Mission #190: The Blind Leading...

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Thursdays 6pm to 8pm SLT

Mission Name: The Blind Leading...

Story Concept: Jayce Rebel and April Coswell

The following information is IN CHARACTER information.

Location: En route to the Ventura system

Alert Status: green

The USS Maxwell is en route to the Ventura III colony to render assistance in a medical emergency. The nature of this emergency hasn't been specified to us at this time, but we have insisted on a check-in point with the Venturan authorities an hour from now, shortly the Maxwell enters the Ventura system.

As we have gone through the Hallow's Eve nebula instead of going around it as most ships do, we will be approaching the system from a different area which is, we have noticed, largely devoid of traffic.

Captain April Coswell, Executive Officer, USS Maxwell

OOC Notes:

- We're not reaching Ventura III yet. We'll have a lil something else happening before then.

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Narrative

While enroute to the Ventura System after traversing a dangerous Mutara-class nebula, USS Maxwell encountered a 500-year-old probe of unknown manufacture. When ship systems were used to perturb the probe in an effort to shake dust free of it for analysis, the probe activated and sent a pulse through the ship. This pulse affected shipboard systems, but also rendered the entire crew temporarily blind. The crew's blindness was caused by light emitted from the probe that had a characteristic modulation frequency. Ship's lighting was used to emit light with the same modulation frequency, but with the modulation phase set to half a cycle in order to negate the effects of the probe's emissions. This had the effect of restoring sight for the crew, and the ship has resumed course to Ventura III.

The probe's intense signal also damaged the First Officer April Coswell's artificial amygdala. This section of Captain Coswell's brain was installed to replace the amygdala that was removed by the Nabraithians some years ago. With the failure of the replacement, Captain Coswell lost the ability to regulate her emotions, and was deemed temporarily medically unfit for command. As a consequence, she was relieved of duty and the Second Officer, Commander Jayce Rebel, assumed command as Acting Captain as neither the nominal Commanding Officer, Commodore Nora Gerhadsen, nor Captain Coswell were able to fulfill the responsibilities. Commodore Gerhadsen was found in her quarters later, unconscious. However, the Commodore's medical condition was unrelated: she did not respond to cortical stimulation, nor did her unconsciousness end with the application of standard stimulants. It has been since determined that she suffered from a rare sleeping syndrome caused by an infection; it is not yet known where the infection originated.

In the meantime, the crew's sight has been permanently restored, and Captain Coswell's artificial amygdala has been repaired. There seems to have been no lasting damage from the ship's interaction with the probe. A revisit might be required to understand the nature of the probe, but this must wait until after the medical emergency on Ventura III has been addressed.
