Mission #156: The Karutak Hunters

USS Maxwell, NCC-21873, is a Nova-class science and survey vessel based out of Pinastri Colony on the Second Life Grid. We are currently a mission of exploration in the Hapke Cluster, an open star cluster of some 10,000 star systems. We are open to new crew! Please inquire with Captain Nora Gerhadsen or with Commander April Coswell. We are particularly interested in Science, Engineering and Operations officers.

Roleplay Times: Thursdays 6pm to 8pm SLT
Commanding Officer: Captain Nora Gerhadsen
Executive Officer: Commander April Coswell

USS Maxwell
NCC-21873
=============================================

Location: deep space, the Hapke Cluster, enroute to Hapke 5798 (still enroute after all this time!)

USS Maxwell is now about half a day out of Hapke 5798. We seem to have shaken off our Karutak pursuers, and so have decided to resume our course and exploration plan. Hapke 5798, with its three different M-class planets, offers a rich system for exploration. We are looking forward to seeing what's down there.

OOC Notes:

This notecard was done after the fact.

* These duties are very general ideas, feel free to add to them and fill things in.

--> We are a science and survey ship. That means we find weird stuff sometimes. Create! Let's see what we all can come up with!

* Please allow people to do their jobs and be thoughtful of the fact that people join departments and divisions to do their jobs. Try not to step on their functions. If you have something to help someone (advise that they may or may not follow) instead of saying something publically, it might be more useful to IM them and discuss it with them.

* Departments should be working together. There should be enough possibilities for everyone as long as they all work together and cooperatively. Do not be afraid to do OOC planning in IM.

* This is more or less freeform, but please don't have it as "Q did this". We need to get ourselves out of our own jams (not that this has ever been a problem with this crew).

Remember that the point of all this is to have fun! Good luck and have at!

Captain's Log:

Stardate: 180315

Location: Deep Space, the Hapke Cluster, enroute to Hapke 5798

Alert Status: Green

Approximately twelve hours out from Hapke 5798, and proceeding toward the system at warp 8, USS Maxwell encountered sudden and extreme subspace turbulence. This turbulence forced the Maxwell out of warp, and seems to have been induced by KNS Lrtaal, which was lying in wait. A battle ensued where the Maxwell sustained substantial damage as well as casualties. One member of the crew, Ensign Maria Quintero, was captured by the Lrtaal, then murdered during communications on the viewscreen.

Initial encounter with the subspace turbulence and the Lrtaal

USS Maxwell had no prior indication of turbulence before directly encountering it. There was no indication on sensors of upcoming subspace turbulence, or even of an distortion or subspace artifact or feature. This lends creedence to the notion that the Karutak have a subspace weapon that can induce this sort of turbulence. The effect of the turbulence was a loss of lateral control on the Maxwell, and a power overflow in our manifold, which resulted in our being obliged to do an emergency warp crash. With an overloaded power distribution manifold and offline warp nacelles, we were then attacked with disruptor fire by KNS Lrtaal.

Alpha (captain) Krrg of the Lrtaal took the opportunity to taunt us over subspace comms as he attacked, of course. He attempted to press his early advantage, weakening our ventral shields and causing damage to our ventral EPS system. It was in this early barrage that the Maxwell sustained a hull breach on Deck 6. Although emergency force fields were quickly erected, one crew member, Ensign Maria Quintero, was lost to space. Before we could beam her back on board, KNS Lrtaal beamed her to that ship.

USS Maxwell rolled to present our dorsal shield to the Lrtaal while transferring shield power there as well. Although this left our other shields substantially weakened, we decided to rely on our maneuvering capability, since the Lrtaal did not seem to use non-line-of-sight weapons.

Murder of Ensign Quintero

The Maxwell maneuvered to the Lrtaal's ventral side, which was relatively exposed. Just as we fired a full volley, however, the Lrtaal rolled on its long axis to present its own dorsal shields, frustrating our attack and taking relatively light damage. The Lrtaal then backed away from the Maxwell, leading to a pause in the fighting.

At this time we received a hail from the Lrtaal, and put it on screen. Krrg was in the viewscreen, along with Ensign Quintero, who had been plucked from the vacuum of space. After some taunts, Krrg murdered Ensign Quintero by severing her jugular artery with his own canine teeth, as well as causing other trauma to the Ensign's jugular area. She quickly died of blood loss while on-screen.

This highly provocative act was clearly meant to either intimidate or anger the crew of the Maxwell. Where it colossally failed in the former, it definitely succeeded in the latter. However, it also seems possible that the highly provocative act may have been a gambit to buy some time for the Lrtaal to make repairs. However, it also created some time for Maxwell to make repairs.

Tyken's Rift and Closing Actions

It was around this time that Operations suggested using high densities of exotic particles to generate a Tyken's Rift near the Lrtaal. If successful, this would momentarily render the ship powerless, and should drop their shields. The Lrtaal apparently completed whatever it was trying to do regarding repairs, and once again went on the attack. We responded, and the fight resumed.

Science and Operations worked together to sort out the particulars of the inducement of a Tyken's Rift. When they were ready, Operations called for a larger separation between ships. We withdrew, but of course the Lrtaal pursued. At a minimum safe distance, the exotic particles were emitted, and the Rift induced. A standard photon torpedo was loaded into the aft tube. With their shields down, a single standard torpedo was deemed sufficient to cause catastrophic damage.

Upon activation of the Tyken's Rift, the Lrtaal immediately lost all power. We fired the photon torpedo, and the resulting impact destroyed the Lrtaal's warp core and other systems. Pylons separated as well, rendering the ship utterly helpless. We then hailed the Lrtaal, and spoke to their new Alpha, Kaaal, who had apparently killed Krrg moments before.

We agreed to not destroy the hulk of the Lrtaal if they transferred their memory banks to the Maxwell. They did so, though they apparently included various computer viruses and other attack mechanisms. Maxwell crew are going through their archives now to learn about Karutak culture, as well as the source of the subspace turbulence that affected us.

Having no further business, we resumed course to Hapke 5798. However, the ship is substantially damaged, and we will have to effect repairs. We left the Lrtaal in a desperate state, but it is to be surmised that they will be recovered soon enough by other Karutak ships.

Analysis

The Karutak have shown that they are a dangerous enemy, and have done real damage to the Maxwell and her crew. Their library data, however, may provide some insight into their culture, and instruct us on how best to proceed with them. The fact that we encountered only the Lrtaal this time could suggest that there was little support for continued exertions by the Karutak against the Maxwell -- in other words, this may have been only a single captain's vendetta. Either that, or the other members of the Karutak Fleet could have been lying in wait elsewhere. This seems unlikely, as they should have come to the Lrtaal's aid, but failed to do so.
