excess of 50 Romulan warships in the Pinastri system, but also reported other Romulan movements. Based on data found in Silepkek's computers, and the movements of a T'Varo-class bird of prey observed by USS Sojourner and USS Leonov, it was determined that the likely base of operations for Romulans in the Delta Quadrant might be found in the M501-1707 System.

USS Maxwell was ordered to investigate the M501-1707 System with the Silepkek acting as escort. The choice of Silepkek was based on the need for stealth: the two ships would appear as so much Romulan traffic to long-range sensors (owing to the Maxwell's Romulan power and warp systems). If a Romulan vessel were to contact the two, then the Silepkek would be able to maintain the subterfuge even from close quarters. To this end, Vulcan crew from all over the Home Fleet were temporarily transferred to the Silepkek. There, they donned replicated Romulan uniforms which had EM systems installed to subtly change Vulcan life signs to appear as Romulan. Unfortunately, there were not enough Vulcan crew members to run the ship (some critical positions, such as Helm officer, were left unfilled), and so other species were sent. The non-Romulan crew add to the Silepkek's 'cover story' of having prisoners to transfer to the Romulan base. Commodore Gerhadsen was obliged to transfer her flag to USS Temeraire, Captain Amelie de la Croix commanding, in order to allow Maxwell to carry out her mission.

Maxwell and Silepkek proceeded to the M501-1707 system, where they indeed encountered a large Romulan presence. There are in excess of five million Romulans living on the second planet in the system. Sensor sweeps indicated no more than 15 Romulan vessels, though one is a Scimitar-class battleship, IRW D'paran. Computer banks on board the Silepkek, in addition to monitored Romulan traffic, identify this planet as "New Romulus." Note that this name is also used by the Romulan Republic in the Beta Quadrant to identify their new capital.

Outlook

The current strength of the Pinastri Home Fleet is 20 active warships, of which three are still not yet battle-worthy. The Silepkek could be considered a twenty-first warship. Six of the Home Fleet vessels are currently on patrol or scouting missions. The rest are repaired or nearly so. The news from the M501-1707 system is intriguing, and may point toward future plans. The situation is suddenly not quite as dire as it has been, though the situation at Pinastri would appear at first blush to be beyond redemption. Even with all ships in perfect condition, the Starfleet forces assembled in the Ullipallili System, along with those on patrol and scouting missions, are no match for the Romulan Fleet currently at Pinastri. But we might be able to find other ways to harass the Romulans.
